Anita Baker was a huge star, bigger than many during her height. Platinum-selling albums, countless awards, sold out tours, admiration from fans and other artists, etc. Yes, much of her success was R&B, but most her of her albums were Pop successes as well, and the Jazz charts too. The "Giving You The Best That I Got" album was a #1 Pop & R&B album. The "Rapture" album sold nearly 10 million copies worldwide. Grammy Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. She did so much. The problem is that she stopped her career in 1995 and disappeared for 10 years, and she lost a lot of momentum. But her impact was not forgotten. She still sold out concert halls, and inspired so many younger vocalists. So when you say "not as big as", I'm like who are you talking about? Her Farewell Concert Tour lasted over 2 years, and it ended in December 2019 at The Staples Center in Los Angeles, which is a huge arena, and she sold it out. I was there. Anita is a treasure and loved by many.
I agree with your discussion of her mix of R&B and jazz. You're exactly right. In fact, i think I agree with most everything you said. I was in my 20s when this LP came out and 35 years later you're thinking what I was when i first heard it. Great music is timeless.
There isn't a single modern-day artist in the same league as Anita Baker and the other amazingly talent artist of the 80's and 90's. Beyonce and Rhianna types would be low end talents back in the 80's and 90's,
You can listen to two of your top 20, Anita and Babyface, together on duet. She won Gospel Grammy too with the Winans (Ain’t no need to worry). She sang what she wanted, her songs were hits on pop charts too. (And sang duets with Frank Sinatra, James Ingram and others). She very purposefully stepped away from the business to focus on her kids. Not many artists can release albums decades apart and have them do well like she did. Not a miss on Rapture, her sophomore solo album.

Anita was 🔥 she stepped back from the industry for her family but she doesn't have to prove anything she one of the greats
It might also be because from what I heard she suffered from stage fright. Though oh my goodness I could never get enough of her singing.

That's right got to let them know plus Anita stepped back from the industry for her family not because she couldn't get a job
And won a Grammy in Gospel duets too with the Winans
I was fortunate enough to see her in person. She was a tiny woman, but man could she belt! Enjoyed all her stuff.
Yasssss! Body, Vocals, & Looks!

So much better than the video. Rips your heart out. God Bless Anita Baker. Perfect.
I LOVE LOVE ANITA!!
