They're not even bad. Beyond the Gate, Call of the Kraken are both pretty good. And Varg himself said these are basically demos with shitty sound quality as he gets back into playing and using new software.
In my opinion Varg has come back to it because there has been a pretty energetic Zoomer revival of the Black Metal genre as a whole - also a reason for him to suddenly appear on Tik Tok as well. He's always liked the attention. I think he rediscovered his own music through that new lens and is trying to mimic that with these new releases. I've found 'The Land of Thule' quite solid to be honest, but only 'The Call of the Kraken' has been worth adding to my playlist so far.
Didnt even know about this thing until now Some of the tracks are decent, but they all sound so raw and not raw as in "Raw Black Metal" but raw as in "sounds like a demo" way, and it felt extremely hypocritical to see him play black metal again, and make a tiktok account after all that these twitter rants about quitting metal, burying black metal legacy, retiring from the internet and rejecting "degenerate internet culture"
I actually kinda dig them, they aren't like top tier by any means but there is some interesting layering going on. I like the bass presence quite a bit too. It feels like Umskiptar to me.
Okay, so I have a few (or several) thoughts. I got recommended one of those new tracks here on YT. I didn't listen to it, and had no interest in doing so, as I am not a fan. However, I saw that it said "Burzum NEW" as the artist name (like "Burzum NEW - Topic"). And I thought that was kinda funny. Because of this video, I skimmed parts of two of the tracks in question. I kinda wish I hadn't, but I'll get to that in a moment. The first was "The Nature of the Gods." Seems like just some piano stuff and dialog/ vocal samples (?). I then skimmed, "The Call of the Kraken." Now, I'm admittedly not the "target audience," but it didn't seem all that great, and sounds like you were spot on with your comments. To get to the rest - isn't Varg fash? Like potentially straight up fash? Even if I had any interest, that would make it even lower. And I kinda wish I hadn't bothered listening, because I don't want to support him in even that small way. Though granted, it is a very little thing. There's also what he went to prison for, ofc. To be clear, I'm not very into metal. I like/ listen to/ have listened to some metal, but yeah. I do like a lot of music, though. Like, a lot. Not to sound hipsterish, but I think that's truer for me than your average person that says it, haha. Speaking of industrial - I love industrial. Though I mean things that are closer to actual industrial. I find a lot of "industrial rock" and "industrial metal" often aren't very industrial at all. And it's annoying that so many people think those are what industrial itself is. In fact, getting into electro-industrial is what really got me into electronic music. I played guitar for a good while, but after that, I got into synths and other electronic instruments, and *much* prefer them. That being said, Varg claiming he was done with guitar stuff for "ideological reasons" is absolutely hilarious. It also obviously wasn't true. What a weird man.
I heard the "Kraken" track but that is it. Now that you mention more tracks I will need to investigate them. Can the songs be worse than any other Dungeon Synth records? Dungeon Synth is like experimental Harsh Noise where there are more practitioners than listeners. I will shall get back to this thread after I have heard more. The "Kraken" track seemed like a mix of ambient of some kind with his familiar guitar work as on the Fallen album, but did it did not sound like the worst minimal Black Metal attempts at iambient such as Neptune Towers.
Maybe Varg finally realized what a meme was, and realized hes not remembered for being this serious brooding feminine character. And wants to change that, knowing how petty he can be. But imo all the new music just furthers the joke.

I like the tracks but this is nowhere near my favourite (actually second least favourite) although this album is good, although it's not well done. Beyond the gate is definitely an improvement, seems like he got the hang of drum programming by that one. If he did this in the studio it'd sound way better He talked about it on his Twitter where I follow him so I knew he was gonna do it. I'm glad he's doing it although 'back to the shadows' doesn't hit the same at all. He did this record because writing about burzum inspired him to do it again I definitely doubt it's for money But yeah, good album
I think it's a great album, however I wish he would have worked a little but more on the album cover and released it under Burzum, without the stupid (NEW). I don't know why he did that.
First thing I've heard of this, honestly, so I had to go check. The one thing that comes to my mind is the question: "is this really confirmed as being Varg?" The music seems to deliver quite some winks and nods to the earlier stuff, but in a kinda ham-fisted way for sure, but it sounds so simple, almost first draft, compared to the times of "Hvis lyset tar oss" or "Filosofem". What really had me scratching my head were the lame titles and the totally different vocal approach. It's no longer that demonic peacock screech from the 90's, but this lame run-of-the-mill black metal croak that I do not recognize as him. The way these tracks sound had me thinking of that fake Defecation album that came out some years ago, which was kinda the same level.
It’s a strange one! I feel the same way. Varg’s X account assures us this is genuine, but is that enough? The whole thing is very bizarre. I’d forgotten all about that Defecation business!
In my opinion, like others say, he’s just bankrupt. I mean, he doesn’t have a real job that provides a steady income and some people willingly avoid financially supporting him (which I also try to do, for obvious reasons). I suppose that he couldn’t get 100% of the royalties from his actual Burzum account so he made this Burzum New thing to be able to get 100% of the royalties and therefore make more money. It might also be a marketing strategy because the stupid “Burzum New” name makes people curious about the change. About the music being his or not, I honestly think it’s his because he’s talked about it and I don’t see why it shouldn’t be his, the guitar is most definitely the “Roots Rock” guitar from Garage Band with the treble thingy activated, and the vocals sound like they’re made by him (I suppose). It sounds like he’s done one layer of spoken words and some layers of whispering because he can no longer do vocals like the did them before jail, which makes sense. The only thing that might make the bankruptcy theory sound untrue is the fact that you need money to publish books (as I’m pretty sure that all of his books are self published because who the heck wants to publish them anyways)
This is very likely the case - good spot with the particular GarageBand preset lol Regarding his books costing money I’m assuming he exclusively uses Amazon KDP which requires no money, it’s print on demand or ebook only. From some of the spelling mistakes made in the recent black metal book that have been posted online, it doesn’t seem that he has hired an editor either.
@@linesinwax4996 oh ok, I didn’t know about this Amazon feature, it makes a lot of sense now. Also I recognised the garage band guitar because I randomly play with garage band when I’m bored so I’m very familiar with some of the instruments 😂
