  • Lagaan (2001) was not only nominated for Oscar, it also won 8 National Awards & 8 Filmfare Awards.
To capture the cross-cultural ethos of Lagaan, Rahman distilled a heady concoction of several music styles and genres including Indian Classical, Western Classical, Indian Folk and sounds of rural India.
On one hand, the film and its soundtrack were rated ‘Magnum opus’ commercially; on the other, it also received critical acclaim, a rare treat for any film.
Ashutosh Gowariker recalls when the songs brought tears of joy, and how the soundtrack by Rahman put the film on the right track.

I finally found someone who can put into words on what I was trying to tell for so long. " Rahman is a person who has vast amount of knowledge and application". There are so many amazing music directors who are arguably good or better than Rahman but no one connected with such a wide range of audiences.
music is such a subjective art form it's hard to make all people happy.when you do intellectual task it is easy to connect with larger audience For eg a good thriller will work in small town like madurai or in LA. But a led Zeppelin can't connect to guy from rural India. Because it's an emotional and very subjective.
But Rahman has reached the maximum number of Indian audience and an Indian who gathered major fan base among Hollywood cine freaks. Which means despite his less familiarity in the rest of the world he could be one of the artist who reached most people in the world.

led Zeppelin cannot connect with ppl who don't listen to western music or understand English. Like ARR cannot connect with most of the western countries like led Zeppelin does. led Zeppelin do have a good following from India. A good thriller movie like Drishyam works everywhere.

What you said is somewhat agreeable but Mr. Ibrahim could you mention at least a few of those so many music directors better than Rahman? I didn’t get this point and how O2India pinned this comment for this one remark when they are actually celebrating the genius of Mr. Rahman! In other words, you are trying to say Rahman is pure rhythm and sound that can connect to audiences from all over the globe and India which was the only best thing he managed than any other damn good composer whereas his actual soulful melodies and brilliant game-changer compositions were not that good to be liked by everyone or not better than many of those better music directors??

Lagaan is one of the iconic films in the history of Hindi cinema. The theme is a heady mix of cricket and nationalism, which was tried for the first time and with resounding success. Music of AR Rahman contributed a lot towards creating right mood and ambience for the storyline. More particularly, the Bhajan composed for the film has by now acquired an identity of its own- quite independent of its existence in the film.

    • @O2india

Best thing to me about Rahman's music is that its freshness never goes. Listen to his 90's or 2000's songs, they are still so crystal clear and so innovative & at the same time so so melodious. Rahman's vast musical knowledge and its application as Ashu aptly said is beyond anybody else. Rahman is a mega milky way in the musical universe.

I feel bad I didn’t explore this album being a Rahman die-hard fan. I will sure listen to this, thanks for mentioning it. Off late, I didn’t quite listen to ARRs work, so missed some of the gems like these as ‘am still too full with what magic he created back in the 90s and up to the oscars. Also, there are many films worth mentioning abt ARR Bgms but none of them were covered so far properly in this channel including the one episode dedicated for BGMs in this series. His first film Roja is quite an epic even with regard to BGM scores, there are plenty and fill you with such amazing wonder and soulful delight that will transport you to some seventh heaven or so! God, we can’t stop loving him even today for every bit he did in that movie’s score!!

I heard from somewhere that for Lagaan, ar rahman didn't use any electrical instruments souds. Only Instruments which are traditionally used, sounded and gives music for old Indian village style.
At the same time adding elements of British style.
I can say a British music director cannot give both touch for the movie but for Ar Rahman, he made it possible.
Same for warriors of heaven and earth with Chinese music touch.
This is incredible. I don't require to have another play list for different genere or different country style.
I just need to add up Ar Rahman songs to my existing playlist.
O2INDIA, thanks for bringing memories of Lagaan to 2022. This is an incredible movie and music.

There are several genius composers in India but only a few could penetrate the lengths and breadths of the country with music like Rahman did, especially composers from the southern states. And he is also amongst a very few composers/musicians who created a global impact by winning Oscars, Grammy, Golden Globe awards, meaning he could attract audiences from other nationalities and cultures. This is a Himalayan task by any count but Rahman remains humble and grounded at all times, a quality other achievers could learn from. He is the pride of India and a real master of Music. Infact I would have enjoyed them for a longer duration than they are ! Take it Lagaan / Swades / Jodhaa Akbar.... Tabiyat se banata hain banda ! His story taking / production authenticity in terms of costumes locations and equipment is SPOT ON. And his detailing of the songs and capturing correct sound for his movie is worth all the efforts. I hope Ashutosh and ARR can work again on another cult classic soon !

In terms of background score what Rahman contributed to Lagaan, was a phenomenon on the Indian movie screen. Unlike any other movie, he has created several unique tunes specific to characters. The symphony like musical arrangement is almost alien to Indian cinema till Lagaan. The range of instruments has used gave a transcendental feeling to the audience. Right from the title card till the end credits, the music we hear in the entire movie is a well orchestrated wonder. Unfortunately the OSTs never came out officially like the songs. He actually gave the film its soul and life. Musical Wizard!!!

Ohh, what could have been a great episode about a landmark Oscar range film and music just got so marred with too many interludes of cover versions. And come on O2 India, you hardly covered the gem of Lagan’s music to even move to Swades in the next episode. I loved every bit of the interview but this time there were too many songs and the Dubai singer was really getting on our nerves. We also need you to do better research as the aalaap towards the near end of the episode sung by the Dubai team was not from Lagaan. It’s from the second interlude of a song from Doli Saja ke Rakhna which was at least not directed by Ashutosh.
Also, many ppl conveniently talk only about songs and skip the biggest gem of this entire album, the Waltz of Romance, an instrumental (also used in the court room Britishers dance sequence in the film). I don’t know why but at least when Indian movies are going international, there needs to be a special mention about instrumentals like these which are on the scale of Bombay theme music. Rahman once again unleashed such genius that proves time and again why he’s such an internationally acclaimed composer. In this particular piece, he sounds as brilliant as the combined genius of Beethoven and Mozart. Had this been covered in your interview, it could have been a true fitting tribute to Rahman’s scintillating work for this movie and undoubtedly, would have delighted many of us, universal music lovers of ARR!

    • @O2india
      @O2india  2 роки тому

Dear Mr. Srinivas. Thank you very much for your feedback. We agree with you, every film, each song and BGM of those films can be discussed at length bcause Mr. Rahman's body of work is very strong and if we may say, unparalleled. When we use Cover Songs, allow us to mention, we try and use only those versions that have either stayed true to the original or given a new interpretation. Many of the cover artists - featured on Rahman Music Sheets, have also sung original compositions for Mr. Rahman. We use Covers... to show the impact of Mr. Rahman's music on individuals, irrespective of their age, gender or location. His music remains a thread that connects peopel to their roots... Like the Dubai Team you mentioned. We really appreciate your views and perspective. Besides presenting in-depth content, we want this platform to evolve where all of us can express and exchange our views. Warm Regards.

Dear@@O2india, I personally don't have much issue with the cover songs or you promoting the artistes also. Because many of them are usually good. I sometimes mention them disturbing only for two reasons: 1. If their length exceeds the actual interview(the case in point here in ep. 21) or 2. If some of the singers seem like a misfit. Beyond this, I'm absolutely fine with singers coz we need ARR music to be heard in some or other way. It could be better if there were originals being played if not for the copyright issues.
Also, I felt the theme music should have been covered as it deserves a special mention, in my opinion. These theme music 🎵 songs are what separate him from regular commercial music directors easily and earned him that internation repute, Mozart of Madras!

The intermediate singers are really irritating... particularly the face expression... even the original composer wouldn't have expressed this much....it would be best if you avoid such interludes... better you put the real song visuals....

I think you should do away with the covers .. they are distracting since none of the covers are able to emulate the original emotion of the song ... This is about Rahman and the interviewee and their conceptualization... The covers are good on theirbown but an overkill in the context

Dear Divya. We appreciate your views and perspective. Allow us to mention that we use cover to highlight that fact that Mr. Rahman's music impacts artists across the globe irrespective of age and gender. Cover are interpreations, they are anot supposed to sound like original. Infcat they may inspre you to visit the originals once again. We have been careful in selecting cover artists too. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. we will look forward to hear from you again. Hope you have subscribed to the channel. Please share it with your family, friends and groups. Regards.
