Goulash is my go to panty meal. One pound of hamburger cooked with diced onions and Italian seasonings plus salt and pepper, cooked elbow macaroni( 1 cup cooked) 2 cans of diced tomatoes undrained, 1 can of tomato sauce. Cook the hamburger and onions together with the seasoning, drain fat if necessary, add the cooked elbow macaroni, tomatoes and tomato sauce and heat through until the sauce reduces and thickens. We pair it with some bread and a salad. Economical and delicious. I use my home canned tomatoes and tomato sauce out of my pantry but if you don't can, you can used store bought. We usually get 2 meals for 2 out of this recipe.

@@FrugalMoneySaver About every 2 months I actually inventory my pantry and freezers and make a list of what is there along with expiration dates. Then I sit down and make a list of meals that I can create from what I have. This last time, I filled an entire notebook sheet of meal ideas. When I do my weekly meal plan, I take the ideas from my notebook sheet, and only put on my grocery list any items I might need to compete a recipe. This also keeps me updated on any pantry items I might be getting low on. It takes less than 30 minutes but it saves me lots of money and I am able to eat my pantry items before they expire.

I talked with my husband last week about cooking from our pantry and freezer instead of going out to buy more food for a dish he wanted to make. His recipe called for six ingredients we didn’t have and some were expensive. He agreed it sounded like a good idea and then said he wanted to make a chicken dish and only needed asparagus and creme fraiche to make the recipe. I told him I thought he missed the point, but two ingredients was better than six! Still working on getting him onboard with cooking from the pantry and freezers, but I’m not giving up!

An added benefit of meal planning for me is that it frees up a lot of “real estate” in my brain and allows me to focus on what needs to be done each day. My go-to pantry meal is creamy tomato basil soup made from a jar of marinara sauce with added pesto and heavy cream or half and half to taste. Add a grilled cheese sandwich or salad and dinner’s ready.

It’s hard to give a pantry meal… as ingredients are always different week to week and month to month
But here are a few from past months:
-rice and beans with a few left over tortillas, cheese, lettuce and /OR tomato
-a can of about to expire baked beans and a couple of hotdogs left in the freezer, with two potatoes cut up to make french fries!
-a can of tuna, With some leftover fresh green beans and lettuce and tomato to make a salad Nicoise.
-left over pasta sauce with some rigatoni and grated fresh Parmesan
    - left over chicken to make a simple pot pie with left over beets for a small beet salad
    - in winter we use left over breakfast ingredients such as pancakes, sausage and eggs to make a breakfast for DINNER…
    These are a few💙💙💙💙

I like to add chopped green onions. I had a craving for spaghetti few days ago. Made the entire package of spaghetti noodles. Used half with pasta sauce. Remainder noodles made pasta salad with veggies and few slices of sandwich meat needed used up. Very economical and easy.

Save your weekly meal plan pages to inspire future meal plans. No need to constantly re-invent that wheel 😊
Newer cooks should keep in mind that the “best by” date of shelf-stable foods does not mean the food is not safe to eat. Don’t throw away good food. Of course cans that are bulging or smell off when opened should be tossed, no matter the date. Pastas and other dry goods should be stored in air-tight containers to keep them fresher and bug-free.
I’m a home canner. Pressure canning meat is safe an easy when you follow USDA food preservation guidelines - free online!
Easy shelf stable meals for us are tuna casserole, chicken soup or chicken and dumplings using my home canned soup base (chicken, onions, celery in broth), beef stroganoff or pork using canned chunks of meat, beef and barley soup made by dumping canned beef, and home-dehydrated veggies in a crock pot with broth, canned tomatoes, and barley…. I hope this helps 🌸

Millions of dollars worth of good food is thrown away by this marketing ploy to sell more. The FDA doesn't set these dates. As Miz said, use common sense! If food looks, tastes and smells good you are okay. People have been so scared into stockpiling enough food for a long time and then when the economy settles again, out the door this good food will go. Do as suggested, loss leaders, pantry items, inexpensive recipes and keep your money in your bank account and buy supplies only that you can use up in a reasonable amount of time. I am on my way to bake cupcakes from an "expired" mix from quite a while ago and it will be fine, I guarantee. I will just add a bit of baking powder because baking powder does lose it's effectiveness over time.

Diced ham from Easter that I had froze and wanted to use up so I made a white sauce, added the little cheese that was in the frig along with some mushrooms and some mixed vegetables. Placed it in a 9” baking dish and topped with some home made biscuits. Baked it @ 350 until the biscuits were golden brown, 20 minutes or so. It has turned chilly and it was nice to have the oven on to take that chill off my home. It will be about 4 servings or 4 meals for me! Lunches and dinners made easy. I don’t mind having the same meal for a couple of days with a small salad or extra veggies on the side. It’s what you do when you are a one person household and retired! Hi Emmy and Paul! I am a canner and I have a few things I pull out when needed.
1 jar of chicken, pork, or beef
    Some BBQ sauce
A jar of pepper slaw or pickled beets
Some corn relish (I like it as a salad.
    A jar of meat
    A jar of beans
    A jar of salsa
Tortillas and any toppings you like on your tacos.
    A jar of bone broth
    Any jar of meat
    A little water to thin
Assorted veggies that are in a jar, leftover, or from the pantry / freezer
    Any dried herbs you like
    Some rice, pasta, or beans.
I do make and can pasta sauce, chilli, and assorted soups as my "get outta the kitchen" card. These items can also be made ahead and frozen for those who do not can.
I hope this helps I learned to can and freeze out of necessity. Love your videos and your amazing positivity about frugal living. It doesn't have to be depressing and can actually be very freeing.

@@FrugalMoneySaver I was too. Pressure canner sat in the corner of our room for a year. Hubs said, "do it or don't, but it isn't taking up real estate." First thing I canned was beans. We eat them, they are frugal so if I messed up I wasn't out much. I read the instructions for the beans and the canner and then with my manual, beans, and recipe I did it. I put a chair in the kitchen and did not leave till they were done 75 minutes later. Now, it is a hobby that saves me time in the future and money from a small investment of both now. Lots of amazing UA-camrs that teach it. Check out kneady homesteader if you ever decide and go from there. Great way to preserve the garden.

From the 1980's don't forget baked potatoes (ok, microwaved works well) topped with assorted different foods. Broccoli in cheese sauce, maybe add a little meat; creamed peas, creamed mixed frozen veggies, and a whole host of other veggies in white sauce. Speaking of white sauce, any gravy based item designed for open faced sandwiches, to go over a biscuit, go over bread stuffing, rice, or other starch works. Chilli actualy works well and is filling, add some finely diced onions below the chili to become more filling; BBQ and baked beans work too. Taco meat, but better a 50-50 mix of taco meat with beans and extra tomato products works. Pureed cottage cheese used in place of sour cream takes less, hold its form better, and is also a good nutritional mix with potatoes. Dump a spoonful of thinner or thickened stew, pulled pork, or sloppy Joe mix over a potato; while a little leaner, you can use spaghetti sauce out of a jar or can too.

Hi Emmy and Paul! My pantry dish involves fresh ground beef. Brown ground beef, and one chopped onion, if you have bell peppers I add some chopped as well, add minced garlic. Drain the fat, then I add 1 cup white rice, a can of diced tomatoes, and a can of tomato sauce and water equal to 2 about cups liquid ( I’m generous with the more sauce than water because I like it tomatoey), salt, pepper, chili powder, and other seasonings like oregano, rosemary, etc to taste. Cover and simmer until liquid is absorbed. I eat this with a green salad on the side. This makes quite a bit and is a budget stretcher meal. It freezes well. I really like it with Tabasco or another hot sauce for a bit of a kick. Not everyone likes spicy so that’s why I don’t add more to the pot. I always made this as a poor college student, because it made so much; it really helped when I had no money, I could just pull a portion out of the freezer.

I haven't made it in a while, but I think it is worth mentioning. There is a dish from Japan called soboro. It is usually minced meat or egg in a sweet sauce; something like soy sauce and sugar. You can use tuna, too! You put the tuna on a pan and add a little bit of soy sauce and sugar. Heat it up until the sugar dissolves. You eat it over rice. You can have a simple veggie side dish or eat it as a snack. I got this from The Just Bento Cookbook by Makiko Itoh. She adds green onion , ginger, and cooking sake, but it works just fine with only soy sauce and sugar.

Saute a pan of onion and/or ground beef, throw everything else in and you have a 20-minute large pot of chili. Add spices to suit your own taste. I make a macaroni “hot dish” from the pantry. Sauté half a medium onion in oil, add diced garlic, 2 cans stewed tomatoes, one can tomato sauce-8 ounces and leftover, cooked hamburger from the freezer. This is a trick I learned- whenever I brown hamburger, I save 2 tablespoons into a container and keep it in the freezer. When it is at eight or 16 ounces, I know I can add it to a quick meal. While the tomatoes and hamburger are simmering for 20 minutes, I boil 8 ounces of elbow, macaroni, drain it, mix them both together in a small casserole dish, put whatever cheese on hand on top and bake it for 15 to 20 minutes at 350°.

My husband took early retirement a couple of years ago so that we could care for his mother who needed to move in with us after a very difficult health crisis. So living in and under our means has become something we have to refocus on. I find it a very creative experience, that reminds me of our first years of marriage. I too have found it so helpful to take stock of our pantry. We also have a small deep freeze that really has helped us to save our leftovers and to freeze vegetables and other things so they do not go to waste. Yesterday my husband bbq'd chicken shish kabobs and I made homemade humus, taziki sauce and flat bread. I try to make most of our bread using our bread machine and keep a large bin of flour always on hand. It was very satisfying though to make the flat bread by hand. It is so very simple to make and is delicious. Simple home cooking is becoming a lost art, but I believe it is such an important component in making a healthy, happy and frugal home. I look forward to seeing more videos in the future have a wonderful day!

Dixie is a cutie! I usually have canned tomatoes and canned white beans in our pantry and always have garlic in the house. I make a creamy bean, garlic and tomato soup. Good hot with toasted cheese sandwiches and good cold with cheese and crackers and a cold veg platter. I think we had the same kind of week. I am painting the interior of our house including ceilings. We hired a painter to paint our vaulted ceilings and walls in the main level of our house and I am doing the rest of the house. Our painter had a family emergency and had to cancel so last week my husband took vacation and between the two of us got the vaulted ceiling and walls painted but I was too tired to cook. We had take out three nights. Since we don't have to pay a painter, we didn't feel bad about take out. Sometimes you just have to roll with what life gives you.

Tater Tot Casserole….isn’t especially cheap but it feeds a big family. Choose your amounts depending on your need by layering in a greased casserole: RAW ground beef; canned veggie of choice, drained; canned or homemade cream of anything soup w/ about 1/2 cup of milk to thin it out; and finally layer frozen tater tots over the top. Cook at 400* for about 30 minutes or until tater tots are brown and crispy. So yummy!

Hello Emmy and Paul. Thanks for the nudge to use the food in my pantry! I buy fresh foods each week, and they get used, whereas the tinned foods get left in the cupboard.
One of my quick meals is baked beans on toast with grated cheese on top. Another meal is sliced potatoes, onions and carrots layered with sliced bacon in an ovenproof dish. Covered with vegetable stock and cooked until veggies are tender. Sprinkle a little strong cheese on top to melt just before serving.

Love a tuna casserole, but alas I’m the only tuna lover in my household…
I always have tinned lentils and tomatoes in my pantry and so at the end of a month I often make frugal “meat” sauce with other shelf stable staples like tomato paste, olive oil, garlic and onion salt if I don’t have fresh - whatever I have that seems good. I either freeze it or eat with whatever starch we happen to have. It’s delicious and when you need a quick freezer meal it’s ready - and you can always add any kind of mince when you’re able to get it/afford it. Additionally if you have any vegetarians at your table you can keep some aside before adding any meat. Frozen pasta sauce if any kind really comes in handy 😊

My frugal go-to dish is Cacio e Pepe with linguine or spaghetti. I always got some peccorino romano in the fridge (and one could portion it and freeze it, but in my experience it stays good for a while in the fridge). The cheese itself is more expensive then some gouda or cheddar, but you just need so little per serving, that you save money by using the peccorino! The dish is so incredible simple:
Cook the pasta with some salt, when the pasta is halfway cooked, heat some grounded black pepper in a pan. If you can slightly smell it, it's roasted perfectly. Put some pasta water in the pan and mix your finely shredded peccorino with hot pasta water too. Add the cheese mixutre into the pan and then the noodles. It's okay, if they aren't fully cooked yet, as they will finish cooking in the sauce and soak up the flavor. The dish is ready, when the sauce reaches the prefered thickness. It's so creamy and cheap. Since I know this, I don't need some frozen ready-made meals in the freezer or canned meals. It is also cheapter then ready meals

Thank you for another great video. My grandma years ago would can pork in mason jars. She would warm that up and she would make a salad that I think she invented because nobody I know has ever made this. She use one can of veg-all mixed vegetables about a fourth of a cup of macaroni, and little bit of mayonnaise. She would put the veg all in a strainer to strain the liquid off of it. She would cook her macaroni and then put it in the strainer. Then, put it in a mixing bowl and add a little bit of mayonnaise. Then just mix it up. If you never tried this it is delicious. This is also great with a can of salmon.

Spaghetti and jarred pasta sauce is always a good pantry meal. You can add meat, such as ground beef, Italian sausage, or meatballs, as well. Or just go meatless. I always make chili quite often with canned diced tomatoes, tomato paste, beans, etc. I do add some fresh vegetables such as bell peppers, onion and garlic, and ground beef. I am trying to get back to meal prepping as well. Yesterday I spent several hours cutting up vegetables, preparing salads, cooking chicken and vegetables, and making muffins for the week ahead. The best part is that I did not buy a thing! We have so much food, there is no reason to go to the store or eat out. I need to use up the food we have on hand and then restock.

My favourite has to be polish halusky - if I have an onion, some cabbage, plus some egg noodles or pasta, it's what I'll make when things are thin on the ground. I just fry the onion and sliced cabbage, chuck in the dry noodles and some water with a veg stock cube to come half the way up, add salt, pepper and garlic powder if you like, cover tightly and cook for about 10 minutes (or til noodles are done) then add plenty of butter - it's out of this world! If I have a tin of luncheon meat or leftover bacon I dice some of that up and put it in too. Another pantry meal I like is a medieval-style pottage , which is basically just sliced onions or leeks, a root vegetable diced, some sort of grain like barley (or you could use oats or bulgar wheat etc), some sort of pea or bean (or lentils), cabbage if you like, some meaty bones if you have them, and plenty of stock or water to cover plus seasonings - cook long and slow for a simple but hearty meal with bread and butter. A fave variety of pottage I like to make is with leeks, bulgar wheat and leftover chicken bits - it comes out particularly delicious and is even more so with a dollop of leftover soft cheese mixed in to make it creamy!

Here's an idea for pantry meals I got from "Mindy Mom." Go through your pantry and place shelf-staple ingredients in a large zip lock bag that you can grab when you are short of time or just low on energy. An example of this would be a box of spaghetti with a jar of sauce, can of chili with chips, or can of chicken with egg noodles. She says to write on the bag the date you grouped the items and a recipe for the meals. These meal packets can all be located in one area of your pantry for easy access. These are just a sample of how you can organize those items you need to use up. I have found that this has been a good way to use up pantry items effectively and save brain cells from trying to think of what to fix. LOL

My go to pantry meal ( adaptable to what you have) a can of diced tomato, a jar of artichoke hearts, olives ( whatever kind you have, add what your family likes) if you have onion and garlic dice some up and sauté it first, otherwise use powdered, I prefer drained chick peas but I’ve done shredded chicken or cannellini beans as the protein. frozen spinach drained ( like half a bag of the frozen) add chili flakes if you like them, and either balsamic vinegar or fresh lemon juice. Add a couple splashes to your own taste. Mushrooms are good in this. Sauté fresh veggies till soft and add in the rest and simmer while it reduces. It’s good on couscous, any pasta, rice or on a plate with some toasted bread or garlic bread. Very adaptable. Add capers if you don’t have olive. I make this so much through the years I don’t have a recipe.

Thanks for another great video. Planning one week (or even two weeks) of meals at a time keeps me pantry-focused. Impulse buying can be a budget-buster for me. I try to grocery shop only once or twice a month. Yes, I miss out on some loss leaders and clearance items in the process. But it drastically reduces the time spent shopping and the opportunities for impulse buying. When meat goes on sale, I buy larger quantities, cook it, and freeze the leftovers. I try to always have pre-cooked packets of ground beef, chicken, chicken legs, pork roast, pulled pork, turkey, and ground pork sausage in the freezer. When the meat is already cooked, the rest of the meal is easy to pull together quickly with pantry inventory.

Lisa, we all have small areas of our lives like that! Don’t be too hard on yourself! Thanks for watching and sharing!

You toldyour subscribers about the flash food app a couple months. I downloaded the app but no stores participated in my state. This week I’m cat sitting in Philadelphia. I checked the flash food app out of curiosity to see if there were any stores in her neighborhood. I found a participating store three blocks away from her home. I got a chicken Caesar salad kit for only $4 (regularly $7) It wasn’t outdated and was fresh when I had it for dinner. Thank you for telling us about this app.

Thank you for another great video!
I always keep in my freezer containers of ready to eat homemade meat sauce. When I run out of dinner ideas I pull it out from my freezer, warm it up on slow, cook my pasta to serve it on top and make a green salad. Nutritious, delicious and easy.

Canned chicken, green chilis, and cheese enchiladas. I make the sauce with sour cream and cream of chicken on top. Bake on the oven. Delicious!

I have this book. It’s the one I learned to cook from scratch. My grandma used to have a copy. My daughter found a copy of it in a little free library.

Have you tried the Ginger Cream cookie recipe from that cookbook? It isn’t in most Betty Crocker cookbooks. It is a holiday favorite in my family!

I make burrito bowls. Rice, black beans, peppers & onions, sour cream, & salsa. Top w/lettuce & tomato. I add chicken and avocado to the bowl if I have them. I also make quesadillas which, pretty much, have the same ingredients (except I use tortillas, of course).

Really enjoyed the inspiration! My pantry go to: a can of Campbell's Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup with Bisquick dumplings.
