  • TUBA ALERT! Most recorded versions of this Henry Mancini classic hand the melody to flutes and piccolos. But baby elephants don't piccolo, they tuba. (This from actual personal experience.) So the heavy melodic lifting in this arrangement goes there.
The song was featured in the 1962 latter-day John Wayne "adventure romance comedy" Hatari, a film from which its theme song is the only thing worth remembering.
The song won Mancini a 1963 Grammy for best instrumental song. A 1962 recording by Lawrence Welk (!) reached No. 48 on Billboard's Hot 100. It was as hot as Welk ever got.
Score and parts are available for a modest price at halleonard.com. Search on my name (Will Corbin) for the entire collection.
