Finally, somebody said it. They always love to bring up Alexander but never seem to realize they reject all his claims of divinity out of hand, yet seem to think they deserve their claims of divinity accepted.

I agree. Many youtube videos I watch do not even need to be watched. I listened to a video just last night on the Boeing 737 stall escape maneuver and I dont think anything in that video required actually watching it to understand it. I could be wrong, though, since I didn't actually watch it. :) But I know for a fact that the full impact of a Mr. D video requires watching it.

I was raised Roman Catholic. 20 years ago I joined the Navy and was issued dog tags marked *NORELPREF* as opposed to *RC.* This upset me at the time but clearly not enough to have them corrected and replaced. Here I am now, looking at those dog tags and wondering if that mix up was something of a miracle.

Christopher Hitchens covered this well in the comparison to Socrates. To Hitch, it doesn't matter if Socrates existed, because it is what he said that matters, and we have those words to learn from regardless of who wrote them. But for Jesus to matter, he not only had to exist, but had to be divine. Anything less than this makes him nothing more than a preacher. And the writings that claim to be his words are mostly bad advice.

Much like many of the stories of the Bible (the exodus out of Egypt, for example), when there exists no written record in a society where absolutely everything was recorded (Rome and Egypt), one has to question the validity of the stories.
If there are absolutely no records of a person or their "miracles", then the truth is most likely that they never existed at all.

@@calonstanni Hi. I agree with Diana. There's a daisy chain of events here that leads right up to Christianity.
Alexander conquered and introduced Hellenism to the barbarian masses. Most folk went for it but there were always a few diehard traditionalists who resisted. The generals, aka the diadochi, squabbled for control and basically bumped each other off. Judah / Yehud ended up on the southern edge of the area controlled by the Seleucids.
A few generations later one of them, Antiochus IV, decided to reinforce Hellenistic culture and thus made enemies of the traditionalist Jews. They revolted (Judah the Maccabee, etc.) and after a guerrilla war (part funded by Rome) they won! (Antiochus had other more pressing problems on his eastern flank). The Hasmonean dynasty was established (think Taliban). Progressive Jews were persecuted on and off.
So far so historical (if over simplified). Now for the hypothesis. Have you come across the Greek Mysteries hypothesis for the origins of Christianity?
The originators were most probably Hellenistic Jews from Alexandria who cobbled together a Jewish version of the Mysteries some time in the mid-first C BCE. They got round the lack of a pantheon of gods by using the Messiah figure as their dying and rising God-Man. Their motive was to encourage like-minded homeland Jews who were suffering persecution from the Hasmonean traditionalists. This makes the earliest "Christians" Gnostics of a sort.
They employed the usual two tier approach. There were the Outer Mysteries, open to all and consisting of the "stories of Jesus". Those few who did more than just accept these fictions and asked the right questions were initiated into the Inner Mysteries and, if successful, in time attained Gnosis - experiential knowledge of God. (That's an awfully brief summary - please research further).
It was NOT a success; most Jews saw through it. However, when presented to Gentiles and shorn of the (painful) requirements of Jewish Law, it did much better.
In the upheavals following the first Jewish revolt, some groups of proto-christians lost their leaders (the tried and tested Roman tactic was - kill the shepherd and you can ignore the sheep). With no skilled initiators left, middle management had to do the best it could, which was to ditch the Inner Mysteries and concentrate on the Jesus stories. Fictions became historical fact. "Only believe, and you shall be saved!" "Incarnatus est!"
This scandalised other groups, but what could they do? Rome became the focus of these authoritarian literalists and, in time, their organisation and mass appeal attracted the attention of a 4th C emperor. The rest, as they say, is history.
Such is the hypothesis. The poor old Gnostics were too elitist; their initiations took too much time and effort for most. They had no chance against those who knew God's mind and were never slow to tell their (grateful) flock what that was. Now as then, the poor and mean and humble need a simple faith. They are too busy surviving (or whatever) to spend much time thinking about their faith. And their leaders know this and rejoice!
If you got this far, thanks for reading.

Most say that the bible doesn't tell us. I ask hem if such an event as people known to have been dead and buried coming back to life and walking around town should have made it into Roman history and I get crickets. If the bible is true then this happened. Why is Jesus resurrection the only thing that matters? I agree with you that the historical concept of Jesus doesn't really matter that much in a conversation about the Biblical Jesus. It would be like bringing up the Historical Pocahontas in a conversation about the Disney movie. Except at least in that conversation everyone knows that the Disney movie is fictional and no one seriously believes that Pocahontas or John Smith ever randomly broke out into song for no reason or spoke to a magical talking willow tree.
I do disagree with you however that you can't dissociate the two... Actually that's really the wrong word to use here cause there's nothing to dissociate. Just as Disney's Pocahontas and the real world Historical figure are two entirely different things as one actually exists and the other is a work of fiction so to is Jesus. You actually NEED to be able to separate the two to understand that the Biblical concept of Jesus is not Historical as that fictional character as he's written in the Bible never existed. The historical Jesus is not the Jesus of the Bible. He's a mortal man who's mother was not a virgin but I imagine she told people she was and convinced them she was because if they knew she cheated on her husband and had a child with a man she wasn't married to back in that time period both her and the child would of been killed. I'm sure no knew back then that it's possible to have sex without breaking the hymen cause there's people today who still don't know it's possible and that's all she would have to do to convince people she was still a virgin is show an unbroken hymen. Such a thing would have easily been unheard of and enough to convince people that the only way she could of gotten pregnant is God did it. The supposed miracles Jesus performed were either never done at all or in some causes such as turning water into wine can be explained as modern stage magicians have use slight of hand tricks to do exactly the same thing. It's not real magic, it's something literally anyone can learn how to do. And the resurrection just straight up never happened otherwise Jesus himself would still be around today leading the Christian religion himself. Since no one has ever seen him walking around among us, and given a piece of toast some people thinks looks like Jesus made the news I imagine meeting the actual real life Jesus would have also made the news on a daily basis if he were alive walking around among us right now. Anything magical the Bible claims about Jesus is just like the magical talking willow tree from that movie, clearly that didn't happen and if you think that's an accurate representation of the real history, I've got an invisible mansion to sell you, don't worry about undressing on what appears to be an vacant lot in the middle of a field, I assure you there's a huge mansion there and no one can see you while you're inside it unless you want them to. ;)
