PSA:
The podcast mentioned by Rex is brand new. Episode 1 drops tomorrow morning on the Whiskey Tribe channel. See you there!
Good. I felt like such a slacker... not a true W/T devotee. Glad to know I am still within your grace
Holy shit 😎
Regarding this episode, you've done an injustice to the Whistle Pig Single Barrel Rye, which you intentionally didn't put on the wall based on accessibility. If you're changing the rules there should be a taste off with Travese City...!
L😆

😁🤦🏼♂️
I have to stop watching these videos in the morning because they make me want to start drinking at 9 am
Lol, well it ain't like we've got anywhere to be right now!
It's Happy Hour somewhere!
Lol right??@!!
Historical episode. Dethroning of Whistle Pig and redefining of the Feature Wall. *Mind Blown*
Throws up eating apple sauce.
Loves scotch that tastes like surgical rubber, sweaty feet, and burned meat.
*Just Daniel things
3:43, I hope Daniel realizes that he's nosing without the glass.
Would not have caught that without the comment.
I think that was the preserves he was smelling in his mind. The hand shape was more can-like than glass-like. But good eye spotting that in the first place.
@@naterunyon5608 I know that but thinking he forgot the glass to nose is way funnier. :D
Was wondering if anyone else caught that lmao
Pear and applesauce with the pinch of cinnamon in a whiskey sounds amazing
Hell, do the reverse and you have a great warm topping for vanilla ice cream, or leave apples and pears chunky and fill a pie!
BUT... it's NOT! Trust me on this one!
Greg Vangsness here. I couldn't help myself! I had to watch this episode again... AND Thank You Rex Williams for Compelling Daniel Whittington to taste this expression. This is what AU$ 80 buys in Oz!!! The wild funk is from the source of fermentation: whatever wild yeast happens to be on the grains! Oh, this was perfect shenanigans for me to enjoy! BY THE WAY, I didn't buy a bottle of this for me, just for The Vault and The Tribe! BUT... I did taste it twice, on two different bottlings. Neither was better, but both were different funk! Sorry Daniel, it was the whisk(e)y you needed to take for the Tribe! Rex isn't the only one who can shenanigan!!! CHEERS!
Heads up, y'all. Let it be known that this is specifically Traverse City Whiskey Co. There is another distillery in the same area with the moniker Grand Traverse Distillery. "Traverse City Distillery" is nothing.
Happy hunting and cheers!
Curtis Drullinger also worth noting that TCWC most likely sourced this whiskey. I was there 4 years ago (the age of this whiskey) and took a tour. Their still was caged off and was a bright new shiny copper, as though it had never been used and was there for show. Grand Traverse Whiskey on the other hand, had a still that was clearly in use. Times may have changed, but this “quintessential rye” may be a charlatan
@@paulmaceri4325 WhistlePig is also sourced Canadian whiskey.
Curtis Drullinger true, but that is fairly well known. TCWC does not disclose that they are sourcing. Again, it’s speculation on my part, but if they were sourcing then it should have been stated
There is no Traverse City Distillery in TC, just taprooms. Everything is made in Ohio with a TC label. Much better distillery's in Traverse City.
Greg Vangsness here. 😊 Thanks for the 'perfect' balanced (balanced because you put my shenanigans bottle in with one of the three or four I thought were really good) review. You put the right spin on the Mount Compass alright, IMHO. One year old in the barrel, over ripe pear and apple, and the funk from the use of wild yeast to brew, make an interesting mix. I'd still drink it in preference to Monkey Shoulder as something different. For conversation.
I really do prefer the "accesible" criteria! This is really sad to me :( Try having two bottles per category maybe?
Just an idea, but for the 'quintessential' whiskies, I think a blind tasting would be cool to watch. Like pick 3 - 5, then blind test. Thanks as always for the great content during this whole situation.
Yeah, that'd be a great way to determine the best of the best...a blind tasting.
I think it would be cool to crowd source 3, each pick their own to make 5, maybe make the Traverse City BP 6(?). Then do a blind taste test.
Only question is, what if Rex and Daniel disagree on #1?
Heck ya
The Traverser City brand is easily available at my local Total Wine in Washington State, however that particular bottle doesn't seem to exist anywhere. Somebody else posited that it may be a distillery only bottle, and that seems likely to me...
I'm screamin NO you've got the Whistle Pig in Rye! Then upon realization, go to a side by and side and a dethorne,,,, wow! I'm a huge fan of Whistle Pig, now i've got to get a bottle to see for myself. My father in law calls the AR15, Another Receipt 15, because there's so many things you can buy for it. Whiskey Tribe is that for the whiskey world. Another day another bottle!
Why is a UA-cam whiskey channel infinitely better at setting a social distancing example than any press conference our national government stumbles through?
AYYyyyyyye Michigan stuff! I can actually find this. :)
Same. Lol
Be careful you might start getting overwhelmed by requests! From people like me ; -)
@@qthemusiq4461 :O
True story. I had hand surgery in high school (years ago). I had general anesthesia, so I was out for a couple of hours, for the duration of the surgery. When I came to in the recovery room, they gave me apple juice. I was still nauseated from the anesthesia, and I threw up. Since that day, I can't smell or even think about apple juice.
Traverse city whiskey is pretty widely distributed
I truly enjoy your channel. From the view of a whiskey enthusiast, you are living the dream. But I'm sure in actuality there are many hours of work involved. Thank you. Great job.
Many have denied it, but the evidence is clear of the Mooch's growing power! All that is needed for the glorious return to be complete is that valiant cry, "Service me Somm!"
God, I love the Benevolent Bastard animations so much. Fancy Dan did a great job on those.
You’re going off the rails with the quintessential. Your original idea was great. Easily accessible, reasonably priced and serves as a excellent yet typical example.
I love old portrero but would never accuse it of being a classic example (quintessential) rye. It’s my favorite rye but I would consider Dad’s Hat a quintessential example, whistle pig too.
Maybe you should have a separate category for “best of.”
Put the pig back in the shelf! 🥃🐷
They've done an injustice to the Whistle Pig Single Barrel Rye, which they intentionally didn't put on the wall based on accessibility. If they're changing the rules there should be a taste off with Travese City...!
Agreed.
I used to travel Michigan a lot for work. Discovered this specific Traverse City whiskey by accident at a hotel bar in Muskegon one evening. It does deserve the Quintessential label.
Don't be surprised by Michigan whiskeys! There are tons of great things happening up here in Michigan in tons of different types of alcohol. Just cause whistlepig is more accessible to the general public, doesn't necessarily make it better! Every company starts small, it's publicity like this that builds a brand. I love that a local bottle on the shelf of my liquor store can be seen by a channel I watch!
Traverse City rye just doubled in price...
My mom bought stuff off the Schwann’s truck all the time when I was a kid. What a throwback.
I just called my local vendor and ordered a bottle of the TCD Barrel Proof Rye.
You get a Ballpark on price range?
@@zanderwow I looked it up and saw it for $89.
@@zanderwow, I was told $79.95. But, I live in Michigan, so it's kind of local.
Ok, I'm in Ga and didnt even see Ga on the traverse city "whiskey finder". I got a guy that can probably get it for me, just didnt wanna get my head knocked off if it was over $150 bucks. $79-$89 I can handle! Thanks guys!
Cask strength Islay? Yes.
Apple Sauce? Dead.
Greg Vangsness here. I bought this in Flint, Michigan at a little Mom and Pop Liquor Store. It is not that hard to get a hold of... Cheers.
Traverse city distillery 🙏
Big fan of the idea of removing accessibility and going with what you belive is a better whisky
Under lockdown in South Africa we aren't allowed out to buy alcohol...this is torture watching this...but so enjoyable at the same time. Thanks guys :)
Why is this Rare Whiskey Friday different than all other Rare Whiskey Fridays? On all other RWF's Rex drinks standing upright, but on this RWF Rex drinks reclining. Passover reference!!!
lol
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Daniel despise a whiskey that much 😂
Daniel son
I feel so privileged to have access to traverse city whiskey (rye) whenever I want cause I’m just that great 👍 p.s. I also live in Grand Rapids for those that don’t live in the great mitten state Grand Rapids is located in Michigan
Traverse City Whiskey Co Barrel Proof Rye is awesome. They use Ferarri casks is one of the reasons its so awesome. Crazy expensive barrels but makes amazing whiskey. I agree that bp rye is outstanding. A great distillery to visit as well if you guys take a trip to Michigan. Cheers.
Wow. Day 1 on the subscription, Michigander hearing a really accurate critique of Traverse City Whiskey. Sold, lifelong follower. Well done. Karma me thinks....
Feels good to live 2 hours from Traverse City
I'm on the west side of Michigan. I need to get up to visit this distillery for sure. I am only 3 hours away and only slighlty more than an hour away from my Cabin. Thanks for sharing.
I'd like to suggest that every Rare Whisky Friday episode a bottle of expensive scotch gets a review!
Slainté!
Guess I need to take a trip to the grocery store for a bottle of that Rye, maybe a trip into Traverse if they don't carry that bottling.
All on board to celebrating and honoring the new category criteria. Good call.
You guys are great:) I learn something new every episode while sipping a whiskey and having some laughs. Great channel. Thanks:)
I can get the T City everywhere
When the time is right, I will be taking a road trip to Michigan, seems they have an Outpost shop near our shared border. Otherwise, seems the main location is at the top of Michigan, quite inaccessible for ... everyone. A quick google shows you can also order their products on some reputable online liquor retailers, save for those who can't get mail order. I trust your wise opinions, you have shown me the path to some craft distilleries that knock the big guys out in a boxing match.
I found a mail order place that ships to my state but they only have the North Coast Rye, not the barrel proof. I might order a bottle anyway because it sounds like exactly my kind of rye.
@@wingracer1614 if you live in Ohio I would keep your eyes peeled for an appearance next month!
@@Potatotomato99 Nowhere near or I wouldn't be worried about mail order
I feel like your my friends, even though I have never met you. This Scottish malt I’m drinking is bringing out the emotions.
So everyone should do themselves the favor of re-watching these videos, especially the Whiskey Tribe Videos with the playback speed set at .5 . Go to the 8:30 mark in this video particularly.. or the 9:35 area
I am really glad you guys switched up the wall. As an unwashed ignorant whiskey newbie, I want to know what I should aspire to acquire. Think of it as you two are my bartenders. I ask you to pour me a Rye whiskey that I would enjoy. Which one are you going to reach for FIRST? Are you going to grab the Whistle Pig, which is the safe choice, or the Traverse City, which is the choice closer to your heart?
Daniel's beard has been on point lately.
This signature edition isn't even listed on the Traverse City Distillery website. Is it just sold at the distillery?
Rushing out of quarantine, mask in hand, risking life and limb, to find some Traverse City Straight Rye BP, before it disappears. Thanks....
I found an old 80's synth pop band called "Scotch". I dig me some 80's Freestyle for sure. So now, not only do I like to taste Scotch, I also like to hear Scotch!!!
“Quickly Daniel san....” Rex, you are a god!!!🤗😄🤣😂🤣😂🥃
If I can get the Traverse City at total wine and more in the Seattle area. They have a good distraction.
www.breakingbourbon.com/single-barrel-club/sbc-10-northern-exposure
Interesting read, but it seems like this Barrel Proof Rye might be a unique bottling right now and therefore wouldn't meet good distribution unlike standard Traverse City Whiskey Co. products.
I was trying to find the Fukano Whiskey here in Japan and ran across this: “... Uhde discovered that the only way to bottle Fukano’s rice whisky for sale in Japan was to heavily filter it and remove its natural color. (In Japan, shochu is limited in how dark the distillate can be.) It was mutually agreed that the brilliant spirit needed to be made available in its natural form as whisky, so he asked permission from Fukano to blend and bottle casks for export to the U.S. so that the aged distillate could be kept in its untampered state. A deal was struck, and Fukano whisky is available for export market only-not to be found in Japan.”
I was trying to find the Fukano Sherry Cask for you guys but it was all sold out. That expression tamps down the shiny metallic and ethanol note a bit with a stone fruit taking its place.
I understand the shift from accessibility to capability, but as a resident of eastern nowhere-Iowa, I must say that it would sadden me if some element of the previous style didn't survive, as we have NOTHING here outside of the big brands.
And this is where the wall goes from selections I can have a good chance of trying, to a wall of whisk(e)ys I will never see. Let alone get the chance buy and try. It was fun while it lasted.........
Where do you live, Dale?
@@Potatotomato99 Far northern Minnesota. We do have one "rare" whiskey, Far North Rye. A small family field to bottle distillery.
@@ringding1000 you can find TC Whiskey in Minnesota. just have your local favorite liquor store reach out. Most of the big ones will carry although this rye is more on the "rare" side!
@@ringding1000 going to have to get my hands on a bottle of the Far North!
Surprised the corn and barley whisky bombed- Woodford Reserve's straight Malt whisky is a Barley/Corn mash and that one is quite tastey and favorable for me.
Found that Fukano today in Salt Lake. Gonna try it tonight.
BRINGS ME BACK TO THE REX SERVICE ME SOMM DAYS LOL
Hello you have to redo the Woodinville whiskey rye now!! You both said that the Woodinville product was the one that has really converted you over to rye whiskey.
I also believe that both Whistlepig and Traverse City are MGP products or blended with MGP products. Woodinville is their own whiskey.
You also have varying proofs. Do you need a cask strength Woodinville Rye for you to fairly compare?
Scott Pysher
In the 100 episodes I have watched I have never seen THE D react like that lmfao
Dammit Daniel...it has a KOALA on it! Totes American hahahaha
Also, I would not have told us (or Rex) about this applesauce Kryptonite... I think we need a Smoothie revisit...
Why don't you guys upload the podcast to UA-cam?
I didn't even know there was a podcast.
Is it a Patreon thing?
They just shot their first couple episodes. Dropping tomorrow on the Tribe channel.
@@fancydan1498 Thanks!
Happy Easter my friends.
I’ve never had a rye whiskey. Your tasting notes make me salivate and wish to try it.
You guys need to try another Traverse city rye from Grand Traverse distillery its called Ole George straight Rye whiskey and is 100% Rye. If I ever get back up there I will get us both one.
Wonder what podcast they're going to be on...
Seriously, been spending the last hour trying to randomly find it.
I find it so strange that Daniel will puke at the smell of applesauce and refuses to eat pear... but will suck down the most brine filled sauce you’ve ever had 😂
Greg Vangsness here with my 'hat trick' comment, and I did genuinely forget to remove the price tag,.. some day, when you open that Hull and Oats from Motor City Gas Company distillery (Love the Name) can you let us know if it was a different batch number and see if it was different/better than your first review, please. I actually love this expression, and was surprised by your reactions. In the other reviews of the bottles submitted, we are on the same page, just curious. CHEERS!
Daniel, you just gave Rex a good idea for a prank for you.
When did you place a third bottle on the classic wall of whisky..I remember the Lagavulan 16, and the Whistle Pig 10...what’s the third bottle???
Just search "Whiskey vault Kavalan" on you tube, its the most recent one.
8:38-8:48
inner Rex i feel a slight breeze on my tum-tum but my hands are full of whiskey n' waddle
inner Rex Do a belly roll - ah, that's better.
Congratulations Rex, you have reached peak optimal performance - dadbod_lvl1000 /complete
Omg. I just noticed how really tiny Daniel looks when Rex leans forward in these new posts. Lol. Rex towers over the little guy.
Once this social distancing stuff is over with, you should do your show with both of you sitting on the couch., even if it's just the rare whiskey Friday shows.
With all the socal distancing going on I'm surprised that you haven't come up with a funner way of getting the whiskey from Daniel to Rex, some sort of slide perhaps on a hot wheels track or a zip line type device with the glass in a harness. I know shenanigans are more a tribe episode thing but I think is time
Rex decided if he has to be in the corner, he's at least going to be comfy.
Daniel it's okay to be wrong lol 😂😂
You guys gotta get your hands on NY Empire Rye. It's own legal category. Black Button has been my favorite.
“How you don’t like pear?!” 🍐❤️
Had both...WhistlePig...and no one gives me my bourbon. :-)
Have the same applesauce experience! Reminds me of preschool lunch lol - scares me a lot.
Daniel, try under ripe pears when they are crispy and crunchy rather than grainy.
The Barrel Proof TC Rye with that label I had was MGP so might want to check that.
The Traverse City Barrel Proof Rye is apparently the Platonic form of rye whiskey.
Gentlemen, and Magnificent Bastards, I just purchased the Traverse City Barrel Proof Rye at Total Wine. It's accessible.
Daniel is always talking how he would judge a whiskey if he didn't know what it was before smelling/tasting it. Has there ever been an episode where Daniel goes into the whiskey blind? Have they ever tried to fool The Som?!
Dude, I have put up with Daniel’s crying about what he likes and doesn’t like for awhile and came back to the one to watch the Traverse City review. Babies like applesauce. I don’t get it. Rex how do you put up with it? What stays your hand ,Bro. Pears and apples with cinnamon does sound amazing in a whiskey. 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm with Daniel, pears suck. TC Whiskey Co is out here in AZ. And I've seen the regular Rye.
Do any Bastards or Greg himself know where those Koalas come from? My daughter happen to see it while I was watching it and was enthralled as she loves Koalas. I'd love to buy one, especially if they help Australian Wildfire/Wildlife/Koala Charities.
I'd be interested to see a frankenblend of all of the whiskies that end up on the feature wall
Still waiting for that Shanty themed whiskey episode! Magnificent bastard shanty!
Does anyone know what episode they reviewed Motor City Gas on.
What's an elephant that doesn't matter called?
An irrelephant.
Red: I’m glad I went for the waddle
Brad Leone has entered the chat
Daniel hates whisky with heavy pear notes, but likes Peat Monster and Ardbeg? The hell? For me, both of those are like you filled a whisky barrel with heavily smoked pears. Edit: also, if you pause it perfectly at 6:57, it totally looks like Rex's arm is doing a Stretch Armstrong all the way across the room to mooch the bottle from in front of Daniel.
I’m late to the party haha but talking about the Fukano they tasted. The label looked like the 2017 edition. Anybody know? Also I’m new to the channel have they ever reviewed other fukano lines? If not I’d be inclined to send them my favorites. The 10yr rocks imo and the 12yr is awesome as well. Very sweet like they’re saying but great rice whisky’s if that’s your thing. Cheers
I’m new to all this. I’m having a hard time trying to wrap my head around how whiskeys can taste like different things that aren’t involved in the making process. Like honey, vanilla, cinnamon etc.
It's all about what your brain associates with the taste and smell. It's also why the last Islay I tried reminded me of my last motorcycle crash. Burnt rubber and gasoline.
Grizz Axxemann thank you
@@msantosvitorino I would suggest watching the Whiskey Tribe videos where they are sampling various whiskeys for noobs. Theres a great explanation they give during those videos.
@@karinawalker8140 That's what helped me out when I got back into whisk(e)y. For so many years all I knew was well-grade Canadian blends from my youth.
3:35 I know Rex... I know so many people with Daniel's food preferences.... you are making the same face I make at them, lol.
