I knew the man who owned Mackinnon's pub--Bill the Fish.He started put selling fish round the backgreens, and ended up with several shops and this pub. A great wee man.

Remember buying pigeons not far from here , they were given in a brown paper bag which you had to remove so you could hide them up your jumper in case the " big guys " took them from us . Some funny looks on the bus going home ............LOL! .

See as a Bulgarian I take a bit of an issue with the Battle of the Shipka Pass being described as simply a "battle between the Russians and the Turks", given that 2/3 of the force opposing the Turks was actually Bulgarian volunteers (opalchentsi) who were fundamental to winning the battle. Very sad that there's no street with a Bulgarian name in Glasgow now, especially as it seems Schipka Pass was a fascinating place with beautiful architecture 😢

They could find the money to tart the city up for the games and tourists but when it comes to doing anything for the native population they would rather drive us out of the city to keep it pretty for the tourists and the hoteliers to profiteer on the back of poverty wages paid to migrant workers who are exploited to the max. I very occasionaly go back to Glasgow and I dont recognise the city. most of the people of my generation had to choose, stay and face the insecurity of disapearing industry or leave the city and have something of a future to look forward too. I was told by an aunty in the 1970 that the powers that be had decided that Scotland was to stripped of industry and turned into a tourism area, it looks like thats what has happened. was it a lucky guess by her or has that been the plan for 50+ years ? we will probably never know
