Hey, I figured you should know that there is one weapon that comes close to the Ebony Staff in enchantment value: The Ebony Scimitar from Tribunal, the non-enchanted version has an enchantment value of 80, just 10 shy of the Ebony Staff's 90. You could squeeze that into an annotation or something.
I'd also like to point out that the Ebony Staff is more geared towards being used as the 'Magic Machine Gun' via Cast When Used effects are in play since caster players will try and keep their distance, and the Ebony Scimitar is more for the Cast When Strikes effect is used so the effect is applied each successful attack. You could mention the benefits of enchanting magnitudes on a different video if you haven't already. Short blades might use weaker effects since they get applied more often, bringing their potential damage up, and stuff like a Daedric Battle-Axe would get a really big hard-hitting effect for that over-kill value. If it hasn't been covered in any of your guides yet, do make sure to mention how the Cast When Strikes effect is pointless for bows and they're better off with Cast When Used, especially if a new player decides to enchant a Daedric Longbow that's say, been given to them by that tucked-away Hlaalu counciler when finding that Ebony Mine. I'm trying to avoid too much spoilers here.
Yeah, I get you. Eventually I'd like to make a guide dedicated entirely to enchanting being as it's, in my opinion, one of the coolest things about having a late-game character. You should also mention that for Constant Effect buffs, it might be better to do a 1-x amount to get more out of the spell, barring a massive drain skill effect for the absolute mix-maxing. Let's say I'm about to take on Gedna Relvel in Tribunal, who has a spell that does 100-200 points of Fire, Frost, and Poison damage and I'm playing a Nord wearing the Dragonbone Cuirass, all I'd need then is a way to reach 100% poison resistance and only her melee attacks would be able to hurt me then. By setting it with 1-x, I could re-equip the piece of gear over and over until I got the highest amount possible. I know this is all pretty standard knowledge to long-term Morrowind players, but these videos are meant for newer players, and they are going to need all the help they can get with Morrowind. Not to mention the value of Cast When Strikes and offensive Cast When Used effects start to diminish in the expansion packs because of all the amounts of spell reflect. That last part is why I actually use a mod that changes all instances of ability-induced Spell Reflect into Spell-Absorption, so playing something like a Battlemage or offensive caster isn't so hair-raising.

12:50 - I am a relatively new player in Morrowind and have started a Bosmer.. with Hand-to-Hand Major Skill. Got to 100 after 6 hours of beating fishes around the ariving city. Overleveling up to 50/10 and using only a Bow as other weapon. Yeah, I'm starting anew.. again.
I just started playing last night.... and I stayed up till 5 am (very unintentionally). The melee combat has been frustrating so far, but I actually thing the stab/chop/slash animation is more rewarding than oblivion
Hmm, from what I remember the melee animations in Oblivion were pretty cool, especially when you progressed into Journeyman, Expert, etc. I haven't played it in a long time but what I do remember is the crippled skill tree and magic system.
Started Morrowind for the first time last year. Must say it’s a breath of fresh air, and these guides of yours made understanding the game more feasible. Many thanks, sir!
Starting a new Modded playthrough, this video shined a lot of light on things I did not know. I've played Morrowind for years, but the combat always threw me through a loop. Anyway, I want to do my first Magic build, Yes I've played all the Elder scrolls but the magic never been my thing, so this should be interesting! Anyway subbed, when the multiplayer mod comes out we should do a video together!
Right on man, magic in Morrowind can get pretty crazy-awesome when you get high level. Hehe, and I almost wonder if we actually get Elder Scrolls 6 before that multiplayer mod gets done and stable. Either way, got something to look forward to. ^_^
I recently had the bright idea that I would do a Khajit build and try to beat the main quest and others with hand to hand without ever using a weapon and avoiding using armor and wanted to check what the actual damage formulas were to see if maybe I had dug myself too deep a hole
Morrowind is difficult in the beginning but then as you go ahead thing get better and better. I picked this game for the original xbox back in 2004 and played the game 20 hours and sold it thinking is was no good. later, I played Oblivion and years later Skyrim which I found great and my favorite games of all times. now, in the year 2020 downloaded steam and decided to follow up and get well informed about Morrowind until i finally downloaded the game and guess what? The game is awesome once you start to learn the mechanics and get deep into it. I was a fool. So, don't let that happen to you or because of graphics because Morrowind is one of the greatest RPG of all time
3:58 "lacking important information" Are you SERIOUS? A BETHESDA game...with tooltips that are incomplete or inaccurate? Come on. That's crazy talk. I'm going back to Skyrim. You know, the game where Magic Absorption is literally described 100% opposite of how it really works.
IDK if you or anyone else will see this, but I have an argument against always use best attack. Damage types affect how you move in combat. Using axes? You'll need to stand in place to ready a chop. Blades? Great for circling around since they slash well. Spears? The range is great, but god help you if you don't have room to backpedal. It might not be a huge deal but I think it factors into the gameplay enough that use best attack is slightly cheaty.
Imagine if morrowind wasn't a diceroll game and all hits and spells would be casted 100% of the time people would be crying and saying it's harder than all the darksouls games combined
ebony staves are ridiculous. I made one which has Absorb Health, can't remember the magnitude but it kills Ascended Sleepers with 2 attacks (the 1st attack deprives them of well over 3/4 of their health), all while _healing you_
Armando de Chiara For sure! I've seen a few people doing playthroughs of the game in which they only ever use enchantments to play the game. Pretty fun idea. Hahaha, granted it probably gets pretty easy real fast once you start stockpiling enchanted items.
Lyle Shnub I did too, because I used to roleplay a "pure warrior". It's still perfectly doable and fun, to be fair, but enchantments are _way_ over the top!
Gotta watch this guide so I can prove to myself I can beat Morrowind in 2022 😂 games have become too dumbed down and this game has always been a classic
Hey, I just got this game on Steam recently and was wondering if you can give me some tips. I'm completely new to this game (just did the tutorial) what would you recommend I do? Any idea where I can get a starting out weapon? I have 15 long blade, so I need a sword from that category. BTW nice video :)
Is your highest melee skill at 15? If you're gonna be a melee character, it's ideal to have one at 30 minimum if it's your first time playing. Anyway, there's a couple good long blades you can get early on. If you head out of Seyda Neen and take the left fork in the road (West, away from the Silt Strider) you can get an enchanted long blade from a wizard who falls from the sky onto the road. There's also a Sword of White Woe inside of the Balmora guard towers. Should be in the Balmora Eastern Guard Tower according to uesp. I think it's on top of a wardrobe, a little hidden.
Unless you it is your first hour playing morrowind, I recommend NOT changing the option of “always do best attack”. If you want to play an RPG and not an action adventure game. The game teaches you to use each weapon effectively through it’s better and worse attacks. With spears the chop and slash do almost no damage. Thrusting does high damage. How do you thrust? By moving forward or backwards. So the game is teaching you that if you use a spear, you want to be kiting back and forth for your attacks. This is great, because with the long attack range of spears, you can theoretically kite back and forth forever and never get hit (assuming you and your opponent have equal movement speed). Standing still and spamming chop with a spear, as expected, is a poor choice.
Dumb question… why do no attack animations ever happen when I click the left mouse button? Trying to use a long sword with a skill of 40. Really want to enjoy and play the game but makes it impossible to do when nothing even happens when trying to attack…
So a quick question, maybe I misunderstood but is it guaranteed you will always do the max damage with a fully charged weapon or does it just give you random number on the higher end? Fairly new to Morrowind with a Warhammer using orc and wondering if the bell hammer I just found is godly or just unpredictable with it's ridiculously large damage range
I always found Morrowind's combat system to hold more true to the reality of fighting. Every miss with an attack is your opponent shifting themselves in whatever way dodges the attack. From a simple shift of the hips to a full flip, use your imagination as to how they just doged your attack. In Oblivion and Skyrim your opponents all fight as if they are in the heaviest of armor(s), just letting you hit them without trying to shift their stance/body which, does not hold true to those who use lighter armor(s) or no armor. If I am wearing no armor, I am going to do everything in my power to keep my distance/avoid any strike against me and either try to punish my opponent(s) or just run away if I have no chance of winning.
When I tried to play this game years ago, the first enemy I met was a small worm like creature. It attacked me, and I couldn't stab him for some reason with my dagger. The creature slowly ate away my HP, one point at a time and killed me. I immediately deleted the game. If I couldn't kill a worm, I was not worthy.
Hmm in the beginning you say your skill with a weapon directly correlates with your damage and chance to hit but doesn't weapon skill only add to chance to hit not to damage?
What I don't like about Morrowind is that halberds have poor chop and slash damage - these weapons were designed to do exactly that, on top of being able to thrust. I would be okay if spears did more thrusting damage than halberds but in return halberds should have more flexibility. What I always wanted to do with halberds is to charge someone using a thrust attack, then run back using a slash attack, then thrust and slash repeatedly until my enemy is dead. Also the spear skill should have been renamed to polearms, because that's exactly what these weapons are. Another missed opportunity by Bethesda is that they didn't put one handed spears into the game, with the same attack animations as swords and axes but obviously the best damage would have been the thrust attack, with slash and chop depending on the type of spearhead used.
I seriously can't attack anyone in the game, I have an iron dagger and I tested it out on an NPC and it took no damage. I'm really struggling right now
And you sure you just weren't missing your attacks? Could be worth using console commands to buff your related weapon skill (short blade in this case for an iron dagger) by like 1,000 to see if somehow your game data got messed up
@@jasonvoorheesv1nce904 Have you tried attacking other creatures? Easy ones, harder ones, etc. If you're on console, you shouldn't have much to worry about as far as mods unintentionally interfering with your game. Could it just be that you're taking on a high level NPC using a dagger while you have very few points in short blade?
@@jasonvoorheesv1nce904 And those attacks didn't land either even though you've got sufficient short blade skill? I would maybe try all sorts of things. Trying each weapon type or starting a new character.
I use the Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul mod pack, but I don't recommend it. It's pretty out of date. Try looking into the Morrowind Graphics Guide instead, it's kind of similar
yeah, I guess you made that point. Deceptive isn't really the right word. Oh, do you have any idea why you start floating towards your enemy when you get hit while fleeing?
The only thing that really bothers me about this combat system is using bows and arrows, the players skill should complement whether or not they miss their shot or not, not by some random chance. If its off target, no damage at all, if it aims straight for the head and you see it going through the enemies head, that should be maximum damage, especially when it aint that easy to get a head shot anyway, especially in long distance.
Yeah it can certainly be annoying, but if you've played more stat focused games it's not all too far fetched of a concept. A lot of CRPGs, older MMOs, and some ARPGs (Path of Exile, I think) have hit chances and this is kind of just a first person version. Anyway, if you're on PC, you can just use console commands to set your marksmanship skill like 300 and you'll never miss a shot regardless of the enemy's strength unless you get massively debuffed somehow. Higher weapon skills only affect your chance-to-hit so you don't have to worry about your damage becoming super overpowered.
Yep. All bound weapons come enchanted with a 10 point fortify spell effect for their respective weapon skill. Not to mention they're all made of Daedric material, so even without enchants they'd still work against enemies who are immune to normal weapons.
Trying to make an unarmored hand to hand monk character. Find this video. Tells me to look at timestamps for anything specific. Tells me is it's hard for beginners, and shouldn't do it early game. ...WELP! Looks like my game is gonna be rough
It's definitely a fun challenge to start that way though! Be on the look out for paralyze spells and defensive spells. Once you get into the Tribunal expansion, you can get access to Fortify Skill spells and enchantments. Before harder fights (or during if you have the defense) you can use spells and enchantments to buff up your hand-to-hand. With enough buffs, you should be able to knockout anything with one punch. The downside is that it's a lot of preparation and even then that same amount of preparation would get you better returns with a regular weapon build.
Lyle Shnub Alrighty! Will do, already for my h2h to like lvl 80- something? And im still in balmora doing quests for the mage guild, the fighters guild was too hard lol So i was thinking about enchantments for stuff, Are there many "unarmored" class clothes i can wear? So far i only found shirt, pants, and shoes. And is there even a "hand to hand" enchantment?
Yeah, you can always wear regular clothes that don't count as armor. In addition to those three, there's gloves, robes, skirts, belts, and miscellaneous trinkets (two rings and an amulet). The thing is that you can wear armor on top of those clothes (save for the shoes and gloves) so by going unarmored you also miss out on equipment slots that could be used for enchanting. The "Fortify Skill" enchantment will let you access "Fortify Hand-to-Hand". When you go to apply the enchantment you'll be prompted to select which skill you want to fortify. This also means that buying any "Fortify Skill" spell will let you create enchantments/spells for any skill. So you only need to buy one once you get to the Tribunal expansion.
Lyle Shnub Oh shit! I totally forgot about jewelry. Glad to know you can wear more than one ring lol I guess i should just watch your enchantment video if i wanna learn about enchantment, huh? Thanks for all the information my dude! You're doing us newbies a huge favor lol
try this: setfight 100 Make sure you target the npc you want to affect once you open the console menu and before you enter the command. Hopefully this is what you were asking for. Much love
Well as someone playing through it myself. Its annoying that Im very physically connecting my weapon to the enemy, yet the game decides Im not landing. This is taking consideration the tips in this video. Its still annoying. Not only that but Speech is also annoying. While I get that theres a formula behind it, it still feels so out of my control. Same with lockpicking... Im glad that Oblivion has at least some balance between Luck and skill, even people complain about mini games. And mind you what veterans who explain this stuff fail to understand is that they have all the knowledge of what and where to get things so of course they know how to get around the things probably annoyed them too. Just be patient with New players trying to go through it blind while also trying to get at least a basic understanding of why everything is. And New players need to be patient too. All told though. Im still having a blast playing Morrowind.
Yeah, you can. For some reason my computer refused to play Morrowind, so I downloaded it on my phone. It's great, I'm having a lot of fun, though I'm absolutely not the best lol
I miss SPEARS ! Fucking Bethesda puts them in Morrowind and does not thave them in Oblivion or Skyrim. Whats a Argonian without a spear ? High Acrobatics skill lets you jump over people with super good range they cant get you lol
everyone's problem seems to be with not being able to hit anything but I've seen nothing about the enemies being so spongy that you have to spend several minutes just hacking away to kill a fucking cave dweller.
I always thought of Morrowind's combat to actually be kind of similar to tabletop games, though maybe moreso older RPGs with hit chances. Heck, I think even some newer games still have chance-to-hit stats. I'm thinking stuff like most CRPGs and I think even Path of Exile does. Anyway, if you want, you can always use console commands to just buff up your weapon or spell skill to 300. You'll never miss or fail an action, and as is shown in this video, it doesn't affect your damage
These videos are great for newbies like me. You're a lifesaver.

Morrowind is a lot more complicated when it comes to attacking and most other skills. It's very interesting
This is why I always say Morrowind is the best game of TES series.
Another great mechanic's video. Thank you for showcasing it like this
Started Morrowind for the first time last year. Must say it’s a breath of fresh air, and these guides of yours made understanding the game more feasible. Many thanks, sir!
Did not know about having to wind up a weapon swing! Knowing this ill be much more effective with my 2hand sword, King's Oath
Glad to have helped! It's definitely peculiar being as it works so differently from how we're used to damage ranges functioning
Can’t thank you enough for all these videos. Probably the best videos of this kind I’ve ever seen for any game.
Dude, you're awesome!
Thanks so much for the kind words!
I finally rest and watch the sun rise on a grateful universe
Blinding enchantments enhance hit chance, thats incredible! Gotta love Bethesda
Haha I never questioned any of this stuff back in the day.. I totally forgot it was like this
I recently had the bright idea that I would do a Khajit build and try to beat the main quest and others with hand to hand without ever using a weapon and avoiding using armor and wanted to check what the actual damage formulas were to see if maybe I had dug myself too deep a hole
"Derp."
Archaic, and yet suitable for such a game.
So, don't let that happen to you or because of graphics because Morrowind is one of the greatest RPG of all time
Thank you oh holy one
thanks for the video
gabe 234 Always happy to help. Thanks for the kind words!
Step 1: Steal complete sets of ebony equipment in the vaults in Vivec
Step 2: Profit
Morrowind Protip: Dance back and forth while swinging a long blade at enemies and they'll almost never hit you.
until you run out of stamina. then you wont hit anything
And then Moonwalk on their corpse
"Always use best attack" OMG best option ever! lol
the second formula for knockdown is so archaic.
agility * 0.5 + 50 produces the same result as: (agility * 50) * 0.01 + 50
3:58 "lacking important information"
Are you SERIOUS? A BETHESDA game...with tooltips that are incomplete or inaccurate?
Come on. That's crazy talk.
I'm going back to Skyrim. You know, the game where Magic Absorption is literally described 100% opposite of how it really works.
Great video, way to explore those niche needs. This helped!
Ahhhhh, thank you.
So helpful
goddamn i wish running didnt drain fatigue
Weapon skill does not effect damage done. Only chance to hit. @ 1:04
True there
Silent blade cuts best
At least a slimy pest
If you can't hit with a daedric dagger
Better you run away fast
Imagine if morrowind wasn't a diceroll game and all hits and spells would be casted 100% of the time people would be crying and saying it's harder than all the darksouls games combined
Uhmmm I can't attack at all... I really need some help how do you fix it???
6 months late but you must enter "combat stance" or "magic stance"
basicaly raising your arms to enable attacks
I went through the entire main quest without realizing the damage range was from holding down the attack button, and wasn't just random.
damn howd you find all this fam thanks !
ebony staves are ridiculous.
So does using the thrust not increase weapon range? I always though it did
What was the spoiler that you mentioned in hand to hand ?
Does this mean that drain fatigue ench on a weapon can increase chance to knock down?
Agreed it would feel funner and more unique
Dumb question… why do no attack animations ever happen when I click the left mouse button? Trying to use a long sword with a skill of 40. Really want to enjoy and play the game but makes it impossible to do when nothing even happens when trying to attack…
How to do the bound weapons work with this info?
Your videos of great! That's a subscribe from me, dawg.
When I tried to play this game years ago, the first enemy I met was a small worm like creature. It attacked me, and I couldn't stab him for some reason with my dagger. The creature slowly ate away my HP, one point at a time and killed me. I immediately deleted the game. If I couldn't kill a worm, I was not worthy.
lol same
If I have 100 strength will my weapon break in one hit?
I find Morrowind combat easier than Skyrim's, and that's not sarcasm.
You have an orcs name😃. Also great vidéo series.
I seriously can't attack anyone in the game, I have an iron dagger and I tested it out on an NPC and it took no damage. I'm really struggling right now
And you sure you just weren't missing your attacks? Could be worth using console commands to buff your related weapon skill (short blade in this case for an iron dagger) by like 1,000 to see if somehow your game data got messed up
@@LyleShnub my hits are directly pointed at them but still don't cause damage and I'm on a console, not on PC
@@LyleShnub I did attack other creatures, all were low level
@@jasonvoorheesv1nce904 And those attacks didn't land either even though you've got sufficient short blade skill?
I would maybe try all sorts of things. Trying each weapon type or starting a new character.
what about hand to hand
What mods for graphics and textures is he using?
I use the Morrowind Graphics and Sound Overhaul mod pack, but I don't recommend it. It's pretty out of date. Try looking into the Morrowind Graphics Guide instead, it's kind of similar
Lyle Shnub thanks for the reply!
what's up with the hit detection? You clearly hit the air but somehow still damage the poor test subject
Yeah, that was the point I was trying to make there, that the reach of melee weapons can be pretty deceptive.
yeah, I guess you made that point.
I disagree, I think it should be random chance, that is the type of RPG Morrowind is.
Are bound weapons considered enchanted?
Yep. All bound weapons come enchanted with a 10 point fortify spell effect for their respective weapon skill. Not to mention they're all made of Daedric material, so even without enchants they'd still work against enemies who are immune to normal weapons.
I would be fine with the 0.1 % hit rate if I dont get attacked by 50 fucking cliff racers Per minute.
Lyle Shnub
Alrighty! Will do, already for my h2h to like lvl 80- something? And im still in balmora doing quests for the mage guild, the fighters guild was too hard lol
So i was thinking about enchantments for stuff,
Are there many "unarmored" class clothes i can wear?
Lyle Shnub
Oh shit! I totally forgot about jewelry.
Glad to know you can wear more than one ring lol
I guess i should just watch your enchantment video if i wanna learn about enchantment, huh?
Thanks for all the information my dude!
You're doing us newbies a huge favor lol
Thanks for the kind words! I'm happy that so many people have gotten value from these videos
Me smarter now. Me thank.
hi from ecuador i need in console a comand for atack me npcs only in fores or all game thx!! no mod sorry for my english

Make sure you target the npc you want to affect once you open the console menu and before you enter the command. Hopefully this is what you were asking for. Much love
ok!! thx...
ok thx
thx
Honestly I just made a khajiit monk and beat the ever living shit out of everything I came across with my bare hands
Heuheuheu baby shnub
Bruh this is a much more thought combat system than skyrim. What the fuck happend?
Just saying. You can play Morrowind on android. Ask me for the easy tutorial
Yeah, you can. For some reason my computer refused to play Morrowind, so I downloaded it on my phone. It's great, I'm having a lot of fun, though I'm absolutely not the best lol
@@naarelservs9713 it is great. Check out the orc house in caldera for the 2nd best trader (skamp).
Ik i am late, but the draw distance seems to be less than in pc
@@devshah2939 you should have more than on pc. Modding is also fully supported.
I am playing right now
I miss SPEARS !
Why am I such a nerd
This game does have pretty shit combat mechanics
Disagree it has old rpg combat mechanics
I'm uninstalling this shit game right now. Why hide hours of content behind the worst combat system ever? I'm going back to tabletop.
@@LyleShnub Wow, what a helpful guy. Thanks, bruv, I'm definitely gonna try that when I reinstall Morrowind in like... two years.
