I'm starting from the beginning and working my way to present. Just wanted to say you guys are on point, that was a pretty nautical crossing! Once again Gary accidently demonstrates his ability understand and repair just about anything.
Thanks for going back and watching from the beginning! We have come quite a long way since we started this journey. So thankful for Gary's ability to dive in to anything thrown our way. His persistence and can do attitude have saved our butts many many times!
I watch a lot of cruising videos and yours are among my top 5. This my second time watching the series. My Sailing days over now that I a old and poor health. Your positive attitude and wandering adventures kindle memories of my sailing younger days
Hey Mickey! Thank you, we really appreciate your comment! We are happy to hear you are enjoying our videos and we look forward to sharing more adventures with you. Hope you have a great holiday!
@@SailingOneLife it’s raining and chilly here in South Georgia.. but enjoying the best we can. Going to Kayak the River tomorrow and Sunday. So it will get better! Where are y’all at now? Have you guys made it to St. Martin yet?
@@georgiaairborne2364 Kayaking on the river sounds super fun! Hopefully the weather will be okay for you. We are still in Statia. The diving here has sucked us in. It's absolutely beautiful here. I'll definitely be letting you know when we head to St. Martin so you can give us the good tips!
@@SailingOneLife Statia is awesome. The diving for sure is off the chain.. yes y’all do that! I’m hoping it will clear up tomorrow and will be nice. Would rather be in the Caribbean right now..
I know I repeatedly say this, but here I go again. I love watching your sailing adventures. Your a sweet, fun loving couple that enjoys going outside the box for a little extra adventure. I don't know if I told you before, but I was the first mate on a large, wood, staysail schooner in the early 1970's. The boat was called Revenge. The same designer who build America built Revenge. I was also a rock music at the time so it was a little crazy. No, it was a lot crazy. Anyways, enough about me. It sucks not having audio pilot. We had a compass and a sexton. Giggles! Oh' yea, and a lot of groupies onboard. Stay groovy and stay safe.
You did not tell us that you were a first mate and a rock star! Wow! How much fun was that?! We can only imagine all the craziness. Sounds like an amazing time for sure! Guess we shouldn't complain about the autopilot......people cruise(d) with so much less equipment!
Just found y’all and we are enjoying watching and learning...noobs here! We are looking to get auto pilot soon and fear getting the wrong one. Which one is throwing fits at you? Believe we are going with CPT. Happy sailing and looking forward to following your journey!
Hey guys! Thanks for watching as we learn too! Our autopilot is a Garmin system with an electro-mechanical linear drive made by Jefa. Our boat is right at the top end of the displacement range for that drive. We love the Garmin system, just wish the drive unit had been upsized to the next size up (which happens to be a hydraulic linear drive.) No personal experience with the CPT, but for a wheel drive system I have heard good things. One advantage of a separate linear drive down at the quadrant vs a wheel drive is that if a steering cable snaps you still have a method of turning the rudder. Either way, with proper installation any of the systems should be reliable.
I'm wondering if you are thinking about adding a wind vane steering thing at this point. I don't know much about them but I'm guessing you can have both. I guess I'll find out in future episodes!
The problem with a wind vane for us is the dinghy davits on our stern deck. We have considered removing the dinghy davits and making an arch for solar and space for a wind vane......maybe one day. But yes, keep watching! There's lots of autopilot fun in the videos to come. 😂
We were in Rodney Bay last March when everything closed down. This changed our plans for a Summer in Curacao. We waited almost 2 months to see if anything would change, obviously it didn't so we sailed back to the US East coast. I think I would rather be in St Lucia than Dominica but thats just my opinion. I enjoy your videos, especially when we are stuck in the US right now.
Bummer about not being able to head to Curacao! It is still quite a challenge to move between countries with all the quarantine and testing regulations constantly changing. Hopefully the vaccines will make logistics a bit easier soon. Glad you're enjoying the videos!
Have you added a wind vane since this video? Seems like having both a mechanical and wind vane autopilot is good. From what I've seen in many videos, people really seem to like their wind vane devices once they get them figured out.
We still haven't added a wind vane, but now have an oversized hydraulic autopilot drive unit waiting to install when we haul out in a few months. A windvane would be nice, but would be quite a project to get installed. Most would interfere with our dinghy davits on the stern, and line routing to our center cockpit helm would be complicated. Something with it's own rudder and no lines to the helm (such as Hydrovane) could work for us, but the cost is crazy. Wind vanes certainly are great for small boats. But we also see a lot of catamarans and big monohulls circumnavigating with a below-decks autopilot, so we think the drive upgrade will meet our needs.
A real cruising boat has two independent autopilots on board. On a small boat like yours it probably should be a windvane and quadrant mounted autopilot. A hydraulic ram and control, not the little toy electric devices common on production "passage makers." Is Bequia still the sweetest island in the Caribbean?
Bequia is an absolute gem! We loved the vibe there, and having easy access to amazing dive sites made it even better! We have since purchased a hydraulic drive, have it on board, and will be installing it when we are hauled out in a couple months. But hey, we have made it nearly 10,000 miles now with the undersized electric drive, so we'd say a real cruising boat is one that just keeps on cruising, autopilot(s) or not!
Please please don't follow the trend and make 90% of your video talking heads. Keep with your wonderful mix of dive, drone, and location shots combined with the background monologue, and maybe don't submit until you have it. You are really good at the mixology making your story a very smooth and exciting one.
Second time bingeing this series.
Thanks so much, Paul! 💙

Oh and the diving is our favorite part to share but unfortunately we just couldn't find any good diving in St. Lucia. Is was quite a bummer!

Everyone overuses SUPER

Plastic gears??
Hey David! Somehow we missed this comment. Yes, plastic gears are used so the gears fail first before more extensive damage to the drive.
