About 30 years ago i used to fish Cyprus heavily feed the mullet on bread then live bait one further out the Barracuda's used to come in and smash the shoal up then sometimes pick the live bait.
That sounds awesome! The mullet I saw in the harbour were pretty big and weren’t fussed on the bread I’d put out for them. The fishing seemed very difficult but I really enjoyed it.
Yeah, unfortunately our sea is a bit dead. Gave up sea fishing about 15 years ago. Here you can enjoy yourself only in the reservoirs. Next time you are in Paphos, go to Kannaviou dam for largemouth bass.
It’s dead not because of overfishing. It’s because there are no nutrients in the water and no currents. Not only are there no fish here, there are no bird. Remember that the Mediterranean Sea, like the Black Sea, was once a lake. Here most fish sold in the market are farmed in big pens. In America my dad and uncles had big shrimp boats. When we caught squid octopus, and amberjack and barracuda too, we threw them back. No one ate the. Here they eat these things because there is no other living thing out there.
Hi, i grew up as a kid for a few years on the island dad was armed forces in dhekelia, if you want to get into the mullet, heres how. tie around 8-12 size 12 hooks each a few inches apart so you have around 1.5 feet length of hooks tied to line. Buy bread rolls, wrap the hooks around the bread rolls dip the bread rolls for a second to give a little casting weight, and put it out as far as you can get without tearing through the bait. we could get 70'ish yards on a good cast. sure fire way to get into the mullet. The cypriots i was friends with always said "the sea around cyprus is a BIG fish sea, go and fish for the big fish". personally seeing sharks going 4-600 pounds, swordfish, tuna, there is a lot of fish in the sea, you just have to be in the right place.
That sounds really cool .. I’d definitely try something else if I was to return that’s for sure. I was pretty limited of what I could do with a 7-30g travel rod but I still enjoyed it! Thanks for watching buddy!
@@johnjacob563 the power station outside of dhekelia, the water is really warm there, seen double figure thick lipped mullet. thats a real challenge, there used to be a small jetty you could access. please be very careful swimming i saw two people killed probably by the same fish in a period of three-four weeks on that part of the coast.
Thanks bud 👍 yeah, its defiantly shocking on the fishing front makes me feel extremely lucky with what we have on offer, so you won't hear me complaining anytime soon. wish i took my camera with me the first morning it was carnage lost a barracuda probably about 5lbs+ only a few yards out slack lined me a beauty after giving me the run around. il have to make sure the next family trip has a little more on offer with the fishing side of things. thanks for checking it out!
@@FISHISLANDTV Yeah shame about the barracuda. There are some good fish to be had over there but i think it can be tough going trying to find them. Most of the locals only seem interested in float fishing. I'll probably give it a go over in Paphos sometime next year when visiting my Mum.
Oh definitely mate I would perhaps I was unlucky … I’d say small lures and small baits with light gear for maximum enjoyment .. take some squid jigs the harbour area is full of squid cuttle and octopus apparently.. I just never tried !
@@FISHISLANDTV Going after squid would definitely be a good idea yeah! Still good fun catching some smaller species and those wrasse have some crazy colours eh.
Yeah it’s definitely worth a squid bash matey .. I’m going to go this week iv not been yet .. ahh the wrasse were great be class getting them around 5lbs would make some great pictures I’d imagine !
it was great in the sun bud unfortunately the fishing isn’t the greatest out there and now I’m back on home soil I have big swells and a strong breeze to contend with.. oh the joys. Thanks for checking out the video it’s much appreciated!
I'm in Paphos in a few weeks time. I'm bringing a telescopic rod and lures. Hopefully I can catch some fish. Got a question, are you allowed to fish in harbours? Was thinking of fishing at St Georges.
il be honest matey I wasn’t sure at first but I googled the harbour you want to fish and it doesn’t seem like a boxed in marina so I’m guessing that you can. you may find that it’s more productive early mornings with small metals. it’s fairly shallow in most places and a bit snaggy but if I was going back I’d definitely go with lrf gear !
No matey if you decided to fish the fresh water lakes/reservoirs than I believe you do. But just turning up to the local docks or whilst fishing from on the rocks etc etc I’m pretty sure I right when I say no you don’t. I believe it’s similar to the UK in the sense if you were netting or anything that might be considered commercial then you would need a license. if your headed Paphos area I recommend LRF tactics for the smaller stuff and perhaps try some larger surface lures like patchinko 140 or 125 from rocks behind the castle. if you manage to grab a minute to head to the fishing shop there (fish hunter) then grabbing some worm or maggots like I did will help you get your fix if nothing bigger is about. Best of luck buddy I hope you have a great trip! Tight lines!
What month was this mate? I went in October last year an my boat fishing trip was cancelled 3x because of thunder storm and ruff seas. Spoke to a guy spinning down by the castle I was very jealous to say the least. Great videos by the way on just stumbled across you..Subscribed 👍
This was also in October matey. I wish I did more spinning at the back of the castle. I’d say small metal lures would be the way to go next time for sure if I revisit. Sorry to hear about your boat trip too that’s an awful shame! in all honesty though I don’t believe that there’s much there in the way of fish to be caught from the shore hence why I scaled down on the gear and enjoyed the smaller stuff. cheers for the Sub it’s much appreciated!
@FISHISLANDTV Mad! I went at the end of October the sea certainly wasn't that calm on most days. Yea not much but I was suprised to hear the guy was spinning for barracuda 🐊. Defo need to invest in a rigged and ready suitcase rod for next time 😃
I live in Paphos. That harbor is supposed to be a preserve. No fishing allowed. I do see people fish occasionally. Police say nothing, because the number one characteristic of Cypriots is indifference.
I was informed that the only place that was out of bounds for fishing was along the promenade between amongst the swimming areas. There’s were lots of people fishing in the harbour area and there was no signage whatsoever. The guys in the local fishing shop informed me that there was no regulation to fish inside the harbour area either. Thanks for watching

Glad it was helpful buddy.
The fishing isn’t exactly off the scale but you can still get your fix out there if needed.

If there is no regulation or policy that says fishing is prohibited at any harbour in Cyprus then it is legal
Been twice no fish at all. Never saw any big mullet. All talk talk.
When did you go bud.
I was there around this time of year and there was quite a few good ones feeding around the boats etc etc.
