I began delving into Incubus' music when I was a young teenager. I grew up in a household where I didn't always have the best guidance in how to become a well-formed, feeling, thinking human. Incubus quite honestly pointed me in the direction of who I wanted to become, and I partly credit them in shaping me into what I can humbly consider a decent person. Their music continues to encompass the growth, beauty, and inevitable chaos that is human life, and I am ever thankful for their existence.
I'm so glad to see this sentiment on every track of this album - a whole generation of us grew up listening to and learning how to be better people from Incubus. They really did help us be better in every way. We'd be a damn mess without them, lol.
Listen once, then tune in again & really listen.....you'll hear the album entirely different. Age & Mortality are definately evident in this album's lyrics...being 41 and having given us his ENTIRE VOICE for 20+ years, Brandon is a legend and I will love anything he sings until he stops.
Yep! When the singles first came out I was worried, but then hearing the whole album eased my mind; this record is an attack on how the industry destroys kids and takes away the artist's voice. Its even better than SCIENCE imo.
to me this song is about growing with age. when we were younger we were enthusiastic and naive. we had so many dreams and aspirations for ourselves. we told ourselves we could conquer the world and be who we want to be. but now after the years have bitten us, we arent exactly where we want to be in life. but its ok because "we were built to spill". we are "state of the art". meaning we will pull through because we were made for this. and even though we arent what we pictured when we were younger maybe down the line, we can learn to live with that.
Just watched you guys at the red rocks in Denver, Colorado. I am 28 and grew up listening to your music and I must say you guys are absolutely amazing. I cried a couple times 😅 but it was an honor to watch you jam out and play your hearts out. I love you INCUBUS! ❤
I think the new music is just as good and I’ve Been a fan since fungus amongus, heard all the b-sides from every album and still think this is great. It’s just a matter of opening ur mind and not trying to listen for something that’s familiar. This is truly a work of art, state of the art bro
All their lyrics are so relatable, true, bittersweetly harsh, and so touching. They've truly lived life at its fullest to be able to hit so close to home every single time. Kuddos to everything Incubus related ever.
I think this song is about Incubus as a band. It's about Brandon feeling that they've become irrelevant and a relic from the past ("merely a payphone..."). It's not your usual "failing relationship" song- It's a song about seeing your life's work crumble and fall apart. Incubus, if you're reading this- this album kicks ass. Don't ever stop making music.
I think it's actually about how the industry eats young artists; it's a veteran band saying to a young, hungry band "what they promise you is not what it actually is"
26 Years of the greatest band to ever set foot on this planet. Thank you for everything you have given me Brandon, Mike, Jose, Chris, Ben, Alex (AKA Dirk Lance), Gavin! Forever will your sound be the music in my soul. Old and New alike it all is beautiful.
I heard this over the radio at work countless times and it caught my attention and got me thinking. I wanted to check the lyrics, since I believe it's vitally important to know what the lyrics and meaning of what I'm listening to. Seems like a relatable but very deep kind of song, although I am not sure of the exact meaning from the perspective of the author. Artistically, it was very well written. Definitely a classic. Appreciate it, although I really am clueless about the author or the band.....
So badly wanted to hear this song live again this year!! It's so much better louder in your face!! Glad I caught you twice last year! And twice the year before! Please come back to Syracuse new york like now!
The first 4 songs that was released on this album exactly describes how I'm feeling about myself and what I've been going through my life right now. Thank you Incubus! Can't wait till April 21st!
I've been listening to Incubus since I randomly saw Brandon on AI. I was taken back by his beauty & started watching & listening everything I could find. This has been going on non stop for weeks now. I can't get enough!! I'm grateful I finally found him!!!
Their writing has always been cutting edge and poignant. It's a shame they were so far ahead of their time. 20 years from now they will be the most influential of the Gen-X bands.
I imagine a concert where everyone sings along to "look at you, you're falling apart, built to spill, you're state of the art. Now look at you you, well look at you now" ufff
this song and Loneliest are my favorite songs in this moment, I follow this group since 16 years ago and always bring some different and unique for us; thanks you so much Incubus, you bring me good moments in my life 😍😘 Incubus forever ✌
Ive read some comments saying that they are not the same and of course they're not, the sound they had years ago was part of that time, everything evolves... i like what they are doing.. i cant stop playing this song!
He's one of the most talented vocalists of his generation. Very overlooked in regards to Cornell, Bennington, but very much their equals if not better.
You were the first in flight Now a modern relic Nearly a payphone on a one a.m. sidewalk We're all cast aside And we're antiquated Right as we start to finally figure out what we are Look at you so bright State of the art You're new, you're young, your blissful ignorance It's everything they like, but the years have teeth And sometimes they bite (sometimes they bite) Look at you, you're falling apart Built to spill, you're state of the art Now look at you, well look at you now Now do you see that smile At the foot of the ladder Ain't it familiar? That was you only yesterday But this justice feels More like a poison apple And inevitably everyone'll bite into it Now look at you so bright State of the art You're new, you're young, your blissful ignorance It's everything they like, but the years have teeth And sometimes they bite Look at you, you're falling apart Built to spill, you're state of the art Now look at you, well look at you now I'm falling, I'm falling apart The state of, the state of the art Look at you, you're falling apart Built to spill, you're state of the art Now look at you, well look at you now Look at you, you're falling apart Built to spill, you're state of the art Yeah look at you, well look at you now State of the art State of the art Look at you so bright State of the art

but this justice feels more like a poison apple..and inevitably everyone'll bite into it. so many other lines here in this song that are just as true as this one. built to spill!!!!!!! true, true, true!
It's funny, I was there in 91 when they first started putting stuff out! I hear whatever people, I imagine, are referring to "old Incubus" in almost every song. I thought when I heard Skrillex produced and mixed 8 there might be a giant shift from their sound or their message... but I see all of that in this song right here! =D There's a lot of 'Pardon Me' here. There's a lot of 'Drive' here. =) It's really in the listen!
Welcome! I was very upset when I saw them live shortly after the release and everyone was hating on it. I think it's the best record they've ever made.

@@CraigKeidel I wanna say blasphemy but I mean.... Music is so subjective!!
This is one of the best ballads in modern rock music. Truly one of Incubus's best songs

Stop saying you miss the "Old" Incubus. Stop living in the past. This is brilliant and very well done.
Roady I miss the old incubus
I miss the old incubus
I miss the old Incubus.
Agreed!! If ya don’t like the new stuff ignore it and move on to something you DO like.

@@CraigKeidel i think" they" in the songs refers to the society/fans that loves and promises you to be there always but with time it all fades away
The writing on this song is more poetry than verse. Incubus...YOU STILL GOT IT!!
This track is short and sweet. Kinda addictive. And the fact that we're getting a new Incubus album is fantastic! I'm so looking forward to it.
Jayansh Singh it's... 4 minutes long
Jayansh Singh Short? It’s nearly a 4 minute song. A short song would be like 2 minutes.

Me parece que pasan los años y no pierden la magia de hacer música.... Uno de mis grupos favoritos... Que vuelvan a Costa Rica
Yep. Now look at you now. Best release off this album so far. Looking forward to the rest!
This whole album is fantastic. So proud of these guys.

"But the years have teeth, and sometimes they bite"
beautiful!
Man this song means you need to keep your stuff in control and don't believe what people tell u. Were only human man.
It's 5am in the U.K. It's worth being awake at this time to listen to my favourite band
This one sounds like a big hit in a totally good way... GREAT JOB INCUBUS!!!

Miike Conville asa are qyy3y
Thanks for making my life better with your music 💙
I love this song. With every album that they put out there's always at least one song that is exceptional and changes your life.
I love how they kept elements from if not now when, but combined it with banging song writing and impactful dynamics bra.
Justo cuando ya me iba a dormir mi banda favorita sube esto. Larga vida a incubus!
Pristina Boyd Solo el día de hoy le he dado durísimo a esta canción jaja
Will forever be my favorite band! Despite some of their style changing they still make great music.
thank God for Lyric videos! I love Incubus and have always enjoyed singing along with them!! I love this song and the Undefeated!
That guitar part at 1:08 is amazing!!!
Agree.
I could listen to that part a thousand times and it still wouldn't be enough.
I had the privilege and pleasure of watching this live 😭 Damn it, Incubus! You're giving me hopeful feels again!
This is such a cool song. It’s like a retrospective of them and who they are to the fans

That’s very true they’re always very creative poetic about any music lyrics they make
I love this song. It is so beautiful. Happy Incubus Day everyone! and Welcome back Incubus!

Oh man, I really love the feel of this one.
yesterday i was at the concert in bogota colombia, "this song" and "love in time of surveillance" were my favorite, you were awesome guys !!!
I loved Incubus...and I still do :)
If you're a nimble bastard....you'll love this new album and all of their albums.
Definitely the best song on the album in my opinion. I think it's gonna sound amazing live
I just love Brandon's vocals
He's one of the most talented vocalists of his generation. Very overlooked in regards to Cornell, Bennington, but very much their equals if not better.
I WILL NEVER FALL APART FROM YOU 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
So different but FEELS like Incubus. I love it.
You were the first in flight
Now a modern relic
Nearly a payphone on a one a.m. sidewalk
We're all cast aside
And we're antiquated
Right as we start to finally figure out what we are
Look at you so bright
State of the art

It's everything they like, but the years have teeth
And sometimes they bite (sometimes they bite)
Look at you, you're falling apart
Built to spill, you're state of the art
Now look at you, well look at you now
Now do you see that smile
At the foot of the ladder
Ain't it familiar? That was you only yesterday
But this justice feels
More like a poison apple
And inevitably everyone'll bite into it
Now look at you so bright
State of the art
You're new, you're young, your blissful ignorance
It's everything they like, but the years have teeth
And sometimes they bite
Look at you, you're falling apart
Built to spill, you're state of the art
Now look at you, well look at you now
I'm falling, I'm falling apart
The state of, the state of the art
Look at you, you're falling apart
Built to spill, you're state of the art
Now look at you, well look at you now
Look at you, you're falling apart
Built to spill, you're state of the art
Yeah look at you, well look at you now
State of the art
State of the art
Look at you so bright
State of the art
All the talk of this album bringing back riffs and being heavy....
This is what I like from Incubus, my favorite band. They have unique albums, and I'm enjoying this one so much.
If I need to listen to S.C.I.E.N.C.E., there it is.
Variety people, variety.
yea but everything from Crow left of the murder was kind of the same, unlike their 1st few
This is easily the best song on their new album! Loved these guys since HS days -
Incubus you guys are still amazing
aahhh...u all have done it again...sync to my life..thank you..blessings always 💜🙏
His voice lit is so irreplaceable and unique! hypnotized!
Thank you Incubus ❤️
love it! love the lyric, seems very personal and mature. And let me tell you that live performance is amazing
It'll be a sad day when Incubus stops making music.
B Cook I hope that never happens but i guess all good things have to clme to an end
Don't worry, we have so much time left, it's only the 8th album. Think about Iron Maiden; they've made 34 albums and they're still going on.
B Cook they stopped for 15 years and they came back with this amazing album
They already stopped
With good music
word.
I knew being nocturnal and awake at 5am would have perks one day.
Oh Flan lol 7 am .. I found unreleased demos too
Oh Flan 4:30
Incubus is one of those bands I love to listen around 4-5 am.
sup?
it's flat and boring
but this justice feels more like a poison apple..and inevitably everyone'll bite into it. so many other lines here in this song that are just as true as this one. built to spill!!!!!!! true, true, true!

Beauty of an insight. Whatever that means. 🤷🏼♂️🧑🎓🧑🔬🤴
best song ever!!!
Incubus sounding more like Incubus in years I like it.
Love Brandon's voice!! Still beautiful!
Being awake is worth it. Still dig it
This tune gives me hope
Much much closer to old school but a really good modern twist with some awesome lyrics, best brandon has done in a while
Absolute favorite track from this album.
Great song~~feels like slow motion jumping in the air!!!
More relevant every year.
The Smile at the Foot of the Ladder is a favorite book of mine.

The years have teeth and they bite
Wait 'til you're _51._
