      No, what’s worse is when you realize you’ve JUST saved, but it was AFTER the mistake you made, so you need to move back to a previous save 2 hours ago. (Like the famous Skyrim ‘load and die’ clips)
      Same result, but it feels so much worse.

      Christ died for your sins and rose on the third day, showing that anyone who trusts in him for salvation, will have everlasting life.

    I don't agree with this title. Earlier in this episode, Ro Laren met with Picard at a bar and told him that she was having mixed feelings about the operation and was unsure if she could go through with it, and Picard basically strongarmed her into doing it. In this scene, Riker indicates that Ro felt regret about letting Picard down. I think that Picard is feeling regret in this scene for not handling this situation better, and losing one of his people as a result.

      Um yes there is, when the Cadassians provoke Starfleet don't diffuse the situation with diplomacy and appeasement, but let a shooting war start… and *invite the Klingons.*
      Starfleet has much more advanced combat ships by now (Akira class and all the post Wolf 359 models) and can just take out the Cadassian fleet in space without having to worry about ground combat. And with the addition of the Klingon fleet it will be overwhelming victory.
      In addition having the Klingons fight side by side will help the Alliance and stability in the Klingon Empire - a good war every once in a while is necessary to blow off steam and give the hotheads something to shoot at besides each other, their leaders … *or their allies.*
      The Federation Klingon alliance takes out Cadassian fleet forces fast, scaring the hell out of any rival powers by showing that they would face both "Empires" in any conflict.
      As well, once the fleet is neutralised Cadassian planets world surrender immediately to the Federation rather than risk ground invasion from the Klingons.
      A good cop/bad cop routine.
      Surrender to the nice Federation (where quality of life will probably improve) or face bloodthirsty Klingons in hand to hand combat (after they orbitaly bombard your planet).
      It will be similar to the end of Germany in WW2, where they were running to surrender to the American/commonwealth forces ahead of the advancing Soviets.

      They were colonists when the conflict began; colonist means they cam from somewhere else before they were here.

      A guerilla action against the Cardies is only going to fuel their xenophobic tendencies.

    This was the saddest moment of my life as a Trekkie.

    • @martynstembridge7714
      @martynstembridge7714 6 років тому +1

      I know how you felt Nick, Ro was a very important character to me too. But if you think about it we were actually quite lucky to get the send-off we did end up seeing.
      I'm sure I read an interview many years ago that revealed that by this point Forbes wasn't really interested in coming back anymore, and it took some convincing to get her to make one final appearance. It was a terrific episode, giving Ro the spotlight in a big way, AND it was the penultimate episode in the final season. The character came very close to never coming back ... but she went out in triumphant style.
      After Ro's fantastic involvement in 'The Next Phase' I couldn't wait to see what would happen next ... little did I know that apart from a few seconds at the beginning of 'Rascals', she would vanish until 'Preemptive Strike'. More than a two year gap, but worth the wait. Ro was never destined to be an officer, she was too much of a free spirit, and her decision to betray Picard was the right thing for her. I think in time Picard would see that too.

    • @TheSaneHatter
      @TheSaneHatter 6 років тому +1

      I know about the backstory to Forbes' final appearance, actually, but thanks nonetheless.
      For me, the potential sadness is the destruction of the Maquis, a few years later, and Ro's probable death in the process. I know that the DS9 novels suggested otherwise, but that's only secondary canon.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 6 років тому +1

      To me it seems implausible Ro would still be alive after the Dominion war. It was made clear the Maquis were wiped out by the Jem'Hadar, aside from that group Eddington had gathered, and it was clear she was not with them. And assuming the Federation had arrested her, it's unlikely she would have been released from prison for a very long time, not to mention would never be wearing a uniform again.

    • @TheSaneHatter
      @TheSaneHatter 6 років тому

      As I said, there was a whole set of non-canon DS9 novels that showed her surviving, and they dealt with exactly those issues: Ro was shown as having barely survived and joined the Bajoran, rather than Federation, military after Picard got Starfleet off her back. But that's just one possibility.

      That was only an early idea, and never pursued seriously, as there was too little character development (just two episodes) for Ro Laren by the time DS9 started, and she was too young to be in a romance with Odo.
      But Ro Laren's departure from TNG was the perfect setup for Voyager, which is why it was done exactly this way as we see in this video here. But in the summer between the two shows (summer of 1994), Michelle Forbes declined. A shame, as I like her much more than B'Elanna Torres (and she is the same age as Robert Duncan Neill, whereas Roxann Dawson is much older). Remember that Ro Laren + Nick Lacarno (Tom Paris) was a very natural romance of similar personality types.

    • @Helbore

      +to g She was seriously considered for DS9, but Michelle Forbes had an on-off relationship with the producers. I'm not sure the full details were ever revealed, but she had issues which scrapped her position on DS9. Then things got better and the possibility of being on Voyager came up. Then things went sour again and she declined.Trek is actually full of weird little behind-the-scenes oddities like this. For instance, you mentioned Nick Locarno. The official reason the character was changed to Tom Paris was that the producers believed Nick had gone to far to be redeemable. The real reason, which came out much later, was that they didn't want to have to pay royalties to the writer of "The First Duty," for every episode of Voyager.Also, Gates McFadden's exit from TNG is an unpleasant story, if you know that behind-the-scenes tale.

    Then we have Sisko, who in a similar situation flew into a rage until he got his revenge (or in his mind: justice). Would have been slightly more interesting if they went the angle of Sisko actually taking things too far and losing, as opposed to the conclusion of him taking things too far, winning, and getting away with it.

      that can't be it. "In the Pale Moonlight" was one of the best Star Trek episodes. Sisko didn't rage there - not much. I think he's talking about the episode when Sisko poisoned a Maqui planet, but that was calculated action as well.
      What episode could he be talking about?

    • @rahn45
      @rahn45 9 років тому +9

      PetersaberHD
      Yeah I was referring to how Picard handled a personal betrayal compared to how Sisko handled a personal betrayal. Sisko basically committed mass genocide on a planetary scale using a biological weapon of mass destruction. Course you could say all the colonists got out safely, I mean surely the colonists had enough ships to evacuate the hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of people right? Even if not a single soul died, there was the matter of using a chemical weapon; which you'd think would be considered illegal, a war-crime, or something that might end up with a court-martial. If it's something that kills humans, odds are it's going to kill other animals as well (devastating the ecosystem). Course instead you got the "They traded planets, so everything is okay." logic in the end. That or "no one messes with Sisko, not even the Federation."

    A very great scene with Captain Jean-Luc Picard's look on his face. He was betrayed by Ro Laren, he put his trust into her and thought she bettered herself. I do understood why Ro Laren joined the Maquis cause they were dealing with the Cardassians and she and a lot of other Bajorans lost a lot of loved ones to the Cardassians when they occupied Bajor.

Such incredible scenes and yet no words uttered by Picard.

      My headcanon is that they're all on separate pads for encryption & security purposes.
      Think about it. Modern iPads can do a lot more than the pads in TNG, but they're about as secure as a paper door with a chocolate lock. A de facto military organisation like Starfleet, the vanguard of the largest power in the alpha/beta quadrants, has to pass information about it's deployments and statuses and analyses and operations on these pads whilst keeping them out of the hands of the romulans, Cardassians, Dominion, etc.
      So if a modern iPad can access all the information known to humankind and still have enough processing power left over to function as a mobile, notepad, library, calculator and gaming console, and a pad the same size from 300 years in the future has only been demonstrated to hold, at most, a few page's worth of text and graphs, then what's the extra circuitry being used for?
      24th century firewalls, that's what.
      And storing all the information on different pads means that, even if the enemy does manage to crack one somehow, they only get a very, very, *very* small piece of the picture.

    There is an important scene earlier where Ro and Picard meet to discuss the developments and Picard sees that she's wavering. Its why Riker was added, but he also tells her (and I am not exact quoting so forgive me) if you aren't sure where your loyalties lie, let me know and we will pull you out.' Basically 'if you're going Maquis, be honest with me, we will end the op, I will send you home and you can sort this out WHEN not in the middle of an operation.'
    And that's why he is beside himself pissed. 1) he saw this coming and let it play out. 2) he trusted her, having given her the out and she telling him 'i can do this', to do her duty and put her personal feelings aside. 3) he doesn't know if she made that decision when they were talking or at the trigger pull. If its the former, oh fuck you. If its the latter, why did you wait to sort this out so long.
    I don't think Picard has an issue with 'you joined the Maquis'. No, while he doesn't agree with their behavior, this is a 'personal truth' situation I feel. He will do his duty, if starfleet tasks him, of apprehending Maquis forces but its' not personal.
