- About This Talk
When Anis Mojgani challenges his audience to "come closer, come into this," he's not asking them to move closer to the stage; he's asking them to move more resolutely into their own lives. "Your smiles are simply signs of how sacred your life actually is, so step into it."
About This Speaker
Anis Mojgani grew up in New Orleans, the son of an Irani father and an African-American mother. His high-flying, supremely optimistic poems have won him two National Poetry Slam championships and top honors at the World Cup Poetry Slam. He is the author of three poetry collections, Over the Anvil We Stretch, National Book Award nominee The Feather Room and the newly published Songs From Under the River.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
I was at this event. Anis was absolutely incredible. His words were probably the most memorable aspect of the TedxAtlanta event. For me, at least.
I have heard both versions and think both are valid for different reasons. One thing I love about his poetry is that it seems his poems are never exactly the same. He edits and revises over time, then maybe reverts to a previous version; I love that every piece is a living, breathing thing. His words are never static. It is a thing of beauty... which to me is what DOES make him "more."
"Art wasn't supposed to look nice; it was supposed to make you feel something.” Eleanor and Park; These collections by Mr. Mojgani were art dropping!
I love how he is dancing with his words, how his voice changes, his style and way of writing. I was inspired to write.
I love this guy.He makes makes me smile! He makes me feel like ME..
I've seen him live, and this TEDx performance is almost as mesmerizing. Truly amazing person & poet.
Each time I hear his words, its as if they move me more then the last. Great job Anis.
I have seen him in person and you can't take your eyes off of him as he speaks.
this is one of the most amazing guys i've ever seen... it was a privilege to be in his presence.
I am so moved by this. I can't stop watching it. He is incredible and inspired my new found love for poetry. He has an absolutely beautiful soul. Keep doing what you do!(:

very good poems Anis Mojgani is a very good poet.
here is one of may poems
None of this matters
None of my words matter if the dust is not given breath
Nothing I do matters if the ground is still hungry
Saying I appreciate myself is selfishness when I ridicule the dust
If I do not care for the dust and the earth then I should not exist
I am told to shake the dust off my body to pick myself up and hurry.
Yet what have I become if I only repeat the day and night in everything I do.
The dust may have been shaken but I am still not awake
And none of this matters if the dust is not allowed to breath.

So beautiful poetry...
just great...
I can't believe I missed this I live in Atlanta
his hair puff is epic
Which one? Maybe He is just an incredible individual with an amazing talent that we can all respect? I don't believe in God myself but i must respect the way He speaks of Him.
this man fucking rocks
where are the expletives? why is this watered down? :(
Expletives are only useful to somebody who is skilled enough to not need them. If he needs them to keep his words from being watered down, then he needs to find better words.
the usual piece with the expletives sounds more legit to me. this is like a PG version
As a teacher who wants to share this with 15-year-olds, I'm pretty happy about it. You can find the other versions on here just fine.
***** i think your students would have captured this more in it's original state. It would mean something more to them because it better represents them in our time and space.
Tee Jay maybe you are okay with a teacher playing curse-word laden poems for kids, but the state and about 90 percent of the parents would not be okay with it. I do agree with your estimation of the poetic value and encourage my students to watch his other stuff-and usually the kids who need/want it, go get it. I start them with Anis' performance at the Seattle grand slam, starting the video just after he says "rock the fuck out"
14:12 Greedy corporate leaders who think they can get rich at everyone's expense. This is for you. Listen to these words. Second chances are very hard to get. You might not want to get left behind. It's in your best interest to update your lexicon.
This is me.
Really interesting to see how he cleaned these poems up...haha
I don't drink fight or cuss.
Tyler Campbell :/
Shake the fucking dust.
honestly? prefer all the performances from years passed. Don't change your expletives (or phrases) for calming words.you're more than that.
seriously...probably 500+ of these views are from me. lol.
Why am I seeing this after 5yrs??... Amazing poetry 👎
