    I signed up for my highschool rugby team today and I have no idea what I'm gonna do. I played defensive end for my football team so I might be a forward. Wish me luck boys

      Yes, if you're a defensive player - you're better off as a forward.
      If you like to push people around, the 'lock' position is probably best to suit your skills.

    a conversion is a kick that can be taken as far back as the kicker wants to but must stay in line of where the ball placed when the try was scored. A penalty is kick which is taken from the spot which the penalty was awarded.

    one rule i find fascinating is In Touch On the Full. Let me explain, In touch on the Full means the ball has been kicked out with out it bouncing on the ground first, this distinction will be important later. When you are in your own 22 meter area you are aloud to kick the ball In Touch on the Full. But if you are outside the 22 or run it back, then if you kick the ball In Touch on the Full the opposing team gets a lineout from where the ball was kicked, not where it lands.

      @NinhLyUK  7 років тому +4

      In Union, you can't steal the ball from the front, you have to go around the ruck, which most of the time is guarded by players. Sometimes it's easier to get the ball whilst in transition than it is at the ruck. Or force the team to give you a penalty instead.

    Hi Ninh. great short summary of the laws of rugby. if you don't mind me giving feedback, the conversion does not have to be taken 20 meters back nor is it illegal to block the conversion. kickers can be as close as they like but risk having the kick blocked. also moving back improves the 'angle' on kicks near the touchline :)

    I've been watching the Six Nations to try and get my head around the rules before the World Cup but I still get slightly confused about why players sometimes deliberately kick the ball out of bounds. Is this some sort of tactical thing or what?

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 років тому +14

      Hi Henry 52
      Excellent question!
      If a player is awarded a penalty (but they're too far away from successfully scoring), they can choose to kick the ball in touch (out of the playing area).
      The rules stipulate that after a Penalty, the team with the Penalty will retain possession of the ball. In this case, after the ball is kicked into touch - they are awarded a Line-Out from where the ball left the field of play.
      Hope that helps? Be sure to share and subscribe :)

      Henry 52 Any time!

    • @GwresYnKernow
      @GwresYnKernow 9 років тому +9

      Henry 52 Additionally, if you're on your own side of your own 22 meter line ("in your own 22"), you can kick the ball out and get the lineout from where it went into touch, even if it's not a penalty. You'll see teams doing this quite often. However this only applies if the opposition brought the ball into your 22 to begin with. The most common time you'll see this is if the opposition kicker messes up and the ball doesn't make it into touch, the defending fly half or fullback will usually return the kick rather than run with the ball, as it's safer (unless he's a Kiwi. New Zealand will run with the ball in most circumstances because even their fullbacks are built like tanks).
      You're not allowed to run back over your own 22, then kick the ball into touch. That'd be a lineout to your opponents from where you kicked the ball.
      Hope that's not too confusing. :)

    Ninh Ly the video of the penalty isn't a penalty, it is a conversion. Why? because when there is a penalty the players of the opposite team can't move.

    As an American, this singular video about rugby was more entertaining and interesting to watch than any game of football I’ve ever seen, I’ve never seen a football player get lifted into the air by their teammates, and you can’t just chuck the ball to the end of the field to a guy who just hauled ass there and catches it

    Thanks for another great video. I think us new American fans struggle with some of the more advanced rules of the game. In no particular order I think the rules that draw the most questions are: (1) what goes on at the bottom of the ruck and what governs the counter-ruck, (2) the different types of kicking into touch, and (3) why certain penalties are called when a scrum breaks down.

    • @boondoxroxsox
      @boondoxroxsox 7 років тому +4

      That doesn't just confuse Americans, it confuses any casual rugby watcher of any nationality. The scrums and rucks have become far too complex and they can often stop the free flowing nature of the game.

    • @basedbulgarian511
      @basedbulgarian511 10 місяців тому

      The ruck has a few simple rules:
      - Don't use your hands to dig the ball out of the ruck
      - Stay on your feet if you want to be involved
      - Only enter the ruck from the front
      The way to win the ball in a ruck is to push opposing players away from the ball and/or dig it out with your feet

    • @basedbulgarian511
      @basedbulgarian511 10 місяців тому

      There's three types of kicks into touch:
      - kick during play: if you kick the ball into touch during live play, the other team gets the throw in at a lineout at the spot where the ball crossed the touch line
      - 50-22: special type of touch kick where if you kick into touch from your own half into the opponent's 22, you get the ball at the lineout at the spot where the ball crossed the touchline.
      - At a free kick: for any penalty more severe than a knock on or forward pass, the team awarded the penalty has the option to free kick down the field for territory gain. A free kick into touch awards the ball at the lineout to the team awarded the penalty.

    • @basedbulgarian511
      @basedbulgarian511 10 місяців тому

      The scrum has a bunch of penalties, but the main ones are
      - no standing up
      - no falling down/stay on your feet
      - no "wheeling" the scrum: when a team pushes harder on one side more than the other and it results in the scrum rotating

    I'm wondering, would a video on rugby sevens be merited? It's true that sevens is a form of union, but it's got some rule differences. For instance, in sevens, all conversions and penalty goals must be drop kicked.

      "All conversions and penalty goals must be drop kicked."
      Which is why, unless the try is scored *right* behind the goal posts, they almost always miss the conversion kick.

      +Tom Fussell Here's the major differences 1. 7 men on each team on the field at anyone time. 2. 7 mins each half cant remember long the half's are played during finals but its longer then seven mins. 3 after you score your team has to take the restarting kick off. other then those differences the rules are genuinely the same as rugby union.

    Hey im just wondering what's the "main league" in rugby like American Football has the NFL

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 років тому +4

      King Waffel
      Depends which country you live in?
      There are many different top level leagues such as Premeirship Rugby in England, Super Rugby across Australia and south Africa, Pro12 for Scotland, Ireland, Wales etc. But I think the highest calibre has to be the international rugby competitions between countries.
      Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share and subscribe.

      To add to what he said, "World Rugby" is about the closest to an NFL equivalent.

    • @boondoxroxsox
      @boondoxroxsox 8 років тому +3

      Rugby is a global game, so, like soccer, different countries have different leagues. Because American Football is only played in America, there is just the NFL. I mean there's the CFL and I think there's a semi-pro league in Japan, but by and large there is no international competition in American Football. The largest stage in rugby union is the world stage i.e. International test matches. This would be like New Zealand and Australia playing each other. The best of the best play for their international teams. When international competition isn't going on, these players will play for their clubs. Club competitions are domestic. France has the Top 14 league, England has the Premiership, Japan has the Top League etc. International players play for these clubs all over the world along with players that don't quite meet international test rugby standards. However, all of these players are full-fledged professionals and are still very good at what they do.

    Can you throw overhand backwards? Why would you ever kick it down the field to the other team when you could toss it to your own teammate. I'm just an American trying to watch this world championship and understand it. Lol

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  8 років тому +3

      +BlazetheCreative So long as the ball goes backwards or sideways, yes.
      Unlike in American Football, in Rugby Union - field position is sometimes more advantageous than possession of the ball.
      They'll boot the ball down-field and they try and force mistakes from the other team giving them easy penalties or possession of the ball in a better position on the field. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

      Kicking down field in Rigby is used for two reasons...first it's like a punt in American Football...your too close to your own goalline..better to get it out of there and play defense.
      second it's a way to advance the ball forward...if a player is behind the kicker on his team and runs down the ball he can advance it...the rugby version of a Hail Mary!
