    Solovair boots are Made in England by the firm which built the first Dr Martens. They are built on the same lasts in the same range of styles. They are more durable than contemporary Dr Martens and have a shank, which helps people who are wearing them all day. They are a little bit more expensive, but are longer lasting and harder wearing. They offer better value for money than Dr Martens. When reviewing a product, it is useful to compare and contrast it to the competition in the marketplace. There are videos on UA-cam which directly compare these footwear brands.

      Yeah, I made a video comparing the Solovair astronaut boot to a pair of Docs I was interested in at the time. I also regurgitated the same information in my video that all the other videos Docs Vs Solovair videos mention. However IMHO Solovair seems only marginally better than Dr Martens. When I did a “deep dive” into this debate I found that many Solovair customers reported the same issues as Dr Martens. When comparing the two models I was interested in, the QC and attention to detail was really about the same. My made in Asia 1460s have lasted me a decade at this point, the only reason I would buy a pair of Solovair boots is aesthetics and half sizes. I must admit Solovair customer service is on point but, I also haven’t had a bad experience with DM.

      I wouldn’t say all that. They definitely feel sturdier and heavier but after a year my solovair got a split in the leather and after paying 250 bucks it ain’t worth it. I can spend 50-100 less and get the same time out of boots. I walk about four hours a day minimum. The mie docs lasted the longest and they don’t even have a shank. I had my mie docs longer than my solovairs and they still out distance the solovairs

    Its hard to believe you have never had problems with your Doc Martens. I had a pair in the early 90’s that were built like a tank. They never cracked.. seemed to last forever and got better with age. I use to live in Southern California at that time. Now I live in NYC and I bought a pair of Martens in 2000. They lasted about 8 months and then there were cracks all over the top of the shoe. Then the sole started to crack. I threw that pair away. Fast forward to 2021 I got another pair of Docs. They lasted about 6 months and then the sole actually cracked in the middle of the shoe. I noticed it when I felt my sock getting wet one rainy day. I contacted Docs and they sent me a new pair which was nice. I’ve had this pair now for a few months but I wear them maybe once or twice a week if that. And already the top is starting to crack. I’m now in the market for a longer lasting boot. If I could only find a pair like the one I had in the 90’s.

      I tried the Solovair Astronaut boot and yes the QC was better but it wasn’t light years ahead of DM. When I listen or read some reviews of Solovair vs DM people make it seem like it’s comparing idk… Ford vs Toyota. IMHO it’s more like comparing Toyota vs Lexus. Yes Solovair are a little nicer than DM but it’s still a Toyota if that makes sense.

    My biggest gripe with dms is how fast the sole seem to wear out, and it seemed to really start in the late 90s/early 2000s. I always thought it was because they switched from a lug sole to the ripple looking sole, but after i started wearing solovair, i could really tell a difference in the soles.
    Also, for a purely fashion standpoint, the narrower soles and silver stitching looks a little more “mature” now that im 40 years old, but i cant blame dms for keeping thier classic yellow stitching.

    Dr. Martens' durability has been nothing short of disappointing. I am thoroughly disheartened with this brand. As a dedicated wearer of Dr. Martens throughout my life, my most recent pair, a mere year old, has left me profoundly frustrated. The so-called "leather," which seems predominantly plastic, has developed cracks in four different areas, and the soles have completely separated and detached after just one year of use. While Dr. Martens were never renowned for their top-tier quality, they were known for being affordable and providing a more sneaker-like comfort compared to traditional boots. However, I now struggle to find any compelling reason to continue purchasing these boots, especially given their lack of a Goodyear welt, rendering them essentially unrepairable.

  • @bent1208
    @bent1208 Рік тому +4

    I’m curious if you guys have checked out the rose anvil channel. He cuts boots in half and explains how durable boots will be based on the materials used and how they’re put together. My concern with docs is they can’t be resoled and theres cardboard cement for the base. Solevair solves both those issues with a Goodyear welt and a leather cork midsole. That being said, any half decent leather boot will outlast a sneaker by a long shot. I love how more people are talking about quality shoes and raising the awareness of fashionable and durable footwear and I love your no jump cut style of presenting this information.

The other thing is that Docs can be resoled the technique is just different. This shop in the UK does it all the time and does a really good job.

    Hello, Many thanks for your reply. I live in the UK, which means that the shipping costs are minimal and Solovair boots can be quickly sent to the factory for repairs. I can see that this is less of an advantage overseas. My favourite plain Derby boots are solid leather Naval deck boots, made by the Standard Screwed construction currently used by William Lennon. The last shape and specification date back to WW1. They were made until 1992. It is likely that the British Admiralty last from that era, over a century old, is still perpetuated by Solovair and Dr Martens. I have a 1980s pair of original Dr Marten Derby shoes which have the original grey soles, which are tougher than later ones. A shank is fitted, as per Solovair. They also fit my feet extremely well.

    I started wearing Docs in 1991 and since then have owned 8 pairs. That said I would consider myself a pretty good candidate for someone who knows how the quality has changed the past 30 years. Up until recentlyI have only owned made in England Docs. I recently picked up a used pair of 101s (my favorite cut) made in Vietnam. Well compared to my 101s from the mid 90s the construction blows! The vintage ones have a shank and the Vietnamese pair don’t. I can feel the difference. The leather is definitely more “plastic” feeling - that could be the paint used. My newer ones and old ones are both smooth leather and the newer pair has somehow warped in the toe region which is odd because I have only had them a month and have very narrow feet. As mentioned I bought them used they were already pretty broken in. Long story short - I ordered a pair of black vintage 101s and the Vietnamese ones are going up on Poshmark. If I buy a new pair in the future I am definitely sticking with the ones made in England. Hopefully the quality of these will be parallel with the vintage Docs. This all said if you find a pair of the Asian Docs dirt cheap they still have good construction - just not nearly as good as the vintage ones.

      I have been searching for a pair of vintage DM 1490s in decent shape but they are getting harder to find. I would love to compare the two and see if the legend lives up to the hype. Holding a new pair of Solovair next to a new pair of DM. I could definitely tell that the Solovair QC is better but IMHO only marginally better. I’m still up in the air with the shank debate I guess some people need them, but I can’t feel the difference unless I’m standing on a ladder for hours. When I’m not wearing my 1460s I wear pretty minimal shoes so maybe that’s why I don’t need a shank IDK. I found a boot that I wanted to compare to my DM but after wearing them for a few months I have found them to be so different it’s like comparing a Tank to a Toyota.

      Thank you, I think docs are great for so many reasons. Yes there might be “better” boots out there but better is so relative. I the polarization in the world of shoes interesting. On one side you have people that believe a shoe absolutely needs a stacked heel, a metal shank etc etc. On the other end of the spectrum you have the people that believe all of these features are actually making your foot weaker… It’s very interesting.

    • @nahidkhan1234

      @@KRTLyfe A shank objectively makes a boot better. No premium boot doesn't not have a shank. It's not polarising, there are no differing school of thoughts or differences of opinion. Simply a shank makes a boot far far more comfy. How can you review a boot and say you don't need a shank when evidently you haven owned and experienced a boot that has a shank to compare 😂

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  Рік тому

      LMAO you got jokes! Comfort is absolutely relative to the end user. I would also argue “premium” is a relative term that could vary greatly on whom you ask. For some “premium” is any PNW boot to others BV or Ann Demeulemeester or similar would be “premium” so yeah.

  • @lv2465
    @lv2465 3 місяці тому +2

    IMHO the length of time footwear lasts is purely down to the individual. It depends on one's weight, how often you wear them, in what weather you wear them etc. If you were to wear any footwear every day in all weather for hours, you can expect that it will reduce the lifespan of your footwear no matter how expensive. For me personally i rotate my footwear throughout the year, in spring summer, white trainer's to Clarks original Desert boots, autumn my DMs and in wet weather Clarks goretex boots. And finally a little maintenance will keep your footwear healthy.

    LOL right?! I just started a bit over a year ago on a tight budget, and while I don't have the basic 1460 (YET, they're on my list though!), I have the 1460s with the fur (not real 1460s) and they're lovely. Not as hot as UGGs, but the fur kicked up the warmth really nicely. And during the fall last year, I grabbed 1, then 2, then 3 pair of Doc sandals (2 quads in different colors, and then the gladiators with the huge soles though I wore them with socks through the winter - surely helped break them in) - buying off-season seems to be the way to stock up on Docs since they were half off.
    I got the Combs in a cream color for daily wear and loved them (tons of compliments in these regular old shoes!), and then finally the Jadons! I was scared of the Jadons because of reviews about them 'hurting your feet', but I wore 2 pairs of socks with them and they're really, really comfortable.
    You buy what you like. I like Docs except the "political statement" shoes; I don't wear political anything.

    I found some interesting information while making this video. Dr. Martens is experimenting with a repair program. Unfortunately it is only available in the UK at them moment and the repaired shoes are put up for sale. Doc Martens needs to offer a repair program which allows you to have your shoes repaired and sent back to you. I personally would love to have my 1460s rebuilt and continue their story. Anyone out there with Nick’s or Whites boots, I am curious if they are gusseted all the way to the top. Please let me know I would love to try a pair!

    I have Dr Martens boots and I could've used a 9.5 but since they only have full sizes I went for the 10. Now they're too loose! They can not be resoled , and no shank! Every few blocks walking I have to tie them up again! But I still like them! I bought some Captain Thursday Boots and they're amazing! You should try those! Great video guys!

    • @KRTLyfe
      @KRTLyfe  Рік тому +2

      I ordered a pair of Thursday boots, and they were trash, I mean talk about a waste of raw materials. So if you watch my Thursday review there are a few major imperfections on the boots I received that I didn’t even get a chance to go into for sake of time in my review. The upper was poorly stitched there was a big blemish on the shaft of the boot and something else I can’t remember at this moment.
      They looked good but that was really about it. The shank argument I guess some people need it and some don’t. The only time I notice a shank or lack there of, is if I’m standing on a ladder for a few hours.
      DM is far from perfect, but Thursday is in the same boat if not worse IMHO.

    I heared so often about the quality issues of the DMs nowadays, compairing to the Made in England DMs of the 90s and before. I discovered the Solovairs aß an alternative and the quality is great. But: i think the most people don't pay enough attention to direct and indirect shoecare. Wearing leather shoes in Rotation, with one day to dry, using wooden shoe trees and a quality grease for the leather all 2 or 3 month. These are important things for the lifetime of a shoe, doesn't matter of the quality.

      I feel you, the various approaches to making boots is interesting. From minimalist to Maximus and everything in between. The only conclusion I’ve reached is that people need to find what works for them. There is no one size fits all especially with shoes and even more so with boots!

    I find it strange that the Thursday boots are always recommended as a Docs alternative, the Thursday boots look like a dress boot to me. They're thinner and have the pointy toe they come off as something you'd wear with a suit rather than a pair of Dickies.

      I tried the Thursday Explorer boot. It looks great on social media in person it is basically slightly better than something you can find at Walmart. I just feel like this was a far more honest video about these boots, every other review video I have seen about Dr martens, tend to take examples they have seen on the internet that they have not experienced themselves, and recycle those same complaints in each others' video to push a brand that they have actually tried. it seems like a bandwagon thing to hate dr martens. We will see, I ordered the unisex Cairo chukka boots of the dr martens official site, I had to get them in my normal size, so we will see how large they run, but I have high hopes for these boots. they are a sort of boot/sneaker hybrid that I am looking forward to wearing everyday casually, and at work. there aren't many reviews of the Cairo canvas chukka boots that I have been able to find, anyone who has them, let me know what you think. I am new to this boot game...... thanks for the great video!!!! subscribed

      Wow, yeah IMHO I think herd mentality has created some warped beliefs in the boot enthusiasts community like “no shank bad, Veg tanned good”. When in reality all of these features are relative to the end user.
      I really like the look of the IR but a boot shouldn’t take months or years to break in. I did such a deep dive into this boot world and I’ve found so many copy paste one size fits all commentary. A boot should be what the wearer needs it to be, not the other way around. At least that’s my thoughts and you can’t scroll past comfort lol.

    I think the generally negative sentiment comes from crossed expectations. If you ask a "boot guy" what they think of Docs, they'll rightfully call them bad boots because the compromises they make in favor of cheaper manufacturing costs and out the box comfort are the exact kind of compromises boot guys _don't_ want in a boot. But Docs aren't made for boot guys, they're made for regular people. Thin corrected leather is pliable, lightweight, takes little to break in and is cheaper than quality full grain leather. Sneaker like cushioned soles further add to the comfort while making them cheaper to make. Bonded welts make them practically waterproof and, again, cheaper. These are all completely understandable compromises if you want cheap shoes to be comfortable standing in all day that look like boots. The one major remaining objection is the price. Docs are pretty expensive for street fashion boots.
    Heritage boots and street fashion boots are two entirely different kind of shoes, even if they both just look like boots. The former has an emphasis on quality materials and craftsmanship "the way it used to be done", and the latter is "how can I make that, but cheaper and more comfortable" and definitely tends to be more comfortable straight out the box. They shouldn't really be compared in the first place.

    How you had so little wear on your Docs confused me. Then I realised how many pairs of these alone you had.
    My only gripe (other than the pain of breaking in 1460s) is their wear pattern on the soles which become slippery, and treacherous on wet surfaces. I have been wearing them for over 40 years and they fail now much more quickly. 1460s, Barnies, Chukkas and shoes I've tried the lot. Solovair are like they used to be and beat any pairs of Docs that I've had since the millennium.

  • @Sbjweyk
    @Sbjweyk 8 місяців тому +3

    I love the look of doc martens but I have switched to solovair because they just wear out so fast and the comfort declines so rapidly after a certain time. I wore my first pair for about 4 years but exclusively in winter and they are gone, the sole has practically no profile anymore, the sole split from the welt, the plastic layer on the leather is disintegrating and the heel is a absolute mess.
    Nevertheless I bought a second pair and they just seemed even worse in quality I wore them one or two winters and then switched to solovair.
    I’m honestly a bit surprised that yours are still in so good shape because the soles of my newer pair have a very similar amount of wear to yours in just one year of effective wear.

      Honestly, I’m afraid when this pair of DOCs finally fail, if I get another pair of 1460s they won’t be as good as these. When I got these I initially wore them a few times a month. After I wore them on our trip to NY back in the day they gradually became my most worn shoes.
      For the last few years I have been wearing them 3-4 times a week year round. They are my default go to the office shoe. I was considered a essential worker so that also includes the Covid years. Didn’t miss a day at work and wore my DOCs majority of those days.

But as far as I know there is only one cobbler that gets the original doc soles to resole docs. He has a small UA-cam channel called key cobbler and you can send him yours. Other than that you could probably get solovair soles and let another cobbler put them on.

I got my crazy horse 1460's during a sale for over 40% less than retail and at that price you cannot really complain. Before I used to have Thursday Boots Captian Stormking's that literally fell apart (stitching and the undersole) after less than 2 years of wear. I totally agree! I have researched so much looking for good boots and a good price range and its been difficult. I live here in Portland, Oregon and finally just walked down to the Doc Martens store to look and try on shoes. I found the Wyoming pair of short boots for $110 and they are really comfortable. I own nothing but docs pretty much cause a lot of shoes hurt my feet after a while. I have flat feet with some kind of bone spur or something and other shoes can really trigger it and its extremely painful. I never have that issue with docs. I own so many kinds of docs and will stick with those. I don't have to buy shoes often. I was disappointed with their sandals I bought though. I got a lot of dirt on my feet and under my feet while wearing them and they were not comfortable. I think I might just sell them. But love the video and I totally agree.

People who do 't like Docs either have wide feet or flat feet or shit taste in boots. at the price they are at and the quality they offer, there's no value on these boots. they'll last just a year or so, before being useless. they're a toy rather than an actual shoe. they used to last for so much longer! they also look awful, like theyre made of plastic and feel wobbly and unstable. I used to be a fan, nowadays theyre throwaway shoes at almost $200. an Iron ranger is $330 and will last you 20 years. that's value. And they might not be girly, but lets admit it: women are the fan base of DM and their biggest users by far. I got tired of replacing bad quality boots every year or 2. Also they're everywhere, I get tired of seeing DM all over, they've lost their place as a stylish piece and their perceived coolness. So... bye bye DMs! now I buy quality shoes that will last and be made with good materials and are not a fashionable yet discardable item

      DM 1460 is definitely a causal/light duty work boot. As I stated in the video mine are going on 9 years roughly probably more. No issues what so ever. I spent a lot of time in them at remote transmitter sites and rack rooms etc, these boots are my go to work boots and have never let me down. They are also nice enough to go from work to play with a simple dust off!
      If they are a toy they are Tonka tuff lmao!
      Iron rangers are cool if you find them comfortable( I didn’t, they are the absolutely most uncomfortable shoes I’ve ever put on my feet) but they do look good. I find them very limiting aesthetically tho.. from a style perspective. The iron ranger might last you 20 years but it’s takes 10 years to break them in! Lmao I tried twice and threw in the towel!
      If women like the shoe that’s probably a good thing, I would think LOL.
      After 10ish years my 1460’s are coming close to wearing out. It’s a shame Doc doesn’t resole them because my upper still has plenty of life left in it! Still looking at other options but none of the other shoes I’ve mentioned are as versatile as the DM 1460.
      I think it’s interesting you only get a year or two out of your DM. The only shoe I’ve owned that fails that quickly is the Vans authentic in white specifically. Other than the vans my two high rotation shoes both last me well into the 5 -10 year range.

      @Randy Layhey lee OH yeah!? Well neither am I!
      I bought a pair of DM 8053s at a DM retail store in a mall with restaurants that charge $7.50 for a bowl of chicken noodle soup!
      I got the gaucho brown because I think brown works better with jeans and such.

    Been kicking myself for not caring for my docs I got when I was a kid in the 90s, bought a pair in the post 2010's...they are a bit shit tbh. Buying a pair of solovairs at some point in the nex week, QA just aint there with docs mores the pity.

      From all the research I did and personal experience. It seems, most of the issues are with corrected leather versions of the Docs and Solovair models. Maybe when my 1460s finally die I will get another pair to compare.

      @@KRTLyfe Thats the kicker, don't know what you got till you give it 10-20 years. Don't know what its like in the US, but in the UK and the environment I work in - tends to be a bit right leaning, old fashioned in outlook- popping out in a pair of docs causes a ruckus I've always enjoyed. Think I'll miss the staking my identity more than anything. Could just paint the stitching yellow I spose...just not the same.

    I only love their platform boots . The only 2 things I hate about them is the “breaking in”. I just had to buy a soft inner sole and put in them. Because yes they do hurt especially if you have them on all day.
    I just wear an inner sole with a longer sock with my Jadons
