Thanks Linda!! I really appreciate it. Yeah, people seem to forget that it's FREE content for them and there are more than one way to do the same things. We all have different styles of teaching and sometimes it takes seeing the same idea presented a couple of ways for it to click. Your comment is very encouraging and something I really needed just now.
Thank you Dee! Quilting is so exacting, and with this I feel like you can enjoy the process without the stress of everything matching up. I think getting in there and sewing for practice and enjoyment is how we really learn.

Oh Melissa, thank you so much!! I've been on the fence about whether to make any more plant or garden videos this summer. The garden is very different for me this year. I do appreciate you kind comments and I will have to work in something new. Thank you for a kind comment. Means so much!

So Beautiful! I am not new to sewing and in the ancient past I tried to create a quilt totally by hand. Then babies happened. I still work full time but now kids are grown I have more time to do learn new skills that allow me to create. Your French Braid Quilt Tutorial and your joy have inspired me! I now have a path for the first Jelly Roll that I purchased a few weeks ago. :-)
Hi Jamie!! This is a fun block to sew! When I get myself organized for the new year, I'll work on plenty of projects that use this block. There are many smaller projects you can do with quilting that don't require making full sized quilts. Thanks for sharing your story!

Watched you today for the first time and must say I enjoyed your straight forward way of teaching. Will be watching your older vids. Have the same sewing machine that you have but also enjoy embroidery. Have a Viking and only did projects for my late wife and miss the ooha and awws when aproject is finished. Am in my late eighties and sew for my own enjoyment. Keep them coming and I'll keep watching.
Oh gosh, Judy! I'm so happy it helped you! As I'm getting my sewing space set up in the new year, I'm 'm planning on doing projects that use this fun pattern, so I hope you will stick around for that!

I'm so happy you found this tutorial Cheri! While I am by no means an experienced quilter, I found this project and it has brought me so much joy. Creatively, it is such fun to put the panels together. And you can practice you 1/4" seams and pressing without the demand for perfection. Which I think is freeing.

I'm so happy to hear this Brookie! I definitely think this is the easiest place to start in terms of a quilt square, even though it looks quite complicated. You can practice your cutting and seaming and when you sew panels together, it's not critical they line up perfectly. I find this is something that you do that will not only be fun, you will learn and improve your sewing skill. Thanks for your lovely comment!

Truthfully, Marlene, it's not the best way to press out in quilting. You don't want to stretch the fabric or the blocks. BUT>>>>>these were crappy, cheap strips in this jelly roll. I had to work on them extra to get them in place and straight. So be mindful of your fabrics as you work. I wish I had explained that better in the video.

I love French braids and find them lots of fun to do. I have a ruler that you can cut the diagonal line on the strip. Saves a bunch of fabric. I also put a triangle on the bottom of the strip (like your 2 1/2" square) and sometimes at the top.
I used a binding ruler, cutting left and right at the same time. The section can be quite long with jr strips. I used partiat seams at the start, then after cutting the top straight, add the off-cuts onto the base. The sides being squares, works for chevrons, also with partial seams, but being cut at the 45° stops waste triangles from taking over. I am looking for a white to use between braids for a large quilt. Small town, can't pay on internet... fun.
Well thank you 😇 very much! I just found your channel and I will be watching all your tutorials, any thing quick is for me my brain goes for one thing to the next so I am just finishing up a 3yard quilt and now I have something new to do with all the leftovers thank yo 😍😇

Thank you for the clear, thorough and well paced instruction! It was great that you explained that it will be much smaller when trimmed. New sexist don't always realize that. I've made these before without the square at the beginning and they can get "tweaked" without that to hold everything firm. You can strip piece these by doing two or more rows at a time, but that would be confusing for a beginner.
Thank you for the feedback Catherine! And thank you for noticing that this is designed specifically for brand new people. Quilting can be daunting to get right, and I think it can take the wind out of someone's sails to put so much emphasis on bias edges and strip piecing. I think it's preferable to get someone going and build that confidence and have fun with something first. You have to learn by doing, and if you are struggling from the start to get pieces cut right and have every seam perfect, it sucks the joy out of the making. I think precision can come with time. I'm working through the process of building beautiful HST units now, and it's definitely a process. If I had tried these when I first started I would be totally overwhelmed. But building up to them and making several small projects that incorporate the unit gives me confidence to sew them into a larger project. And even though my early projects are not perfect, I find I still love looking at them!

@@brendawellnitz6150 Gosh Brenda, I don't know, really. I don't make full sized quilts. I would think 12 x 24 blocks would be a better scale on a project of that size than what I typically make. I make small projects and mini quilts so my blocks are generally not too large OR the one block is my whole project.
Patty, I just love your video on the braid. May I suggest that you can use a foundation fabric and then you don't have to cut your strips (6") until after you sew the braid. This gives you something to baste those bias edges to (side seams won't stretch) and leaving tips of fabric on the strips for possible future use (frugal). Keep up the good work. Sincerely, Ms Karin
Thanks Ms. Karin! I will look up that technique! I had only seen this done in the bag video I mentioned so it was a matter of compiling other video tutorials I could find into this one. Do you have a video or blog post to point me in the right direction? Sometimes the best information is buried and impossible to find with out a reference.

Oh yes indeed, so beautiful, thank you for sharing with us this lovely way to apply in so many projects, did subscribe of course and a big thumbs up. Kind regards
Keep going for a border. Watch those biased edges. Can you use the offcuts to start a new braid, since you first square becomes a triangle once it’s trimmed? And those last top pieces, are they a 6” piece minus a starting triangle? Perhaps we can economise here. Ooh this looks very pretty. Thank you
I love this easy pattern so much. I think sewing the cuts would be awfully fiddly since they are such small bits, but you could certainly try it. I get so little time to sew and make projects that I allow myself the space to make and enjoy it and don't worry too much with scraps. I don't save any scraps though I know a lot of people do. I don't have space for it, so I toss the scraps once I've completed my project. I'm not the thriftiest maker out there. But you should do whatever works for you! And if you can figure out a way to reuse the scraps, I think that's great!

I was looking for an easy pattern to teach my niece how to quilt and I came across your braid tutorial. Great video and so easy to understand for a beginner. I was just wondering what size is the square you started with. Would the square size change if you used a longer length jelly roll strip. Thanks, Maria
Hi Maria! I used a 2.5" square at the bottom of my braid. if you cut longer strips for your braid, yes the bottom piece will need to be larger. And it will eventually turn into a triangle shape. I would start with this since it has measurements and uses the width of the quilting ruler to trim down. Keep your first projects and blocks easy. Otherwise it's easy to get discouraged. I hope that helps.

Wonderful demo, I have always like the braid but it looks difficult, I am lefthanded, the world to me is backwards. Gave up trying paper piecing, I always flipped the fabric the 17:58 wrong direction. The braid I believe is doable to learn for us lefties.
Can this be made in a quilt as you go with battling? to make a padded bag? I also want to make place mats and hot pads. You make this so fun, I just want to thank you for your time. This might be the second time I seen this, but I really enjoyed it.
Thank you Wanda!! YES!! Absolutely! I actually used them and made them into a tote bag. There is a video on Midnight Quilt show where she made one. I made mine with lining and interfacing and batting so I prefer it, to be honest. I'm thinking about doing it on my channel since the old craftsy pattern is gone now. And I have a wall hanging I made using the braids that I want to finally get into a finished video this year. I love quilt braids and I'm planning on using them in a bunch of upcoming projects. I do hope something will catch your eye!

You explained so nice and slow for us beginners to understand. My question is the bag lined and what about handles? Would really like to start making Christmas gifts.
Debbie, the bag I made is linked in the description and on that video it links to the tutorial I followed. I have since remade that bag and made a few changes, but you can see the tutorial by clicking through and looking at the bag I made prior to filming this. I wound up using these braids in the second bag, and made some upgrades to that one as well. I hope that helps!
I would love to see a tutorial on putting the bag together. I had to stop making large quilted products due to a neurological problem, but I think I could complete this project!
I have considered making a bag tutorial, but bags like this are so many steps. It's a lot to film and explain so I haven't done it. I would like to share other smaller, simpler bags, and I do plan to do that sooner than something large like this. The bag like this one is not difficult, but it's a lot to film and I''m not sure how many views it would actually get. You might consider a Craftsy membership to try out bags and other small projects there. And and also, I do primarily small quilting projects in the form of pillows and wall hangings or baby sized quilts, so that might be more manageable for you. I hope that helps!
@@PattymacMakes Thanks. Could you just tell me how many of the strips you used, front, back, bottom, sides?? I have made many bags before I lost my fine motor skills So, I may be able to figure it out myself with a little help. Thanks!
@@carolleepoulis9879 Oh Carol! That's so hard! I. made 3 panels on each side. And a border along the top and long straps. I didn't use a pattern. I just made the outside panels using 3 braids, sewed on the top strip and then quilted. Trimmed it square, cut inside pieces using the outside panels for size and put it all together. I did a pretty big boxed bottom. I did not use a pattern. I just put it together. That's why I haven't done a video. I would have to give people measurements and specifics and it's so many pieces. The bag video is still on the Midnight Quilt Show channel that I worked from. But I interfaced and used fusible quilt batting on the outside panels for more structure. I hope that helps!

We all have different styles of teaching and sometimes it takes seeing the same idea presented a couple of ways for it to click. Your comment is very encouraging and something I really needed just now.
Hello 👋 Linda.. how are you doing today how's your day going over there I just hope you're having a good day..
I love your casual style. Quilting should be enjoyable.

Thank you for showing this video for beginners and I love it really.

I have been looking for easy projects so that I may re-wet my quilting feet and believe me I am only a beginner. Thank you for the idea.
I'm so happy you found this tutorial Cheri! While I am by no means an experienced quilter, I found this project and it has brought me so much joy. Creatively, it is such fun to put the panels together. And you can practice you 1/4" seams and pressing without the demand for perfection. Which I think is freeing.

I am very new to sewing and quilting and this made it VERY easy to understand! Thank you!

I love the way you pressed those strips. It will now be my way!!

Thanks for that helpful tips Fran! They really do make for a fun project.
What make is your ruler please
@@marlenesmithies7234 it is càlled a braid template designed by Kate Colleran. Website is seamslikeadream.com
@@marlenesmithies7234 it's 6" wide by 24" long. I got it in Joann Fabrics with a coupon.
Small town, can't pay on internet... fun.

Finally makes sense to me!! Thxxx.
I'm so happy to hear it! I hope you are inspired to make a few!
And even though my early projects are not perfect, I find I still love looking at them!

how big would you make the blocks for a queen size
@@brendawellnitz6150 Gosh Brenda, I don't know, really. I don't make full sized quilts. I would think 12 x 24 blocks would be a better scale on a project of that size than what I typically make. I make small projects and mini quilts so my blocks are generally not too large OR the one block is my whole project.
@@PattymacMakes Thank you so much

No, I don't remember where I learned the technique but it was at least 25years ago. Paper pieced patterns in a class was probably the genesis.

Thanks for this video! Do you have a video with an idea for sewing the braids together? Maybe for a small quilt or similar…?
You could use them in just about anything. I have sewn mine into tote bags that I use all the time, and I constantly get compliments. I really should do a video on how to use them in projects, though.

just found your channel it is great thank you
Thank you Terri! I really appreciate that!
Thank you so much for such a well shown and explained tutorial!!!! :D This is the best one I've come across that shows exactly how to put this together! I just finished the first braid and on to the next. TY :D
Thank you Diane!! I'm so happy you were able to make your own block using the tutorial!
Hello 👋 Diane how are you doing today how's your day going over there I just hope you're having a good day..

beautiful patchwork
Thank you!
Ironing is REALLY important! Can I make the strips longer? The only thing I would dread is trimming off so much of the fabric 😁 SUCH A GREAT TUTORIAL! Thanks!
You can make them as wide or as long as you like, but you would still have wasted to deal with. I love making these and I hope you'll give it a go!
Is there a way to connect the rows to continue the herringbone design instead of having a straight seam? Would love to see a tutorial on that! Love this pattern! Thank you!!!
You might like the broken herringbone stitch quilt! I haven't made that one, but search that term and it will come up for you. I love the braid panels, and am planning projects that use this as a unit.
@@PattymacMakes thank you so much for the reply and advice!!!
@@evadeleon3009 You're welcome Eva! I hope you will try out what I've got planned coming up, too! I think it's actually prettier in person.

Could I add this to a panel for a quilt? Turn on its edge? I love all of your videos you make things so easy to understand thank you!
Thank you for the feedback Shane! I'm so happy the tutorials made sense! And YES!! You can use the panels any way you like. I have a wall hanging project that uses this block pattern coming up as well as smaller projects. So I do hope you will stick around for those!
@@PattymacMakes I will I have learned so much from you and continue to learn you make it so easy! I appreciate you. Can’t wait to try it out and look forward to the coming videos 😊

Well after my last comment to you I finished several French braid sections and completed a lined market bag for myself! So happy with how it turned out and have received several compliments on it already! : )) Thank you again for such a well instructed tutorial! : )
Hey that's GREAT NEWS Diane!! I'm so happy to hear of your great success. I use my bags all the time, and I really should show them as a project on the channel.

Nice idea
Thank you! Cheers!
Hello how are you
Pretty
Wonderful demo, I have always like the braid but it looks difficult, I am lefthanded, the world to me is backwards. Gave up trying paper piecing, I always flipped the fabric the 17:58 wrong direction. The braid I believe is doable to learn for us lefties.
Oh gosh I hope so!! I'm sure you can do it!
Hello 👋 Elizabeth.. how are you doing today how's your day going over there I just hope you're having a good day..
Thank you.
You're welcome Deb!
Hello Deb
very nice
Thank you Lynette! I love sewing this quilt pattern.
@@PattymacMakes Thank you for your reply, looks like I am going to be having lots of fun lol

oh my! I love this. How do I use it for a table runner? Do I leave the strips long?
You could cut the strips a little longer and sew on a border and it would be a beautiful runner!

I have made many bags before I lost my fine motor skills
So, I may be able to figure it out myself with a little help.
@@PattymacMakes Thanks, that is what I needed to know. I appreciate you and your videos!

I ❤️ your iron cover!!!
I'm guessing you made it? Any tutorials on that?
Love your teaching method. Hoping I can pull off this braid
I actually purchased the ironing board cover in Joann!! And I'm sure you can make the braids. It's super easy once you get going!
this is very interesting now you buy these squares or leftover material
They are called precuts! They come in standard sizes and packages like these are all 2.5" and called a jelly roll, and 5" squares are called Charm squares and a 10" square set is called a layer cake. They include all the fabrics in a collection so you get to play with them all.
Hello how are you

Oh wow, cut the maximum width. No waste.
I wanted it 6" panels. And that was easy for me to manage and keep even.
