Just bought a 1983 Mustang GT Convertible. I'm an 80s kid who loves these cars but took the plunge to buy one that is rust free! These cars are coming up in value now. Buy one now prices are is still affordable compared to the earlier years which are very expensive to buy for most of us. Great video it took me back to a fun time growing up bringing back memories, thank you!! 🙂
I own an 89 LX 5.0 convertable I bought in July of 1990, it has 110,000 miles now, its been driven but always cared for. When I drive it, I know why I bought it. Good documentory
I’ve got an 89 LX convertible as well with 77K miles on it. Always cared for. Always turning heads, even today. Can’t get rid of it. Saving it for my kids.
I loved this video. As a kid that grew up in the 80s and early 90s the Foxbody Mustang will always bring back great childhood memories for me. I also loved that you mixed in some pop culture through the years in this documentary. Thank you for creating this.
I feel the exact same way. I graduated in '93. Anyone who had a foxbody was the man. The sound, the look. Definitely one of my favorites! Another fantastic video.
The Fords expense control freaks had too much power and sandbagged it. The biggest issues were: 1. Too small of brakes and lack of rear disc brakes with the exception of the SVO. If Ford tried a little bit harder rear disc brakes could have been an option. 2. 4 bolt hubs which limited buyers choices for aftermarket wheels, and upgrades to 16”, 17” or larger wheel diameter. 3. Jitterbug rear 4 link suspension which really needed a panhard bar or something to keep the rear axle from lateral movement. 4. Reinforcements to the floor pan under the front seats. In 1987 or 1988 the seat in my 79 Indy Pace Car had started leaning. I looked underneath and the floor pan was cracked really bad. A friend from work welded it up for me.
Yes, they really blew it. When they discontinued th SVO, it would have been a no brainer to transfer the parts to the GT. One reason I hate Ford for doing that even though I drive a Foxbody.
This was definitely worth the wait! Growing up in the 80s I always had a really like the Fox Body Mustang! In fact I had a 80s Hot Wheels Mustang when I was a kid
I'm so happy to see a video on the Fox Body. I am a big fan of the smooth styled late 80s models, along with the horsepower and speed of the legendary 5.0. Fox Bodies have begun to gain popularity as collector cars and value has been increasing more in recent years. I love the sound of a 5 speed manual with the 5.0. Interestingly, the Fox Body Mustang and the C3 Corvette are the longest lived generations of American cars, with both having 15 years of life. I'm waiting for Ford to come out with a modern version of the late 80s/early 90s Fox Body as a next generation Stang, very much like what they did with the 2005 as a modern version of the 1965.
Another great vid, Tofer! On top of being very informative, I really like how you capture the feel of the years/era as the cars evolve over their production runs. Great work as usual!
Shame on UA-cam for hiding these videos away. Great content and video quality. A certified car geek who came of age in the 60’s, I hold April 17, 1964 as a date I will never forget. Your content is on point and accurate.
I was such a fox fan that i got mad in 93 when i started seeing the SN95's running around, and then i rode in one and realised i loved them too, i can love them all, if you're a car person, you can like everything if you want to.
"Tales" is perfect descriptor, this channel offers something much more than a mere car "review", and it just gets better all the time. TCT's are vignettes indeed. We appreciate all the hard work and skill, and emotion, you put into them Mr T!
I have probably owned 4 or 5 Mustang Fox body mustangs and loved them all. I bought my first mustang just before leaving the army in 1970. I was not a fan of the Mustang II however. Great video!
TxCowPoke, I gained plenty of respect for the Mustang II generation after watching Tofer’s earlier video giving it a special feature. be sure to check it out, or watch it again to sink in 😊
Luka doncic is better than lebron james , 🐎🐎🐎🐎 you’re speaking of the SN95 4th Generation. Yes, it was a nice save for the brand. Otherwise we would’ve gotten the Probe. I think all years are nice, including the Mustang II - Tofer helped me improve my opinion about that one 🤣
Luka doncic is better than lebron james , beauty is subjective and in the eye of the beholder. I tend to have a greater affection for rare misunderstood vehicles like the XR4Ti for example. I guess I like the underdog. When a car goes through a transition it’s sometimes painful to watch, but history shows it served a valuable purpose. In spite of all the famous Mustangs in history to celebrate, the SVO is the one I cheer for. PS. Thanks for the back and forth, its been fun 😁
When I think of all the insane, ridiculas, intelligence insulting, moronic, non-informative car "reviews" I've endured and wasted my time on, TOFER deserves a million subs. I know I'm one!
@@thurmar111 excellent choices. i believe each year of the SVO came equipped with a high mount intercooler. the XR4TI stock was always a tad lower in horsepower than the SVO. Ford always played games to keep the GT numbers on top, even though the SVO was more capable.

Thanks for the history summary, good job! It’s nice to see how even in today’s competitive racing they are still a popular platform choice, not unlike the legendary 60’s muscle cars. In April of 94, I purchased a new 93 LX 5.0, 5 spd manual Coupe, black with black/gray interior ....... last of the breed, and I still own it today 👍
I must have seen that ad for the 1987 black GT Hatchback with the red stripe a million times. I told my grandma & both of my uncles who were more like older bros and chevy guys, that's the 1
Like most of your videos, this is great quality content and nothing short of impressive. You've come a long way since the first video and I applaud you for it. The only thing I would add is some kind of narrative at the Mustang vs Probe's scene describing what was the reason for Ford sticking with the Mustang instead of replacing it with the Probe. I know, lots of angry letters sent to Dearborn as well as Mustang fans rushing to the dealerships. There was a whole plot around it. That would've been the 🍒 on top.
Thank you for the video, I am a big fan of the Foxbody Mustang and have owned 3. 1991 GT is currently being brought back to glory, thanks to a strong aftermarket and new restoration parts coming out every year.
The sound of the 5.0 HO 302 Ford V8 w/ Flowmaster or even Magnaflow/Borla exhaust ...WHAT?? NOTHING LIKE IT!🤘The torque from the 5spd was mind-blowing🤯 it would 📌 ya!
The Boss is back, that was awesome. I was 15 and test drove a new red 82 GT at Powel Ford in Ft Lauderdale, Fl. The salesman told me it was a virgin and to take it easy, since it only had 5 miles on it. I didn’t care tho, hell I didn’t have a license yet, just a full beard. I dumped the clutch out of a side street and hit a puddle and tank slapped it 4 or 5 times because I was too invincible to let off. It’s funny watching a salesman, go back and forth across the rear seat, in the rear view mirror. If you weren’t around then or not a car guy, you wouldn’t understand how odd it was to be able to do a burnout in a car off the showroom floor, without going in reverse first😜. The Mustang II saved the pony car but the Fox Mustang is probably single handedly responsible for 700 hp cars of today. Ford started making power while keeping emissions low. I know 160 hp doesn’t sound like much but it was a big step up from the 255 V8. We haven’t gone backwards since. The current Hp wars started in 1982 and have been going on for almost 40 years now.
I remember these cars fondly my grandmother was a race car enthusiasts and only drove sports cars untill her 70s. She had a 84 mustang then a 87, in 1991 she got a probe then another after the body changed. Unfortunately she started buying station wagons after that to accommodate her growing number of grandchildren.
Topher, once again an amazing video with great accurate content. But the visuals; out of this world! So witty and sometimes subtle but impactful and hilarious.
Topher you sir are icon of UA-cam! Thanks for taking me back in time with the history of all the fine and not so fine vehicles you showcase on your channel.
Loved the cultural references - commercials - etc.! VERY creative and enjoyable - and despite considering myself well-informed on Mustang evolution, I had never seen the "squarish" initial concepts of the Fox Mustang before!
Wow! I was sitting at home & thinking to myself, "I wish I could watch a video on foxbody mustangs & the history behind them. Hey, maybe I'll find one on UA-cam. Hopefully." And you can imagine how glad I was to find this informative masterpiece. Thank you Tofer, so much . Your video left me feeling extremely satisfied regarding my craving for a little extra 'foxbody information' . INSTANT SUB!
The Bronze with the titanium lower accents. I've never seen that color combo & I'm in love. Always preferred the two toned version of the GT with titanium bottom if possible
Hey there. Another awesome video! I remember when I first saw a Fox Bodied Ford Mustang. I was 1980, I was 7 yrs old. At the time I didn't find it as attractive as its prececessor, the Mustang II. But like many things, as it progressed, I began to like it. :)
What made these so great was the huge selection of options, wheels, colors, trims, upholstery and all that...everything from a luxury oriented coupe to a performance hatch, all from one car model. Mustang could be configured so many ways it's pretty hard not to find one variant that would please everyone. Today's vehicles with one style, minimal wheel selection, one interior color and only drab exterior colors......blah. if we could put today's engines and drivetrains into the fox Mustang style and choices would be awesome
1979s still got 302s...the agonizing 255 debuted in 1980....TRX was optional as early as 79, too....I had a 79 Ghia coupe 5.0 4 speed with TRX, back in the day...kind of a rare car now.
Had an 88' GT in Gray with Titanium on bottom.Same as the brochure car!Bought new in May of 1988 it was the best $13700 I ever spent.Only had it for a few years but enjoyed all 48000 miles I put on it.
In 1979 I went to my local Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer and order a Mercury Capri Turbo. Waited six weeks for it to come in. When the car came in, it was not a Turbo! Asked dealer what happened and he said they were having trouble with the Turbos, so it was a regular 2.0 four cylinder! Told dealer I didn’t want that. So, reordered the car with the 2.8 V-6 with 4 speed. That car served me well until I traded it in on a 1984 5.0 Cougar.
That Hatch GT at exactly 28:00 is beautiful!!! I think it's titanium bronze but it might be that dark grey metallic or brownish gray rare 1s. They were customer requested. They show the color codes in this video, just gotta pause it
Tofer you continue to present these great videos. These are top quality, entertaining, informative videos. I know you're also the owner of a few FoMoCo products...so its fun for you as well. Keep up the great work. I still absolutely love the look of Foxbody Mustangs. Ive actually never ridden in one except my Aunt's 88 red 2.3 automatic coupe maybe 20 years ago. I'll own one someday :-)
Wow, this is really good work here. Kudos. I’m too poor to afford it, but I’d love a 66 GT fastback K code car. I’m not a huge fox body fan, but I really liked the ASC McLaren bodied cars.
I had a friend who bought a brand new 86 G.T. , with its 5.0 motor we felt muscle was back . It was a great car until he had an accident and it literally was ripped in half ! He walked away without a scratch, tough car!
Absolutely wonderful video 👍like all the previous ones I’m gonna watch it multiple times, this is my 2nd favorites gen my number 1 is the II which is In my top 5 favorites car....
@@TofersCarTales i have a real soft spot for these cars , but still im not sure what exactly evoked the emotions out of me, usually i just stuff them down to a dark place like a man , it could have been the thought of a probe becoming a mustang or possibly me having low testosterone? Either way it was a brilliant 👏 video and i look forward to more content.
Never liked the 87 gt tail lights. My next door neighbor was a sales mgr at plaza Ford in MD. That lucky guy got several saleen's to drive as one of his perks. What a car! It was very hard for me to believe that was the same engine and transmission as the regular gt. Drove like it had Velcro tires
I was always a blue oval guy and wanted a mustang ,,bought a 76 mustang 2 . Liked to turned me away but the 79 Indy pace car came out and I bought it . Had when I was married and loved it. 5.0 two barrel but light enough to be respectable in the day
I like the Mustang II, and yes it did save the Mustang, otherwise the Mustang would be dead. I love the razor hubcaps in 1983. Ugh Superman IV. Fox Mustangs looked great in yellow.
@@TofersCarTales yay! Thank you! I love the incredible technology of the MN12. Bought a 1991 sport a couple years ago, and was rejected from a thunderbird collector's club because "it doesn't exist". It's really a shame to see the way these cars have been forgotten, especially with their impressive performance
Thanks' for the video, it helped me understand my 1984 LX convertible as it has the 5.0 HO engine but it's the EFI/auto, it says that it was an option over the standard 5.0 4bbl / stick , the car was also ordered in Triple White and all power trim.
If people could vote for favorite video on UA-cam, this would be up there for me! I think I Love My Car! What did Queen sing, I'm In Love With My Car 🚗 😍 😩
The music this morning, touched me to my soul when I was watched. Extraordinary nostalgic coolness. I was born in 1982 and I can imagine what it was like for these cars coming out and what it was like for the people enjoying them. I own a 94 GT and I love it! Great music! Where do you get it? Purely instrumental nostalgic past feeling music!
Great video! Just one very minor correction, when you say in 1991 "The GT Model received 5 spoke 16" wheels." All V8 models did. I bought my 1991 LX 5.0 2 door in September of 1990 with the 5 spoke "Pony" wheels, identical to my older brother's GT. The best car I ever owned!
5.0 was the car you bought after high school when you got your first good job and your parents only wanted 100$ a month for rent and food :-) Ahh,cruising the avenue on the weekend with your friends, trying to throw that "E",while drinking the sophisticated wine coolers or the ultra bad-ass Milwaukees Best. (don't drink and drive) Good times...
It had to be the longest video of Tofer's YT career, as "the Probe fiasco" (it was supposed to be the next Mustang, but the cries from the whole US Car Culture derailed the plans and was sold as a separate model for 2 generations) made Ford keep the Fox Mustang for 4 more years. At 14 years it was the longest lasting variant of the Fox Body group and the longest lasting Mustang as well. Now, it'd be fitting that soon after I've typed this (Father's Day June 20th, 2021) somehow a LEAK appeared on the next (7th) ICE'd generation Mustang that will replace today's S550 (6G) model. It has been rumored that this will be THE LAST ICE'D GENERATION MUSTANG after which it'd be merged with the 2G Mach-E BEV in at least 2029. The only 2 given things are that it will be BOTH LONGER AND HIGHER than the S550 as there was an article earlier in 2021 from the newspaper in Windsor, ON (there's an engine factory there) that Ford execs pact with the Union the building of a 6.8L (415 cid) V8 ICE for both Mustang and F-150. You can figure the F-150 app is the "Raptor R" and the Mustang's the GT350 and 500. This engine (could this be the result of the rumored 7.0L 7X DOHC engine?) won't physically fit with a factory warranty on the S550 body, but would for one that is both longer and have at least a higher hood.

That Hatch GT at exactly 28:00 is beautiful!!! I think it's titanium bronze but it might be that dark grey metallic or brownish gray rare 1s. They were customer requested. They show the color codes in this video, just gotta pause it
The first car my parents owed was a yellow fox body, I wish they would have keep it.
There is nothing like slamming gears in a Foxbody Mustang. If you want one I suggest you start looking now, the prices have started to skyrocket.
Bought a 93 cobra new.... still one of my favorites
Another excellent video, Tofer!
Wow, this is really good work here. Kudos.
I’m too poor to afford it, but I’d love a 66 GT fastback K code car.
I’m not a huge fox body fan, but I really liked the ASC McLaren bodied cars.
Spectacular video -- you're definitely one of the best!
Totally awesome!
I had a friend who bought a brand new 86 G.T. , with its 5.0 motor we felt muscle was back . It was a great car until he had an accident and it literally was ripped in half ! He walked away without a scratch, tough car!
Thanks for making this I loved it!
Absolutely wonderful video 👍like all the previous ones I’m gonna watch it multiple times, this is my 2nd favorites gen my number 1 is the II which is In my top 5 favorites car....
This makes me wanna cry😢 nice work!
So glad you enjoyed! But why cry?
@@TofersCarTales i have a real soft spot for these cars , but still im not sure what exactly evoked the emotions out of me, usually i just stuff them down to a dark place like a man , it could have been the thought of a probe becoming a mustang or possibly me having low testosterone? Either way it was a brilliant 👏 video and i look forward to more content.
@@TofersCarTales Cause you make emotional nostalgic videos man!
5.0 two barrel but light enough to be respectable in the day
Yet another awesome tofer video! Gotta do a Camaro/Firebird.
Excellent Work!
I like the Mustang II, and yes it did save the Mustang, otherwise the Mustang would be dead. I love the razor hubcaps in 1983. Ugh Superman IV. Fox Mustangs looked great in yellow.
I love this! Any chance we'll see an MN12 Thunderbird video? And if we do, will it include the mythical 1991 Sport model?
The MN12 has a surprisingly sad story behind it. Definitely on my list though! 😊
Also Heads and Carb was changed in 83. Carb was 4bbl in 83-5, and heads changed again in 85, along with roller ready, Cam is roller too
🎥 just getting started🍿👀
❤️🐎 (I will comment afterwards)
Thanks' for the video, it helped me understand my 1984 LX convertible as it has the 5.0 HO engine but it's the EFI/auto, it says that it was an option over the standard 5.0 4bbl / stick , the car was also ordered in Triple White and all power trim.
If people could vote for favorite video on UA-cam, this would be up there for me! I think I Love My Car! What did Queen sing, I'm In Love With My Car 🚗 😍 😩
Well done!
My first ride as a newborn was in a Foxbody and I really want to own one. Long live the 5.0!!!! #dearbornassemblyplant
The music starting at 11:00 minute mark is marvelous!
Music's great in these episodes I have watched
Who done the music
Great video.
Great video
You should do more videos like this
Top Video! 👏
My favorites are the Cobra trimmed early models, and SVO and GT models of model years later. Vroom vroom
Agreed. The Cobra is my favorite fox body.
302 in 79, 255 in 80-82(82 auto v8 only)
i was just scrolling to see if anyone else caught this minor oops in an otherwise excellent video.
always wanted one
My brother had an 86 GT convertible 5.0
The 87 reminds me of the SN95
My dad bought a 1980 could brand new. Miss that car.
Nice, wonder if you'll cover the SN95, which is essentially an evolution of the Foxbody.
I wish the svo continued to 87 and got the dohc setup they were working on. Rumored to be 275hp
Just the facts man, less music video would be nice.
I love the 79 model Mustangs...they were on their way, and are so light. A modern V8 really makes them fast as f***
