  • I took Mai'a Moku out for it's first test sail with the 89sqf Lugsail from Really Simple Sails. I sailed across to Hungry Beach from Patonga on Sydney's Hawkesbury River.
    Here's a video of the rigging setup before the first sail...

    Hey all, thanks for watching. It's winter here in Australia so now I'm building a stand up paddleboard while I wait for warmer weather... ua-cam.com/video/hPWi1gfqZKI/v-deo.html

    Thank you for sharing,
    I grew up on those waters and moved to Qld ages ago. Broken bay and the hawskbury river is the only water way I miss a lot, there is nothing like that water way up here, awesome work on your boat build too, yeeeeeew

      Thanks mate! The plan is to go find some secret beaches and reefs around the Torres Strait sometime next year.

    Going to start my wa’apa build soon. Do you think that you could camp out of yours?

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  Рік тому +1

      I tried lying down in the hull to see if it would fit camping, I could fit but i wouldn’t want to sleep there all night! Best to camp ashore I reckon.

      @@Aaron.deRuiter Right on! Thanks for the reply, your videos are a big inspiration regarding the Wa’apa.
      Yeah, I’m planning to do coastal cruising/camping out of a 16’ Wa’apa. Minimal gear like backpacking. As soon as I get the current project out of the shop, I’m ordering plywood. Stoked!

    Those shorts tho...
    Also, do you know the weight limit on these? Could you carry enough camping gear for a couple of weeks on a trampoline?

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  5 років тому +2

      They’re a touch bright I know...
      I built the boat for overnight camping and sailing trips. I took it out with my dad a couple of weeks back. Total crew weight would have been 170kg, which it handled no worries. Check out the video of it... ua-cam.com/video/v6TvDGo_oww/v-deo.html

    Are your iakos hollow or solid? Nice clean looking job on the build!

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  5 років тому

      Thanks Scott! The iakos are hollow. They are 19mm pine on the top and bottom with 3mm plywood sides. I rounded all corners with a 12mm roundover router bit which gave it a really nice even finish.

    • @scottsouder6450
      @scottsouder6450 5 років тому +1

      Nice, I was thinking of hollow ones with a Tamanu

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  5 років тому

      If I was able to put the Tamanu on top of my car I would build one too. The extra length would come in handy.

    Aaron, what is the maximum achievable speed?

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  5 років тому +1

      In the plans the designer estimates it can up to 11 mph, which is around 9.6 knots. My gps has the boat recorded at 9.4 knots.

    @1967250s 5 років тому +1

    Nice. What is the weight?

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  5 років тому +1

      The vaka (main hull) weighs 28kg, the amas (outriggers) weigh around 6kg each. All up sailing weight with mast, sail, rudder, leeboard and cross beams is around 60kg. Here's the boat with two crew on board, probably around 85kg each. ua-cam.com/video/v6TvDGo_oww/v-deo.html

    Hi mate, how are you finding transporting your boat by car? Easy enough?

    • @Aaron.deRuiter
      @Aaron.deRuiter  3 роки тому +1

      Hi mate, to put all the boat parts on the car, unload it on the beach and assemble it took about 1hr 30 mins which was too long for me. I ended up buying a boat that stays on a mooring on the water.
