This is the rarest video I have seen in a long time....I just ran across this and I thought I had all the old S&G video and this is tyhe only performance I have never seen..and it's a song i really weanted..thank you so much :)
There's something so ironic about this song. They may be old friends, but can you see how incredibly UNCOMFORTABLE they look!?!? Perhaps it's the starchy tuxes or the non-folky neon lights in the background. No...it's much deeper then that. It's nothing that can be touched or seen. 35 years later..."how terribly strange to be 70."
2dannyc89. A partial link to a newer far less formal version of Old Friends / Bookends. I find this version much better concidering the on again, off again, long time strained friendship between Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon. It looks like an impromptu performance recorded in a dressing room yet still contains the precision of perfect harmony and melody that I have always loved about their music. A true life version of their own song. It wasn't a park bench. Was a couch, or perhaps the foot of a bed. Again, very informal yet beautiful.
Artie always adjusts the mic. Tux prevented sleeve roll up. Most uncomfortable to perform in especially sitting down. Nostalgic and sad yearning for years gone past ....
I love you Art
I love you Art Garfunkel.
This song touches my soul deeply for so many reasons...esp the older I become....
I have loved this song from back in the day. Simon and Garfunkel sang a song...a poem..a truth that will be always.
Incredibly sad song. But very beautiful.
How strange to be 70 .now their both in their late 70s. A treffic album.
time it was and what a time it was,a time of innocence,a time of confidences
Perfection.
That song means so much to me as I am now a 67 year old "Old Friend"
The greatest not unsung heroes.
a lovely song,touching my heart
Despite all that, the music is indescribably sweet.
The music is describably subtle, indelibe and touching!

Thanks for posting this excellent performance of one of their classic songs, it brings back some good memories.

1:58 is where it switches from "Old Friends" to "Bookends."
Has anyone got any more from this 1977 Thames TV show? I would be interested in seeing both Procol Harum and Julie Covington.
So sad that they ended up not as friends but enemies 😢
