How Gravity Falls NAILED Pixel Art

- We barely ever see pixel art in the world of animated TV shows, but Gravity falls is one of the rare exceptions to this rule, and it pulls it off amazingly. Let's see why!

I love gravity falls. The pixel art really stands out! Who knew actually doing even squares could make tv show pixel art look good
The fact that Gravity Falls predicted Five Nights at Freddy's AND Doki Doki Literature Club in the SAME EPISODE years before either came out still mind-boggles me
Didn't FNaF come out around the same time as GF, though?
@@dogdog357yeas, however the episode was being made before FNaF was released
Lol 😭
I’d say they predicted Needy Streamer Overdose and not DDLC
@@SinRuin why not both?
If I had a nickel for everytime I saw an unstable self aware AI dating sim character with the motif of deleting other characters and often depicted wearing a school uniform
I would have two nickels
Which isn't much but is strange that it happened twice

@@ToastBoastOfficial DDD? (Yu-Gi-Oh reference)
I think I'd have about three. still not alot, but its wierd its happened thrice.
I love gravity falls pixel art. They didnt go the "lets just draw the pixelized character and then move the limbs with a rig" route, which tends to make it look cheap and ugly. They put a lot of effort into actually animating each frame in a pixelated art style
The problem with many people is using 8bit where it doesn't work there is a reason why 16/32 bit and it makes it look very stiff as the 8 bit doesn't let them move the characters as much as they want
Hey give my pfp back lol

one small thing on Giffany. Her design took alot of inspiration from the "Yandere" trope. the anime girl character who will do anything to get the man they want. Which could be where the pink hair comes from as during the time this show was being made, "Yuno Gasai" was and probably still is the most popular character of this archetype.
it could also be a case of convergent evolution, I mean, "generic anime girl that pretends to be cute but is actually dangerous"
anime characters have wacky colors of hair, pink is a cute color that is unassuming and can lead to a false sense of security
a "school uniform" is a really 'cute' and innocent type of outfit to be wearing, perfect for this bait and switch
the concept of "yandere" existed in multiple places before yuno gasai, for example... you know... real life? The term came around as a way to describe these characters that were inspired by real life, not the other way around
if you look up "was giffany inspired by yuno" into google, everything that shows up is fan theories rather than any actual interviews or the such, maybe her design didn't take a lot of inspiration from the yandere trope, it's just that what the show creators wanted to do just happen to fall into the category of what the yandere trope attempts to describe
@@coreblaster6809 im refering to a interview which i believe i watched. he does not mention any names in said interview but do believe he mentions the trope. im not 100% on this and i really don't care to hunt for it. but i have backshift tonight so maybe ill be bored enough to research it. i could of sworn i said i believe i saw it in a interview but apparently i did not mention that bit, sorry bout' that.
and just so this dosnt come off as too confusing. i *think* i watched an interview which stated this a while back.
i think it was the interview he mentioned regretting killing off giffany.
but im not 100% certain if this is a false memory, or if it really was said in an interview.
@altagos9265 when i search "gravity falls regret killing giffany" there are credible results, but not for the other thing. Well, I didn't actually watch the interview anyway, maybe I will to see what it actually days
For REAL i loved these episodes and the Pixel art style they had, they were so SIIIIIIIIICK, Paul Robertson is a G.
Off topic but I still adore Sprite animation from older games like Street Fighter 3rd Strike, Darkstalkers and MVC the sprite animations are just so fluid and organic to me they still hold up and compete with the 3d Styles we have now
You should try M.U.G.E.N it's full of downloadable street fighter art esce characters
3rd strikes sprite work is so smooth.
This might be one of the most underrated videos I've ever seen. Talking about a really cool but underdog-type form of art mixed with one of the best Disney shows ever, all with well-paced, funny, and perfectly descriptive commentary makes this an extremely enjoyable watch.
Edit: I watched "Soos and the Real Girl" after this episode, made for some great nostalgia coupled with my newfound knowledge from this video!
That’s so damn sweet of you to say, thank you so much! ❤️
3:12 honestly, now that I think about it, most of us don't actually hunt for workarounds that we really would need to actually streamline the process. I do think that if pixel art were to fully integrate itself into animation as a whole, you'd need to essentially animate your art as if it is meant for a game, which isn't a bad thing, I think the processes can translate well, like how mocap was introduced with half life 2
Gravity falls predicted DDLC, and FNAF in the same episode,. Change my mind
I would like to see a pixep art tv series. 12 episodes plus the bloopers and behind the scenes episodes.
Plus reusing assets like a video game would make some scenes easier but would remove some creativity.
you might like dorkly
I've seen a few, but it gets a little to chaotic for my taste. Ad that us saying something as i do like some chaos in what i watch.
2:20 the skin of the apple, just beneath the stem has a pixel changed. Also the entire right image is slightly smaller than the left one. Video compression makes this difficult, so I may be incorrect or pointing out the wrong pixel because... well, lossy compression.
i didn't see difference there but i see i extra pixel on tip of a leaf
I hadn’t really thought much about it in this show, but yeah it’s awesome. Most tv shows just do that so-retro mspaint square megaman sprite thing
I remember hand writing the bits behind a static image of a mudkip, which I’m still proud of to this day, that crap took hours! And given I’m pretty sure I missed a line, it was even more difficult because I couldn’t copy off the image on the internet fully
The reason it’s good is because: Paul Robertson. Seriously, anytime I see good examples of pixel art in TV it’s almost always him. That Simpsons intro, all the Adult Swim and Rick & Morty adverts. I wish franchises would hire ACTUAL talented pixel artists and pixel art animators more often.
Ohhh that's why the game characters in Gravity falls seemed familiar, Scott Pilgrim artist.
Of course they also didn't give them some weird 3d effect that some shows do.
(SiIvagunner Kfad related question) Is it just me, or would Rumble and Gif make a formidable duo character, having a very extensive source list including Gravity Falls, Street Fighter, DDLC, FNAF, and other 8-bit musics?
What an excellent video, great analysis! You specifically explained that line of action concept really well- New sub :) from the way you edit you can tell it’s made with passion!
AND IT WAS REALLY FUNNY BTW
As a pixel artist, I 100% agree with you and respect this video. People need to stop putting down pixel artists, especially seeing that an average digital artist would take hella time making pixel art compared to a pixel artist drawing full res digital art.
.GIFanny really does remind me more of those old PC-98/early 2000's IBM-Compatible Visual Novels. The ones where (I suspect) they mostly digitized their art from traditional media. A lot of it is down to what my eyes see as anti-aliasing around the character.
The pixel was moved onto the right end of the apples leaf, but I don't know where the pixel was originally at
man youre such an underrated creator
keep the great work! :D
Thank you so much!!!
Turns out hiring an actual pixel artist gets you good results. Shocker really.
Good video brw
Yeah right??? Almost like professionals are good at their job or something
This sounds obvious until you remember that most professional pixel art nowadays sucks.
You actually have more than eyelash mites. They're actually all over your face, but it usually only comes up when they overpopulate because that causes a rash.
Both of these episodes are some of my favorites. Fight Fighters is like a love letter to 16 bit fighting games like Street Fighter, and Soos and the Real Girl was an homage to both the Yandere tropes and games like DDLC and FNAF
Pretty sure soos and the real girl came out before ddlc and fnaf
@@Notdog610 Oh absolutely
Freddy fazbear is my favorite yandere
Glad you made a video about this! I remember being astonished while rewatching these episodes, wondering how they ever had the skill to make such high-quality sprites!
The tip of the leaf is slightly more pointed
I even remember seeing the pixel art as a kid and going "wow, these people actually played video games"
Its so nice still seeing videos like these popup every now and then🙏ty so much
nice video but you mixed up rogue and rouge (which is common dont worry). Rogue is the word you need as it means a dishonest or unprincipled act, rouge refers to the colour red. (edited cause I phrased it horribly initially)
Wait I did??? Genuinely didn’t notice, I know the difference but I didn’t catch the mixup haha. Thanks for telling me!
Honestly they seem to be made with game development in mind. Like they have to be part of a game while all the examples of bad pixel art is just meant to be part of marketing.
That’s a pretty good way to look at it actually!
another banger vid !! >also U FR humbling me as a non pixle art artist!!! pixle art a labour of love theres alot of thought u have to put into making each design and placing each dang pixle to make sure yo design has clarity>> i tried using asperite and its like i was sent back to the dark ages twas not intuative at all i have alot of respect for u and every pixle artist!!!!! Also the animation went ham for both those episodes i remember the giphany one made lil me tweak tf cause she was scary!! i never noticed how she got more expressive and animated as the episode went on !!! u gon make me rewatch it to appricate it fr
GIFanny is what got me, and many other kids (at the time), into liking yanderes. Didn’t help that DDLC came out at the time, though I wasn’t really into it then, and I was starting to get into anime
Pixel art is very hard but I love the old/simple charm
4/4 of your videos are bangers, if you go on like this, it is just a matter of time til your channel blows up
2:21 the tip of the leave on the right
I can’t believe someone actually did it LMAO, nice spot!
The algorithm needs to boost you bro
These videos are too well made to only have 400 subs
We hope for the day LMAO
Thanks though, appreciate it!
You can also argue any episode Otcho is in from TAWOG
I just want to thank you so much for making this video❤. Its been something that has been on my mind for YEARS but i dont really see many people talk about.
I hope more corporations and shows who plan on intergrating pixelart into whatever they are needing it for take the same time and care like how Gravity Falls did. How much respect i have for Alex to get a actual pixelartist to do the job is a lot! And the outcome is something that brings me inspiration to this day!
Exellent video! I love gravity falls and I think pixel art deserves more recognition as a medium!
No, as someone who made Pixelart for a few years now.
I can very much confirm that pixelart is both one of the easiest and hardest of art mediums there is
Step 1: Hire Paul Robertson
Step 2: Don't think about step 2 that's all you need
2:20 you added a pixel at the tip of the leaf
You say the anime girl is supposed to be a "generic anime girl". I feel like they were trying to go for the more specific type of Yandere girl in anime. Gasai Yuno is an old well known example of this stereotype, she also has the pink hair. This girl is from the anime "Future Diary". Just a little added thought to an excellent video.
my only problem with modern pixel art is that hardware-wise its not how it works... you just dont simply pick any color u want to make an indexed pallette and throw into a 8bit system, it wont work.
8bits have 256 colors, if you want a feel of it i suggest installing pc-paint (i already made some art in it) which has true 8bit and also dithering bucket.
but if ur aiming for a 16bit color pallette u have more freedom too.
ofc the marvel one looks like a less quality pixel art, its friggin based on master system or games for other platforms with similar vibes. but example high quality master system design is fantasy zone... but the average is like how marvel did
Another example of good pixel art in cartoons I want to shout out: The Sandy song sequence from Spongebob's Atlantis Squarepantis special. Basically, the Atlanteans have made a device for shrinking people down by digitizing them (the whole special is a kind of lame Willy Wonka homage) to physically combat germs, and Sandy goes in to rescue Spongebob, Patrick, and Squidward after they accidentally use it.
There's a couple odd details in it they missed the mark on, like the Mario warp pipe reference where the pipe sprite looks super crusty or how the background is done in this super high contrast shaded style while the characters are just flatted, but it's a great effort for the time. I love how the style for the characters isn't clearly emulating anything, they have a nice soft color palette and little to no linework at times, with loads of smear frames presumably as a cheat due to the animators not being experienced with showing precice movements in pixel form. But the overall effect is really cool, imo.
Ive been doing pixel art for like 3 years, im so impressed at all of the art shown in this video, my good art takes probably 15 hours in total, and I dont even know how to animate
ahem, achtually, it's spelled "rogue" not "rouge", which means "red"
gravity falls rocks tho, they did everything right, even refusing to go on despite being super popular, because the story had ended, so no more content-farm shall be done
I only like pixel art when it's done good and have personality
The pixel art in Gravity Falls is done good and have personality
Good video!
Recently saw a clip of a specific Sonic Prime scene so the timing felt perfect
pixel art in gravity falls was in last episodes too and nice video pixel art need more attention
You are not biased you are completely valid I am a detailed duty animator and I am on your side your PixelArt is harder even though with techniques that are used for details TV animation normally takes longer in the spectrum of making it but it doesn’t take very long in the spectrum of plan it
Is there anything even remotely bad about gravity falls?
It's just a very creativ show which just nails evwrything it tries, it's just amazing :)
2:18 the very tip of the leaf got extended by 1 pixel.
they hired a legendaary pixel artist, its no wonder it looks so good
Amazing video! Love the deconstruction of the sprite designs and even the frame counts!
7:10 has bill cipher on the arcade game's screen, crying i never looked back at some episodes to look for 'em
.GIFfany is by far my FAVORITE Gravity Falls character, because I really relate to her obsessive behaviors, since I'm autistic and often obsess over people. My obsessions are harmless, but people HAVE been scared of me in the past because they know I obsess over people. I was actually grieving when .GIFfany died, because I sympathized with her obsessive behaviors and was sad that they killed my favorite character. .GIFfany went from a girl I thought was hot to being an actual character I related to the more I researched her. I know, I'm a loser with no life.
14:22 Apparently Hirsch also guessed Lethal Company :P
Absolutely brilliant
the fucking coincidence around DDLC coming 3 years after Giffany is so huge, it's almost unbelievable....
has there been any japanese dating sim horror subversion before both of these?
great video! keep it up
This video is so high quality I didn't realise my sub count is almost up to this guys lol
2:19 the leaf's end
I now gotta have to make a short series in pixel art after you talked about the stuff
I’d watch the HELL out of that
welp I now have to because of your reply but I have no clue how to voice act or even convert a GIF to MP3 (I use piskel) but I will accept that challenge@@sparkyspritesstuff
I can't believe two of my favourite episodes was worked on by one of my favourite pixel artist ever
thought i saw the once pixel and realized it was just dust on my screen
So those little areas where they’re shading I’m not sure it’s called Salcedo it’s a very well he’s technically very commonly used to gravity falls to
7:10 i never noticed this before but the guy on the right (the america guy) is playing a game with bill cipher on it. I've watched this show 4 times and only now am I noticing this.
I seear ive heard that outro music before, but i cant pinpoint whete. Darn it.
It’s “Mabe Village” from the link’s Awakening remake on the switch!
@@sparkyspritesstuff that's what it is. I haven't played the remake but I could swear I heard that melody before, and I did play the original back in the day, but it's been so long.. Oh thank goodness I'm not crazy..

The video game type stuff in this show is the only good pixel art ive ever seen, everything like Sonic Prime is kinda garbage
gumball used pixel art as well and it looked good as well

I think it might be rogue ai not rouge ai at 13:35
The video misspells "rogue" as "rouge" more than once. Rouge is a real word, so basic spellcheckers probably won't point out the error.
The gungeon music threw me off until you started the gameplay lol
I love the soundtrack and it sounded “tech” enough for the topic lolz
