Silverton will be a return spot for us forever. Been twice so far. Fabulous boondocking and world class off-roading. There are a reasonable number of trails that your van could do. We've done much in a crew cab truck. Sold our trailer and moved to a Class A so we could tow a Jeep to the Silverton area. Enjoyed it THAT much!
We really loved that SW corner of Colorado, but honestly, I can't think of a part of Colorado we didn't love. Red Mountain Pass between Silverton and Ouray was our favorite part of the Million Dollar Highway drive. We have always been into off-roading but admittedly take it pretty easy on the van since without it we can't tow our home. We used to have an '83 Jeep CJ-7 which we sold when we hit the road and we still have a 4x4 lifted Tacoma that family keeps for us while we're traveling. We completely understand your decision to move from a travel trailer to a Class A so you can tow the Jeep... while we love our set-up, we wish there were a way to have the Tacoma there too. Have you done Black Bear Pass? We've watched videos of that trail, looks pretty intense!!
How true...there weren't many parts that weren't incredible. We've stayed in Silverton twice now for a total of about 2-3 weeks. It is central to a large portion of SW Colorado. With 100's of miles of trails, you can make off-road day trips that end up almost anywhere from Durango to Ourey, to Telluride to Lake City. We've done a dozen or more of them, but never Black Bear. Like you, our truck was also our primary (get us home) vehicle. We relied on local friends to counsel us on what we should get on and what we shouldn't. We've done Imogene Pass, Corscrew Gulch, Engineers Pass, Last Dollar, Yankee Boy Basin, Ophir Pass, Hurricane Pass, Clear Lake...and others that I can't remember now. For instance, when you guys took 550 and looped back around through Telluride towards Cortez, you might have tried Last Dollar. It is not taxing at all and connects from North of Ourey to Telluride...then Ophir Pass from Telluride to Silverton. That's a long day, but beautiful and you won't/shouldn't break anything. We've got a few episodes of Silverton coming up in the next month. This was the stay that convinced us we will spend many entire summers there. We camped on Federal land and made the best of friends that have been going for decades. As most fulltimers say, making friends on the road is the best part. It certainly has been for us. I'm no expert on the above, but learning from some experts.
It's a top 2 drive for me, only surpassed by the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Colorado is also one of my favorites, cannot wait to return.

Ha! We weren't towing the Million Dollar Highway, we had been properly forewarned against that foolishness! People do it, but with our 30' it would be sketchy to say the least! Colorado is amazing, be sure to give yourself plenty of time once you get here. And yes, that look we were getting certainly hurried our meal along... Spoiled brat!

That pitiful look on Madley's face while outside the restaurant killed me! You could tell by her expression that she was so dumbfounded to be stuck outside. Brittany's can be such drama queens! Loved the scenery & the quaint mountain towns!
She was absolutely pathetic! She stood right in the doorway to the restaurant blocking everyone's path until I shortened her leash. Then she stared accussingly at me bewildered by the injustice of being left on the street. Lol yeah, she's a drama queen alright 😂
All the fires this year are heartbreaking. We consider ourselves fortunate to have been able to see the areas around that Million Dollar Drive, as well as Glacier Nat'l Park before the fires started this year. Very sad indeed, so much beauty burned. Thank you for watching and commenting 🙂
Not really, it was by Hermosa west of 550 and nowhere near Telluride or Ouray. The drive is basically as it always has been. Interesting that my wife was driving from Ouray to pick me up at Durango airport just after the fire started and right when they closed 550 - she got turned back near Purgatory leaving me with no ride to Ouray LOL.
Well, we made a loop of it - Durango > Silverton > Ouray > Telluride > Cortez > Durango. It's about 250 miles - if you drive it without stopping it's around 5.5 hrs, but of course, we stopped in all the little towns along the way to explore. It was a long day, we started mid-morning and didn't get back until 8 or so. If you don't want to go that far, you could just go to Silverton and Ouray and turn back, but by the time you make it to Telluride, you may as well just keep going forward because you're over halfway around the circle by that point. If you choose to not do the entire loop I would suggest going as far as Ouray as the drive between Silverton and Ouray (Red Mountain Pass) was the most spectacular, in my opinion. I lived in Phoenix for 15 years. I drove through the mountains in Arizona. Do it now because I'm 62 and I'm not brave enough anymore lol.

Sad to say that the 416 fire this year burnt most of this area! Pretty sad what happened to the pass and the area around Telluride ouray and Durango
