I appreciate your honest review on mountaineering boots. I haven't climbed for quite some time, but I have the urge to do so. I usually resort to LaSportive for mountain climbing, 14ers, and Scarpa for serious winter conditions and ice climbing. When I first started climbing 14ers I had found the Super Hiker ll boot that Vasque was making back in the 1990's, but then they were taken over by China so I went to LaSportive unfortunately I wore them out, so I am looking for a comparable one made nowadays. So yeah, I am much older but still in pretty good shape, I just want to climb some more before I can't. Great video though.
Thanks Rich, appreciate it. It’s funny, at a certain point, especially during my guiding time, I was almost exclusively wearing shoes that were related to mountain sports. I even wore approach shoes in the office, just because they are comfy.

I am looking at B2 boots but for winter I will not climb MontBlanc, but I will encounter a lot of snow. I will not climob vertical ice so semiauto crampons maybe will do. I am looking at the SCARPA Mantas , but they are abit heavy idk... I will not take them more than 3500 m maybe -15 -18 C. What is your opinion on quality of the SCARPA. my Budget is about 360 euro so I cant jump to the b3 anyway ... Nice video tho !!!!
Thank you, an informative video. I'm curious why you don't like Mammut boots? I've never had a problem with them & find the fit spot on, which is mainly why I wear them.
Hey David, I hope it's not so much a "liking" they don't fit me personally, but that's not the basis of my comments.: -) I know a lot of mountain guides who are sponsored by Mammut and get the gear for free. They, of course, wear it, but it turns out that the shoes hold much less long than comparable shoes from LaSportive & Scarpa. Historically Mammut was not a shoe manufacturer. They bought a manufacturer, but as it is with these acquisitions, quite a bit of the knowledge, especially in R&D, gets lost, and that shows a bit in quality. And not to hang somebody out to dry, but I know quite some Mammut athletes, and I saw them switching into Mammut boots for pictures with the photographer but switched back to Scarpa afterward. In the end, the quality is okay, it's not great, but if the boot fits you well with the wide heel, then I'd recommend that you stick with it. :-)
Great video!... I have the La Sportiva Aequilibrium ST and Scarpa Phantom Guides..... Which would you recommend for Midi Plan and Cosmiques??? Thanks 👍
Thank you! Cosmiques itself is definitely a case for the Aequilibrium, Midi Plan Traverse I would use a heavier boot (in your case the phantom guide) just to be on the safe side.
Awesome, have fun there. If you’re in Chamonix make sure to visit the „Le chaudron“ and the Josephine, excellent French cuisine. 👍 If you need something quick, check out the „Pizza & vino“, or „Cool Cats“ for hot dogs.
I’m generally doing the cosmiques ridge for acclimatization. If you’d like to do more, you could either hike up from Chamonix to the Plan de l’Aiguille hut, and then further to the mid-stop of the cable car. Alternatively you could go up all the way the Aiguille du Midi with the cable car and either stay there a bit, walk to the cosmiques refuge and have a coffee, or practice some glacier rescue on the glacier itself.
