As always, Gentlemen, you guys don't disappoint. And I can count on George and Ken to expand my musical horizons. Huzzah! I am now going to listen to some quality prog.
1. The Dark Side of the Moon 2. Selling England By The Pound 3. Brain Salad Surgery 4. Tales From Topographic Oceans 5. Larks Tongue in Aspic HM: A Passion Play, Felona e Sorona, In a Glass House, Tubular Bells, Queen, Camel, For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night
@RickLaBonte Ah Rick, what a man! One Live Badger. Thank you for giving this a mention. I take you to Glasgow, Scotland, 12th March 1973. I'm at school, aged 13. A friend greets me in the morning with news that the Black Sabbath gig he'd attended on the Friday just past, was amazing (ticket price, just under 1 dollar...yeah, I know!!). I wasn't big on the Sabs at that point, more a Floydian. "I also saw a band you'd definitely like...the support group, Badger". I wasted no time and marched off at the end of the school day, to pick up the album. Took a few stores to find it, but I did. So, not only do I have the vinyl, replete with gatefold sleeve and pop-up badger, but the Atlantic record labels are on the wrong sides! Always, always loved that record. I don't think there's been a better live debut anywhere (there may not be that many!) but it was a brave thing to do...and it so worked. I do also have a 7" promo vinyl of White Lady, the title from their 2nd that you mentioned. It's fine, but Badger it ain't. Something derailed them (Allen Toussaint?) after their debut release and they lurched in a whole other (entirely wrong) direction. Hey ho....we have one amazing album, for which I am grateful...
I was that young guy going into record stores buying these amazing classics, often the very day or week released. I had left school and had more cash to do it! What a year for albums and concerts/gigs! My pick`s: 1) Genesis- Selling England By The Pound 2) King Crimson- Lark`s Tongues 3) Pink Floyd- Dark Side of The Moon 4) Nektar- Remember The Future 5) Caravan-For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night HM `s: Amon Duul 2- Wolf City Can: Future Days Steely Dan- Countdown To Ecstasy Yes: Yessongs Manfred Mann`s Earthband- Solar Fire Renaissance- Ashes Are Burning
Excellent as ever gents, entertaining, and informative! My picks for 1973 are: 5. "Dark Side of the Moon" - Pink Floyd 4. "Selling England By the Pound" - Genesis 3. "Brain Salad Surgery" - ELP 2. "Inside" - Eloy 1. "Space Ritual" - Hawkwind HMs: "Tales From Topographic Oceans" - Yes ; "Ashes are Burning" - Renaissance ; "Hatfield And The North" - Hatfield And The North
Great show Pete here are my top 5 from the year I was born 1973: 1. Pink Floyd ----- Dark Side of the Moon 2. Genesis ------ Selling England by the Pound 3. ELP ----- Brain Salad Surgery 4. Jethro Tull ----- A Passion Play 5. Yes ------ Tales from Topographic Oceans
That Enrico Rava album is a masterpiece, Ken. Love that you did the list the way you did, I don’t care if it broke the rules. *Anyone who wants to listen for free:* I know that album is on Apple Music, which means it’s almost definitely on Spotify as well (and I’m sure it’s uploaded to UA-cam, but I always prefer the sound quality on Apple Music). I didn’t know it’s not on CD, that’s tragic. Just one more reason for me to move my ass to buy a record player… 🤘✌️
Another great time In The Prog Seat and thanks, Pete, for adding the lists to the comments. As always, some choices on the show have been added to the SoT listening list. Listed mine a few days back on the Hudson Valley Squares 1973 show but repeated below. 1. A Wizard, A True Star - Todd Rundgren 2. A Passion Play - Jethro Tull 3. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd 4. Brain Salad Surgery - Emerson, Lake and Palmer 5. Selling England By The Pound - Genesis Great music that year. It was damn near impossible to buy everything as it was released. Thanks again, gents, for your time and keeping us entertained and informed.
My favorite year (my birth year). There are albums that will always be within me. 1. Pink Floyd - The dark side of the moon 2. Genesis - Selling England by the pound 3. Jethro Tull - A passion play 4. Camel - S/T 5. Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Solar fire Honorable mentions: King Crimson - Larks tongues in Aspic, Yes - Tale from...., Nektar - Remember the future, Eloy - Inside, Agitation Free - 2nd, Soft Machine - Seven, Gentle Giant - In a glass house, Billy Cobham - Spectrum, ELP - Brain salad surgery etc.
great pick Ken!!!! i knew you'ld pick Brain Salad but yeah, Brain Salad and Fragile are my favorite prog albums and i'm still amazed everytime i drop the need on that album that it came out in '73, to me it's flawless and seamless like Floyd's DSOTM and it flows perfectly and always seems to be over before it starts-it strange and very few albums do that for me and have that hypnotic flow. Kind Of Blue is another album that flows like that for me. AND, it's one of my favorite album covers as well. thanks Pete, awesome show as always gentlemen!!!!!!!! \m/\m/
great show. great year. These are the five that I am still listening to regularly 1) Jethro Tull: Passion Play. 2) Gentle Giant: In a Glass House. 3) Yes: Tales from the Topographic Oceans/Yessongs 4) Renaissance: Ashes are burning. 5) Genesis: Selling England by the Pound
Lucky enough to have seen a lot of the bands mentioned and the truly wonderful music they produced. A big thanks to everyone who took part, hopefully The Jethro Tull Passion Play gets recorded for a show.
Excellent stuff! My picks Pink Floyd-dark side of the moon Camel-camel The mahavishnu orchestra-birds of fire The return to forever-light as a feather King crimson -larks tongue in aspic Honorable mentions Steely dan-countdown to ecstacy Herbie hancock-headhunters Mile Oldfield-tubular bells Genesis-selling England by the pound Billy cobham-spectrum

number one without a doubt Genesis - Selling England by the Pound, one of my fav prog albums of all time, and a couple albums from my home country where they booed genesis in Leiden in 1981 when they played the newer stuff, the Netherlands, 2. Alquin - Mountain queen 3. supersister - Iskander 4. Earth and Fire - Atlantis 5. Ekseption - Trinity
Good call on Renaissance, I saw them here in São Paulo a few weeks ago and took my son, they were fantastic and Annie’s voice is still amazing, they have always been pretty popular here in Brazil. Hatfield and North too!

Great show from the Prog gentlemen. Thank you for all the fun and insightful picks. Currently my top 5 1973 prog albums in no particular order are Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra, Semiramis - Dedicato A Frazz, Jethro Tull - Passion Play, Roxy Music - For your Pleasure and Gong - Flying Teapot.
My pick are: 1- Area - Arbeit macht frei 2- Banco - Io sono nato libero 3- Gentle Giant - In A Glass House 4- Gong - Angel’s Egg 5- Genesis- Selling England by the Pound HM: Frank Zappa - Overnight Sensation Alphataurus - Alphataurus Caravan - For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Nighr ELP - Brain Salad Surgery King Crimson - Larks’ Tongues Magma - MDK Osanna - Palepoli
My picks were mentioned, and some superfluous ones too :) but I was bemused why there was no vote for Caravan "For girls who grow plump in the night" - their last truly brilliant album and one of the best from this fabulous year. Oh, and I have a soft spot for Greensalde, so I have to add their debut to the equation.
Great show for a great year. Here's my attempt at a list. Order optional. Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy Camel - Camel Eloy - Inside Yes - Tales from Topographical Oceans Nektar - Remember the Future Rick Wakeman - Six Wives of Henry the Eighth Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Don’t have time to make my own list at the moment but I have to mention De De Lind’s sole album, “Io non so da dove vengo e non so dove mai andrò. Uomo è il nome che mi han dato.” It’s a heavy Italian Prog masterpiece. I will be watching tomorrow, definitely looking forward to it! Thanks guys 🤘
1. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink floyd 2. Selling England By The Pound - Genesis 3- Tubular Bells- Mike Oldfield 4. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery 5. Hawkwind - Space Ritual Honorables mentions : Camel' debut + King Crimson's Larks' Tongues In Aspics
2012 re-recording of The Journey to the Centre of the Earth mentioned by Ken is brilliant! Not only because of the quality of the recording, which obviously lacked in the original, but also because of all the added material. Or, better to say, restored material, which was meant to be there from the beginning, but was cut in the 73 due to the format and budget limitations.
For Your Pleasure is a 10/10 masterpiece imo. First half is incredible, makes me move, incredibly moving… but that second half just sends me, dude. The title track is in the top 10 best experimental/art/prog tracks of all time imo… 🤘✌️ Edit: and, Stranded, the second album they released that year, nips at its heals.. it’s definitely also a masterpiece, juuuust shy of being their best imo.
1. Genesis- Selling england by the pound 2. Pink Floyd- The dark side of the moon 3. Return to forever- Hymn of the seventh galaxy 4. Yes- Tales from topographic oceans 5. King Crimson- Lark's tongues in aspic 6. ELP- Brain salad surgery 7. Jethro Tull- A passion play 8. Renaissance- Ashes are burning 9. Frank Zappa- Overnite sensation 10. 1) Genesis- Selling England by the Pound 2) Jethro Tull- A Passion Play 3) Renaissance- Ashes are burning 4) Yes- Tales from Topographic Oceans 5) Queen- Queen
Kerry Livgren has stated in interviews & his autobiographies that Gentle Giant was his favorite band and greatest influence. And you can hear it clearly in his phenomenal prog compositions.
@@justamops Carry On is not the best example, but try Icarus and The Pinnacle from the album Masque and the entire album Song for America. And many other great Livgren songs too!
I like Ken Golden's approach pf listing A & Btitles, giving room for things I might not otherwise have heard. That really adds a useful dimension to these "list" videos!
1- Genesis : Selling England By The Pound 2- Yes : Tales From Topographic Oceans 3- Gentle Giant : In A Glass House 4- Jethro Tull : A Passion Play 5- King Crimson: Larks' Tongues In Aspic
1) Genesis - Selling England By the Pound 2) Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon 3) King Crimson -Larks' Tongues in Aspic 4) Camel - Camel 5) Frank Zappa - Over-Nite Sensation
Larks by Crimson would be my pick, Wishbone Four would be my nearly and Cosmic Slop by Funkadelic would be my wild card - a more stripped back lineup but with some sounds and ideas well ahead of rock and pop. Progressive Funk. And Dark Side is only commercial because its Dark Side...its still - if you can detach yourself....a really weird album, with ideas up the wazoo and a real attempt to make a soundscape not done before. You cant - now that teens wear the tee who dont even know the record - criticise it for bein commercial. Its not We Cant Dance...
Well my list is gonna be similar to my *general* list on the squares. 5. Kayak - See See The Sun 4. Gentle Giant - In a Glass House 3. Nektar - Remember The Future 2. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound 1. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Great show as always, guys - sorry it's taken me a year to catch up with it. Just one little reservation: Hero and Heroine wasn't released until March 1974, but as it was recorded the previous November I guess it still qualifies as a 1973 record. My own choices: 1. The Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd 2. Flying Teapot - Gong 3. Brain Salad Surgery - ELP 4. Selling England By The Pound - Genesis 5. The Faust Tapes - Faust Honorable mentions: Atem - Tangerine Dream For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night - Caravan For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music
Chuck's encyclopedic knowledge never ceases to amaze me. I'm pretty sure that dude has heard literally every album ever recorded, and knows exactly who played on each and every one of them.
My Top 5 Prog of 1973: 5. Bachdenkel "Lemmngs" 4. Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells" 3. Billy Cobham "Spectrum" 2. Pink Floyd "Dark Side of the Moon" 1. King Crimson "Larks Tongue in Aspic"
1. King Crimson - Lark's Tongues In Aspic 2. Yes - Tales from Topographic Oceans 3. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery 4. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds Of Fire 5. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
Top 5: King Crimson - Larks Tongue in Aspic Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon RTF - Light as a Feather Strawbs - Bursting at the Seams ELP - Brain Salad Surgery HM Genesis - Selling England by the Pound Agitation Free - 2nd Caravan - For Girls Who Go Plump in the Night
Usually on these shows there are a fairly large number of albums I note to go and try out, on this one however I already have most of the main picks. Big props to Ken, then, for his hardball list. And Ken hit the nail on the head with Brain Salad Surgery, great to also see him flying the flag for Tales from Topographic Oceans. And I have to agree that Rick's 6 wives has never been bettered - he's come close with a few, and that's one album I've had since xmas 1974 that I still listen to regularly. Nice to see Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Argent and Badger getting a look in as well. There's a book on Sonicbond called '1973 The Greatest year of progressive rock', most of the albums featured in it were mentioned except for Greenslade's first, Gong's Flying Teapot, Can's Future Days, Kayak's See see the Sun and Caravan's For Girls who Grow Plump in the nIght. 1973 was the year I started at secondary (high) school - it was an all boys boarding school in a small English town (although I was what they called a 'day boy' as I lived in the town and was able to go to it as I had somehow managed to pass the '11 plus' exam). My class mates all had older siblings so through them I got to know about much of the music I still listen to today. By Christmas 1974 I had been gifted some of the albums mentioned tonight - notably the ELP, Yes and Rick Wakeman - Genesis I got for xmas '75. Most of the rest followed over the next 48 years.
1. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound 2. Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning 3. Gentle Giant - In A Glass House 4. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon 5. Ruphus - New Born Day
1. King Crimson - Larks Tongues in Aspic 2. Return To Forever - Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy 3. Herbie Hancock - Headhunters 4. Genesis - Selling England 5. The Who - Quadraphenia (this is debatable but I think it’s pretty proggy)
Top 5 Genesis-Selling England by the pound Gentle Giant-In a glass house Pink Floyd- Dark side of the moon King Crimson- Larked Tongues in aspec Yes-Tales from topographic oceans Hm Frank Zappa overnite sensation, ELP Brain Salad surgery, Mahavishnu Orchestra Birds of fire, Return to Forever Light as a feather/Hymn of the seventh galaxy, Herbie Hancock Head hunters, Jethro Tull Passion play, Camel debut, Rick Wakeman Six wives of Henry VII Yessongs and Between nothingness and eternity if we include live albums.
Top 10 1. Camel - Camel 2. Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning 3. Nektar - Remember the Future 4. Caravan - For Girls Who Go Plump in the Night 5. Kayak - See the Sun 6. Greenslade - Greenslade 7. Emerson, Lake, & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery 8. Frank Zappa - Overnight Sensation 9. Electric Light Orchestra - On the Third Day 10. Peter Hammill - Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night This could have been Prog’s peak year as there are many exceptional releases including undisputed classics that didn’t make the cut. Queen’s Debut would have been ranked #2 if one were to consider it Prog but I don’t.
All of my very top favorites (Dark Side, etc.) were mentioned, but for some honorables: Styx II (I love A Day, Father OSA, and Lady) ELO II Caravan - For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night A very enjoyable discussion, guys - thanks!
My Top Five: 1) Mahavishnu Orchestra - Between Nothingness & Eternity 2) Magma - Mekanik Destructiw Kommandoh 3) Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds Of Fire 4) Return To Forever - Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy 5) Weather Report - Sweetnighter

"Notice how somebody never follows directions?" 🤣 but I love it that Mr. Ken Golden did so. In fact, if I were in his shoes I would probably do the same thing. Who doesn't love paying homage to underrated classics?
I love Area - Arbeit Macht Frei is my favourtite album by them! Fantastic record. I recently got Demetrio Stratos' first solo album (Metrodora) from my local record shop - LOL not sure what to make of that one!!
I gotta say I was delighted that Ken mentioned Il Rovescio Della Medaglia's Contaminazione album. Gets a little schmaltzy for a minute, in the middle, but on either side of that it's epic Italian progressive rock. Outstanding.
5) Mwandishi band - Sextant 4) Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells 3) The Mothers - Overnite Sensation 2) Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery 1) King Crimson - Larks’ Tongues In Aspic
The 'commercial' 5 are easy - Tales from Topographic Oceans, Dark Side of the Moon, Brain Salad Surgery, Selling England by the Pound and Ashes are Burning but I'd like to mention Fripp and Eno's (No Pussyfooting), Soft Machine's 6th, Museo Rosenbach's Zarathustra, Magma's MDK and Il Rovescio Della Medaglia's Contaminazione
DSOTM by far the best and my favorite 1973 issue. Great to hear Ken mentioning MM Chapter Three. Their two albums were just about sufficient jazz for me.
1. Selling England - Genesis. The greatest of Prog epics - The Cinema Show. 2. Renaissance Ashes Are Burning 3. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells 4. Jethro Tull - Passion Play 5. Yes - Yessongs
fusion: 1. mahavishnu orchestra - birds of fire 2. weather report - sweetnighter 3. herbie hancock - sextant 4. herbie hancock - head hunters 5. return to forever - hymn of the seventh galaxy bonus: billy cobham - spectrum santana & mclaughlin - love, devotion, surrender prog: 1. gentle giant - in a glass house 2. yes - tales from topographic oceans 3. king crimson - larks' tongues in aspic 4. genesis - selling england by the pound 5. can - future days bonus: pink floyd - the dark side of the moon frank zappa - over-nite sensation
1. Selling England by the Pound - Genesis 2. A Passion Play - Jethro Tull 3. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd 4. 2nd - Agitation Free 5. Future Days - Can Honourable Mentions: Brain Salad Surgery, Spectrum, Lark's Tongues in Aspic, Remember the Future, Herbie Handcock's HeadHunters, Birds of Fire, Faust IV, Ashes are Burning, Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night, Quadrophenia
I still have my original vinyl copy. Fantastic album. The lyrics are genius. I hardly ever hear it discussed. Would always be in my top 10 of greatest prog albums.
@@bertkarlsson1421 Bert I have some of the J.A. Seazer albums in my collection on CD, including Kokkyou Junreika. In fact I have copies of Ship Of Fools for sale on our Discogs page. Personally I find J.A. Seazer to be a bit of a mixed bag, along with Tokyo Kid Brothers and Geinoyamashirogumi. I like parts of each of their albums a lot and other parts not so much. These are theatrical oriented bands and a lot of what is going on is lost on Western ears. Take Geinoyamashirogumi's "Osorezan" - first side is incredible. Second side leaves me scratching my head.
@@kengolden666 Hi Ken! I'm really glad that you know about J.A. Seazer and Geinoh Yamashirogumi!!! Most people in the west have never heard of them. They are two of my favorite bands/artists!! They don't sound like any other music i've heard! When it comes to Seazer I think Shintokumaru and Kokkyou Junreika are his masterpieces! I love the theatrical aspect of the music! It's kind of a wierd mix of opera, psychedelic rock, japanese folk and zeuhl! I think Shintokumaru might be the best prog album ever made. And it doesn't even exist on ProgArchives, that's how obscure it is. As for Geinoh Yamashirogumi I love the entire osorezan album and most albums I've heard by them!! I wish more people knew about them. You should give Shintokumaru as a homework asignment to someone! It would be interesting to see what they think! I bet Pete wouldn't like it, but maybe Chuck would. And you should do an episode of in the prog seat all about japanese prog were you could talk about some of this music! Flower Travellin Band and Osamu Kitajima are two other great artists! There is so much great music from Japan!!
@@bertkarlsson1421 Bert I think the main problem would be the other panelists are not that familiar with the Japanese prog scene. I can do an entire show but just me is not a panel.
I am one of those that Dark Side of The Moon drove me away from Pink Floyd. I was sick to death of Money, I loved my weird, cryptic, spacey early Pink Floyd. I resented (wrongly), that my eclectic out there band was now wildly popular and on the radio every 30 minutes. Then I hear Animals and thought this is pretty good after all. Then came The Wall, back on the radio every 30 minutes again. Back in my bad books. I revisited The Wall and learned to appreciate it, maybe it is time to revisit Dark Side of The Moon.
Money was obviously a successful single but I think it stands out like a sore thumb on that album. It doesn’t really fit in with the rest of it. To me the album takes a down turn going from The Great Gig in the Sky to that, obviously in vinyl record days it would be the start of a new side. The rest of the album is weird, cryptic and spacey.
Agree that Over-Nite Sensation is a great entry point for those possibly interested in Zappa. I'm with Ken on Tales from Topographic Oceans, as I don't quite think it's a flawless album, but would easily crack my Top 5 from Yes. Even though I don't listen to it nearly as often as I once did, sitting through it in its entirety is never an issue when I do. Rick says Pink Floyd was the band that helped him get more into progressive rock; I'm the exact reverse: I couldn't stand them for years. It was only after getting into Yes, Genesis, Emerson, Lake & Palmer and King Crimson that I was led back to Floyd...and then it all finally clicked. The Dark Side of the Moon is a perfect album in every way, even with its oversaturation. It's probably my favorite from the band if I'm totally honest (though Wish You Were Here and Animals were always nearly tied with it.) I think Chuck and Ken might be correct about Renaissance being a bit more popular in the US (especially the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic) than in other parts of the globe; I heard them quite a bit on NYC radio around the same time I was just getting into progressive rock (in 2000/2001), and many people I knew from different parts of NY (and friends from Philadelphia at the time) raved about them constantly. I believe Annie Haslam resides somewhere in Pennsylvania. Another long post. Great episode, guys!
There is an album I like that hasn't been called, and that's Chameleon in the shadow of the night by Peter Hammill. I find it odd that Peter's solo work isn't being mentioned more often. I know George and Eric are not the biggest fans, but hopefully Pete, Chuck or Ken will single out an album or two of his at some point.
1. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound 2. King Crimson - Larks' Tongues in Aspic 3. Gentle Giant - In a Glass House 4. Henry Cow - Leg End 5. Alquin - The Mountain Queen
I often thought of 1973 as Rock's greatest year, let alone Progressive Rock. It seems that pretty much everyone put out either their very best or at least a truly excellent release that year. Great year for Fusion too! Just look at the titles listed by the panel here. One that may have been forgotten here is my favorite Weather Report album. Sweetnighter.
Love seeing Magma - Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh on Chuck's list. It's my fav album by the band. However this song from the album 1001 Centigrades ua-cam.com/video/II5IMgppX4o/v-deo.html is more fusion. I admire Christian Vander for his drumming of course, but even for the fact that he kept his 70s sound on the drums when everybody else was experimenting, adding electronics, etc.

Thanks to everyone for another very enjoyable, insightful and entertaining program. Great stuff.

2. Genesis ------ Selling England by the Pound
3. ELP ----- Brain Salad Surgery
4. Jethro Tull ----- A Passion Play
1. A Wizard, A True Star - Todd Rundgren
2. A Passion Play - Jethro Tull
3. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
4. Brain Salad Surgery - Emerson, Lake and Palmer

Great music that year. It was damn near impossible to buy everything as it was released. Thanks again, gents, for your time and keeping us entertained and informed.
Thanks John, excellent list!

great pick Ken!!!! i knew you'ld pick Brain Salad but yeah, Brain Salad and Fragile are my favorite prog albums and i'm still amazed everytime i drop the need on that album that it came out in '73, to me it's flawless and seamless like Floyd's DSOTM and it flows perfectly and always seems to be over before it starts-it strange and very few albums do that for me and have that hypnotic flow.

1973 we were listening to Italian radio RAI pop off and all those great bands you mention. Malta 🇲🇹 is that close to Sicily.
One of the best synth solos ever on "The Dog...."
Great show for a great year. Here's my attempt at a list. Order optional.

1. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink floyd
2. Selling England By The Pound - Genesis
3- Tubular Bells- Mike Oldfield
4. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
5. Hawkwind - Space Ritual
Honorables mentions : Camel' debut + King Crimson's Larks' Tongues In Aspics
Missed you in this show, bhai. Hope you are well.
Wish you were here to give the Floyd some love!
The title track is in the top 10 best experimental/art/prog tracks of all time imo… 🤘✌️
Edit: and, Stranded, the second album they released that year, nips at its heals.. it’s definitely also a masterpiece, juuuust shy of being their best imo.

Kerry Livgren has stated in interviews & his autobiographies that Gentle Giant was his favorite band and greatest influence. And you can hear it clearly in his phenomenal prog compositions.
An older friend loaned me 🐙. I started collecting the vinyl. Kansas, in prog mode are still amazing.
I never knew this. It’s amazing to think of Carry on Wayward Son is this light.
@@justamops Carry On is not the best example, but try Icarus and The Pinnacle from the album Masque and the entire album Song for America. And many other great Livgren songs too!
I believe Kerry also said that Tony Banks of Genesis was his favorite piano/keyboard player.
I like Ken Golden's approach pf listing A & Btitles, giving room for things I might not otherwise have heard. That really adds a useful dimension to these "list" videos!
Me too, that's also the best way to get into learning about new bands
1- Genesis : Selling England By The Pound
2- Yes : Tales From Topographic Oceans
3- Gentle Giant : In A Glass House
4- Jethro Tull : A Passion Play
5- King Crimson: Larks' Tongues In Aspic
1) Genesis - Selling England By the Pound
2) Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
3) King Crimson -Larks' Tongues in Aspic
4) Camel - Camel
5) Frank Zappa - Over-Nite Sensation
Larks by Crimson would be my pick, Wishbone Four would be my nearly and Cosmic Slop by Funkadelic would be my wild card - a more stripped back lineup but with some sounds and ideas well ahead of rock and pop. Progressive Funk.
And Dark Side is only commercial because its Dark Side...its still - if you can detach yourself....a really weird album, with ideas up the wazoo and a real attempt to make a soundscape not done before. You cant - now that teens wear the tee who dont even know the record - criticise it for bein commercial. Its not We Cant Dance...
Sufficiently breathless! Passport debut lp. Capt beyond and a Doldinger
Captain approved. Cheers
Props for mentioning Badger. I have it on CD and I love it.
Comrade!
Well my list is gonna be similar to my *general* list on the squares.
5. Kayak - See See The Sun
4. Gentle Giant - In a Glass House
3. Nektar - Remember The Future
2. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
1. Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
Captain Beyond - Sufficiently Breathless
It's an album that that could fly under the radar in such a strong year!
Hmm, I have this and the debut on disc. Great vinyl slabs. Never considered them prog. I kind of think of Deep Purple, but with a bit of Class.
Good one!
Magma with M.D.K. indeed. Fantastic album. Probably my favorite prog album of '73.
M.D.K is amazing!!
Have you heard Kokkyou Junreika by
J. A. Seazer? If you like magma you will probably like it!!!
Great show as always, guys - sorry it's taken me a year to catch up with it. Just one little reservation: Hero and Heroine wasn't released until March 1974, but as it was recorded the previous November I guess it still qualifies as a 1973 record. My own choices:
1. The Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd
2. Flying Teapot - Gong
3. Brain Salad Surgery - ELP
4. Selling England By The Pound - Genesis
5. The Faust Tapes - Faust
Honorable mentions:
Atem - Tangerine Dream
For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night - Caravan
For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music
Chuck's encyclopedic knowledge never ceases to amaze me. I'm pretty sure that dude has heard literally every album ever recorded, and knows exactly who played on each and every one of them.
LOL! Thank you anyway. I knew many of the more popular albums were going to picked, I just wanted to go outside the box.
My Top 5 Prog of 1973:
5. Bachdenkel "Lemmngs"
4. Mike Oldfield "Tubular Bells"
3. Billy Cobham "Spectrum"

I got into Opeth from one of the SoT videos,so thanks guys, very informative.
Sometimes...I'd really like to have the SoT Forgotten Favorites series back for that reason...
I agree with you Wolf, loved that series too.
Hearing Dark Side described as a soothing, warm blanket makes me chuckle.

4. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds Of Fire
5. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

Strawbs - Bursting at the Seams
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
HM
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Agitation Free - 2nd
Caravan - For Girls Who Go Plump in the Night
Great stuff Terry!

2. Renaissance - Ashes Are Burning
3. Gentle Giant - In A Glass House

This could have been Prog’s peak year as there are many exceptional releases including undisputed classics that didn’t make the cut. Queen’s Debut would have been ranked #2 if one were to consider it Prog but I don’t.
All of my very top favorites (Dark Side, etc.) were mentioned, but for some honorables:
Styx II (I love A Day, Father OSA, and Lady)
ELO II

5) Mwandishi band - Sextant

@@lasercd7851 Have you heard Kokkyou Junreika?
Right on with Inside Mr. Golden. That's the album that converted me to progressive rock right there.
Money is overrated apart from guitar solo
Good stuff, Gentlemen, good stuff.
Thanks Mat

I often thought of 1973 as Rock's greatest year, let alone Progressive Rock. It seems that pretty much everyone put out either their very best or at least a truly excellent release that year. Great year for Fusion too! Just look at the titles listed by the panel here. One that may have been forgotten here is my favorite Weather Report album. Sweetnighter.
I always vibe with Ken and Chuck
“Camel” by Camel is one of my most favorite albums of all time.
Hello Michael, next to Music Inspired by the Snowgoose, Camel's debut is my favorite. Underrated in my opinion!
