Saying that Cyndaquil and Totodile are some of the worst starters is absolute blasphemy and I will not stand for it.
Chicorita is trash though
Chicorita sucks..... So does Totodile.... Cyndaquis isn't great, but it's the only halfway decent fire type you'll get for a long, long time.
@@kevmasengale6903 What. Totodile? a bad starter?
Tell me the date, time and place for the fight that we are going to have, conchetumare
@@kevmasengale6903 unless you get Magby from the Odd Egg, that is. You can catch a Growlithe pretty early, west of Violet City, but you'll be stuck with Ember for even longer than with Quilava (Growlithe does not learn Flame Wheel until Level 34) unless you can manage to get 5500 Game Corner coins for the Fire Blast TM. Crystal players would probably prefer either Elekid or Pichu from their Odd Egg, however, given the lack of Electric-types with good level-up movesets in the game (that was the bad part about GF making the Mareep line GS-exclusive).
Magnemite is an option, but it only gets ThunderShock and Zap Cannon as level-up STAB. Jolteon is also an option, thanks to the availability of the Thunderstone, but you'll have to breed Eevee to get one capable of learning ThunderShock by level-up at Level 16 (the gift Eevee comes at Level 20; Jolteon's only other level-up STAB is Thunder at Lv. 52).
That said, if you don't want to go to the effort to get a Fire- or Electric-type, you could probably get away with a Kadabra or Alakazam running Fire Punch and ThunderPunch. Nuzlockers have to be careful given that Kadabra and Alakazam have low defensive stats (and will need to forgo Eevee in Goldenrod if buying Abra from the Game Corner, unless they manage to get a lucky encounter and catch on an Abra on the routes adjacent to Goldenrod). The coverage options that Kadabra and Alakazam have make them superior to the Eeveelutions (Psychic STAB + the three elemental punches), in my opinion.
He said it’s the weakest line up which I understand because it’s almost a non choice. 90% of people are just gonna pick cyndaquil
you overlooked the best ball though, the moon ball which makes it easier to catch pokemon that evolve using a burn heal
Underrated but extremely accurate comment lol
Lmao 😂
just looked this up and apparently its true thats hilarious
i found out yea... so it has no use besides being a normal pokeball ?
The moon ball checks for if the pokemon evolves using item id $0A. In Pokemon Red, that is Moon Stone. In Crystal however, they updated the item table and forgot to update the catching formula code. And we got the sexy ass Burn Heal Ball👍
The worst part about crystal is mareep isn't obtainable in it without trading...
I know 😱
The lack of Mareep in Crystal really brings it down for me.
Nah the lack of Girafarig is the worst part
Crystal is already better in almost every way, they had to hold something good back lol
No, the worst part of Crystal is the incest checker in the daycare
"Buying it from the 3DS eShop is the easiest way to get it"
RIP
not enough people talk about how the gym music in gen 2 is an absolute BANGER
That Victory Road music especially
I mean all Gen 2 music is great
We talk about it in the retirement home all the time
gen 2 gym battle music rips and is still my favorite
@@yerba_morte I always loved the gym music when you're standing inside! The battle music kicks ass too
I burst out laughing when he said "cmon really 3 dragonairs I hope the champion dosent do something like this"
The best thing about second gen is the sound for super effective moves. It really sounds like punching through the opponent.
The sound design In gen 2 is phenomenal
one thing I love about gen 2 that doesnt ever seem to get mentioned is how objectively good the Geodude line is against a good chunk of the main battles. it has a type advantage against 4-5 of the gym leaders, resists Miltank, has an advantage over all of the Elite Four/Champion's ace pokemon (except for Bruno) and has an advantage over a good chunk of Kanto's gym leaders - and it's available right after you get your first poke balls
Why is that 'good' though?
@@TheLoos3Goos33 How is any of what was described, a bad thing then?
@@TheLoos3Goos33 because the rock with arms wipes the floor with most of the game and i think it's funny considering it's a generally overlooked line. just about every game has at least one pokemon that sweeps through the story battles
@@parkivich i was able to trade for one waaayy back when the game came out and everybody was playing it but it's definitely tough to do nowadays unless you're using the 3ds. rock slide, earthquake, and explosion go brrrt
Golem is isn’t that good. Especially since the Elite 4 has Pokémon that will cause Golem problems. Plus Golem is slow so even Pokémon that are weak to rock and ground moves will out speed it. And it has x4 weakness against both water and grass types and since abilities weren’t around back then no Sturdy for Golem and Focus Sash wasn’t a held item yet.
Silver actually has a Crobat during his Indigo Plateau rematch.
Because Silver is the best rival
Which is a friendship evo, which means he's treating his pokemon better.
Character development.
I love the day and night cycle, I was so pissed when they didn't have it in Ruby
Noctowl
same, major gameplay mechanic I enjoyed was removed. made ruby seem inferior
Reason I hate gen 3 tbh
They technically do, it just doesn't change the colors of the pixels and doesn't affect anywhere near as much as Gen 2. There are no daily schedules to keep up with, just some NPCs that do a thing once per day, and the berry growing runs on the clock. That's about it.
@@jacobmonks3722 the colour change was the best part
I forgot to mention, if you kill any one of the beasts, there is no way you can encounter Ho-oh in the savefile since they don't respond and you can't use a traded beast. They need to be from your savefile.
Is that really true? You're saying that if you faint any of the three legendary dogs while they're roaming, you can no longer catch Ho-Oh? Was that a Crystal change? If not, I'm stunned that (a) I didn't know this and (b) I never accidentally did it as a kid. I had Gold for the most part though: did it mean that you couldn't catch Lugia in Gold? Do you have a source where I can read more info about the lore and mechanics behind all of this please? Thanks friendo :)
@@sheilaburrowes9081 You can catch both birds in all 3 Gen 2 games.
In Crystal you don't get the rainbow wing until you own all 3 Legendary beasts in your Crystal file, talk to Eusine and go to the Tin Tower to talk to the old main.
If you kill any of those 3 Pokemon or run away from Suicune (who isn't roaming in that game), you can't obtain Ho-oh because no Rainbow Wing for you.
Lugia you can still catch. Silver Wing you get in Pewter City.
Hope that answers all your questions
@@M3rtyville Thanks! It does. That's really interesting. :)
Someone might've already mentioned this but
fun fact: the battery in these games not only keeps the time, it also keeps your save file intact. If the battery died, you'd lose everything. Thankfully, the battery can be replaced, but the lost 'mons can never come back 😣
Replaced the battery on my silver, still play that and other GB and gb colour games.
@@2013_Shox Same! Thankfully the replacement batteries are easy to find.
Ran into this issue as a kid when my mom let me pickup a Silver cartridge from our local Goodwill.
I was so upset finding out the battery was dead and I couldn't save lmao, but I had a super awesome bus driver who swapped out the battery for me and that started my gen 2 addiction. 😌
@@thefemboyking that is a fantastic bus driver haha
Silver is literally my favorite pokemon character because of the pokemon adventures manga. Its so freaking good and I love how it fleshes out a lot of the characters.
Crystal was always my favorite. It felt more mysterious than others, which to me really suits the bizarre nature of the universe itself.
If Pokemon Crystal was so good, why didn't they make a Pokemon Crystal 2?
Because typically remakes are to make a game better. It's not possible to make crystal better
U silly sill
If you guys want to play an improved Crystal version check out Crystal Clear.
If black and White 2 are so good, why didnt they make a black and White 2 2
Actually, they did make Crystal 2. In fact, Crystal was so great, that they made 2 of them. They are called Heart Gold and Soul Silver.
The level curve in Gen 2 is ridiculous, and it's by far the worst thing about it. It's really the only thing that keeps me from loving it more, because in basically every other way I think it is some of the best stuff Pokémon has ever done. It's story is laid back but interesting, the region is filled with lore and mystique, the music is top notch for a GameBoy game and very catchy, and the sprite work is iconic to me. Also the 100 new designs for Pokémon are so consistently solid (even if their actual viability in battle averages on the lower end of the spectrum).
i heard the people who play tested gold and silver complained about the level curve because they thought it was a glitch
The game really should have forced you to go west after Ecruteak due to some sort of obstacle blocking you from going east. Then, continue to ramp up the level curve linearly from there.
@@sand-attack I don't even think they really needed to go that far. Literally just increase the levels and let the players travel East at their own risk. Gen 1 did pretty much the same thing, where you could fight Gyms 3-6 in any order, even if that range was like 20 levels.
i played a hack called hgss golden edition that supposedly fixes the level curve, but i was just underleveled the entire game as a result. this entire thing feels like an unsolvable problem
@anananananananananananananana That can only work until you get to Red. The level curve is so low throughout most of the game. The E4 barely even hits the 50s, and the Kanto gym leaders aren't any higher. Blue is the only "challenge" in the entire region, and then Red is a whole 20 levels above him. It's just so poorly balanced. It's not impossible to beat Red with Level 60s, and I've done so myself, but you basically need to resort to cheesy strategies. Grinding on the wild pokemon takes forever because they also don't go past the 40s for some reason.
The battle tower in Crystal is one of the hardest in any pokemon game.
This game reaches it’s full potential when you try to fill the dex as you go. Feels like an MMO
Fun fact. Did you know that because of the way the system works, you can actually have shiny Pokémon in red and blue? I had a shiny Clafairy and didn’t know it until I put it into Pokémon stadium way back when.
Was it nicknamed?
There's a whole animation for shiny pokémon so it's kinda hard to miss. They sparkle when they come out just like in every other gen. The only obvious diffence is the Gameboy is mono colored so there isn't a color difference.
Nicknamed Pokémon in Stadium can have different colour palettes even if they're not shiny - but not to take away from the cool factor there, Stadium 2 still shows shinies with their animation, since Gen 2 introduced shiny Pokémon.
@@hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853 ya that's why I asked lol
@@hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853 no. It was a real shiny. When I put it into crystal it was shiny. It is a green eared clafaible. 100%.
That quick silent moment when you picked Girl is really funny
It's worth mentioning that the Pokegear phone mechanic allows trainers to tell you about rare Pokemon and at least in Crystal allows you to get evolution stones. As for Gymleaders using items, Brock has a shitton of full heals in Red/Blue if he is prompted to use them, making poisoning his Pokemon pretty difficult.
"This Rocket executive has 5 Koffings snd a Weezing, you'll be fine"
All of the Koffings but 1 has self destruct and the Weezing has explosion, which are big oofs
The Rival fight in Azalea Town does actually catch you off guard.
Before doing Slowpoke Well, you can actually go past that encounter point and into the forest, so if you explored before slowpoke well, it's a surprise that you suddenly can't.
"I'm pretty sure no matter how you play this game, there will come a point where you HAVE to spend an hour levelling up your team"
Speedrunners have entered the chat.
6:42 I did the exact same thing in my first playthrough, didn’t realize it was a whole “personalize your rival” kind of deal.
I was looking for some pokemon "retrospectives" that I hadn't seen before and stumbled upon this. Very good video man, keep it up.
You didn't have to buy a charcoal. You could've gotten it from the same man you helped in ilex forest get his farfetch'd back.
Didn't Bills "ramblings" about time travel and time capsules describe trading Pokemon between Gen2 and Gen1?
L opinion, the Johto starters are actually really good and Feraligatr has been used in an old meta I’d say the weakest starters are the Unova starters power wise. Feraligatr has Sheer Force which is broken and I love the johto starters as Pokémon
But they made the Unova startes for a good reason weaker. To use other Pokemon in the run. :D
I mean the most players just using there startes and making them weaker opens your opions to use others.
Johto starters are ass
Johto starters look good because all the new mons in this gen are kinda ass. Feraligatr is the best but he's kinda a bad pick considering water types are so easy to find. Not to mention magikarp is the best nuzlocke mon of all time. I usually go with the fire starter cause fire good fire types are hard to come by depending on gen.
Unova starters have insanely OP Hidden Abilities. Serperior with Contrary plus Leaf Storm is a beast in Gen 6 and 7. I had people who rage quit because of my Serperior. Feraligatr is Serperior chow lol.
@@BansheeNT-D Um Unova starter with their Hidden Abilities are overpowered. Contrary Serperior with Leaf Storm, Giga Drain, Dragon Pulse, and Glare has scared many people I have battled into rage quitting and turning their power off.
I genuinely enjoyed this video in it's entirety, if you wanted to make a video about the post game I would 100% watch, and if you made a video about emerald I would 100% watch that too, great job!
Agreed! Please make a video about the post game... pretty please?
I love Crystal. I got the chance to play it on the 3DS VC. Also, I looked at my Gold Version, and I named Silver “Mybutt”. I thought it was hilarious when I was younger he sent out Gastly. Looking back on that, I kinda wish I could change it.
i really like your sense of humor in this video. the way you present your videos is fun, too! this is a good chill video :D.
The only bad thing about Crystal is that you can't catch Mareep in the game unless you trade from Gold or Silver or use cheats.
I love how these Pokemon video essays are just one long rant about what people like and dislike about the game and literally everybody is doing it now.
Nooooo I wanted part 2-so I could relive my childhood! 😭🙏🏼💔
The opening cutscene with those eyes DEFINITELY gave kids nightmares.
Came by due to seeing this to my recommends. Got to say lovely video. I can feel your passion while talking about this. Look forward to more of your videos.
When I first played this, I named the rival "???" because I didn't realise telling the officer literally what the game called the rival was naming them for the entire play-through...
This is way too relatable
You're probably American

Just for shjts and giggles... But explain to me how you can still think Bellsprout is a gen 2 Pokemon after having played through a gen 1 game and seen that noteworthy battle sprite... :P
You said you cheated by catching the Sudowoodo. Sometimes people uses the rule that static encounters (just like with Sudowoodo, Lapras, Suicune, red Gyarados and so on) are some kind of bonus encounters you can try to catch and use.
Of course everyone uses their own kind of rules which is perfectly fine.
Hello! I just wanted to say I found your channel through a recommendation a while ago, and I really love all of your content! I really enjoyed this video, it was quite a journey!
But that's not the last time we'll encounter Silv-.. I mean Shadow!
He will appear one last time before the Elite four on Tuesday and Thursday after we became the new champion! 💕
He also treats his Pokemon better, as he has a Crobat.
I was looking for an old school Pokemon playthrough/review/thingy to watch and this one was perfect. I appreciate your sense of humour and genuine appreciation for the game. Overall it was a relaxing and entertaining watch, thank you :)
I ALWAYS named the rival in Johto "???". That's because when I was little I thought that was his ACTUAL name. And that stuck with me ever since
Worst things about crystal is mareep can be only obtained via ingame trade and made me forget about ampharos existed
Really nice video, thanks! I'm replaying Pokemon Crystal for the first time in god knows how many years, and your video was a nice company (and a nice way to remember how much grinding I'll have to do in a few hours to win the last gym badge).
This takes me back, at launch there was so much hype and mystery surrounding the Unknowns. What a let down XD
Your dry humor and delivery are hilarious. 10 minutes in and I'm a fan already lol
This is the first time I've found your content and I really enjoyed this video! I came in assuming I'd watch a few minutes, but I stayed in its entirety in one sitting. Stellar balance of gameplay, thoughts, and humor. Liked and Subbed for sure!
This video made me decide to try nuzlocking for the first time… starting with this game! Great video dude!
just found your videos, and god damn i love your funny bits and the fast cutaways with the jokes
Broke open my cartridge to replace the battery and started a new game about a year ago.
It's the best Pokemon game imho.
I've played it three times now throughout my life.
The developers put their all into the game, and you can tell that if they had more time (and space) they would have kept going.
Many many memories of this sitting in the back of my grandfather's conversion van. Although I have to admit I didn't quite understand English yet. Gen 3 was my first official playthrough where I could actually read to some degree.
This was my first Pokémon game and I will always remember Goldenrod, my Cyndaquil, and the Sudowoodo on route 36, and how amazing everything was in the Gen 2 remakes sending me in to a world of nostalgia I never will feel again.
I like the Johto games, mostly because the pokemon introduced are some of my favorites and Johto is just good vibes. It is still the region that uses the time system the best imo because it actually has a bunch of time-dependent encounters and a bunch of day-specific events. Sitting down with one of these on a saturday morning to do a bug catching contest, is just nice. As a kid, it felt much more immersive and like the region was living with me, though I couldn't describe it at the time. That said, replaying the games (and I do it often) is an uneven experience. For a time, the goal of my playthroughs was actually to find a route that allowed you to keep up with the wonky level curve while keeping a full team. And it's still rough. It's like they expect you to explore all the optional areas before going on, because within these optional caves, the wild AND trainer levels are just a bit higher than on the main path, meaning with Surf unlocked, a bit of exploring suddenly gets you some much needed levels for the nonlinear path.
I haven't watched your video on the postgame yet, but I expect the levels will be a major talking point, because oh boy did Kanto mess it up. The gym levels are fine in my opinion, but the areas still have single digit levels to keep in line with RBY's world, which is a fun detail but makes it a drag to go through. And then Mt. Silver mons are in the 40s, making them the best but still atrocious source of endgame levels besides the E4.
I frequently cite Gen2 as one of my favorite generations, but I really came to acknowledge its flaws. Crystal also has easy evolution stones and early Poliwag but lacks my favorite Girafarig. That alone is so emblematic for how uneven the games are for me at this point.
The subtle humor in this is wonderful, great video
I recently replayed through pokemon crystal on my gameboy color. It was fun. I still want to capture raikou and entei. As well as ho oh and lugia. Oh and beat red
3-2-1-2-3 in the Radio Tower Basement only gets you a Smoke Ball. Sort of sad
I find it funny that lances pokemon decreased in level somehow
The displaying of gender is more important than you think as it's gender is related to DVs in gen 2
Honestly I subbed you for funny hollow knight video, and then I found you again, and watching this content it's so fucking good, like being serious, your videos are probably my favourite, keep it up !!
You’re voice is so entertaining and funny. This was really enjoyable to watch!
I was kinda confused on what this video was about, because i at first thought you would be talking about the game for an hour, instead of giving a summary of your playtrough with your thoughts sprinkled in-between.
I may have been introduced through a circle meme, but I love this new content man. Please keep it up.
I like your style of videos. You’re in a path to success
52:01 Actually, you can fight the Rival when you try to rematch the elite four again on Mondays and Wednesdays, after have fought him on mount moon, and his Golbat finally has evolved to a Crobat.
53:40 In Crystal, you can access the first move tutor of the franchise in Goldenrod after beating the champion. He can teach Ice Beam, Thunderbolt and Flamethrower. I remember using him to teach Flamethrower to my friend's Mewtwo so we could beat the Pokemon Stadium 2 story mode.
Cynderquil is my favourite pokemon, your words hurt videobro 😅
this game harder than the first? my friend, you weren't the 7 year old who chose charmander as his starter in red. Crystal is my favourite all time of the games by the way. may be nostalgia speaking, but when gold/silver came out, and eventually this it was very exciting.
Your commentary is PEAK. It kills me every time lol. "I've always wanted a Growlithe!--" *used roar*...."ok, nevermind then"
Amazing video! Hope another pokemon run is coming soon
if I recall correctly, the radio music playing while you are searching for wild pokemon does effect what pokemon you find or their status, like sleeping.
Baby baby baby gimme that crystal. Instant nostalgia. That music slaps soooo good god damn
I love what you did with the border!
Wait, people don't think Crystal is in the S Tier for Pokemon games?
I like this video and the red video so much that I'd like to see you play all the pokemon games in this format...
Really liked the video, the way you play is interesting. I play and beat Crystal every couple years. Really liked the video. Favorite game of them all.
Furret is 5'11" but I'm pretty sure Pokemon are measured from tip to tail, so standing he's closer to 3 feet tall since half of his length is tail
Dude the rocket underground switch challenge took me forever the last time I played through my copy of gold, you aren’t alone 😂
Such as fire video thanks!
What are some gen 2 pokemon youd like to see get a new evolution? Loved ursaluna and stantlers new evolution. Sudowoodo,
Crystal was my very first Pokemon game so it's super nostalgic to me. Johto is one of my favourite regions aesthetically.
Cool Vid!! Never knew about the nuzlocke gimmick but that does make for an interesting game. I mentioned in the comment section for the post-game about the daycare being introduced. But I actually forgot it is in Gen 1 it just doesn't have the breeding mechanic yet. During the mainstory play through there isn't much access to the Johto Pokémon which is really stupid. Unless you picked Cyndaquil, Odd Egg hatches in to Magby, or you manage to get a Fire Stone to evolve Eevee, Growlithe is the only FIRE type in the mainstory to use. Mareep and Girarafarig missing from Crystal also takes a huge amount of loss out of the adventure as well. A neat technique about the Bug-Catching Contest: There is a guy ( In all Blue ) on the west side of the park that seems to always win the contest. If you SAVE before you start the contest and reset he should be gone. This ups your chance to capture Scyther and win top prize which is the Sun Stone. An absolutely necessary item to evolve Sunkern in to Sunflora and Gloom into Bellossom. This is the only way to obtain these stones in the game.
The odd egg is an item you get from the daycare that can hatch into Igglybuff, Cleffa, Magby, Smoochum, Elekid, Tyrogue or Pichu. It depends on your Trainer ID number. If Suicune is defeated at the Tin Tower, it will respawn after you defeat the Pokémon League. However if Raikou and Entei faint... it's game over for the Ho-Oh event. Ruins of Alph is an interesting location that holds some special secrets and special Pokémon so be sure to not overlook this area. Check every nook and cranny and see what you find. So awesome that this was the game that introduced gender choice, it made the franchise much more inclusive and seemingly gave power to female players as well. Catching Pokémon during certain times of the day is a really unique touch and a great use of the time feature. I left some other deets in my comment on the post-game of this as well. But overall Crystal is a fantastic game. It grows more value in my heart as the time passes. ❤❤👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
You get a charcoal for free from the woodcutter's apprentice.
3:08 I have so many copies of Crystal because everyone gave them away to me, nobody had a Gameboy Color in my neighborhood back then, to the point where friends would just say "Hey want it or I'm just gonna throw it in the trash". I think it was also because my friends were growing up and they thought Pokemon was childish. I didn't have a GBC either and I couldn't play it, so I'd look at the cover, the Pokemon on the cover always looked interesting, I'm not sure how to explain it but it always looked majestic and it'd always be staring at me when I opened my closet.
Thanks for this retrospective, I played the original gen 2 but never this one so it was interesting to see all the differences in this version. I'm surprised gen 2 had so many mainstays of the modern Pokemon games.
I love the sprites' color in this game, also I love the pokemons, they're all cute but not very powerful
The game intro triggered memories that I forgot existed 🥹
Crobat is cracked. Blazing fast, mixed attacker, learns many utility moves, and poison flying type gives it advantages against so many pokemon.
Awesome video, Pokemon Crystal is a game so closly dear to my heart!

30:29 cool! Sonic Advance 2 music reference!
Also, I wonder if you are gonna talk about the Pokérus condition. It is a much rare condition than shiny Pokemon, but brief-talk, it makes the pokemon stats better... For some reason, I guess it is way the developers made to use the IVs or EVs stat manipulation better/easier or something, but I don't remember much though. I only found one in my entire life, a Scyther in a Crystal playthrough ages ago. The Pokérus stat box is purple but I vaguely remember the Scyther being magenta or pinkish-purple, maybe it was a shiny but again, it was ages ago.
Also also, I think the Pokérus status was only in Gen 2 but I can't confirm it.
Also you do fight rival one more time if you go to challenge the elite 4 on a certain day. He'll stop you right before the stair case and demand you fight him.

I just love being able to get Growlithe in Crystal. That alone is something I really loved. But Idk, Silver had the best overall sprites to me and Crystal took most of them from Gold. Still, I guess Crystal is overall the best version to play, and it's still got Skarmory like Silver does which is one of my favorite gen 2 pokemon. I used to think it was a gen 3 pokemon because I never saw it until Sapphire
