  • 1971's big hit "Take Me Home" (or "Country Roads," either one works) finds its roots on a "country" road in Gaithersberg, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. The idea came from Taffy Nivert and her husband, Bill Danoff. They co-wrote it with John Denver in one long night in Washington, where Denver was performing at a not-exactly-country club in hip (and, at that time, hippie) Georgetown. And Denver wasn't exactly a good ol' boy either; he was an Air Force brat. None of which takes away from the song, but it does seem to have become a "country" standard under false colors.
