A song about female self pleasure literally made Tipper Gore break out in hives. Good times.
Maybe Tipper was cranky because she wasn't bopping successfully.
🤣🤣True enough! I remember those days! Good one marleybob!
Maybe the song made her break out in hives in a sensitive area.👀
It's about everybody's self-pleasure.
do you bop?@@yellawerder3279
The way my jaw dropped when I learned as an adult what this song meant after singing the lyrics non-stop as a kid through our house.
Just last month, I had to explain to my sister what this song was about. I figured it out as a 13 year old when the song first came out. Loved seeing this video again after all this time. Picked up on a few more of the "self-pleasure" references in it that I missed before: the self service pump at the gas station and the fact that she was acting like she couldn't see during the dance number at the end--cuz ya know, "it'll make you go blind."
This was one of the first records I bought when I was 7 years old. I had NO idea what she was alluding to or what anything meant. I just thought she bops, like she dances. Then when I got older... Cyndi you cheeky girl! 😂
Same!!! I used to sing this in front of my Mom when I was in 5th grade! I only realized what it was about as an adult. 🤦🏼♀️😂🤣🤦🏼♀️
I remember singing this song (with alternate lyrics, but the same chorus) in my elementary school music class. I had no idea what the real lyrics meant - and I’m not so sure the music teacher did either.
@@scottNNJthat is hilarious!
Cyndi Lauper made it very clear…..WE ALL BOP….at least once in awhile, gosh darn it!! 😂😂 This was a very popular song from 1984.
1984
Exactly 💯
@@chrischar9428 Initially was also thinking 1984, but looked it up. Google said it was released in 1983. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was very late 1983 making me also think 1984.
Even Lou BOP.
All through the night
There is absolutely no way to explain how HUGE Cyndi Lauper was in the 80s. She got all her clothing at thrift stores and we loved every minute she was entertaining us!!!
Yall should definitely check out her song, "All Through the Night". I believe it to be one of her most overlooked songs.
they did that song a year ago
Yeah, that’s a pretty nice song.
And "Change of Heart" 🙂
@@surlechapeau Yeah, but they did a live version which sucked compared the studio version.
Agreed!!!!
Thank you for calling out the keyboards. This song was co-written by my cousin Gary Corbett, who played keys on this track. Gary was a beloved figure in the New York music scene and beyond, being most well-known as Cinderella's keyboardist. He passed away of cancer two years ago, taken far too soon.
Thank you for sharing that. That is awesome information, I didn't know. So sad that he passed, sorry for your loss.
Oh wow. Cinderella was one of my favorite glam bands back in the day. I had no idea Gary co-wrote this! And I’m so sorry for your loss. I know he was a very respected musician, but I expect he was also a beloved family member. ❤
@@khills That is very kind of you to say. I wish I had gotten to spend more time with him, but we lived on opposite coasts.
Cinderella was a amazing and Gary had amazing skills on the keys.
Gary was the secrect weapon for KISS in the 80's a true loss for music RIP Gary
The PMRC (Parents Music Resource Council), led by Tipper Gore, had this on their Filthy Fifteen list. You can thank the PMRC for the Parental Advisory stickers on albums. That lets you know which albums you really wanted to listen to!
As soon as the labels came out, those were the ones I wanted to buy. LOL
🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
@@jbjacobs9514 Right?! I would like to thank the PMRC for pointing out exactly which albums to buy, it really cut through the clutter. 😆
PMRC: we'd like to put a warning label on albums we feel are offensive to let parents know.
Motley Crue: fuck ya! it'll triple our record sales!
LOL ITA - imagine if we had to decide on our own? HA! @Johnny-Socko
If you really want to be blown away by just what a powerhouse performer she is.check out money changes everything live . Her vocals and stage presence will shock you!!!!
Absolutely!!!
Agreed!
the live performance with Counting Crowes
Yessss!!!!!!
She is one of the greatest female live performers of all time!!! And she has an amazing vocal range
Very underrated song!!! If you get it, you get it. 😏
I hadn't watched this video since I was in high school and seeing it makes me realize just how much went over my head as an innocent and naive 14-15 year old! 😆
You can get lost in the sound
@@RobSquadReactions in 1983-84, I wanted to look like Cyndi Lauper. She was (well, still is) so iconic. But I totally missed all the racy stuff in the lyrics and video and it kinda cracks me up
Thanks for the reply, guys! Your videos are one of my favorite parts of every day and YOU always make ME smile.
Don't feel too bad. I was 17 and not too good at working out lyrics when this came out in 1984. Had no idea for years what it was really about!
@@RobSquadReactionsI don't think she's talking about the sound.
Same here !
When Cindi Lauper just released her first album in the early 80s she made several appearances on of all places the Johnny Carson show, and it was so cool to hear how well received she was, not only by Johnny but by the audience. These clips are luckily on youtube and worth checking out.
Her BEST vocal performance is the Roy Oberson remake…”I drove all night.” Is INCREDIBLE!
Believe you will love her version of At Last. Pea e
Yes! I was going to say that.
At last live!!!!
Yes yes yes!
I know a lot of people will not agree with me, but it’s my personal favorite and I think her best song.
This is my favorite Cyndi song as well!
I'm torn between this and Time after Time. I usually just end up saying this is her best rocker and Time after Time is her best ballad.
I agree!
I'm not mad, I get it
I am with you 100%. Not taking anything away from some of her other, generally more celebrated hits, but yeah, this song hit me just right as a wee lad. I was young enough to not understand the subject matter really and the attendant cloud of partial taboo held there. I'd like to believe all that wouldn't have held any significant sway on me, but the song resonated with me from go and that has stuck throughout
She’s picking up a vibration all right; messing’ with the danger zone will make one vibrate for sure! 😊🤭
😂😂
Exactly, not everyone picked up on the lyrics, but I just read a funny comment here on the thread that back then this song made Tipper Gore break out in hives! LOL! Then the PMRC drama happened! A lot happened in the 1980s what a decade!
@@RobSquadReactionsit's adorable how sweet and innocent you and Jay are that you completely missed what the song is "really" about. 😂
@@robertg7396they have 3 children. They ain't so innocent 😁😂
@@butterflymama0838Ba-hahaha. Touché 😂
Cyndi did a great cover of the Marvin Gaye classic, "What's Going On!"
The title of her 1983 debut album “She’s so Unusual “ described her perfectly. Her appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson back then was so fun to watch.
Came here to make the same comment! It really showed her personality. 💃💃💃
Funnily it references a song by Helen Kane (which she did a partial cover of in a medley with "Yeah Yeah")...the original "boop-boop-a-doop girl" ;p
I remember that! When she sang Time After Time, Johnny was visibly moved by her performance.
Johnny Carson would sometimes extend the time allotted to a guest if they were particularly entertaining. The first songs were upbeat, and Cindy was great in her interview, but then coming back from commercial break to sing a touching song was like the cherry on top. Carson was truly impressed that night.
Carson knew when something was working. He was a master showman.
Cyndi Lauper re-released "She Bop" and many of her hits in an acoustic album in the mid 2000s. The album is called The Body Acoustic. Although "She Bops" is still about self pleasure, it gives a very different "vibe" played acoustically. If you enjoy acoustic, this will go on your playlist like it is on mine. Love Cyndi & I am glad Amber mentioned she's a girl's girl.
i love the acoustic versions of her songs. It really brings her 80's classics into a modern-day sound that is timeless.
IMO the best version was on the Tonight Show ua-cam.com/video/vPfu9V_VS-A/v-deo.html
The 80’s were risqué in the coolest way possible.
And it was awesome!
You guys have saved my difficult life. The positive vibes in all your videos mean everything to this very old guy.
I hope you're doing ok tonight. There sure are some rough days. Glad the Rob squad are around to bring us smiles and music. 🤗
This more about Cyndi Lauper than this particular song, but I think it shows what a beautiful spirit Cyndi Lauper has. Cyndi Lauper became popular when I was a kid. I don't remember my mom paying her any particular attention, but my mom just became a big fan over the years. When my mom was in her seventies, she went to see Cyndi Lauper with my oldest brother. This was a few years after my mom had a stroke. She was still getting out there but was in a wheelchair by this time. She went to see Cyndi Lauper in a beautiful theater in Downtown Chicago, and they had special seating close to the stage for people like my mom. Cyndi Lauper came over during the show when she saw how much my mom was enjoying the show and "danced" with her. Then made sure to connect with her and my brother afterwards and have a little chat. I was out of state, so I am so sorry I missed this experience, but I know it made my mom so happy, and she had so much fun.
A song about self pleasuring is alway a hit
Cyndi Lauper "I drove all night." Is a Banger as well.....Love her!
LOL! Need to pay special close attention to the lyrics of this one. It sort of flew under the radar of censorship. 😆😆😆
All through the night, true colors, time after time, money changes everything & Goonies R Good enough, are other fantastic hits for Cyndi.
Goonies never say die!
Adding Change of Heart to your great list!
fyi, they did All through the night and Time After Time already.
I will add 'I Drove All Night' to your list
@@nanoeletron Her version is my favorite (over Roy Orbison and Celine Dion's versions).
The best thing about this reaction is watching Jay & Amber having such fun with the song, all the while not realizing that bopping is pleasuring oneself lol.
She bop is personalized gratification 😮
"Self Service" 😄
This song shows that she's a master debater.
Turning Japanese
Jay and Amber have really loosened up. He was so uptight about "I touch Myself", but they really embraced this one and took it in stride.
Lol takes some people A looooong ..time
After all these years it's still a trip to listen to the lyrics and remember how utterly clueless I was loving this song as a kid. I had absolutely no idea. Ah, innocence.
She is a talented lady. Attracted a lot of attention in her hey day. True Colours if you havent heard it yet.
A must hear (and must see video)!
That song will bring a tear to a glass eye.
That's a good song, but I prefer Time After Time.
Her best & my favorite song by her.😊
Arguably the most driving & successful song about "sex for 1," ever.
There's another woman who shares some vocal traits with Cyndi: Dale Bozzio! Check out Missing Persons' Destination Unknown, Walking In L.A., Words, Open Your Heart, I Can't Think About Dancing, Color In Your Life, Metal Hopscotch, Give, Waiting For A million Years, & It Ain't None Of Your Business.
Thank you. I was going to post about Words and Dale Bozzio.
*Mental Hopscotch* Why must you treat me this way?
Yes, please let's have some Missing Persons.
Definitely "Words"... I believe Dale could be considered the OG for those quirky vocals and looks that inspired sooo many people!
@@royoschroeder Fact! Before there was Madonna, Gwen Stefani, and Lady Gaga the was Dale.
Jay with an unintentionally accurate comment when he said Cyndi was "letting her hair down." I'd love to be a fly on the wall when, after reading the comments, they figure out what the lyrics were about LOL.
Many hints in the video for what the song is really about
Cyndi Lauper went there! I bop every single chance I get and I'm not even embarrassed about it! We all bop and Cyndi was really pushing the envelope with this subversive and brilliant song! Love it! Lol
My mom & sister went to her concert around this time, and brought me back a tour shirt. It was turquoise blue and had a picture of Cyndi and a crescent moon on the front, and it said "EVERYBODY BOPS" on the back. Kind of a bold choice for a guy in high school to wear (I remember getting a couple of comments about it from insecure macho dudes), but I really dug it! (And yes, I don't trust anybody who says they don't bop, lol.)
She always knew how to have fun.
My absolute favorite Cyndi Lauper tune! I was really hoping that at least Amber would clue into the "real" meaning of "she bop". But alas I guess you will have to read the comments to find out what bopping means. Would love to be a fly 🪰 on the wall at that moment. 🤣🤣🤣👍💯✌🇨🇦🤣🤣
Probably good they didn't. When they did "I Touch Myself" by the Divinyls, they were pretty uncomfortable.
@@btgiv6009And I love Amber’s reaction to Afternoon Delight, that ah-ha moment. And then when Jay gets clued in. 🤣
They didn't get Sledgehammer either 😀
New sensation, good vibrations, they say I better stop or I'll go blind, can't stop messing with the danger zone, ain't no law against it yet, self service...
get it? 😉😉😉
Such a cheeky song! Love it 🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰
I'll never forget seeing cyndi lauper in concert when I was 19. She pulled me on stage, told me I was cute, and kissed me on the cheek. I have been in love with her ever since.
I saw her in concert here in New Orleans she open for Cher. There are no words to have truly gifted. She is as an artist you have to see her live
I saw the same show in Houston. I think it was November 2002. Cyndi sprained her ankle the night before in Oklahoma City but still put on a hell of a show limping around on a cane.
The thing about Cyndi Lauper, She's So Unusual. :)
Please do “I drove all night”- get vocals are spot on in that
yes, please! One of my all time favourite songs and Cyndi's version IMO is the best one. also the last note she holds is killer... held for so long.
@@bonnielee78 Agreed! I like Roy Orbison's version and I've loved many Celine Dion songs, but Cyndi's version reigns SUPREME!
When this song came out I had no idea that it was about we ladies taking care of things by ourselves. I loved it even more when I figured it out! Cyndi is a savage, I love her!!!!
When "Sisters are Doing it for Themselves" came out, my friend said, "Is this the same meaning as 'She Bop'?" And I said, "No you goofball, this is about women's empowerment." And she said, "So is 'She Bop'!" 😄
@@Johnny_Socko 🤣🤣👍 love that song! Annie Lennox is awesome!
True colors is her masterpiece imo
I saw her in concert in Florida in 1984, with The Bangles as the opening act.
Somewhere j have an “I bop” button from seeing her in concert back in the day- lol
Cyndi also does some seriously powerful songs, too. Her cover of "I'm Gonna Be Strong" is one of her best, and "Sally's Pigeons" is so relevant for this time, and will rip your heart out. It's soooo good.
Her cover of Marvin Gay's "What's Going On" is gorgeous.
Finally someone else is recommending "I'm Gonna be Strong". I've been asking for this one for almost two years now. It's a must. Such powerful vocals, especially at the end. Much love from England 🏴
Y'all know it's a song about female masturbation right?
I've been dying to know if they figured it out!!
It went over my head when I was younger, lol!!!
Masterbingo!
@@candacemay7187 they never comment on comments. i wonder why?
@@joelanderos23 I don't think they even read the comments. Just my opinion.
Cyndi’s paean to self love! My favorite tune by her is her #1 hit: True Colors. You will love it!
Cyndi Lauper - "Change Of Heart" has the coolest sounding drums ever. The Base and Guitar are amazing as well.
Off her first album...lots of great tunes on that one.
The song is somewhat covertly about masturbation (check her animated self pointing at the "Self Service" sign. Also "can't stop messing with the danger zone" the references to going blind....Also "good vibration" is not just a Beach Boys reference)
True colors from Cindy Lauper
I LOVE this song. My favorite of hers. And hell yeah we all bop! 🤭
She is one of my favorites. And this song might be my fav of hers. She is just an Oscar away from being an EGOT as she has Grammys, Emmys, and a Tony. She is a force!! And so much fun!!
Her performance of this song on the Johnny Carson Show is epic 🥰
Before Divinyls with “I Touch Myself,” there was Cyndi boppin’ 😉
She’s a genius! Outstanding singer-songwriter. Incredible live! So versatile and still kicking ass.
This is one of my favorites! I think this one is forgotten often but it's soooo good. You guys she hear "True Colors" by her next.
LOL - I don't think Jay will like this song as much when he finds out what it's about!! They are so naive and innocent.
True Colors is a MUST of hers to listen to
In 1984 I sang this in my all-girl band in college. Always a crowd favorite. I also had a full-size Cyndi poster on the ceiling of my dorm. I just love her.
I’ll never forget seeing her in concert & she climbed on seats into the audience and sang part of this song right in front of us. Just inches away. Very cool
It took like 2 listens when this dropped (as a teenaged boy) and I got it! 70's and 80's music had the BEST metaphores... couldn't outright say things like today! Especially for radio.
not as overt as Divinyls "I Touch Myself" more overt than Oingo Boingo's "Good for Your Soul".
There's a lot of hints in the video 😉
@@kellyrussell9646 Like "self-service" in the cartoon at the gas station . . .
Huge surprise when people realized what this song is about!
Key line to clue one into what this song is about: "They say I better stop or I'll go blind."
80's music was the greatest, wasn't it?? ❤
"Money Changes Everything" is a great song and one of my favorites from Cyndi!
She is so cool. Funny, smart and inspired even Madonna with her sense of fashion. The real deal. And she can sing!!
Her Most POWERFUL MUST HEAR track,, Cyndi Lauper "True Colors" (Official Music Video)
We had so much fun dancing to Cyndi in the '80s! Check out her amazing vocals in her live "Lady Marmalade" duet with Patti LaBelle! You'll appreciate their powerhouse performance.
This was one of my fav songs growing up. A bad day at the after school job and I could come home and bop. Cyndi Lauper just makes me giggle and dance and clear my mood. Still does the trick. I agree with Money Changes Everything as the next one for her.
Ah, Cindy (who should be going into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but whatever). Please play her song You Don't Know and her other song, I Drove All Night (originally co-written by Cyndi for Roy Orbison).
Now that Jann Wenner is out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, maybe Cyndi can finally get her shot.
Ugh, love I Drove All Night - so many people think it's a Celine Dion original
Girls and their fingers. So crass but a catchy tune. A few songs in the 80s touched on the subject of Hey Diddle Diddle. CL jumped on the band wagon and stuck her finger in the pie too. Viva La 80s! Good bless and Bop on!
This was such a fun little BOP!
Well, "bopping" is always a good time. 😂😉
Cyndi embodies creativity, and her voice is fantastic. She’s still a strong performer to this day
Now that you've listened to She Bop, take a listen to Relax by Frankie Goes To Hollywood. It's one of the most, um, "unusual" hits to ever be played on the radio. It was initially banned by the BBC, but it proved to be a #1 song in the UK and a top 10 hit in the US.
I love you guys so much and the fact that the meaning of this song seemed to go over your heads makes me love you even more.
All Through The Night should be your next reaction to the legend Cyndi Lauper
Amber and Jordan you may like (True Colors) by Cyndi Lauper. Keep up with the good work 😎👍. Don't forget to watch (Rocky Horror Picture Show) for Halloween movies.
Cyndi Lauper was always campy, fun, and quirky. This particular song is talking about a certain adult subject matter that really caught the attention of Tipper Gore and her PMRC (Parents Music Resource Council).
I think my favorite two songs from Cyndi Lauper are "Time After Time" & "All Through the Night".
I still have this vinyl album. My all time favorite of hers is Time After Time.
This and Madonna's like a Virginia was my first albums bought at the same time.
Another cameo by pro wrestler Capt. Lou Albano. She was fun!
As well as former WWF/E Women’s World Champion, Wendy Richter. She was the one singing (lipsynching actually) the first line
An underrated tune of hers: 'Money Changes Everything'. I still listen to it regularly.
I always loved this song. When I found out what iit was about, I loved it even more. LOL
Late in the 80's or early 90' s, we saw Cher in concert in Atlanta. Opening act was Cindi Lauper. What a show, when she did her set closing of Girls Just Wanna have Fun, she danced in her rainbow clothes all through the arena. We had my friends elderly parents with us and they were dancing up a storm. So fun!
Can't wait for the comments on this one. if you know you know.
One of the more fun songs by Cindi. She’s so awesome
She is bloody awesome 💯 and a really good human being
love singing this in karaoke LOL LOL we do, in fact, bop!! LOL
EURYTHMICS- 'WOULD I LIE TO YOU'!!!!!!!!!!!
Even though the subject matter is a little risqué - this is still one of my TOP favourite Cindy songs. I'm SO glad you guys finally found it. Could you please check out Good Enough for Me - from the Goonies soundtrack? Much love from Canada!
I love Cyndi Lauper. I was lucky enough to meet her back in 07 when she did the True Colors Tour with Joan Jett, B-52s, Erasure, Margaret Cho, and so many others that I can't remember right off the top of my head. We volunteered at a booth where people could register to vote, and we got to meet her before her set. I was so awestruck at that moment that I couldn't even speak. We just posed for the photo and I walked away. I was so disappointed that I didn't even tell her how much I love her. D'OH.
"Girls just want to have fun" is my favorite and I love to turn it full blast when I play it or hear it on the radio...
Always been a fan of hers....👍
Cyndi was a little more subtle about self gratification in She Bop than Divinyls I Touch Myself but novelty shock songs always sell well and don’t define an artist .
Please give the Divinyls another go . Their catalogue of rock and pop songs are amazing . Try some of their earlier stuff Boys In Town , Only Lonely ( 1982 version ) , Science Fiction or Pleasure And Pain
Please
For a different side of her voice, try “True Colors” or “Time After Time”. Both are amazing!
Sometimes your innocence makes for the most entertaining reactions. I was giddy watching Amber's reactions while really seeming like neither of you understand what the song is about, especially the confused reaction to the self-serve sign. Please, never ever lose that. I love you both for it!
Classic 1980s, leading to My Favorite Late Night TV Talk Show Moment Ever.
From "Later with Bob Costas" in 1986
BOB (enthusiastic): "She bop, he bop and we bop; I bop, you bop and they bop" -I love that, it's so…universal. So empowering.
CYNDI (deadpan; can't believe Bob is *this* thick): It's a song about masturbation, Bob.
BOB (long pause): Oh.
Absolute classic. I had forgotten the little hints in the video, though. ("MasterBingo", "Self-Service", etc.)
Since you continue to show that you like a good song about…self-service, and since I'm still *dying* to get you to acknowledge that Fleetwood Mac existed before Stevie Nicks, why not compromise and play "Rattlesnake Shake", the song where Peter Green teases Mick about Fleetwood passed the time when he couldn't get a date for *two years* ?
(Of course, once Mick became a rich and famous superstar [FM sold more records in the UK in 1969 than the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppeline, etc] instead of "that creepy-looking tall guy", Mick no longer needed to do the Shake. But thats for other songs and other stories…)
I love the whole album she’s so unusual
Wonder if Jay and Amber would be “bopping” as much to this song if they knew what it was about. LOL!
But let’s not bury the lead; best self-pleasure song out there.
I dunno, "Turning Japanese" is pretty great, too! 😏
Oh man, I waited the whole video to see if either of them caught on midway thru (like Amber did in Afternoon Delight), but it's actually kind of sweet that they never got the underlying meaning. Their sincerity is one of the reasons I keep watching. :)
Rock on Cyndi Lauper
