I loved how you highlighted the roads on the map first before showing video footage of that particular road. I can finally know which roads I may wish to avoid and why. Brilliant! cheers
I used to climb down there. We would hang out at Miguels Pizza near Slade. I drove through the Nada tunnel on the way there. I have a 2011 Xterra S now. I need to get back down there asap.
Being from NJ but now live near the Big Horn National Forest in Wyoming, and having been an OTR truck driver for a couple years, I can say I miss Kentucky. If I hadn’t moved to Wyoming 14.5 years ago from NJ, I’d had gone to Kentucky. PS, thanks for the fun mountain music in the background.
@@everready19373 the cold isn’t bad. It’s the wind. I love cold weather over heat though so I don’t mind. When this winter it hot -54°F I was having a blast!
The trail looks fairly open. When I was on Pumpkin Hollow a few months ago the tree branches and bushes were really taking over trail…. Got some nice pinstripes on my rig that I managed to buff out. Lol
Thank you for taking the time to make video of your trip, which I know wasn't easy, and for editing and uploading the video so we could all enjoy your adventure. I think I'll wait until I have a 3" lift and 33" all terrain tires instead of attempting any of that in my stock V6 4Runner, and even then, I'm not into rock crawling. I'd like to try the tamer portions on my little adventure motorcycle. Two friends and I rode the Hillbilly Triangle in the Daniel Boone National Forest last week. It's 80 miles of all paved road (Irvine-Beattyville-McKee-Irvine), but it's very scenic with lots of hills and curves. We caught the peak foliage. I think I'll edit the GoPro footage tonight and post an unlisted video to share with friends.
I've got a stock 5g4r with Wildpeak AT3W and was able to do most of the trails including Fixer Lecco, Spass Creek, and Pumpkin Hollow in late September 2021 (we did not try Old Fincastle/Hell Creek or Mountain Springs Rd). Just take your time, a spotter, and and a friend who can assist with recovery if needed (we didn't need it)
@@Adventure_RM - I think my 4th gen 4Runner is too nice for off road adventures. :-) If I had a 5th gen it would be very hard for me to take it down a rock strewn trail. I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Thanks for the info. If I was a young man, I'd ride the Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway on a dual sport motorcycle. We're getting some rare 72 degree mid-November weather tomorrow. A friend and I are going to ride from Lexington to The Gorge to ride the Red River Rally that I bicycled in 2006. It should be a great motorcycle ride on our ADV bikes.
I really wish I could have joined you guys. A few of us went there over Labor Day weekend last year and had a blast. Old Fincastle Road was a riot. We didn't have any trouble getting my FJ on 35's or my buddy's Tacoma on 33's over that rock but it got super gnarly and was a giant mud hole further up the trail. We got to a point where the road was washed out and completely impassable and had to turn back. On the way back, I slid down a hill we actually had to winch up and I almost rolled. Overall, that area is gorgeous. Can't wait to take another trip up there. Watching your well made video brought back a lot of memories.
This was the best video of the DBBB I’ve seen yet and most helpful. Like you, I’m from Illinois (Belleville) building out my 2012 FJ TTSE to do what you’re doing with plans to hit the DBBB next year with friends. Thank you again!
Great Video guys! I had a blast last weekend down there in my Subaru, was a little more selective on which routes we took, and did need some recovery gear at one point. But it was awesome, we'll be heading back down again!
Awesome video. Beautiful country side. This is a great country!! Great trail maintenance blurb too. People need to get out to the trails either by SUV or by foot (or both),
We did Spaas and Pumpkin same direction as you two weeks ago. Our group was 3 renegades, New cherokee and my old liberty. Ppl said the only way we would get up the beginning of pumpkin hollow unless a real jeep pulled us up. They were proven wrong. The biggest tire was a 32, I I run a 29.
Good video, it gives me a idea of what it was like I figured it was a bit more adventurous. Looks a bit like a prescribed route sort of like a offroad park. A bit less of the usual explore and camp roadside that I am used to. I hate mud as well but need to go south one of these days.
I would love to do this one day. I am brand new to overloading and just have a stock 2021 Toyota ORP so I may need to do some upgrades before I attempt this on my own.
Good video! and this area definitely has awesome wheeling. I passed by y'all while doing the Red Clay Rally in Kentucky. Don't remember the portion exactly, but it was down in a valley by the creek. White 4th Gen.
Great video! Very informative. Can you believe we did some of that in the van? And in April... Pumpkin Hollow was a complete mess, I can't believe we made it out in one piece, lol. (P.S. was that a pig slapping its own butt?)
Hey guys! I’m planning on making this trip in September I have a 2018 Chevy 1500 on 33s with a 2 in lift. This will be my first overland trip! This summer I’m going to put steel bumpers, winch, and rock sliders on my truck to make it more capable. Oh, and get a full sized spare tire. One question I have is what PSI are your tires at because I have ridge grapplers as well. And is there anything else you guys can think of before I try this out. Thank you guys for the video and I appreciate any input!
We did the west/hard section last Sunday. Honestly, if you’re into scenery like me, you probably went the better direction. I have to pick pounds of leaves out of my frame holes and clay mud that a pressure washer barely removes. lol 35’s we’re borderline if you want to avoid scraping or bumping hard. More like 37’s…
good video, how did you guys bypass the deep water creek and the section after that? Looking at maps, I cant see anything to get around them. I also cant find the route in Avenza, Thanks
People brag out west how tough their trails are. I think these trails in KY are some of the toughest. Rocks, mud, deep water and aggressive rural folk landowners! 🤣
We do a huge bunch of wheeling in the west. There's huge rocks, steep inclines, everything that makes an offroad trip fun. Same great features Kentucky has. But, the west is missing one catalyst, water, or better yet, mud. Yup, we believe the wheeling, in general, east of the Mississippi is more challenging because of the slipping, sliding, and lack of traction.
Thanks for the video with MAP overlays - wish more people did this! Question though, when you were on Hell Creek Rd and stopped at the water crossing how did you get on the other side without going over that rock garden by Old Fincastle rd?
Thanks for replying so quick. Much appreciated. We plan on visiting the DBBB in June with another couple in a JKU. We both have no lockers so i need to plan a fun but not stressful vacation. LOL We're coming from Rogers AR area. Looking at the map of that area it looks like there is Shumaker Ridge rd and KY2016 that i can see on the map. Can you say if either ot these is what you took to bypass the water crossing the the "rock Garden"? Thanks again.@@WanderlostOverland
Quick mechanical question...did you guys regear with the weight of your bumper and all? I have an 18 4runner with 295 tires and a Hefty front bumper but stock rear. Looking at a hitch wheel carrier or full rear, but wondering if it's time to regear first. Love your vids and advice!
For the first couple days we aired down a little from 38 down to 28psi. For Spaas and Pumpkin we went down to 18. It was a fantastic trip! e can't wait to come back and do more.
Loved the info. Can you steer me to more info about the trail? The app you recommend didn't let me find the trails. We are intermate off roaders and a bit cautious.

I'm so mad!!!!! Your in my state and in an area I love.. My phone never rang. I understand you don't know me or have my number BUT that's no excuse. Would love to meet you guys and hit some trails with you. Sky bridge (12:20) is amazing and my son has Nada Tunnel in one of his UA-cam videos.
“David’s Big Boulder Beach” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 As a local who grew up running these trails I can guarantee that it has never been referred to as that. I’m guessing someone named David made the map and decided it needed a name or one of us locals just made it up to screw with whoever we had to show how to navigate these trails 😂. Probably so.

With all the transitions from hard road to offroad how often do you air down and back up?
Much thanks for the FAQ at the end!
For a route like this with the many transitions, instead of airing up and down constantly, we compromise and set the tires at around 26 psi.
