  • Gamarjoba! I'm excited to announce the first of many episodes on Georgian Music. This time we have musicologist and friend John Graham giving you a basic introduction to the music. John is a specialist in Georgian liturgical chants but knows Georgian music deeply. John will return in the future. And over time I will also have others discussing the music and the musicians themselves.
John also wanted you to know these links to the three songs he mentioned: The three songs that I mentioned in our little interview are:
Shen khar venakhi. See musical variants here on linked video playlists: www.johngrahamtours.com/shen-khar-venakhi-1 www.johngrahamtours.com/shen-khar-venakhi-2 www.johngrahamtours.com/shen-khar-venakhi-3

Indeed. It is a great place to spend time. There are aspects that drive one a little mad, but more in a humorous way. And I am settling in more. I'll soon be doing a video on my process for finding a better place to live. Stay tuned. Meanwhile check out some of my other videos. And look for my playlist here on music and dance, which includes videos from my other channel.

Caucasian musicology is just delightful. You can track certain motifs along geographic patterns, notice how instrumental techniques mirror vocal techniques and phonemes, etc. Each pocket community has its own flavor and depth, and each is equally enriching. Thanks for the great video!

Man, I am loving the bro priest, at 10:32. I guess, the kisses are for quality. That leaves me wondering about how many John has gotten for his self proclaimed amateur efforts?
PS: Mr. Byrne, anytime line on the second part of the why, I moved to Tbilisi video?

I hope within the next week. Thanks for the comment. Glad you found the Music video. John might be an amateur, but he does have a doctorate in Georgian liturgical music. georgian men often greet friends with kisses. I am no stranger to this custom. By the way I have another channel called Gravity From Above, which has many videos I've made of Georgian music and dance.

Interesting. I heard similarities with old folk songs, Christian chants, medieval music and music I might hear in neighbourhoods with many immigrants.

Great video. I’ve always enjoyed music with a “foreign“ sound to it. I also love the concepts of, and just listening to music with obvious droning, dissonance, and unusual harmonies. The three part harmony was interesting too. Good stuff.
