    My mum was feeling particularly depressed after my dad died as she cut the hedge of the front garden. It was a job my dad always did so it was dredging up sad memories. The Red arrows passed over and released a few seconds of smoke. She thought it was specifically for her and it brightened her day. They may not be in combat when they display, but they represent the morale of a nation.

    I lived at RAF Scampton in the late 70's. My Dad flew vulcans and was OC 617 squadron for 2 years. Great memories. Sad to see the old place being slowly shut down. I saw where we lived in your video. Just fantastic.

    I spent 3 yrs. at RAF Holbeach bombing range (68-71). When the Vietnam war was going on - pilots from Lakenheath used to "flybies" at 25 ft. AGL in their F 100"s. on our "wooden tower" (Capt Dave Jenny). Those were the days!!! ☢☢

      Absolutely correct Chris, and you can also see that it was huge in terms of accomodation as the Mess housed hundreds of Officers (mainly pilots; navigators and engineering officers) during WW2. A very busy, bustling Station in it's heyday. So sad to see it like it it is now.

  • @Dalesmanable

    I was there in the 80s. Such a lovely station. It reeked of its past history and travelling around the local area I could really feel the aura of Bomber Country, seeing everywhere I went the names of past bomber stations. So many great pubs in the surrounding villages and Lincoln was such a happy place.

    • @ALWResearchTeam

    • @Dalesmanable
      @Dalesmanable 10 місяців тому

      @@ALWResearchTeam Yes. Sad, but times change and we have to look forward. The RAF has now only roughly a third of the people it had when I joined and the list of stations I served at but were given up is long (Laarbruch, Gutersloh, Wildenrath, Rheindahlen, Scampton, Church Fenton, Bentley Priory, . . . ) let alone those I stayed at fleetingly. These places are still alive in my memories though.

      @@ALWResearchTeam I don't unfortunately, I was only 6 when we lived there on the married quarters, I remember watching the Lightning aircraft on the runway at the time, what a noise they made. It was a very family-oriented place as I recall. I enjoyed your film on RAF Laarbruch, I was there as a child as well, I have vivid memories of that base, best time ever as an RAF child. On a side note, there's an old abandoned naval leadership school outside of Bath called HMS Royal Arthur, I did my leadership training there in 1987, that may also be worth a visit.
