Joan Baez was my first window into American folk music, and opened a whole world to me which included: Peter, Paul & Mary; The Spinners; Simon & Garfunkel; Ian & Sylvia and many more. Then there was, of course, Joni Mitchell.
Joani served me coffee in the afternoons past my university classes in a Yorkville Toronto coffee shop called "The Riverboat". When nothing much was happening, she was allowed to mount the stage and play her guitar and sing. I was very young. Wish I could say that I then appreciated her brilliance, but that would not be true.
According to a biography I read of Leonard Cohen, when he was riding in a taxi with his manager en route to perform for the first time at the Newport Folk Festival and visibly disturbed, his manager asked what was the matter. “I’m scared,” Cohen answered. “Why?” “Because I can’t sing.”. “Look,” his manager said, “none of you guys can sing. When I want singing I go to the Met.” Well, I’d never heard of Carol Cisneros before, but clearly her performance here belies Cohen’s manager’s riposte. Cisneros can definitely sing. I’m just not sure what she’s singing about, since I don’t know Spanish.
Where was it in Big Sur? Just curious because I was a park. Ranger at Pacific Valley. Don’t remember any venues up there big enough to have such a concert, since Big Sur is mostly restaurants and a few hotels.
Oh my word! Whatever happened to Carol Ann Cisneros. A purity of voice to rival even Joan Baez; and this is the only recording -audio or video - that I have ever seen of her.
The mother load of the west coast zietgiest. Mitchell was the great artist of this time and she has certainly had an amazing career. The video is almost spooky to watch. Alittle like a home movie. The love of music is like no other. It can transcend anything.
“The great artist of this time?” She’s not even the “great artist” of this video. Carol Cisneros blew her away. How could anyone have watched this video and not have noticed this? I like Joni Mitchell fine, but let’s try to have a little perspective.
ua-cam.com/video/tUqD1U4m9ww/v-deo.html I heard Joni's song:"I came upon this child of God" sang by a fire, by a beautiful girl one night in summer 1971 on this very beach What else...
UA-cam may be the closest we'll ever get to looking back in time; but, oh how glad I am to have these precious moments we can share here!!!
Wow, Mimi Farina covering Moby Grape! I never knew about this.
Tour-de-force of a performance.
I was there...
Now I'm here...
And we still have a way
to go to get back to the garden.
Love Ya, Tony Minervino
Love it. All voice, poetry and talent. No make up, no suggestiveness, no editing and lights. Just purity. How I wish for this to resurface...
go and live in a monastery, you'll get what you describe I think.
I was there. The music was wonderful, amazing then, and it still is.
Respect dude
I was there, too! Wonderful!

Where was it in Big Sur? Worked up the Pacific Valley, but don’t remember any venues big enough to have such a concert.

1969, incredible time of human freedom!
Music is a time machine...
Carol is easily the most talented of all those who appeared, with the possible exceptions of Ms. Baez and Ms. Mitchell !
those who love it are already there
