Rook mentioned how bright Eurydice is in comparison to Orpheus, and how she casts a shadow on him. But the first time she sings, the shadow she casts on him is just that: SHADOW. It breaks through and replaces the blue semicircle that surrounded him before. When it surrounds him after, in her "absence", the shape is bigger than before. The fact that she's there at some point, temporarily reassuring him, and then leaves???? The loneliness SPIKES, the paranoia is sharper than before -- she was there at some point, yes, but she's not there NOW, she's not singing NOW. Also the way the shape is so big and comes back so quickly in comparison to Eurydice's slow fade away??? It ends up going over her, too, for a second.
Then there's an instrumental, letting it settle, letting it register -- the loneliness is SPIKING, audibly, the instruments ring so loud in Eurydice's silence. The Fates describe Orpheus's feelings again, only two lines but they DRAG with the cathedral editing and the actresses' own performances ("doubt comes in with tricky fingers, doubt comes in with fickle tongues" and that's IT). And then Orpheus sings, not letting the song settle now. By himself. The Fates even leave him. And this part is the high, raw part Banana Boat Charlie also mentions. Visually, the Fates linger, but it FEELS like they linger, like the slow aftereffect of an action they already committed before Orpheus sang. Then they disappear, and with them, their lanterns and yellow light -- which Eurydice also had. How much space Orpheus's blue takes up in emphasises there.
He's ALONE. With only his sadness and uncertainty and DESPERATION and the stairs and the doubt. The faltering heart.
The semicircle then SHRINKS SLIGHTLY AGAIN (this damn circle!!!!!) to allow the Fates to come back. They appear quickly, but their full, bright colours take a second (which to me proves the slow fade of the semicircle with Eurydice was purposeful!!!). The Fates are now the backing to ORPHEUS'S vocals, instead of the other way around!!! There's then light smudges behind Orpheus, and I'm anticipating Eurydice and then she ENTERS!! In like, one second. She doesn't have the bright petals behind her anymore, and the shadow she casts on Orpheus again replaces his circle. With the cathedral edit, I can only catch snippets of what she says, and it sounds like a stream of consciousness ('It won't be long...' 'Darkest hour... of the darkest night' and that one sounds BITING).
I'm not sure whether Eurydice was ever actually talking, or whether this was just her soliloquy like the rest of the song isn't aloud, it's Orpheus's thoughts and worries and DOUBTS. But still, on the LAST STEP, Orpheus turns back at her (I've never seen the musical live, so I don't know whether this is accurate to the musical, but it's accurate to one of the tellings of the myth, where Orpheus thinks they're out and free because HE'S stepped out and turns around in joy, but it's a clever incoporation regardless!). They're both sweating, so it's probably exertion from the climb over nerves that makes him sweat, but she noticeably looks shocked (wide-eyed and open-mouthed) and not necessarily happy. Her gasp leads us to assume it's betrayal, obviously, but you make it seem like she's not angry, she's not even disappointed, just... startled. Her opinion of Orpheus isn't tainted because of this mistake, but this DOUBT feels out of character for him (a wise person once said that Orpheus was optimistic at the start and Eurydice pessimistic, and then they swapped -- Old Eurydice wouldn't be surprised, but she IS because she's thinking like Orpheus, who would expect things to all go right and them to get a happy ending, and Orpheus turns 'round because he's doubtful and untrusting of Hades and even Eurydice, to an extent, and he'll only trust HIMSELF, his EYES, so he looks). Orpheus looks concerned, and nervous, even scared, possibly of her opinion of him now, possibly of whether she's there or not.
(ALSO THE DETAIL OF THE HAIR BEING THE SAME FOR MINI!THEM AND PROFILE!THEM AAAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHH)
The petals then come back, and she's gone, and Orpheus is left REACHING. He didn't want this. He never wanted this. He watches her go, straightening. He's just SAT there as a bell tolls for an uncomfortably long time. Then he hangs his head, hunched, and, again, it's silent. He's alone. There's no blue, this time, or shadow or Fates. There's the yellow freedom of the outside behind him and Hadestown in front and Orpheus is alone, alone, al--
End scene.
You delight and enamor me beyond words! THANK YOU so much for such a detailed and thoughtful analysis, this was a thrill beyond thrill to read!!!
@@druidforhire I didn't say it in my spiel up there but thank you for the amazing video!!! It was such a joy to get swept up in
Oh, and-I mention this only to add on to your already so beautifully in-depth analysis, I haven’t seen anybody mention this, and in the interest of transparency with my process: Eurydice glows with the same kind of halo that had surrounded Orpheus and the King during Epic III, and the same one that surrounds Orpheus and Eurydice in WFM II. She has that similar incredible presence, and yet the halo, her light, her joy and love and fear, stops right at Orpheus’ heels. It never reaches him. It’s also supposed to parallel Orpheus’ blue fog, I think.
She’s also specifically eight steps behind him, though I can’t remember why.
Sorry, I would have mentioned this earlier, but it’s been so long I literally forgot I did this until I started rereading comments!
2:41 his voice hits different. It's so high, and raw, and perfect. It SOUNDS like a Greek tragedy, that's the only way I can describe it.
Ikr?? And how his voice smoothly lowers in tone just gives me chills- it's magical
@@michellealcala6932 Legend says Damon Daunno's vibrato can kill a man at 10 paces...
A Greek tragedy indeed
His despair reminds me of Euridice's despair in "flowers"
his voice is so freaking beautiful and just... so ORPHEUS.
I feel like every hadestown song deserves its own cathedral edit :')))
Finally, the song with the sexiest harmonies in just the way it should be heard
Ok so I commented that before finishing the video and oooh I must say that hit hard ah fuck :((
I thought you said sexist and I was so confused-
The Fates said "Fuck Orpheus Rights" (This so beautiful I'm literally crying this song is already so haunting and then you did THAT and the fACES)
3:27 to end
Eurydice: (very frightened) "You're early."
(Beat. Orpheus is trembling in the silence.)
Orpheus: I missed you.
(He reaches out to her but she disappears.)
Orpheus: NO! (falls to his knees, weeping)
I JUST SAW THIS AND HOW DARE YOU, HOW DARE YOU PULL THAT LINE AND STAB ME WITH IT
OOOOOOW MY HEART
I can't take full credit for this. In the real song video, someone made a similar comment.
It’s strange how different context can give a line of dialogue a completely different meaning. Ouch.
Ok ok.. Just a thought.. What if...
After i've missed you.. A second pause and then..
Eurydice ran a bit, hand reaching for orpheus.. Orpheus' hand ready to accept her.. BUT! before she succeed, the floor already sunk in 15% or so.. And orpheus tried to lift her, but failed.. As she sinks, she cried his name once more "Orpheus"
And he yelled her name in agony "Eurydice!!"
Road to hell (reprise) starts to play
You are evil. Eviiiil I say. And wonderful but mostly evil. Super long comment is incoming because I am that Person. Again, like with Epic III guess who actually cried again? This person. I adore your usage of the colors, and how the blue surrounds Orpheus on this long staircase out. And the Fates and the choice to make them so much larger than Orpheus? Fantastic. I like how the Cathedral sound makes Orpheus' song before so grand, but in the themes and sound of Doubt Comes in it sounds lonely almost. And Eurydice. When she came in, alight with the hope and love that had swayed all of Hadestown and how it contrasts with how lonely Orpheus looks? Kill me. Plus, how she shone so brightly in the dark but cast the deepest shadows onto Orpheus.
One thing I always loved about Doubt Comes In, is how Orpheus gradually joins in with this sorrowful song. At first, following the Fates lead, and then singing more as doubt consumes him. And how when he sings "Where are you now?" How it sounds almost crying the line out the second time he sings, with more sorrow and passion. And when he turns, right at the very top. The expressions they both wore, and how you just let it hang there. yeah that? Please, I need my heart. How she just crumbles away, so much like the petals that surrounded them all in your Epic III edit. How they both reach for each other. How much you convey with just the outlines, and that last shot of Orpheus. You just let it hang there, with the colors of the world above, the yellow and Orpheus alone. I think that killed me the most, that silence you left for those last few seconds. Also oops I really, really went off on a tangent there but I had to shower love, praise, and dissection of the amazing work you put into this. So thank you for breaking my heart all over again. ;-;
;_; hey dude i want you to know how much this comment means to me. i loved reading this and seeing you pick apart my work. it’s so validating to see someone take so much interest in it and really care enough to dig into all the details i put into this, and you are so so kind, thank you so much for the praise and the analysis 💛💛✨✨💛🌻🌻☀️☀️✨✨💛💛💛🌻🌻🌻☀️⭐️⭐️
Something I noticed was their postures, you can tell a lot about a person based on the way they stand, for orpheus he's hunched, closed off and weary, looking as though he might collapse at any moment
Eurydice on the other, is confidently moving forward, with both of her hands held out, she's also constantly looking up, while orpheus is looking down
Silence is never so loud as the end of this song.
This song got nerfed in the OBC version, IMO - nothing will ever top "doubt comes in like vinegar and turpentine" for me
Agreed! I don't know why the new songs lost so much of their lyricism and poeticness 😢
@@bananaboatcharlieIMO the OBC has a tighter book and a more pronounced thesis - the ideas endurance of hope and the timelessness of tragedy is less subtle than it is in the NYTW version, what with all the extended lyrics of Road to Hell and a lot more ensemble parts. And I think it's a better play for it, tbh.
I have no idea why they cut Persephone's part from Chant (Reprise) though, as well as the new Epic III which I think is significantly worse than the NYTW version, which is one of the most powerful songs in context I've ever heard in my life, LMAO.
This makes it really feel that the fates are truly just thoughts that echo in our head
You’re doing the work of ancient gods.
And men!
Reminder that one of the earlier scripts had Eurydice say "You're early" while Orpheus replies with "I missed you" and that just adds a whole new level of pain 😭😭😭
I love how wicked The Fates looked. They are the wolves who howl inside your head, after all.
oh i am sobbing,,,,,, oh gods,,, your use of the lanterns and eurydice as an even brighter source of light than those made me cry??? only adds to the tragedy that is how orpheus felt in the dark and desperately needed to turn to the light, therefore turning towards eurydice :'((( god i hope you make more!!! thank u for all of ur cathedral edits
Holy shit this is everything I dreamed it would be. After hearing your edit of Epic III (which I literally watch/listen to daily it's incredible) I would listen to Doubt Comes In and imagine the echoing atmosphere. This literally gave me chills and was even better than I could have imagined with your art style (that closeup when Orpheus turns around? Oof.) Thank you so much for this video, I absolutely love your cathedral edits and you definitely have a knack for them!
!! gosh, thank you!!!!
*LYRICS*
THE FATES
Doubt comes in
And strips the paint
Doubt comes in
And turns the wine
Doubt comes in and leaves a trace
Of vinegar and turpentine
Where are you? Where are you now?
Doubt comes in
And kills the lights
Doubt comes in
And chills the air
ORPHEUS
Doubt comes in and all falls silent
It's as though you aren't there
Where are you? Where are you now?
EURYDICE
Orpheus
You're shivering
Is it cold or fear?
Just keep singing
The coldest night
Of coldest year
Comes right before the spring
ORPHEUS & FATES
Doubt comes in
With tricky fingers
Doubt comes in
With fickle tongues
ORPHEUS
Doubt comes in and my heart falters
And forgets the songs it sung
Where are you? Where are you now?
EURYDICE
Orpheus
Hold on
Hold on tight
It won't be long
the darkest hour
Of the darkest night
Comes right before the dawn-
ORPHEUS TURNS
I like commenters like you, who post lyrics when the poster doesn't
Saw this in my subfeed and said “yeah I’ve got time to cry right now.”
absolutely beautiful as always. their close-ups nearly brought me to tears, i'm not gonna lie
Parallel to Hades, the doubt makes him forget the song of his love.
This cathedral effect along with the artwork honestly make the song really creepy ngl
oh god I felt That Moment as if it were for the first time and I am so shattered ugfhjdj these are sososo beautiful druid THANK YOU
This is without a doubt one of the most haunting songs I’ve ever listened to.
I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there’s just something about how the voices echo throughout the song that perfectly executes that raw feeling of loneliness, fear, hope as the song goes on, and then pure hopelessness at the very end.I’ve never heard anything quite like it, and it’s beautiful.
Please do "if it's true..." (the live version) keep up the good work mate! Your artwork is litterally the best thing I've seen all day
unfortunately, the live recording does not have If It's True except on bootlegs, so i cannot. :') and thank you!
@@druidforhire ua-cam.com/video/5qix98A2NL0/v-deo.html I meant the 2017 live version, sorry if that wasn't clear :)
Evelyn Maher no, i’m aware; but again that’s a bootleg, not an official recording, so i’m unsure how it’d come out
@@druidforhire then will the original work?
@@eviem.6903 Maybe. Not every song is suited to the cathedral sound, but if it works, you might see it. And hey, maybe the OBCR version will fit.
The harmonies with this effect just took me into another dimension
I absolutely love Orpheus' lines in the Broadway version as well as his visible doubt (and the addition of the La La La La in the song), but there's just something about this version that makes me fascinated. The Fates' harmonies make it very hypnotozing, I can literally feel the fear in Orpheus' voice. Plus, the "and forgets the songs it sung" line just kills me. How I wish they had kept the Fates harmonizing through the whole song in the new version, or at least Orpheus' old lines. A mixture of both versions would be pretty long but I would gladly listen to it all day.
the doubt is everywhere and the silence is deafening... wild
The first couple times i watched your epic III video i only got about thirty seconds in because i have a short attention span and cant just sit down and watch stuff, especially music because its background noise to me so to focus on it is really hard. I just sat down and watched this entire video start to finish and immediately watched all of you other videos. These are incredible! I love the way you visualize it all ty for making these!
haha yeah--these videos were originally just supposed to be mostly focused around the audio with just a visual slapped on so it wasn't just a black space, with little change-y bits as easter eggs. you'll notice that especially with my very early videos that there's usually just one tiny thing that changes. then epic iii happened and i uh. well. *Whoops*
thank you kindly for your words!
AAAH UR ART IS SO MESMORISING I THOUGHT THE LANTERNS THAT THE FATES WERE HOLDING WERE SWINGING SIDE TO SIDE !!!! Ur POWER!!!! ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
HORYAAH................ I LOVE U
OUGH this is so good and stunning and it's just. Not only did you put perfect, gorgeous fitting art to the lonely feeling of the song, but the cathedral effect, the echoing hollow sound really emphasizes the feeling of marching up a tunnel.
You snapped on this one
THIS SILHOUETTE ART IS AMAZING!!
2:41
THESE VOCALS 😩😩😩
I listened to Hadestown literally like an hour ago and I’m obsessed. First thing I did was look for animatics (second thing was find out when/if it was ever coming to my state lol) and I could not find one for Doubt comes in which broke my heart cuz that was the one I had the strongest visuals for while listening to the musical. And then I stumbled upon your cathedral edits and this is literally almost picture perfect to what I had envisioned while I listened. Absolutely fantastic and heart wrenching!! I love it!
This one, the song already sends chills, but this version is just another level of stunning
3:30 *snapping sounds intensify*
Ooooooh my goodness this is amazing. I got chills through the whole thing, especially when Eryducye would start appearing while singing. And the ending, oooof my heart, the ending was phenomenal as well.
I have been waiting for you to upload this song!! You never disappoint oml
:D!!!!!!!!!! You have no idea how happy I am that you caught onto that detail. I'm absolutely gleeful.
and! thank you very much for the compliments
@@druidforhire I love all the details you put in! The art work is so amazing :D
I know this was posted a long time ago but oh my god you've killed me in one shot I love this
I love this shadow art aesthetic so so much, it adds an extra layer to each of the songs you enhance, especially here
I'm not sure what I would pay to see all the songs like this, but it would be a lot.
for the last few months I just keep going back to these edits
You flatter me.
I stared crying a little at the end, now that I get visuals with the song I feel so much more emotion with it 😭 this is amazing
I come back here over the years to listen to these edits because wow
This sounds so much more haunting
I'm about to create a religion where all the songs are from Hadestown...
_Join Hadeshell, we have sad songs_
This is literal magic. I’m speechless.
But now I can’t get the thought that Hellfire from the Hunchback of NoterDamn would sound great in this style.
But anyway, I hate you because now I’m crying
I realize that this is a year old, and you might not see this comment but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just want to say how hauntingly beautiful this is. The artwork is stunning. You are able to portray how alone Orpheus felt, how small he felt. The fates voices seem to surround him; giving him no choice but to listen to him. And how sorrowful he sounds, how at first his distrust was merely an echo of what he heard, but towards the end he is the one leading. And Eurydice's voice echos around, giving him some hope of finding her, but her voice always seeming out of reach, like he can only hear the echo of her.
And the _artwork_ oh my god- there is no way I could ever describe how much the artwork supports the story, not just the story of Orpheus, but Eurydice.
The fates are so much larger than Orpheus, showing just how small Orpheus felt. And the lanterns that they held only provided enough to see them. The light didn't reach Orpheus, nor Eurydice. He could only see the fates shadows, and their cruel smiles.
And Eurydice, she was Orpheus's hope, his sun, his warmth. While we can't always see her, we can see in the way that she leans forward that she is trying to follow him the best she can, trying to be as close as possible. She wants to go back with him, even in the cold, because she believes that Orpheus can fix things. But because of the way she shines, she casts a shadow onto Orpheus, casting the darkest on his head. She was forced to watch him struggle infront of her, only able to hope that he can make it.
And I dont even know what to say about the last few seconds. I truly don't know how to describe the emotions that they convey. The way that Orpheus looks shocked that she _was_ there, that he truly believed that Hades had tricked him; The way that Orpheus is happy to see Eurydice; but then the horror of how he realized what he'd done. And Eurydice, she looks somewhat surprised to see that Orpheus had turned around early; distrustful of not just Hades but the world. He was the one to convince her that the world could be better, that it wasn't all bad, and he was the one to give up on that hope. She also looks sad, not just because that she can't come back to life, but for Orpheus. While yes, she had to follow him, watch him struggle, but at least she _knew_ he was there. He hadn't had that luxury. And the way that he tries to follow her, to _ catch_ Eurydice, but ultimately fails? The way that he crumbles to the ground, but not being able to follow her, nor fade away, but he is forced to stay there. Alone. Not even the fates are with him.
I know I have done this incredible piece of art injustice but I truly do not think there are enough words to convey how gorgeous this is.
There is little better gift for an artist than someone who takes the time to sit down and pick out everything they love about their work. Thank you.
I saw this and I literally said aloud "Awww hell yeah!!!"
This videos make the songs incredibly immersive. It's a whole new level of story-telling. A perfect edit for a song about being alone, doubtful, surrounded by nothing but the ominous darkness and his returning echoes.
and OH MY GOD THE FINAL IMAGES I AM BROKEN.
Edit; guys listen to this in your car. It’s awesome.
might try that.
this is unbelievably haunting, thank you so much. both the broadway version and the OG version are heartbreaking, but with the cathedral setting it seems even more transcendent and devastating.
This literally inspired a fanfic I made this is so perfect I come back to it every few months
I'm so happy to be able to inspire others!
You had to make it at the last step...
The most spectacular piece of music ever written honestly
This made me cry
I literally got goosebumps. this is a beautiful visual to match a beautiful song. great job!
I realized that "Who are you?" and "Who am I?" lines that get repeated throughout the show solidifies the boundaries between statuses and the limitations of what you can and cannot do when you belong to either one.
I saw this live a few days ago and it was phenomenal. I got the autographs from Orpheus, Hermes, Eurydice, and a few of the ensemble including the fates. I’m so happy about it
Im actually crying this is the first time I've heard this song and I think my heart just shattered. Amazing job op!
This is so beautiful and sad, good work. Time to go cry.
😭 I need the whole album like this. It gave me chills
GOD THAT WAS SO GOOD
one of my fav songs from hadestown. it fits SO well! thank you for making this

this is by far my favorite because you have just done my actual favorite song from the show and i love you. so. yeah.

I love all of your cathedral edits, but this one especially is just... ITS JUST SO AMAZING. I can’t wait to see what you make next!
Oh my god! The gasp! I’m listening to this on a bus and I actually jumped and looked around, it shook me to my core
oooh you should do wait for me performed in a cathedral
inSANE how beautiful these are! The energy and the emotion. It truly feels like an ancient yet ageless story.
and here I thought it couldn't sound anymore haunting
Okay this sound filter adds so much to the song but also...the art??? It's amazing!!!
This is so fitting for this song I love how you depicted the fates but the way she say Orpheus . But that ending that ending broke me from her gasp to him rushing to her 😭😭
Omg I just found this and love it!! Love the audio and the visuals are super pretty too! Great job!! That ending hurt though, ouch, I’m emotional.
PLEASE BRING DAMON AND NABIYAH AND MAKE THEM SING THIS VERSION ON BROADWAY 😭😭😭
It’s so hauntingly beautiful- if I had a choice I’d choose this over the original
I’m legit getting chills, oh my god-
How does the gasp get me every damn time
i have actually cried at all of these
WOW this is SO SAD oh my gosh i haven't cried over this song in ages and YET here i go
Will I ever stop loving these? No, never.
What does the line "Doubt comes in and leaves a trace of vinegar and turpentine" means?
you are doing god's work
Oh wow, this is beautifully haunting!
What a great song. What a fantastic animation.
this is also super good!!
The art for the fates is hella freaky man - I love it!
This has given me goosebumps
The art is GORGOUS
Im so used to the broadway version this caught me off guard
this is absolutely gorgeou s
THE ENDING WAS SO SAD :(((((
This is everything I ever needed in my heart!!
