Apparently Klimenko went with the Thomas salto on FX for Elena to save her landing on her weakened leg after it had not recovered correctly from being broken. Unfortunately the skill, if under-rotated, would cause the gymnast to land on their neck instead! However, the to-be Olympic champion and teammate Elena Davydova had mastered the skill and performed it in amazing fashion at the Olympics that July. There was huge pressure for Elena to perform the skill as well because Klimenko wanted to be the coach of an olympian. Elena tried, but the skill went wrong, and she became paralyzed. She did live 26 years afterwards but it was a reclusive life. Overall she had a life of hard knocks but she faced it all with courage and grace. That's the way I would like to remember her. 🥀🌹

Only half of the captions are visible. The rest are cut off at the bottom. I’d really like to know the whole story…

She was a Russian gymnast who had broken her leg in 1978 and her coaches rushed her back into training and competing to make the 1980 Olympics. They also forced her to add a risky Thomas Salto tumbling move (a men's gymnastics move created by Kurt Thomas that is a 1½ backflip with 1½ twists ending in a forward roll) to her routine. She ended up landing on her chin and breaking her neck, leaving her a permanent quadriplegic.

@@barbaraferrell5451 Do you know if the last line reads, "Thank God I won't be going to the Olympics"? If it does, that is perhaps the most tragic thing of all.

The Soviet system chewed up everyone attached to it. This young woman's life was destroyed by a system that desired a gold medal more than a gymnasts life.

Do you think capitalists are saint

    • @heidimelendez5623

@imworldbank5442 Capitalists are good at making money. They suck at caring about anyone or anything else. Without government oversight, they would lock children in sweat shops and work them 16 hours a day, seven days a week. If they got hurt, no big deal, there is always another kid. The toxic byproducts would be tossed into any nearby water source or any yard. (Everything here has actually happened) Our government, when it works, allows capitalism to function and make money while protecting workers, children, and the environment. Communism as written by Karl Marx, is beautiful and idealistic. Unfortunately, as lovely as it sounds on paper, it has no real word use. What happens when it is applied is dictatorship. The rulers share everything with their class, and the lower class starves to death.

@imworldbank5442 No, they aren't saints. But child abuse for the benefit of the state would not happen.

É verdade...com a diferença, de que a Elena era uma escrava do estado soviético...treinava desde criança, cada vez mais duro...até ficar paralítica, em um desses treinos...e morrer...

Are we even surprised that it happened to a Russian? Some countries are just cruel to their people. Can you imagine how they will treat you if you’re not Russian?
I have russian friends and they would never step foot in that country again.
