      I've been asking basically the same question across all the trades. I do collision repair but on regular cars and trucks. The last icar training I went to there was only one guy there younger than me. I'm in my early 40's and one of the youngest guys in the industry. The old guys are already calling us parts changers instead of real body men. They're repairing stuff that should be replaced but that's a different story for a different day. These trades have to change soon or there's not going to be anyone to do the work. Pay needs to increase significantly to start with. How about working conditions? Anti fatigue flooring and air conditioning would be a good start. Benefits. Not a single independent shop I worked at offered any sort of benefits.

      @@aaadamt964 Well, unfortunately, "parts changers" is part of today's society since we've become a throw away society. A slight "ding", replace it, instead of actually fixing it, then you have plastic body parts... yea, part changers. Sorry but it is what it is. Vehicles 30-40 yrs ago, made way better than today's junk, again, I'm old school.

    I have been reusing U bolts for 40 years without an issue providing they are not damaged, if they are sprung a little just put a clamp on them to get them back in the axle, Living in a small town where parts aren't readily available and usually days away for delivery you make do with what you have.

    What I'm seein' is a financial professional/business owner at work! I couldn't imagine what it took to get that kind of operation off the ground financially and what kind cash flow coming in the door "daily". You must have employees, so all the expenses that go with that are astronomical. You've some amazing tooling there and the skills to operate them. I can only hope you have a son or family member to pass on what you built. What you have is rare in today's environment. Mike Rowe should interview you. I used to be a construction mechanic so most of my truck work was layin' on piece of plywood over the mud/rocks to tighten the front axle ubolts with 40" long Snapon 3/4" drive ratchet. So, I recognized some of the components your working on.

    you are a breath of fresh air in a clusterphuk jam packed of painfull "tradie" content. im a heavy fabricator engineer/boilermaker building custom truck and heavy vehicle bodys for things farm or forestry units and fleets of lil service trucks.. ive seen it all as it seem you have too 😅 i feel the pain in having to explain or deal with previous halfpie workmanship ❤

    So many people don't check for worn parts before alignments it's crazy, not a big rig guy here, just do automotive alignments at the shop I work at. It's a shame but a ton of guys out there aren't checking everything over properly before beginning alignment. Especially be weary of chain tire shops. Typically they're not checking suspension parts adjusting proper tire pressure before beginning. And alott of places they're just doing a Toe and Go, so they just adjust toe regardless of it it's needed, don't touch anything else, but they do the toe because then they changed the alignment and thus can justify charging the alignment.

      I've had the opposite experience at several chain shops. Get a vehicle, completely rebuild front end at home. Take it in to get alignment only for them to call me saying i need a bunch of parts. I always ask for quote, and ask store manager to point out bad parts cause "I'm sure they should still be good". When he starts pointing and realizes everything is NEW. I respond i was thought they'd be good i just installed them yesterday, that's why i need an alignment. Usually about then is when he notices my snap-on, hat, shirt, hoodie or jacket if it's cold.... Keyring and i always leave Snap-on 1/2" torque wrench on passenger seat so any mechanic paying attention is forewarned not to be stupid.

    Interesting stuff. I never really experienced alignment stuff when I was an apprentice diesel mechanic, we did straighten out some tipping trailers that had turned over on landfills using the Winches on my company's tow truck.

    With the tighter turning tractors. You can really tell who has a hard time in tight places. I've seen steer tires with the outside edge bald as can be with 3/8 inch of groove left on 3/4 of the tire. Especially up here in the North East with short dock space and 53 foot trailers.

    In the south it's better to have a little extra castor. The high pitched roads for rain drainage will often cause factory recommendations to drift.
    Drag cars use ridiculous castor settings. 😂🤣

    I straightened the center link on an old Freighliner (they wouldn't buy a new one). Set the toe like that with a scribed line. That truck drove good. ❤ I could use some caster shims for my F450. Where could I get them easily?

    Sure that's a Bendix steer assist with ZF stamped on the side? In combination with the VDRU (Detroit assurance or WABCO Ongaurd and Onside radars) collision mitigation system. In combination with the ABS, Engine and transmission ECM, and the electronic stability control system ESC. In that case the yaw rate sensor is tripped, setting a fault in the ABS requiring the steering angle sensor SAS to be calibrated and the end of line procedure conducted. 😊 also note make sure you dont have any J1939 CAN communication issues.

    Why can't you reuse, u bolts. Back in the late 70's we kinda used them again. We had a bearing go bad on the front-end, we had a spare front-end and just unbolted it and bolted the new one without changing the u-bolts was that bad. Nothing ever happened to the front-end

      I've done that too, however, like head bolts they stretch when torqued, so it's recommended to replace.

      @@calvins1837 new ones stretch, they have to be retorqued after 500 miles, and again at 10000 miles, show me the manual that says they are one time use

      @youtubeisawesome2487 if they are TTY or torque to yield, they need replaced. If a bolt is torqued past is limit, it won't 'spring' back when loosened. So the recommendation to replace is because you don't know unless a manufacturer specifies that a fastener was TTY or not, or whether someone before you over torqued a bolt. A shop will most always replace them, to save from having a come back. BTW hope you and everybody out there is having a great memorial day weekend.

      @@calvins1837 Some bolts are able to be reused if they have not elongated beyond the manufactures parameter. Elongation can varie from bolt to bolt within a single set and job.
      Litigation is probably the biggest risk. cheers,

    What causes CHOPPIN,
    I supervise 5 tree crews w/ bucket trucks . Everyone of my bucket trucks have " CHOPPIN " On the drive tires , how can I correct this issue

      Air pressures, alignments, driver habits, hitting curbs, kinda i. Your business, running retread tires, your casings? Or taking what the tire shop has laying around if the casing for the retread is cupped it will show on the retread in no time running real aggressive treads dont help just 15 years of fixing truck telling what to check

      Technical term is cupping or scalloping. It's most often caused by weak shocks. The tire literally bounces when rotating. You're not talking a huge amount of "bounce". It's more so the uneven pressure being put on the tire as opposed to the tire actually hopping off the road surface. Other things CAN also cause cupping like worn suspension components. Once a tire is cupped you can NOT reverse the damage. But rotating the tires so they turn in the opposite direction AFTER fixing the suspension issue will stop it from getting worse.

      . -Cupping is smooth waves in the tire tread.
      -Chopping, or "heel toe wear" is when the tread resembles a chop saw blade(circular saw blade), usually caused by mismatch pressures, or when one tire in the set has more tread than the other.

    Just curious. At around 8:30, you were about to say something about camber but stopped yourself. You were going to say you can't adjust camber from that location on the vehicle, weren't you? Because if you did finish the sentence, you would have a bunch of people arguing with you. You're right, of course, but I just couldn't help but laugh.

      @@youtubeisawesome2487 Just about every alignment angle effects every other alignment angle, when you adjust it. However, that has absolutely nothing to do with what I was asking. Don't take this the wrong way, but if you read my post, you'll see I mentioned that my guess was he was trying to avoid arguments with other posters who don't have the same understanding as to how it all works. Posts just like yours are what I was referring to.

      They all do affect each other but how would the forward or rearward tilt of the steering knuckle affect camber since camber is the inward or outward tilt of same knuckle. I see how his shim tilted the axle itself changing the caster angle but I'm not picturing it affect camber all that much.

      @@keith6943 when you change caster it changes the tilt of the axle, the kingpin is not straight, camber is the angle the projects the spot the tire hits forward of the axle, loading the truck with weak springs can throw all the angles off, or those stupid air bag conversions you see everyone doing, the good thing is caster (steering wheel return when you let go of it) and camber are handling angles, toe is a wear angle, when caster is too high it darts (hard to hold straight) all manual steer gear box axles have caster of one so you dont fight the hard steer. there are 17 angles on a truck steer axle, 13 are measureable, 3 are adjustable.

      @@keith6943 That's actually correct. However, the way the industry handles certain things is a bit messed up. In the video he was talking about adjusting caster, then stopped himself before he went on to camber. Your caster line runs through the 2 pivot points on your steering system. Upper and lower ball joints, lower ball joints and upper strut plate, etc... Caster line then gets referenced to true vertical, and any difference, positive or negative, is you caster angle. (Its always positive unless the vehicle has been in some type of accident, or problem. Most people don't realize that your caster line is used to make another angle called steering axis inclination angle (SAI). That's because you're working in 3 directions. In order to adjust caster, you need to move one, or both pivot points lengthwise with the vehicle. If you move a pivot point crosswise, you adjust SAI. Camber is a vertical line that runs through the centerline of the wheel itself, and gets referenced to true vertical. In order to adjust camber you need to adjust the tilt of the wheel itself.
      Here's the problem, and what I believe he was referring to in the video. Many vehicles have you adjust camber by moving something that alters the crosswise position of one, or both of the steering's pivot points. Cam bolts on a lower control arm. Shims on an upper control arm. Slots on the top of the strut plate, etc... And its true. All of those adjustments will effect camber. But its not a direct camber adjustment. Its indirect. Its really an SAI adjustment, and camber changes because the wheel bolts to the spindle, and the spindle connects to the 2 pivot points. Its not necessary to move pivot points to adjust camber. A more direct adjustment is something like slotted bolt holes where the spindle bolts to the bottom of a strut. That will change camber without altering your pivot points.
      What's kind of unbelievable is the industry ignores this for some reason. They all say SAI is not adjustable, yet they have you directly alter it to adjust camber. If you have taken your ASE's, they word it by saying, SAI is not "considered" to be adjustable. SAI is extremely important for how a vehicle handles.
      Anyway, it was a good call on your part because most people wouldn't have thought it through, and you did.

    U bolts are simple to replace and bend up yourself. If you've got the tools that is. Different rod sizes and lengths. That truck prob has 3/4 20in rods

      @sinisatrlin840 I forgot it's a Volvo , I was half sleep and prob should of just went to bed. My bad. I was dam close though because if they needed that truck on road and there wasn't any 20 mm rods handy, guess what size I'm trying first, and if I don't like it then we go to 13/16 buy I'm pretty sure the 3/4 gonna handle that. Long as I was bending U bolts Noone ever asked me for a metric rod, seriously. I'm not saying that to be a dik bro, Noone ever asked for metric, never even thought of that till you made comment.

    If there already a shim in there do you just add another or remove it and add what's needed or do another reading and install one proper thickness shim to solve issue?
