Parts are heating up and drifting. First thing to do is replace all caps before even troubleshooting. After replacing the caps, test it. It just might work. The other thing is to test and see if any transistors are getting hot. Before you replace transistors, check the power supply voltages and bias resistors. If not transistors but tubes, test to see if the tube voltages drift. Old tubes sometimes get gassy and need replaced.
Fundamental constants... Lovely. You can program in the fundamental constants just in case they change! I love your videos - I believe I have a similar sense of humor as you Dave. I am a recent subscriber, and really enjoy your videos! Keep up the great work, from Canada!
I can't remember what I searched for in this case, but I wasn't targeting this. Either it was for Stanford Research gear specifically (which I do occasionally) or it was just a general browse in the Oz test gear section.
These instruments have all kinds of uses in applications where you need very accurate and fast counting of trigger events. It stores the events and produces statistical data based on frequency versus time. One of the most common uses is in the characterization of radioisotopes.
You can use a reverse biased base emitter BJT transistor operated in avalanche mode to simulate a 'dark count' photon counter. It will vary with temperature. I'm currently working on similar devices and I built a circuit that attempts to emulate this particular instrument!! Sure wish we had one though, SRS is the bomb!
I bought an old school 20A Zenith Variac from a few hrs away in the old dart. And it was wrapped up in a cardboard box with the bakelite knob smashed to bits and, as you can probably guess. I told the seller and he couldn't give a shit. And what you've got there, is a LOT lighter than a 20+ kg Variac.
The tested label is just an electrical test (ie PAT - Portable appliance testing). Every piece of mains powered equipment at my uni has one of those labels. 5yr intervals are not uncommon. Seems redundant when the computers are replaced before then anyway. Anyway, label has nothing to do with calibration ;)
when my pm3217 scope came from an ebay user, it was wrapped much better than this but i opened it up and the power plug had completely shattered as at some point in shipping it had been between the weight of the scope and a hard surface. The front panel also isn't attached properly on one side, but I don't think that's from shipping. Still worked with a new plug though. :D
If it is a photon counter, could you hook up a photomultiplier tube to it? Then, you could use to count the photons per second that you get in various "dark" locations: ex. a room with the lights off, inside a box, outside at night, etc.
i think it it might be used to get counts from a pmt. pmts are used in all kinds of particle physic experiments to detect single photons, for example, when a particle hits a scintillator crystal. i have some experience in making scintillator detectors because i used to work for gammasonics in five dock/sydney ;)
I seriously received a laptop wrapped in nothing more than 2 layers of gift wrap with the (wrong) charger just wrapped in with it. AMAZINGLY it worked fine and just had a minor scratch from the plug sitting on top. The seller was probably annoyed at the fact that I won their Compaq nc6400 for £10!
*Looks at the spoiler link in description, sees starting price of $7950* Holy crap! Dave can't even think of any possible use for it, and he buys it! *Hears he bought it for $50* Oh, that makes more sense. If you'd like my opinion on what to do with it, I suggest counting photons :D. Maybe you could mess around with quantum mechanics stuff or something with it. Imagine the reaction of people when you can tell them you did some quantum mechanics experiments.
nice piece of kit you got there mate. try looking for how to go about updating the SRS EPROM/EEPROM Data with a new Version (Not Sure What the latest Version is as of yet).
I've received rack equipment wrapped in a bin bag. It doesn't get worse than that. Makes you wonder how some of these people manage to get any positive feedback.
I purchased a new piece of rack equipment from ebay and one of the rack ears were literally bend at 90 degrees. You'd have to drop it onto pavement to do that, as it was steel!
I used one of those a while back . I was in the NAVY and was in my C skool as I was going to be a Nuclear reactor on submarines . I passed the school and went to my first submarine .I was on SSBN submarines and they go out to sea for 86 days every 90 days I spent 7 years on submarines . I found out that only 10% of the NAVY can go on submarines I guess thats why I had to get a top secret clearance rating . The NAVY send me a quiz every year to make sure I do not talk about it or go bad plac
What does this do? Graph photon intensity over time I assume? This would be cool to use in conjunction with a DPSS laser... you'd get nice harmonics coming off it when switching the laser on :D
Do the delayed choice quantum eraser experiment! I still don't believe the results and would like to see the actual experiment on UA-cam. (Your videos are great! Thanks Dave!)
no.... this is why you don't buy from cheap individual's. There are actual stores on ebay that package everything they sell professionally and charge a cheaper price for the total price of the item to have it delivered to your door than the cost of driving to your local store to buy it. But most people have very little patience and want things NOW.
I need to learn how to search ebay to find these equipments. But maybe that is because I try to find common things like oscilloscopes and function generators.
i bought a 17 kg digital tape unit from ebay , i emailed to stress the importance of good packaging and offered an extra $15 for packaging , It arrived with one layer of bubble wrap . ( maybe 1mm when compressed.) 17kg unit.
i have a (very) old analog scope, and when i follow the instructions in the manual for it's first use, the trace moves across the screen and off the edge, never to be seen again. even with a signal. does anyone know what i can do for it?
There are 2 on Ebay right now, one is 75 bucks and the other is 2,750 bucks. I hope he only paid the former. 3/10/14. Ok he paid 50 bucks, good deal just for the smell.
How do you find all your gear you score on ebay? You always make such nice shots on ebay, but the gear is all different categories. Do you actually search for "Multi-Channel Sacler"?? How do you get them?
Yes, it seems many of your comments are designed to do exactly that, troll me for a response to see how much it takes to get me "fuming". You fail every time.
I know that rs-232 is recommended standard. have you seen Ohio Scientific Charactor sets beyond the first B&W 256 65v, I am still working on a music processor which is to be built on a note processor related naturally to a charactor processor letter processor etc, I don't want more than 64K in my universe and then I don't want more than 650 million in my 7.06 mHz universe greenbook cD-i for Gillian Anderson's biography
8:45 "You can program those in, just in case the fundamental constants change"
Which they did in 2019 .. by an amount WAY below the precision of the instrument though.

That's what ebay is for: "I just got something from ebay, I don't know what it is or what do with it, but hey!"
TheAlternateAir "They are really expensive!" Buys one and has no idea how it works or what it does or what to use it for...
The lab is 50sqm of floor area, with 8ft vertical height if needed!
Fundamental constants... Lovely. You can program in the fundamental constants just in case they change!

My old Texas Insruments Computer from 1979 had an RS-232 Port running Extended Basic. Talk about old school...way cool.!
Sounds plausible, I might have to try this!

Haha the knob test made me giggle, love your comments Dave XD

Dave! I'm surprised you have got full 7.1 Audio. Thanks for that!

The LED idea is interesting. How exactly? photodiode? I thought LEDs were ns fast?
"Just incase the fundimental constants change"
I loled :D
nice piece of kit you got there mate.
try looking for how to go about updating the SRS EPROM/EEPROM Data with a new Version (Not Sure What the latest Version is as of yet).
Send it to Photonicinduction. Maybe he could count something with it lol
Lol yes!
Dave, you get way too excited playing with that knob ;)
Old stiffy (floppy) drive. LOL brings back memories. Now everything is networked
I've received rack equipment wrapped in a bin bag. It doesn't get worse than that. Makes you wonder how some of these people manage to get any positive feedback.
In the world of amateur radio, we'd call it a "boat anchor". Other uses? Retro gaming console?
build a spectrum analyser in the case ;)
a perfect motivation for a neutral feedback, and link the video to the seller!
I first think, that is first Fluke-multimeter what is ever made. Those were big those days.
You had one Job Mr. Clark Lambert...
I purchased a new piece of rack equipment from ebay and one of the rack ears were literally bend at 90 degrees. You'd have to drop it onto pavement to do that, as it was steel!
Basically shove an LED into the input and hit it with a remote control?
Heh, looks to be packed about as well as my used scope was. Except your device came out with considerably fewer dents.
I used one of those a while back . I was in the NAVY and was in my C skool as I was going to be a Nuclear reactor on submarines . I passed the school and went to my first submarine .I was on SSBN submarines and they go out to sea for 86 days every 90 days I spent 7 years on submarines . Somebody need some bad feedback!
I assume you can directly connect a photon counting head (like Hamamatsu H7360) to this device?..
Thanks Dave!)
does it have a little screw somewhere you can turn to adjust the position of the beam? otherwise it may be internal
What i was saying was ... all the other youtube videos doesn't have 7.1 surround audio but this is the first youtube video that has it
only dave would buy a giant piece of kit and fumble with it saying "no idea how to use it"
haha
I'm curious, with all that dumpster diving, mailbag and buying things at ebay, how much place it takes to store that?
turn it into a geiger counter (radiation counter) - PMT and some plastic could do the trick ;)
OK, UA-cam really doesn't like links. Add the w w w and remove the hyphen it strangely adds in the URL.
no.... this is why you don't buy from cheap individual's. perhaps you can flash the EPROM/EEPROM with a EPROM/EEPROM Programmer (Used for Writing New Data to EPROM/EEPROM Chips
Why would you need a printer for a photon counter?
So it wont be long till you have a shipping container in the car park for the overflow storage? :D
I need to learn how to search ebay to find these equipments. But maybe that is because I try to find common things like oscilloscopes and function generators.
This is how you returned those ultra-expensive Agilent scopes, isn't it?
i bought a 17 kg digital tape unit from ebay , i emailed to stress the importance of good packaging and offered an extra $15 for packaging ,
It arrived with one layer of bubble wrap . ( maybe 1mm when compressed.) 17kg unit.
How many manhours on the clock does it take to copy and binder an entire manual? ;)
Ive had $3,000 telescopes shipped to me in a similar packaging . . . With resulting damage that the shipping insurance did not cover.
Use it to test the wave-particle duality of photons. Or something.
hmm, afaik neutrinos are very rare to count... i wonder how u would test a neutrino counter
Dave, you've got the first element of your Home Hadrone Collider? ;)
Will it blend?
i have a (very) old analog scope, and when i follow the instructions in the manual for it's first use, the trace moves across the screen and off the edge, never to be seen again. even with a signal. does anyone know what i can do for it?
A floppy disk drive. The USB socket of it's time. : )
There are 2 on Ebay right now, one is 75 bucks and the other is 2,750 bucks. I hope he only paid the former. 3/10/14. Ok he paid 50 bucks, good deal just for the smell.
how much did you pay for it? dont whige when you pay a buck and 20 bucks postage,
usually for saving measurements
How do you find all your gear you score on ebay? You always make such nice shots on ebay, but the gear is all different categories. Do you actually search for "Multi-Channel Sacler"?? How do you get them?
Yes, it seems many of your comments are designed to do exactly that, troll me for a response to see how much it takes to get me "fuming". You fail every time.
It's for calibrating photon torpedoes if you believe me ask Scotty.
Bingo.
but what r u going to use it for ??
What mixture of metric and imperial units is THIS?
What s it do or what it is for
Sounds like part of a gas chromatograph for chemical mass spectroscopy.
what you would expect from a 50 $ piece of gear?
That's a shockingly twisted interpretation of the phrase lol. I've never heard it used to mean anything of the sort.
Where you get the instruments? Ebay?
Double slit experiment. crystallography. Individual photon laser wireless.
$50??? I would clean it up and resell it.
Let tear it up today.
lol "Decal" can cause some serious withdrawal symptoms... xD
Haha floppy drive at the side.
you could have denied it and made the send it back
Yeaee new video :)
maybe this could do a coincidence detector, for detecting muons. just a thought..
that remind me sagan with it first dso!
You bought eBay?
How much did you buy this for?
fundamental constants: c changes for different medium ;)
Why? Why would you buy this device? Why? I don't get it...
Have you seen this guys history of silly comments on my channel?
Well c is the speed of light in a vacuum... ;)
Probably only good for testing LEDs and photon counting
Count some photons with it, wha ever they are lol. Is it like what the ghostbusters used, wait a min that might be a proton pack.
floppy drive...put games on it! xD
Im sure there's an app for what this expensive device does.
count some photons?
To package something this poorly is to have no understanding of basic physics.
his vídeos are realyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy awsome
Huh?
2:00 I would of gone fcuking mad!!!!!
I'd of wanted my money back saying that it did work.
ol' green screen
good ol' times :_
call that a knife. . .
