weirdly enough, i always loved the story? the idea of a nuclear catastrophe just seconds behind you really gave the game the little edge thats kept it in my mind since.. well, 1997
That solar system business is fantastic! I played the hell out of BC way back when (full platinum, "You Can Stop Now", took me forever). Nineteen years later and I'm still learning new things about it.
In all the time since its release, I don't think I've seen any game handle progression and secrets in a more satisfying way. Multiple hidden areas in so many maps, secret level on top of secret level, there was just so much of it, all revealed at the right pace and all serving as a genuine reward for exploration. I got a deeper sense of accomplishment from completing all the medal challenges than from any other game that comes to mind.
The team did an amazing job with Blast Corps, and it puts a big, stupid smile on my face to see they look back on it fondly after all these years.
That Rare employee wasn't lying, Graeme had hit an absolute banger with Simian Acres!
"That Rare employee" was the great Robin Beanland, who scored arguably the best soundtrack on the N64 with Jet Force Gemini.
I still hear that and think "It's Bluegrass-techno. And it works."

Loved the game back in the day. Poured 200 hours into all the platinum medals. Wouldn't do it again but I had a great time with Blast Corps. Thanks Rare.
I busted my ass to get all of the platinum medals as well. And after you do it, all it does is (SPOILER) it gives you a message that says 'You can stop now'. Talk about anticlimactic...
This game was actually really special and deserved more recognition. The soundtrack was also outstanding.
Nah, the real reason the mech was designed to be piloted from the crotch was so we could chuckle every time we decided to "get to the cockpit."

One of the greatest Games ever made. I achived all platin medals back in the days. i played the hell out of that game. it is still today in my collection. we need a HD remake here... or a complete reboot with the newest frostbite engine

The Rare Replay version is crystal clear. I was absolutely blown away of how clear it was. In the original, there was actually a level that I couldn't 100% because a hidden pathway was camoflagued by the fuzziness

5:12 I knew that because one of the levels happened to be Sao Paulo race track of the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Epic game, i still remember borrowing it in like 1998 or 1999 and devouring it.
Japanese trivia: Japanese version of the game was called Blastdozer, possibly because corps was not easy to pronounce nor did it sound snappy in Japanese phonology. Any graphic asset that has BC has been replaced with BD (e.g. medal, and the back of Backlash). And it’s got a better logo, and I would say better boxart. The nuclear thing was changed with highly explosive chemical for the obvious reason, but RDU is still called RDU.
The groin cabin finally did see it's day in full view of the public when Kojima did Zone of Enders.

I rented tbis game a few times in the 90s and loved it so much. Happy to be playing it again now and unsurprisingly its hust as fun now as it was then.
I was searching for this game for years. Looks so different from when I was a child! I thought the robot looked so futuristic lol

I still have this game and have not finished it.
While I love the Simian Acres music, I can't help but feel it was a bit odd to reuse the boss music from Donkey Kong Land. Must've been Graeme's favourite track for him to reuse it in such a wildly different game.

I love that number 1, is that Blast Corps has no story. I think everyone knows that. And yet I still return to this game every couple of years to try to remember what the story was.

The game that Lorraine Chase played on GamesMaster was The Adventures of Yogi Bear (SNES). It was the Christmas special episode from 1993.

the fear and unsettling of the truck crashing with bombs if you dont destroy on time was scary this game was difficult but fun. nostalgiaaa

That explains why the story never made sense.
I would think that in this scenario, Blast Corps would deploy the J Bomb for every carrier level, with the thunderfist and a fast car as backup. They also wouldn't be wasting time doing races and destroying floating spheres inside volcano's.
At the very least you would get a handwave explanation for why you get stuck with THE FREAKING BACKLASH for half of the levels!

This was one of the best games the N64 had to offer, it was exhilarating to play. It vaguely reminds me of Risk of Rain in the type of fun it induced.

blast corps is a game that if they create a new one, even if is bad done, still would be awesome, the idea and the gameplay goal was so well idealized that even if someone recreate the game generic as f with unreal engine, still would be awesome

also, the groin cockpit. not one mention of the Turn A gundam? it even had the same entry system, the cockpit would drop down to the ground, then pull the pilot up. the entire crotch could even launch off and turn into an aircraft...

I never understood this game when I was a kid. And there was no Spanish version. I rented it like twice but I gave up, I was always stuck in the first level, never got what I was supposed to do
