Replacing My French Cleat Hand Tool Storage
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 сер 2024
- I gave up on my french cleat system for my hand tools. I thought it would be very useful having the ability to move everything around according to my needs but after I had made holders and placed them on the cleats they never needed moving. The holders would tend to fall off (as shown in the beginning) because they're not heavy enough.
This stopped me from making the rest of the holders for my tools and I've finally made the effort to make a whole new wall storage for them. I took a page out of Matthias Wandel's book and made this which allowed me to be more flexible in where I place things and not have everything situated along the rails of a cleat. I also thought I'd try magnets for holding tools. They were cheap and seems to be very simple to take and put back the tools.
I still love french cleats, just not for this application.

I had never considered putting the builders square at right angles to the mounting board ...until now. Very clever. Thanks for sharing.
No talking. Fast forward. Subscribed.
+Alfredo1987a Awesome! :D
Awesome video. First one of yours I've seen and couldn't have came at a better time. I'm moving and will be rebuilding by workshop in a new spot. This video has inspired a new way to think about tool organization and to do it on a flat surface BEFORE hanging up the tools. Such an easy but overlooked step. Thanks
Ditto on that idea...lay out the tools first...what do I really need to be out? the rest can be stored out of sight....nice!
Covering the magnets is a really cool idea. Looks so nice.
So nice to see a young man dedicated organized clever
I use a french cleat system. But I weight all the holders and I will often use simple velcro to stop them moving about. That stuff is very strong and easily removed if needed. I have never had any issues with holders falling off. I would never go back to the old way, a good french cleat system is so useful. But I know its personal taste really.
I've just started making my own workshop in my garage and when I was looking at my drill bits, files, screw drivers and rulers I immediately thought MAGNETS! I like the way to used them!
+Outbackbloke thanks! And good luck with your workshop!
Don't ever change/add any tools and you're all set! Alternatively, you could have added a 10 or so degree bevel to the underside of the cleats on the wall, which would enable to make a slide-in key lock piece to keep your related items from moving, and keep all the flexibility of a french cleat system!
Great use of space! I think as we all "live" more in our shops we're figuring out what works best for us. Really good solutions.
i love the sounds in fast forwarded videos.. I don't know why, but I just love it.
Clean simple access and approach to storing the tools.
I'm an old woodworker dude and I think you did a good job on this project.
+Bbendfender Thank you kind sir!
Great videos. I replaced most of my screwdrivers with a 10 in 1 screwdriver my electrician step son gave me for Christmas a few years ago. Now all the dozen or so screwdrivers are in a drawer that I very seldom open. The only regular screwdriver I may use, once in a while, is the short stubby Philips that is used for tight spaces.
Well done, I'm doing a hybrid of french cleats and this, I had the same issue with the cleats but figured combining them with magnets was an ideal solution.
Great there is no way I'm showing this video to my tools. I will never hear the end of it. We want one, we want one. Damm tools are never happy.
hahaha!
My tools are locked in a black box.
I like what you did here it shows some real skill in the design and execution. Thanks for posting it.
Peg board hooks have their problems and anything with the name "French" in it always gives me pause to think. You're use of magnets might work for me so I might try your system out. Thanks for taking the time to show the rest of the world how you did it. Nicely done.
Fun video to watch. Especially the table saw portions, hard not to freak out when it looks like you're ramming the wood through at the speed of light, but of course, video editing. Fun to watch it come together and I found I couldn't pull myself away from watching a project being done so quickly ;)
+Russ Schampers haha thanks! glad you like it :)
Some of these solutions assume that you will never buy or obtain another tool. A combination of magnets, permanent hooks and pegs along with an adjustable system, like French cleats might be more ideal. The problem with the cleats falling off when removing screwdrivers, chisels and the like can be dealt with by slotting the holes
That magnet idea is incredible. Awesome!! I also like the lock mechanism of the table saw fence.
Wow ! Your videos are so wow
I mean not the videos but what you do and what you show
Really happy to see this channel
+mcsk8rg Thank you very much!
Looks great, love what you did with the magnets. Also like how you laid it all out and mounted the brackets before putting the board up.
Nice use of magnets. It turned out really good. Awesome.
wow this is brilliant
So satisfying to watch bro. 👌🏽
This is brilliant. It inspired me to do a similar layout except I couldn't hide the magnets bc I didn't have a table saw or router to cut the grooves. It still came out nice though.
That is fantastic. Love it. I especially like the layout of your rulers and measuring, and how you've incorporated the set square and vernier calipers using different levels. I may have to steal those ideas ;)
I don't like overuse of magnets to hold tools. Part of my need for organization is that I'm getting forgetful. I'll put down a tool., and forget where I put it. If most of my commonly used tools have a very particular slot, or holder, or cubby, it helps me. It helps me to see whether that "holster" is empty. Compared to counting how many screwdrivers are usually stuck to that magnetic strip. I go so far as to make holders with holes or slots, and use blanks to block the unused openings. That way all slots should be occupied by a tool or a blank.
A simple solution would be to just drill a screw thru the cleat, they still can be removed later.
You're absolutely right, but let's face it... What man chooses the simple solution for his shop? ;-)
For my cleats I measured the distance between the top of a hanging cleat to the bottom of the next wall mounted cleat and then cut a small piece of wood the same thickness as my cleats that I can slide in after the cleat is in place which locks the cleat in place without any screws. I cut several of these for my lighter cleats that wanted to come off the wall when I lifted things out of them and haven't had that problem since.
It is okay. The only problem I can see is this is custom made to fit the tools you currently have. It is not infinitely adjustable. Regarding holders being fall off from French Cleat, I think it can easily resolved by installing it over a backing board instead of plain wall. You install the French Cleats on the backing board. On the backing board, you drill a small dowel hole above the cleats. You place the holders on the cleats, insert a wood dowel into the hole to prevent the holder from moving.
Works better and looks better too. French cleats are fashionable, but aren't suited for some things.
Really clever use of the magnets.
John Heisz Thanks John! Always appreciate your thoughts!
John Heisz
me too!
French cleats are good for heavier items but youtubers all tend to copy each other so they have been a little over used. I use a combination of a peg board and draper magnetic tool holders. they are simple and work better than any French cleats system for tools but as they are shop bought so they do not make for an interesting video.
Like it, especially the magnetic holder 👍
I just laid out my tools on the board and then ran in screws for them to hang on. The ones that couldn't hang, I built a quick rack out of angle sheetmetal and drilled holes in them for them to hang through. Your way just seems like a lot of work just for the same organization, looks nicer though.
+Russell Telker very true. This was a lot more work than actually needed to get the tools on the wall but I wanted to try it this way and get a cleaner look to it
I like except...Sticking Files on a magnet is not a good idea. It will magnetize them, which will cause metal shavings to cling to your files clogging them.
+THX 1138 although if he never uses them on anything but wood he should be ok for the most part
+THX 1138 I didn't realise it would magnetize them. Thanks for pointing that out. Luckily I don't use them on metal that often, and they are cheap enough to replace anyway
+Last Minute Thoughts They make magnetizing/demagnetizing tools. Or, if you have any magnets left, figure out which is the negative pole and rub the files over it.
i believe the same thx. Magnetize the lime is not a good idea. for the other side magnetize screwdriver is good idea to subject the screws.
however is good video and good idea
very nice. you took some time to build and put up but i think it's worth it.
Nice. Looks great. I like how you covered the magnets with wood.
CMR Woodworks | Chris McDowell Thanks! The magnets looked too ugly if I kept them exposed. And I guess it adds a bit of mystery with them hidden as well haha
Been streaming shop organization vids looking for inspiration for my garage wood-shop, and this one had fine ideas to ponder. Was thinking for a minute, "Mmmm, he went with curved edges on the outside - was that for style?" before realizing it was a fish-eye lens effect ;) Thanks for all the effort you put into the vid. It speaks well for you, and looks great against the other top videos I've watched.
hahaha the fish eye is quite deceiving isn't it? Thanks! Hope it gives you some ideas for your workshop!
Nice, tidy system. Thanks for the video.
A job well done! Great work.
This was amazing!!!! Very impressive!!!
he is definetly going pro
Love the magnetic blocks, great work
WELL DONE & GOOD LUCK
So much better! Hehe, pretty cool video :) I like the blocks of hidden magnets!
Get Hands Dirty Thanks! I wanted it to look as clean as possible so I hid the magnets and screwed everything from the other side
I really like what you've done here. The covered magnets are neat. I'm going to try that. Good job; good share. Thanks.
French cleats are terrific for hanging cabinets, but hand tool storage requires flexibility.
Interesting.
Pros: Organization, DIY magnetic is different, more improvement from original design
Cons: Ferrite Magnets will rust over time, magnetizing certain tools isn't ideal, $15 box of screws vs cost of new project.
As some of the comments below mentioned about properly fastening the cleats... being said, looks like the right amount of minimum time was spent on a good solution.
Better magnets shouldve been chosen, however magnetizing tools isnt much of an issue for woodworking really.
really good job
Tengo un espacio tan pequeño que No me decido si french cleat o esta opción que al parecer me daría mucho mas espacio!
Awesome!
French cleats are really useful because the system is modular... this looks nice but is impractical if, like me, you are always acquiring more tools
Subscribed I did your style and can tell you enjoy just working and learning as you go. Take it easy
+GroovemasterOdin Thank you very much! :)
The biggest problem in my opinion with this setup is that its not mobile. With french cleat system you can move tool holders anywhere to different walls or move them around to make room for other things, or make changes.
wow awesome stuff
Very nice!
Muy bonito, muy bonito...
si muy bien
Wow. Two spirited thumbs up!!!!!!
+dwayne cad guy Haha thank you very much!
so practical..good job--
looks good
great idea, I'm just starting out and really like this :)
LOL, love the high speed sounds, hilarious! :)
Pretty good!
good effort dude
Hey Dufus, you could have saved yourself a world of trouble if you just put a small screw into the cleat to hold it in place
very smart
Why not just embed the magnets in the french cleats since you already had that system? This would prevent it from jumping off the track by magnetically locking the french cleats in without losing the adaptability of the french cleats. Just a thought.
I was also thinking a small piece of velcro might work.
Yep, being using velcro for exactly this for years. I love my french cleat.
Eh, the sounds and speed of the video reminded me of the 70's Sesame Street, especially at the end, when the stop-motion began and the board started "spontaneously" filling up on equipment. they used to do a lot of those back then.
Hay maşallah çok güzel olmuş tebrikler elinize emeğinize sağlık
Aplausos, y de pie.
Harbor Freight sell 12” long magnet block just for this.
excelente amigo bien organizado!!
Well done :)
Nice
I'm still using peg board and hooks, but can see the utility of this setup. Thanks!
(Also, mind putting a link to where you bought those magnets?)
interesting concept 👀 and design 📐of your toolboard🔧🔨🔪✂
thank you for the time ⏳and the effort 💪you've invested 💰to show us 👀 how to use it wisely 🍭
Inventive and something I will mimic. However what if you need to change position...rear screwing means you have to remove entire board!
+Colin M Thanks. I did think about that but I really thought it through with the placement of each tool. That was the reason for a french cleat system at the start, so I could move tools around but I found once I had it on the cleat I never moved it, hence why I changed it to this.
+Last Minute Thoughts fair enough. Why we all have different needs! Have a good day.
Nicely done. Took awhile right, but will be more useful as (you said) they don't move on the wall much anyway. HF sells magnet strips that are very strong and they are cheap. But I think you bought your smaller magnet blocks (maybe from HF also) so that you could adjust the length to meet your needs? Like how you enclosed them in wood! BTW, the spot for the pliers is empty - haha.
MRrwmac Cheers. Haha oh you noticed... haha, I couldn't think of a good way to hold them so I just left them out for now. I really just wanted to get it on the wall because it was taking too long. I left out a few other things as well so I will try add them in the future. What is HF?
+LastMinuteThoughts Harbor Freight.
MRrwmac Oh right! There is no Harbor Freight here in New Zealand. Not that I know of anyway
Ótimo vídeo 👏🏼
thats awesome
nice
Since you already had the French cleat system, I wonder if it would of been a good idea to outfit the cleat and wall mount with magnets? Don’t know just a thought.
genius
спасибо чувак за видео!!!!!
Awesome
Somebody has way to much time on their hands. Nice.
they fell off not because things were too heavy but because they werent secured properly
.. could've put a few t-nuts in cleats for light tools.
Please make some more videos man!
+mmovie Just uploaded a new one! appreciate your interest in my videos :D
+Last Minute Thoughts Timing! haha, nice

Wow great video and great idea with the magnets. Where can I get some?
How is the quality of these screwdrivers? There are some available in germany, I don´t know from which brand, they look exactly the same, but they are not for a long term usage.
I wish you gone start to do something in your shop .Buy some woodsmith plan ...
looks great. which chisels are you using?
Быстро. Без смысленно. Задорно.
Wouldn't it have been easier to do your magnet trick, on a french cleat, maintaining the ability to move and refactor based on tool changes?
Have you've added some steel angle to the table saw to stop it bowing or were you having trouble keeping the fence square?
+Xander054 its an aluminium angle to square up the fence
+Last Minute Thoughts Nice, I thought that's what you had done. Did you have to shim out one side because it was off? You'll have to do a video with all these clever mods :) although that may involve talking and I see that's not your style!
+Xander054 Yeah It was off by just a bit so I had to tweak it just a little. Haha, maybe one day I'll talk in my videos
LOL, so funny when the solution is made sooooo complicated. Try some Kaizen foam.
Amazing improvement for your shop! How did you clamp the box to the sheet of plywood?
Capital Design thanks! you mean the compartment box? There are those keyholes for screws at the back so put some screws into the plywood and the box sits on those
It really looks good, but it's not very expandable. Any time you add a tool, you'll have to change something, rather than already having a spot for a holder like with the French cleat system.
+42lookc I'm hoping I won't need to expand it that much haha. there is a bit of free space that I will eventually fill and just screw to the plywood. But yes, you're right
