Bought this album in college when it first came out. My girlfriend and I used to listen to it all the time. We danced to it at our wedding. 25 years later, it's still the most beautiful music ever and she's just as beautiful as ever too. Thanks you, Blue Nile for the music of our lives. To semi-quote another BN song, we haven't always been "happy go lucky" but we love each other as much today as we did back in college listening to this.
I got the record on a friends recc and hated it....2 or 3 listens too few.....years passed before I realised how excellent these guys were or are and will be. Their 1998 or so record is amazing too
Back when iPods were de rigueur, I was setting up the bar at work and plugged my music into the house system. One of the managers came up to me with tears in her eyes, asking who the band was. She didn't understand all the lyrics, but the hook: "Stay, and I will understand you," really got to her. She opined, "After all, isn't this what we really want, to be understood and not judged?"
If I had to choose just one Blue Nile song, heaven forbid, this would be it. Heard it before Walk Across the Rooftops came out and I just knew I was listening to something totally new , and from my own city too. I've no words to say how much pleasure these guys have given me over the years.
Stunning, when he sings "and beat the drum of youth again" my heart aches, i was 19 when i first heard this and it brings back so many glorious memories. There are a few songs in life that can make me aches with sheer beauty and this is one of them.
I heard of them here in The Netherlands. This song was played frequently on national radio back in those days and so was "Tinseltown in the Rain". Reminds me of the last years in high-school, a looong time ago.
The very best,This is from across the roof tops.Top album top band.Knew they were Scots, but never realised thats where the following was,in England nobody has heard of themLove them they got me through collage.I want to live in Scotland.
Brings me back to my youth me and my brother up late listening to music on the radio and coming across a gem of a band the blue nile being one he introduced me to some great music over the years and some not so but thats life he is now living his dream at 39 studing music production and i love him now and appreciate him more than ever its a one way trip tell everyone you love i love u before its too late love@light
Saw them play at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall ( in 1990 - I think ) with my brother and sister. Live, they were simply awesome. Glasgow was the City of Culture that year and they remain the class act they have always been.
I had the privilege of seeing them live 3 times at different stages of their career and can honestly say that they have been about the best gigs I've been to. The 2nd time I saw them I as so moved by Paul Buchanan's haunting voice I actually had a tear in my eye. Mesmerising!
+Audrey Falconer Saw about the 4th gig they ever played at The Free Trade Hall in Manchester.................A tear?? Christ girl the entire audience and every band member cried like children that night
Please share more about the memories you have from this band and your great chance to perform like that, for the rest of us that we can only imagine or maybe not even that, where was that, when...?
videos were never their strong suit. but man, this record stands the test of time. what a lyricist, what a singer. beautiful playing, lovely men. . The emotion in his voice is so complex. He is the sexiest man alive.
again-thanks youtube!!!! bought the album way back in ´83 and never seen the video to this great song- anyway all of the tunes on the album are ace!!!!
They are too good for the popular tripe we hear all too often......a band with a unique sound for connoisseurs of good music with words that have true meaning......thanks for posting...
I discovered this song and band by back tracking the lead singer career. He worked with Peter Gabriel on the OVO soundtrack. This guys voice is awesome. He really shines on the track "Make tomorrow a better day" fome OVO
I first saw this group in a bar in Hong Kong, 1984. I wuz in a bar with my travel buddy, Bruce, and we were chatting up these chicks. In the background, the bar has this big video screen and this was playing. I loved it! So when they did a tour in my native Chicago maybe 1990(?) I saw them in concert at a small intimate venue with my friend, Grace who also happened to be from Hong Kong. Will always remind me both events in my life.
I bought this way back in the 80s as a teen :) no one seemed to know it or cared...just went under the radar for some peculiar reason...but I still love it
I too have this reaction............and then another Blue Nile track starts and that becomes my favourite, I hope they can keep changing my mind lpb xxxx
First time I've read the adjective stellar to describe The Blue Nile. It suits them perfectly, stellar, stellar, stellar. beautiful adjective, moviehound71 :)
Anyone still watching August 2019. Released on LINN records, which also made the LP12 deck...the best ever. Great great memories. Wow Scotland was a hub of talent back then. Now living in Chiang Mai and still listening.
superb group bought walk across the roof tops when it first come out my mate eryl borrowed it never given back.... must get another copy.......i just wonder what the group are doin now they should have been world beaters
I get so fucking sentimental when I hear songs like this... reminds me of hanging with my brother when we were boys... such a hauntingly beautiful track. I love it so much.
This was one of the staple song in WXB 102 in the Philippines back in the mid 80's. Together with the Psychedelic furs, new order, the church, joy division, cactus world news, bolshoi etc, etc..
This is not the original version from the album of the late 1980s. It's not just re-mastered/re-mixed; some of the parts have been re-recorded, and new parts have been added. What a find, only 9 years late for me.
The Blue Nile are reason enough to visit Richer Sounds and blow a grand......then nip over to HMV and pick up a copy of "Hats" and "Walk Across The Rooftops" on CD.......the MP3 does not cut it.......for most music an MP3 suffices just fine, but this stuff is just so ridiculously delicate and obsessively well produced it demands a hard, original copy!

This is a 4 year old comment but I have to tell you I love your story about the song
I got the record on a friends recc and hated it....2 or 3 listens too few.....years passed before I realised how excellent these guys were or are and will be. Their 1998 or so record is amazing too
Comments like this keep me coming back to the comments section despite all the trolls. Big love
Hope you still with your wife ;)

This is a great song. It just popped into my head after an 8 year hiatus of not hearing it. Nice story.
If I had to choose just one Blue Nile song, heaven forbid, this would be it. Heard it before Walk Across the Rooftops came out and I just knew I was listening to something totally new , and from my own city too. I've no words to say how much pleasure these guys have given me over the years.
Absolutely haunting and powerful even after all these years.
Stunning, when he sings "and beat the drum of youth again" my heart aches, i was 19 when i first heard this and it brings back so many glorious memories. There are a few songs in life that can make me aches with sheer beauty and this is one of them.
The Blue Nile is not a religion, not a cult, it's just love. Pure love, which is the nicest thing.
Excelent tema
I heard of them here in The Netherlands. This song was played frequently on national radio back in those days and so was "Tinseltown in the Rain". Reminds me of the last years in high-school, a looong time ago.
I think pretty much everybody had this CD when I was at uni. - this and "Rattlesnakes." Thanks so much.
The very best,This is from across the roof tops.Top album top band.Knew they were Scots, but never realised thats where the following was,in England nobody has heard of themLove them they got me through collage.I want to live in Scotland.
Beautiful. Great music never ages.

Possibly the best song ever made
The bass line was what first hooked me on this song. I heard this song by accident. Very atmospheric keys too.
Most beautiful, intelligent, love songs. Blue Nile music of memory and desire
Happy New Year to all TBN fans.
What a nice way to start the year, this song is timeless.
On of the greatest scene of the 80's. Unforgettable and inspired. The greatest scenes are are be found in the 80's and 60's, and critically inspired.
Such a beautiful song and with such memories,,,lonliness and romance...very underrated group with such great melodies
These guys never date. Fresh and original as it was on first hearing. One of music's best kept secrets.
Original, gorgeous, haunting, and achingly human, The Blue Nile are a treasure. TBN forever!
Far out man and good stuff and a song from long ago. You tube is great to finally put faces to music and songs. Old Aussie Andy.
Saw them play at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall ( in 1990 - I think ) with my brother and sister. Live, they were simply awesome. Glasgow was the City of Culture that year and they remain the class act they have always been.
The best band in the world. Wish they were still together. Go on, Paul!
Words cant explain this, sheer quality
I had the privilege of seeing them live 3 times at different stages of their career and can honestly say that they have been about the best gigs I've been to. The 2nd time I saw them I as so moved by Paul Buchanan's haunting voice I actually had a tear in my eye. Mesmerising!

Brilliant song from brilliant bunch of guys
again-thanks youtube!!!!
bought the album way back in ´83 and never
seen the video to this great song- anyway all
of the tunes on the album are ace!!!!
Love them both...this' got a more pronounced bass line and rythm section. Also, this version's the one they usually play on the radio.
Brilliant Scottish band, lyrics and sound.
If I could have one superpower it would be Paul Buchanan's voice.
That voice and his delivery of lyrics....
Brilliant comment
They are too good for the popular tripe we hear all too often......a band with a unique sound for connoisseurs of good music with words that have true meaning......thanks for posting...
EXCELLENT AND BEAUTIFUL!
I discovered this song and band by back tracking the lead singer career. He worked with Peter Gabriel on the OVO soundtrack. This guys voice is awesome. He really shines on the track "Make tomorrow a better day" fome OVO

Buen tema me gusta
Goodnight L.A. (on KABC-TV) played this video fairly often, and I couldn't get enough of it.
Those times (the 1980s) were so different from now...
gorgeous song, first time I heard BN it was instant love for their music.
Excellent song. Simple and complex at the same time. Love bass-line and voice :)
This man's voice amazing me every time I hear it. I cant get enough. I heard the band is playing in Montreal Dec 31st. Wow wish I could go.
I love this song, I am in a lonely place now, but when I hear this song I have so many friends!

I first saw this group in a bar in Hong Kong, 1984. I wuz in a bar with my travel buddy, Bruce, and we were chatting up these chicks. AWESOME
The band "Grace Pool" did a cover of this song in the 90's. It is a faster tempo version but also very good....
..dis brings back memories..thanks.
Love this song to, how young do they look in this video, we must be getting old!!!
I get so fucking sentimental when I hear songs like this... reminds me of hanging with my brother when we were boys... such a hauntingly beautiful track. I love it so much.
His style of music has not been replicated
What is it about this song? A haunting performance and a vastly underrated and unappreciated band at the time.
Perfection!
The Lyrics... If you can read between the lines then we share a common sentiment...they just wont go away nor fade...
Great times for melody in alternative music...

Cracking Tune.....
This was one of the staple song in WXB 102 in the Philippines back in the mid 80's. Together with the Psychedelic furs, new order, the church, joy division, cactus world news, bolshoi etc, etc..
This was a hit in Manila back in the 80s
this is such an odd but great tune... like it's dated but it feels so timeless. the sound mixing is amazing!
This is not the original version from the album of the late 1980s. It's not just re-mastered/re-mixed; some of the parts have been re-recorded, and new parts have been added. What a find, only 9 years late for me.
Hi. Do you know where I can buy this particular version or if its in any of their albums? I prefer this to the original
Nope. It's a mystery to me. :)
I think this was the remixed version that is used in the video. I'm still wrong.
If you still out there mr smith thanks for turning me onto this band F
This takes me back to 1985.Great time for music and videos.Anybody remember the Odessey and Hit Video USA music video channels around this time?
Big love to you too, for responding as you have LPB xxxx
Cudo cudo!!!!
