Shadow of Rome was one of the best PS2 games few people I know have heard of. You played as a Gladiator in the arena for most of the game. It was all about the blood sport and appeasing the crowd by cheering after doing something new. New things included cutting off one arm, cutting off both, cutting off the head, cutting them in half, or my favorite cutting both arms off and then in half. You could throw heads into the crowd which they loved you for. Seriously a phenomenal game. But, and there it a but. All that sweet combat was punctuated by infrequent sneaking missions.
SSX Tricky was an amazing Game from the soundtrack, getting higher and lower. When you're doing an Uber trick to the Uber tricks themselves. It's all in all, just super fun
For my money it has to be Def Jam FFNY. It had incredibly deep fighting mechanics, an incredible soundtrack, amazing visuals for the time, an engrossing story. I feel like it really goes underrated and deserves a spot as one of the greatest fighting games of all time.
Im jealous. Who thought Def Jam FFNY would be the last great of its type... i mean come on. I loved it all. The combat, cheesey story and most of all, customisation and co-op. I had a whole house of players growing up. Like 5 of us!! 🎉🎉🎉
Dunno if it has to be PS2 exclusives but "Urban Chaos : Riot Response", an amazing FPS that pushed the PS2 beyond what I thought was possible and ran smooth as. Utterly brutal game that encouraged you to replay and replay to get the medals and unlock more weapons, an idea not uncommon now but I don't remember seeing before (at least for a single player game)
Shadow Hearts was an amazing JRPG with a unique combat system in the Judgement Ring. Its 'real world' setting with dark monsters and awesome characters made it a joy to play.
Test drive Eve of Destruction was one of the best games for the PS2 in my eyes. The variations of demolition racing in that game coupled with the graphics that it had, and extremely tight controls made it one really good game to play both solo and with a friend.
I'd also mention: Elex, Steelrising, Dune 2000, Hellpoint, Armies of Exigo, War Front: Turning Point, ParaWorld, Silverfall, Vampyr Of Orcs and Men, LotR: War of the Ring, Viking: Battle for Asgard, LotR: War in the North, Remember Me.
The PS2 is the bestselling console of all time with a huge library of games. Here are but a few of my favourites: Ghost Recon Jungle Storm, Tony Hawk's Underground 2, Dynasty Warriors 4 and Genji.
Dredd Vs Death & the Kane and Lynch games are brilliant. The videogame equivalent to popcorn cinema. It's nae going to earn art wards but it's a great game that's aware that they're games.
Shadow Hearts Covenant should be on this list as it didn't review particularly well but had an outstanding story, quirky characters and brilliant turn-based combat. I still tell people Covenant's ending may be the most tragic story in any video game.
Best PS2 game, was one of the best games across consoles for that generation. Tony Hawk's Underground. Such a great change in the game by making it a story-based skateboarding game.
My all time favorite ps2 game was Castlevania: curse of darkness. The music was fantastic, isaac was a frustrating yet fulfilling nemesis, the innocent devil evolution tree using crystals obtained from different weapons was great. And the weapon crafting system itself was incredibly vast and fun for it's time, not to mention all the fun easter eggs involved in it's multiple levels.
Respect some of the out there takes that we don't typically see. I remember playing knack the first time, I got it for free with the system and didn't expect much and was happily surprised
you may say whatever you want, Devil May Cry 2, Silent Hill 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, but there's only one that made you cry, laugh, cheer, ponder and wait 15 years for a sequel and 20 years to buy it again on PC last week: Kingdom Hearts 2
PS2 had some good ones but Tekken Tag, Everquest Online Adventures, Dynasty Warriors 3 and Syphon Filter The Omega Strain were some of my favorites. I really wish they would remake Syphon Filter The Omega Strain for current gen. The 4 player online co-op was a lot of fun.
Predator Concrete Jungle. There was quite a few Alien games and AVP games back in the day but being a big Predator fan this was a rare and big find for myself.
For best PS2 game, I nominate Champions: Return to Arms. With all the character customization options, expansive weapon choices and the way you can use the different classes work friends to absolutely wreck enemies, it gave unlimited fun! Then there's the way the water reacted - far ahead of it's time.
The best PS2 game IMO was Drakan: The Ancient's Gates. I watched my stepdad play it when it first came out and I finally got my hands on a copy to play it for myself a few years ago. I was not disappointed. Of course the graphics were potato quality, but the stories within were worth it, the world was rich and explorable (to an extent), and this was in the age of cheat codes so I could give myself all the money I wanted to buy those sweet swords! A highly underrated gem, I really wish they would port it over to the PS store.
Gauntlet. Gauntlet Dark Legacy is Mankind’s single greatest invention of all time, and the fact that we don’t have a modern remaster or port is a literal violation of the Geneva Convention.
How did Godhand not make this list? IGN absolutely savaged the game because the reviewer was feeling particularly unprofessional that day. a 3/10 that forever ruined its reputation and contributed to tanking its sales.
The best PS2 game? Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria. The game is just beautiful. It brought bags platforming puzzling and JRPG together in one game. The soundtrack hauntingly beautiful. The system of battles always engaging. The optional aftergame content is there if you want the challenge. It is really unique in that it’s the Valkyrie Profile on the PS2. The only other game to come close to this is Radiata Stories.
Stop making me choose among my favorite children. Persona 3 and 4: I replay these games at least 4 times. The plot...the cast. It feels like coming home every time i do a replay. ❤❤❤❤
Shadow Hearts 1 & 2 are 2 of my favorite PS2 games. The story is great, and the combat ahead of its time they really need to make remakes of the and Shadow Hearts 3. Great games need more like them.
Herdy gerdy is legitimately one of the most underrated ps2 games & say it with me... OF ALL TIME. Do the world a favour by bringing it to their attention in next week's list
I think the greatest games on play station 2 have to be SSX Tricky and Marvel ultimate alliance and Dragon Ball z Budokai 3 they were my favourite games I played back when I had a play station 2 also Jak and daxter
My top 5 PS2 games Hulk : Ultimate Destruction (PROTOTYPE should have been...) PSY-Ops (People hated this, I found it fun GRADIUS V R-Type Final Pro Pinball TimeShock! (These were PS1 games but got rereleased on PS2 as a 3 in one pinball game)
Greatest PS2 game? Too difficult to narrow down. Just choose one: Devil May Cry God of War Kingdom Hearts Shadow of the Colossus Twisted Metal: Black Guitar Hero III GTA: Vice City Bloodrayne DDR Extreme 2 GrimGrimoire
I wish Hunter the Reckoning was loved more cause it has to be one of the best world of darkness games and showcased writing and co-op can truly carry awkward gameplay.
I gotta disagree with some of your video. Friday the 13th was beyond terrible, I should not have to wait two years for a game to just get alright. Buying That game was my biggest regret ever gamewise. I also remember it being 40 bucks. I couldn’t even get into a game for the first 2 1/2 weeks because of their server issues. Also alien Isolation wasn’t rated bad. It was averaged around an 80 on metacritic. That’s not a bad score in the least. Maybe it was a bit low for as good as the game was but it wasn’t badly reviewed at all.
@@RossLawlietwhat you choose to forget though is home many games back then were still released broken. Plenty of games came out with broken features or overpowered cheap enemies and weapons etc etc and nothing could be done about it. Pros and cons to both eras.
My favorite video game ever: DEADLY PREMONITION 🤷🏻♂️ I’m fully aware of the things it lacked or did wrong, but it is and will be my all time favorite video game. Having said that, I haven’t played Deadly Premonition 2 yet… it actually looks really, really bad and not that funny/weird/“scary”/fun as the first. Maybe I’m misjudging it 🤔
While I'll agree other racing games around Air Ride were good, I've never missed them but I think about Kirby Air Ride probably at least once a week to today.
Oh man... Trying to think. There were so many good games for the PS2. Back in that time, we didn't think the graphics would get any better. Let me think, what was a game I constantly bought. I really liked DMC 3, but there's nothing really special about that one. Gameplay handles well though. I think it would have to be Mortal Kombat Armageddon. I could create anyone I wanted, and get to fight against all Kombat characters with them. The story wasn't all that great, but gameplay wise, you had everything. Except personal fatalities.
Elite Dangerous Odyssey (PC). Admittedly, it was an absolute mess upon release and at the time the poor reviews were deserved. A few years later the game has vastly improved but the reviews never recovered. Imo... it's STILL the most in depth and fleshed out VR game on the market.
The best PS2 game has to go to Run Like Hell: Hunt or be Hunted it was Dead Space before Dead Space the game came out in 02 Cold Fear came out 05 and the soundtack is sooo good i mean how can you go wrong with Breaking Benjamin and it was before anyone heard of them it had four tracks off their debut album and they are Shallow Bay, Home, Water and their hit song Polyamorous which they used game footage for the music video

Dark Cloud 2 was one of the best for games on the ps2. It had weapon customization, city building, combat mechs, and even a fun golf minigame.
Dark Chronicle for people outside the US
I spend over 100+ hours in that game. Love it.
Strongly agreed
Too true. Both Dark Cloud games deserve a remaster.

Interesting fact, one of the writers for Alien Isolation was Dan Abnett. If you know, you know. And Jules will certainly know.
It's not often I see his name without "& Andy Lanning."
For my money it has to be Def Jam FFNY. It had incredibly deep fighting mechanics, an incredible soundtrack, amazing visuals for the time, an engrossing story. I feel like it really goes underrated and deserves a spot as one of the greatest fighting games of all time.
