    Wee, doggies~~I love this QOTD:
I buy sodium bicarbonate in bulk~~50# bag of generic baking soda, and I store it in a 5 gallon bucket. I fill a quart jar for my kitchen for cooking, sometimes I put it in an old Parmesan shaker container and use it for scrubbing my bathrooms. When making homemade laundry powder, I bake 9x13 casserole dishes of it (400 degrees F, for an hour or so) to transform it to sodium carbonate~~washing soda. (I also make my own laundry bar soap with coconut oil as the fat and use that in place of Fels Naptha or Zote.) In this way, a cheaper bulk of baking soda has many uses.
We like the Classico brand pasta sauces. I buy them on sale, then reuse the jars for holding spices and herbs, tinctures, etc. The larger sized ones can even be used for canning as the flats and rings (regular size) fit them.
We keep chickens and I wash eggs when they are dirty. I cut up old stained t shirts, etc. and keep a cookie jar of them beside my sink to use for egg cleaning, then I throw them away. I get a lot of small rags from a t shirt.
I buy cheap shampoo, bubble bath, etc. (Whatever is the cheapest at the time) for re-filling hand soap containers (if you do the foaming soap refills, you get even more for your money...). When the bottles are empty, I place them in the kitchen sink when I'm running dish water and direct the stream of hot water into the bottle, so that it fills and overflows. I get a lot of extra soap from an "empty" bottle. Then I toss the bottle.
I save dryer lint and TP/ paper towel cardboard rolls. I fill them with lint and make fire starters for our winter wood stove fires. You can also pour melted wax ( saved from the ends of candles, of course...).
I save the containers from cool whip, sour cream, cottage cheese, etc. for sending leftover home with people. I don't lose tupperware and they don't have to return a container.
I realize some of these are a bit off topic, but in the same neighborhood, lol... I save lotion bottles (I have extremely dry skin.) and refill from a gallon size lotion that I buy in bulk.
Once, my husband was re-fashioning my Mom's old dining room hutch~~into a kitchen island for me. We didn't know what to use for a surface for prepping food, cutting, etc. without spending a lot on a piece of butcher block or counter top. I bought 2 wooden pie boards and he attached them both to the top for a food prep surface. I've gotten lots of compliments on it!
I re-use pretzel/chip/bar mix containers (like the UTZ brand containers...) for storing large amounts of herbs, flour, sugar, etc.
We re-purposed an old waterbed frame into a book shelf. We stood it up, added shelves (which had been given to us when a store closed), painted it, and stood against the wall, anchoring it for safety (it's heavy!)
We repurposed the headboard (it has large divided sections and a top piece) to sit on the floor next to a doorway and hold boots, gloves, etc.
There are many more, but there's a good sampling. I absolutely love repurposing and upcycling!

I'm going to try the baking doda hack for making washing soda. I'd love to know how to use coconut oil in place of fels-naphtha if you coukd explain it. Anything to cut down on special ingredients just makes sense.

Great video Emmy, and what great deals you got.
What I use in a different manner in which it was intended.
    1. Dawn dish soap. I use it for dishes yes but I also mix it with vinegar and water(equal parts) and use it to kill fleas. Both in the yard and on our dogs.
    2. Dryer sheets. After I use them for my clothes, I use them on my Swiffer, instead of buying the actual Swiffer sheets.
    3. Pool noodles. I don't use them in our pool. Instead I cut them down to fit into the very back of a tall kitchen cabinet. Because I am kinda short, every time I reach for something on the top shelf, I end up pushing it further away and out of my reach. The pool noodles take up the space which prevents the cans or boxes from being pushed back. This allows me to be able to reach and grab what is up there.
Other things I use pool noodles for are, to on top of my scream door to help keep bugs out. And in the back of drawers to keep silverware baskets from sliding around.
There really are lots of uses for pool noodles.
    4. curtain tension rods. Yes I use them for curtains but I also use them to create a shelf.
By putting four of them close together and tightening them between two cabinets it allowed me to create a shelf above my kitchen sink.
    5. Downy fabric sheets are not good for just laundry but they are excellent for getting baked on and I mean really burnt on pots and pans clean. Just lay one flat in the burnt pan, add water and a drop of dawn dish soap and let set for awhile. The burnt on stuff will slide off. Works great on stove tops too. I usually let it set overnight.
    6. Kitty litter can help get more traction under a tire if stuck in a slippery hole.
    7. I use toothpaste for cleaning jewelry.
    8. I use toothpicks for cleaning out the holes in a salt shaker or other spice bottle when they get clogged.
    9. I use saltine crackers or rice to absorb moisture inside salt shaker's and other spices.
    10. I will buy candy canes on clearance after Christmas. I then grind them up and put in a canister so that I can add the ground up peppermint powder into hot tea or hot cocoa. I do this instead of buying the peppermint syrup.
    11. I've used rope to make handles for a tray or dresser instead of metal knobs. The rope gives it a country look.
    12. I use rubber dish washing gloves to help me open up tight jar lids.
    13. I know this one will seem weird but a toilet bowl brush makes a great back scratcher. Make sure you use a brand new one and only use it as a back scratcher and don't accidentally use it to clean the toilet.
These are a few of the things I use in different ways.

One of the most-often-used substitutions I can think of for me is a buttermilk hack for baking. I never buy buttermilk but when a recipe calls for some, I measure out just shy of the amount needed in regular milk then add a splash of red cider vinegar. Let sit for 5 mins. or so. The vinegar slightly curdles the milk and adds a tang. Proceed with the recipe. I have used this for pancakes, muffins, banana bread, cakes, etc. I learned this years ago from The Tightwad Gazette newsletters/books, among many other frugal tips.

    Happy Father's Day to Paul.
Take a silicone muffin pan and use to freeze things like eggs that are going to expire. Crack one egg into a muffin cup, freeze, remove when solid and freeze in a bag when needed for baking. Can be used for other things as well.
My other one is 2 round cake pans and a bag of marbles. Put the marbles in the bottom of 1 cake pan, put the other cake pan on top and presto.....instant lazy Susan! Great for the camper and also works in the fridge.

We're going through winter at the moment in Australia. This means covid season and mask wearing. I have trouble with homemade masks and find breathing difficult, so I use the disposable masks. When I've finished wearing my single use mask, I'll remove the straps that go over my ears and reuse them. I tie a knot in each one to make a band. I then can use them as I would an elastic band.

I use spanish moss (grows on all the trees around here and it is always falling down) as a filler for the bottom of all my garden pots! It keeps soil from falling out the drainage holes, it helps hold a little extra water the plants can pull out later, and it eventually decomposes into fertilizer! :) best of all it is free!

Well, looks like I have to find a Dollar General store! Thanks for sharing that!
I've used wooden dowels as curtain rods. I've used pillow cases as kitchen curtains. I used the leftover fabric from a dust ruffle to make a pleated drapery valance. I combined all my sizing squares from knitting to make a sort of patchwork baby blanket. I was a couple squares short, so I knitted a couple squares of fabric ribbon to finish it.
In the kitchen, I've always used what I had and have made countless substitutions. It's always had a good outcome except for twice. I made an "everything in the kitchen" stew once. It tasted so bad I couldn't bring myself to eat it...even though I'm not a foodie and will usually eat anything I can, and even though I'd paid good money for all the ingredients. It was a surprise I couldn't eat it.
I love tapioca pudding. Once I made it with plant based milk and butter, and substituted the eggs for plant based egg powder. First, it turned out to be tapioca soup. Secondly, it tasted too bad to eat.
Other than that, my substitutions have worked just fine....well, except one more time when I didn't have cooking twine, so I tied together a length of twisty ties. Word was it tasted like metal. So, I never did that again!

Homemade egg noodles (everything from lasagne to stroganoff) is cheaper and healthier than the dried stuff (I always sprinkle in some extra bran and wheat germ to boost the nutrition). BUT it is a royal pain to roll out and cut the noodles. I use my large tortilla press to create lovely flat disks, then cut the noodles with my pizza cutter. It works a treat and is a lot less labor than either hand-rolling or using the attachment on my KitchenAid mixer.

Just an FYI on the penny items at DG. I used to work there for over 3 years. The store manager gets a weekly list of the penny items that need to be pulled from the shelves because they aren’t supposed to be sold.
IF the items don’t get pulled (they are actually hard to find sometimes because people that subscribe to penny sites actually HIDE them in the store sometimes), or the manager and employees (who are overworked and have many many things to do in a shift) simply don’t have time to pull them.
When they don’t get pulled and a customer buys them, the employee gets reprimanded by management for NOT pulling the items. Severely!!!
Just thought you would like to know this.
By buying these products you are actually causing the employees even more stress than they are already under.
I love your channel but I wasn’t happy to hear this.

Hi Emmy! We made it to Ohio but we’ll be roughing it for a few days as we lost some things with the move and our movers will be late in delivery. But the Lord is telling it to let it go and not be mad. On a happier not I think my husband figured our the cable and internet, and we have our DVD player and DVDs so we will live.
As for penny items, I usually don’t have much luck. But one day during their clearance sale deal, my son found a wooden spoon that came up to a penny and he was happy. I think he was about 5 months at the time, so this kept his attention and fascinated him for a while

I use mesh bags from oranges or onions as a scrubber for my cast iron frying pans. Bath scrubby is good for cleaning bath tubs. I've made my own yogurt using milk and plain yogurt as a starter (UA-cam has videos). I use wonton wrappers to make mini lasagnas in muffin tins, or mini key lime tarts. I try to use all wonton wraps once opened.

Yum, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and you've got a brownie sundae. I'm definitely going to give this one a try. I enjoy Oui yogurt and when it goes on sale I pick up a few. It comes in a glass container. It felt wrong to throw them away so I've used them to make candles, put small snacks like goldfish or nuts in for work. Most recently I gave some to my daughter and she makes her own baby food. She makes a big batch of whatever my grandson is eating that week and he eats some and the rest goes into my yogurt containers for another meal. I was able to get lids from Oui. It reminds me of the jelly jars we used for drinks when we were kids.

I am dying over here watching you make these brownies! They look delish! Another wonderful video, thanks Emmie and Paul! I don't have a panini press, but I do have a small skillet that I used as my press. I use old socks that have lost their partner to dust. This may be more for ladies but I use eye-shadow for my eyebraws.

I like using items from the kitchen for beauty. For example, sugar and coconut oil make a great scrub, honey makes a great hair mask (yes it is sticky but rinses out extremely easily in warm water), olive oil is a great substitute for moisturizer and apple cider vinegar for a scalp/dandruff treatment. They are far less expensive than beauty products, they work great and you only need a little bit and you can keep using the rest in the kitchen.
