Off the coast of South Taranaki in New Zealand there is a genetically distinct population of around 718 blue whales, they will be around there for a while at least .
There is something regarding the sheer magnitude of everything about the blue whale, its size, its vocal range, its daily diet, that brings this feeling of child like wonder in me. They are indescribably beautiful.
What fascinates me about the blue whale is that it lived through the pre historic ages and still survives today as the largest animal to have ever existed. And incredibly majestic animal 🐋
The largest animal ever recorded sounds better. He just don't know everything that lived in the past... only a fraction of them have been preserved by fossilization
You're underestimating the size of the incredible ocean in comparison to the size of this little animal. Even if anyone lived for 110 years, they'd still never be able to finish touring the entire ocean. They go boat watching for a hobby, they can sleep & they call each other from 500 miles away to chill with their cousins.
Who was that first person who thought, "hmm, let me check the ginormous whale's ear for clues to its age"?! I am just curious about the thought process behind it.
After butchering numerous blue whales I'm sure the gigantic clumps of wax in their ears were pause for examination. People are curious. They wondered, why so much ear wax? Why so many layers? Looks like tree rings. *LIGHT BULB EXPLOSION*
Ears are extremely interesting to learn about. They're just basically convert vibrations into stimuli your brain can understand. We don't even really know what we're hearing either a lot of it is made up. We also hear at a delay, I can't remember the exact timing, but my teacher explained it as drummers and musicians actually have to play a step ahead of sound to keep in beat. Judging by the cochlea(hearing) and vestibule(balance) it looks like balance was around first in many mammals and animals, but the ability to hear was evolved differently. Some backpacking the same evolution from their balancing organ and others finding completely new ways to detect vibrations and sound.
I went on a dolphin search a few days ago and instead of seeing dolphins we saw 3 of these guys one of them being a juvenile and it was the most amazing experience
Think about it. There are probably times when there population numbers drop, but then they become slightly harder for predators to find, allowing their population numbers to go back up to normal. It's nearly impossible to make them go extinct. They will be aound until the end of times like roaches and mosquitoes.
yeah whales eat alot, but compared to how vast the ocean is and how many nutrients and places there is for krill to grow, whales barely make a dent in krill population
