  • LTX1050KW checking and adding oil to your hydrostatic transmission.
    My battery box is under the seat. Remove battery and the box pulls right out.
    Find the vent cap as pictured in video. It takes a little prying to get it out. Be careful not to damage the plug.
    Clean the area well before removing the vent plug in order to keep debris out of trans.
    You'll need something to check the oil level. If oil is needed be patient as it bubbles in pretty slow.
    Fill to about 1/4 inch below top of edge of fill hole.
    replace vent cap with a solid push. If you needed to add oil like I did be sure to drive it in reverse for a minute to equally distribute the oil between reverse and forward drive.
    Hope this video helped. Any questions just give me a shout.

    For those folks looking to CHANGE the transaxle fluid it’s best to remove the transaxle from the mover. It’s only 6 bolts, two levers secured by cotter pins and one spring assembly. This video shows filling the fluid through the breather valve not the fill plug. The K46 requires a specific fluid level that can not be achieved using the breather valve. The fill port is underneath the cooling fan and removal of that fan is a SOB. If you remove the transaxle from the mower you will see a 22mm nut under the fan to hold the fan while you remove the top bolt. The 22mm nut can’t be accessed with the trans in the mower. Also there is no drain port so the trans needs to be removed from the mower so you can flip it upside down for the fluid to drain by gravity via the fill port. It takes a few hours to do it but it’s really not as hard as you may think.

    thanks for posting this! I saw several other vids where the owner dropped the trans. This looks quick and easy! I look forward to trying this.

    That is the vent plug. The fill plug is under the fan blades

    And what oil did you use? Mentioning it would have made the video more helpful.

    The top of the cap broke off on mine trying to get it off but, the opening was just big enough to get a funnel into it. To make a new cap, I bought a wine bottle cork with a wooden top, shaved down the cork so it fit into the hole, and the wooden top of the cork sealed against the top of the fill hole. I ran the mower around my yard for ten minutes, no splash out of fluid, no leaks.

      Steve I like your inginuity however, this could become a problem longterm. That Cap is called a VENT CAP. Yeah and many do use it to replace fluid with pump and-or top off fluid to extend tranny life. Vent Cap has two pieces which are attached. Keeps rain out but is made to vent and must breath. If ya still have them put the pieces back together or buy a replacement Vent cap unless your wine bottle design Vents.

      Too cheap to buy a little cap that would probably cost under $10? I bet you the bottle of wine you bought to use the cork from cost more than $10

    I acquired a beat up used 2166, who knows when the hydro fluid was ever changed. I need to get a look under there at some point.

      Any fully synthetic 20W50 or 15W50 motorcycle oil is acceptable. Motorcycle oil because it has additives needed to keep wet clutches clean.

      Some people will use 15-50 oil since it is easier to find. Specs are 20-50 oil.

    Is there a transmission filter on the LTX 1050 that needs changed also?

    • @scottp2462
      @scottp2462 10 місяців тому +1

      Yes there is a internal filter. To access the filter you need to remove the bottom of the transaxle. It’s called splitting the case. There is no pre-made gasket. It uses gasket sealant and it’s a mess of a job. Once the case is split you need to remove all and I mean ALL of the old sealant. The bottom cover isn’t too bad but the transaxle case that houses the pumps and gears must remain free of contamination including small pieces of the gasket sealant you are trying to remove. Honestly I don’t think it’s worth the effort and risk of contamination. If you choose to open the case the filter is easily identifiable and it also holds an additional magnet that you can clean. Putting it back together you will need to follow sealant application to the letter or the pumps won’t build pressure and you’ll also need to torque the two parts of the case to manufacturer specifications.

    Did your trans make noise before you added fluid? Mine whines for a minute before I cut. I was wondering if I’m low. I have no leaks so I’ll assume mines low.

    Where’s the drain ?

    • @scottp2462
      @scottp2462 10 місяців тому +2

      There is no drain. To replace the fluid you need to pull the transaxle and pop the fill cap off, roll it upside down and gravity drain it overnight. You can’t properly do a fluid replacement with the transaxle in the mower as shown in the video. It requires a specific fluid level and no way to actually see the level of the fluid through the battery compartment.
