    My DSL40 came to me with a G12t75. After a few months, I put in a Vintage 30. Still, about a month later, I put in a Creamback G12M65 and it was a HUGE improvement. The DSL+Creamback combination is exactly the tone that I've always wanted. I actually sold off all my effects. Pure Organic Marshall tone is all I need!!

    Pefect Amp! Sound is amazing and the tonal range is great! Get the one with the free Creamback upgrade from Sweetwater, huge difference in warmth.

      Marshalls are pretty much my favorite. I think the DSL line is outstanding. I'm about to buy one this week. I love that they're hot rodded right out of the box and have that far more natural gain we've come to expect from Marshalls. I can't STAND Boogies and all that 6L6 doom metal crap. I want a classic rock sound.

    I'm kind of a "cork sniffer" when it comes to amps but I tried one of these with the stock speaker yesterday at Guitar Center and have to say it sounded EXCELLENT!!

    This is the best sounding amp I have checked out on UA-cam thus far. Very classic not a lot of noise, distortion is clean not fuzzy like Randall although Randall does have great solid state amps.

    Just ordered mine about an hour or so ago! My sales engineer Cassie O'Hanlon is great to deal with and let me know that while Sweetwater is waiting for the batch to arrive, the cyber deal currently going on is still good and gave me a timeframe for arrival. Looking forward to the DSL, Sweetwater and that bag of candy! Keep rockin!

    I bought this amp for the clean channel. Ppl think I'm crazy because I like marshall clean better than fender. fender cleans have no...I dont know how put it other than air or richness around the notes. The only fender I have owned so far that comes close is a bassman. I have the dsl 15 and 40. love them!

      Should I get the 15 or 40? Also I play a lot of 80's thrash metal like Metallica but also would love an amp that's good for a bunch of different genres. I'm kinda leaning towards the 40 since the 15 is only $100 cheaper

    I was one of these guitarist who thought a Tube Marshall was the only way to go that all changed in 2009 when i was introduced to a Marshall MG 100FX..put it this way i haven't used a Tube Amp of any kind in over 9 years its been the Marshall MG 100FX ever since..a Amazing Amplifier it produces everything a Tube Amp does and More alao much more reliable than any Tube Amp just over 9 years of heavy use and my Marshall MG 100FX hasn't failed me not once..how many can say that about a Tube Amp?..not one can say that..Marshall MG 100FX simply Brilliant!

    The creamback M65 sounds like it was made for this amp . I was not that impressed with that speaker in other amps as I thought it was kind of dark and a little loose but in a brighter amp like DSl it's perfect. I have the M65 in a DSL40 CR and it eliminated all of the fizz and gave it some extra warmth it was lacking without the amp losing any clarity. It also made the red channel much more usable and it made the amp sound more Marshall for lack of a better description. Definitely more vintage sounding then with the V type. Lots of people like the V type but I can't get along with it. It sounds like it's trying to be a greenback and a V30 rolled into one but the greenback does the greenback thing way better and the V30 does the V30 thing way better and speaking of the V30. Installing a creamback M65 into the DSL 40 and pairing it with a 1 by 12 closed back with a V30 is an amazing speaker combo and probably the most versatile combo I have used. The upper mids of the V30 combine with the lower mids of the creamback 65 for a very balanced full and smooth tome with just the right amount of bite . The creamback is a little scooped in the upper mids but has a spike in the lower mids . The V30 is a bit scooped in the low mids but has a huge upper mid spike and when combined together the low mids become huge but the upper mida get balanced out the upper mids are still huge but the more balanced tone of the speaker combo makes the upper mids less spikey sounding. The low mids kick you rigjt in the chest .
    The versatility is amazing. That combo can nail vintage tones and modern tones with the rigjt settings and for vintage tones you can hear Paul Kossoff 1970 live Jimmy page and all the world's a stage era Alex lifeson.

    In the opening he has that "puppy doggie face", he's feeling it! The mighty Marshall Roar!

    • @PeterDad60
      @PeterDad60 7 років тому

      BTW Great amp, I just received mine yesterday DSL40CST. The clean tones are thick and sound better to my ears than my Fender's. The OD2 with the tone shift button pushed in is where the Marshall Roar lives! No need for distortion pedals, no need for any pedals. Yes I have read some people complaining about the loud gain hiss in that setting at idle. Dig it man, if you wan't the Marshall Roar you play loud. You need the "Gain"! You won't hear the hiss except at rest. Do not filter this tone with a noise gate.
      Nothing sounds as good as a Marshall Tube amplifier to my ears. Inspirational tones!
      I read the manual. The internal Creamback G15M is a 16 ohm speaker, plugged into the 16 ohm output. There are two 8 ohm outputs right next to that one. The manual say's the internal speaker defeats the other outputs. Importantly the other outputs even though they are each labeled 8 oms, you are supposed to use only one 8 ohm speaker. Or, two 16 ohm speakers, one plugged into each of the 8 ohm outputs for a total impedance of 8 ohms. I pulled the internal 16 ohm speaker's jack and inserted it into the closest 8 ohm output. Then I inserted a cable from an external 16 ohm 12" speaker cab. into the remaining (labeled 8 ohm) speaker output for a total of two 16 ohm speakers which is an 8 ohm total impedance. Twice as many speakers and an even fuller sound than a single 12" speaker.
      Here is a direct quote from page 3 of the Marshall DSL40CST owners manual.
      "Loudspeaker Outputs.
      The DSL40C features three outputs, a dedicated 16 ohm output and two 8 ohm outputs.
      The DSL40C must not be run at an impedance less than 8 ohms.
      16 Ohm Speaker output:
      For the connection of a 16 ohm speaker cabinet. It should be noted that when this Speaker Output is in use the remaining Speaker Outputs are not operational.
      8 Ohm Speaker Outputs:
      For use when the total impedance of the speaker cabinet(s) being used is 8 ohms. That is, when using either 1 x 8 ohm cab or 2 x 16 ohm cabs."
      The Marshall DSL40C(ST) can be used as a "Head" and you can run two Marshall 1960 cabs at a selected 16 oms each using both of the 8 ohm outputs. Or one 1960 cab in 8 ohm stereo using two cables from the DSL40C. That would be using the two outputs labelled 8 ohms and the selector switch on the cab set to "stereo". That is great news. This is a loud and powerful 40 watt EL34 Tube amplifier using 4 ECC83 (12AX7) preamp tubes which are rated at 100% gain, as well as the two 25 watt EL34's running in Class A/B, 450 plate voltage, biased at 38.8 mA. each. There are included two bias pot's so with a multimeter you can replace the tubes and do the bias at home. The chassis comes out fairly easily to facilitate that. You can bias cool, normal or hot all according to your preference, unlike those Chinese auto baising amps.
      The DSL40C(ST) is made in Vieytnam under strict English Marshall standards so no worries. Sweetwater has a 2 year warrantee. I purchased mine from Joseph Secu at Sweetwater. He's a nice, attentive, knowledge and patient Sweetwater Sales Engineer at 1 (800) 222- 4700 ext. 1232.
      BTW I really like the Celestion Creamback G15M 65 watt, 16 ohm 12" speaker.
      These DSL40C are the best of (all) worlds, in stock form it's a single 12" speaker cab, that can run it's own internal 16 ohm speaker as well as a separate 12" 16 ohm speaker cab or two 16 ohm 4 x1 2 Marshall 1960 cab's or one 1960 in stereo. It is loud enough to eventually cause hearing damage if you are not careful. Do not play all day every day at full volume or you may indeed become another Pete Townsend or Beethoven as in = a deaf musician!
      -Peter

    I know this is a two years old video but since you guys are the only ones selling the dsl40c with the creamback. it would be good to hear both 70/80 and creamback just for reference. it would definitely help to decide which tone is "the right one".

    • @sweetwater
      @sweetwater  4 роки тому

      Thanks for reaching out! The DSL40CST was a Sweetwater mod of the DSL40C that we did for a limited time. We swapped out the Seventy 80 speaker for a Celestion Creamback G12M, which is a little beefier in the low-mid range. The DSL40C was discontinued and the current model is the DSL40CR which has a Celestion V-Type speaker which seems to have a little more in the mid-range:

    Just got mine , just be wary of the reverb on this amp when dimed is barley noticeable and non existent on the lead channels. It their on the Clean channel but faint. Just like everyone else I thought it was just mine but found out it's just the way it is. But overall it's a excellent amp for the money.

      @gmlasam 9 років тому

      Just got mine today and it sounds great! The upgraded Celestion Creamback is a perfect match with this amp. I also agree the reverb is very subtle on this amp even when the reverb control is at full. Nevertheless, it's a fantastic sounding amp. Besides, Marshall is not known for their reverbs, that would be Fender.

    • @Chilinoploppy

      +crushproof 803 I'm still torn between the two witch I truly prefer. My AC30 witch I also own has some great subtle spring reverb and adding my Catalinbread Spring reverb pedal in front of that now I get that reverb tone I've been looking for.

    • @Chilinoploppy

      +crushproof 803 it has a small 1, want to say 2 spring tank maybe 12" length. There is plenty for a large 3 spring tank. It's a cheap and easy upgrade but haven't felt the need to do so since I already own the CB spring reverb pedal.

      Hello, Bâte Alin-AB! These are great amps, but they're optimized for electric guitar and will have natural tendencies to break up and distort based on a number of factors. You can certainly use it with a keyboard, if you wish. But if you want to maintain your keyboard's tones and patches, something a little more neutral like a PA speaker or a keyboard/drum amp would be quite a bit better for you. Thanks for the interest!

      It would be fine for AIC Jerry use to play Marshalls (now with Friedman aka the modern Marshall) Mastadon? You would have to hit it with some type of distortion pedal . Marshall nails the 70s 80s rock imo

      Michael Collings
      Awesome! I'm thinking about ordering the Marshall DSL40cst sometime today.
      My assessment of the amp is that it can get me anywhere from Zeppelin, old Aerosmith, and AC/DC to Facelift and Dirt AIC, older Metallica and probably Opiate and Undertow Tool. I've got a TS9 and Wampler Tumnus Deluxe so it should be able to get those heavier tones.
      Whenever my Motor City Afwayu pickups arrive I think I'll be pretty close to the Cantrell tone.
      I wasn't quite sure what to expect as far as it being able to do heavier tones, but it seems it can get there, just not the modern Ola Englund Keith Merrow metal tones. I like some modern metal, but I'm not a modern metal player.
      I thought about pulling the trigger on a Friedman Runt, but at the end of the day I feel like the Marshall can get me where I need to go just fine. I like how Sweetwater includes the Creamback speaker and down the road, I may swap out the EL34 power tubes for KT77s but I may enjoy the amp as it is, so I'll have to wait and see.
      Thanks for taking the time to share your insights!

    im absolutely gonna help u guys. dont buy an extension cab for this or any amp for that mattet. buy a sure sm57 mic and a boom stand and a powered speaker and mic the amp thru that and put a tc Helicon hardtune correction vocal pedal and a adaptive dynamic tone pedal in the signal chain of the mic and power speaker. way more vesatile killer tones from micing the amp with pedals for very musical effects. its the most awesone thing ever. i sold my 412 cab i wad running off my dsl40 until i out of curiousity ised my singing rig to just mic the one 12 inch in the amp itself. man its so dam awesome. the dam amp is super loud u dont need a cab. its better to put an ew in the loop and just bump the bass lever up a bit and it will sound like from 100 soldiers marching to 1000 soldiers marching huge. so fellow tone freaks. their it is. layed out 4 u. also their is no need to swap the celestion 70 80. put a boss ge 7 ew in the loop and beat the speaker to death with all kinda diff settings. it will break in very bice. it is an awesome speaker. so their u go. tube screamer up front. eq and delay in the loop and mic it instead of use a cab. u will never regret it.

      Nirond I use it in my townhouse. You can get some pretty good tones at lower volume.

    • @Spartanm333
      @Spartanm333 7 років тому

      We use it in a domestic bedroom, only had the odd neighbour complaint. As the video suggests it has a switch on back to cut the output by half, whilst still giving you the same grunt (rather than lowering the volume and losing tone). That switch works well enough although you wont be able to crank it up to 10 like Clapton in the Bluesbreakers without shattering the windows - its awesomely loud even on half power - I think Clapton's original Marshall was only 15 / 20 W which is probably why he got away with that maxing out the pots.

    how you set this amp for a blues sound?

    • @TheRhino-27
      @TheRhino-27 9 років тому +1

      tonyaxitalia Clean channel with the crunch setting, gain all the way up, treble at about 7 mid at at about 8 and bass up to 10. Presence and resonance set to preference. Neck pup on your guitar with the tone control rolled back between half way and 3/4 of the way. I play with a Gibson SG standard and this gives me a good creamy tone screaming the blues.

    40 all tube watts.
    can this be powerful enough to gig with.
    medium sized bars, n small halls and theaters?
    iv currently have an mg 50 solid state that is just adequate. I know tube wattage is generally louder, but what I'm getting at I guess is, is 40tube watts equal to 50 solid state? in terms of precived volume?

    • @PeterDad60
      @PeterDad60 7 років тому +1

      It's loud enough to cause serious hearing loss if you stand to close and play long enough and frequently enough. How loud do you need it to be? So my answer is yes it's loud enough for medium sided bars and small halls and theaters. All by it's self as shipped.
      If you need too you can add an external 16 ohm 12" speaker cab along with the amps internal speaker. Just plug the internal speaker in one of the 8 ohm output's and the external 16 ohm speaker into the other 8 ohm output so combined the load is still 8 ohms which is the minimum according to the owners manual.
      Or you can disengage the 16 ohm internal speaker and run a 2 x 12 or a 4 x 12 at either 8 or 16 ohms. Basically you can get real loud as you can even connect two Marshall 1960 Cabs and run them at 16 ohms each which also ends up as an 8 ohm load as seen by the amp. So a Marshall 40 watt tube amp driving 2 Marshall 1960 cabs will play an arena.
      I think it's the perfect amp that can do anything!

      Not really. It sounds more of a classic rock amp to my ears. I need to get it to a pedal to get a modern heavy metal tone. I did try it with the tone shaping mode (without pedals), pretty decent but you're not going to like if you're looking for a modern heavy metal tone like A7X. I have to note that mine is the regular version of the DSL40C with the Seventy 80 speakers. It sounds just a little bit better than Marshall's custom speakers on the MG50CFX to me.

    Not a 75 watt Creamback as stated above in writing by Don carr. It's a Celestion G12M -65 Creamback 12" 65 watts, 16 ohms. I own this same Marshall DSL40 CST and just verified once again by grabbing a flashlight and looking at the back of the speaker inside the cab. This same speaker is also in my new Voc AC-15C1VB.
    My opinion is that Sweetwater takes back amps that have problems and the customer no longer wants and then Sweetwater repairs the amp and puts in a better speaker so they can sell it as new. Both my DSL40DSL and Vox AC-15C1VB have the same speakers. The VB for the Vox means Vintage Black. To separate it from any other Vox as the same principle is applies to the DSL40 CST. They change the name, say it's only available at Sweetwater. The Vox tubes were all upgraded to JJ's as well!
    I have no problems with either of these amps so I'm good. -Peter turning 71 tomorrow

    I own this amp, and have for quite some time. Every review loves to brag about the reverb. In thruth though, the reverb sucks. Not only does the reverb suck, it's arguably the worst reverb ever. Play around with the reverb controls long enough you'll dicover it might be useful as a tone shift. But what it'll never do is provide " reverb ". It's a good amp, but if you're on a budget, add about $130.00 to the overall cost for a quality reverb pedal.

      I would have thought since they have had that issue with the DSL 40C, Marshall would have addressed the Reverb....or LACK OF REVERB in these Combo's and fixed the issue with the new DSL 40CR.
      Unfortunately not.
      The main thing that makes the new DSL 40CR much better than the Original DSL 40C is 1st, they upgraded the Speaker to the Celestion " V " Type Speaker.......they should have gone ahead and just put in the Celestion " V 30 " Speaker....but I guess Celestion wants to make more money by having the consumer by the " V 30." or the Greenback.
      2nd, they upgraded the Ultra Gain, made it more versatile and sounds much smoother.
      Depending on how well the V Type sounds after it's Broken In, more than likely, I'll be upgrading to the Vintage 30.
      At least they got rid of the horrible Celestion 70/80!!!!
      If they had put in the " V " Type speaker a year or so earlier, I wouldn't have had to go buy the TON OF LEAD Blackstar Stage 60.....which also had the 70/80 Speakers in them.....have no idea what's on Celestion's mind when they introduced those models unless it was knowing the Consumer would rip them out, use them as Paperweights and buy either the Vintage, Green or Creambacks....hence making Celestion a lot more $$$$$!!!!
      Horrendous sounding Speaker. Had them in my Blackstar Stage 60 212 Combo and it sounded like a loud Fizzing Turd until I replaced them with the Vintage 75.....huge difference.
      Now that my Spine has had enough of lugging around an incredibly overweight 212 Combo, I'm having to step down to a single 112 Combo.
      My DSL 40CR still needs some time for the Speaker to break in, but I can tell that although it's not totally broken in, it is a HUGE improvement over the 40C with the 70/80's.
      Now, MARSHALL......FIX YOUR REVERB ISSUES!!!!!!! I DON'T HAVE THE ROOM OR WANT ANOTHER PEDAL ON MY PEDALBOARD!!!........ESPECIALLY A REVERB PEDAL WHEN YA GOT REVERB BUILT IN TO YOUR AMPS!!!!
      If I have to add a Reverb, unfortunately it will have to be an external Reverb Tank instead of a Pedal.......MORE WEIGHT I DON'T WANT TO CARRY AROUND!!!
      seti11, good luck with your DSL!!!!

      @@keithdarling8290 Nope. They haven't addressed it, even on the new DSL 40CR. Instead they changed the footswitch so now it switches OD1/OD2 and the effects loop on/off instead of OD1/2 and reverb on/off. They should have added $20 to their cost and installed a spring reverb unit. It would have sounded tons better. Besides that the amp sounds great.
