- In Texas, a black doctor has filed a lawsuit against Chase Bank for racial discrimination for refusing to deposit her check or open a new account for her.
Dr. Malika Mitchell Stewart wanted to deposit a $16,000 check from her employer. Associates at the bank began to question her age, occupation, and the check's validity, ultimately denying her service.
Here to tell us more about this humiliating experience is Dr. Malika Mitchell Stewart and her attorneys, Paul Stafford and Justin Moore.
JP Morgan responded to the incident saying: "We take this matter very seriously and are investigating the situation. We have reached out to Dr. Mitchell-Stewart to better understand what happened and apologize for her experience."

Outing racism like this can only bring to it to white and black people that Chase isn't where your money needs to be. If a bank refuses to open an account for this black woman, it should be on every media.
@@jacquelineneely2100 it would have been great if this had gone viral and the black community decided to pull their money out of Chase Banks across the country .
Chase Bank messed up big-time . As a white person I think it's rotten they treated this young lady in such a manner and they were not professional ...to say the very least .
Thats a lot a change to sweep under a rug, LMAO, ok its Friday so am just kidding about that part. The woman will get way more than the $16,000 from them for their stupidity. I had a teller at a Chase Bank in Des Moines, Iowa ask me "what does a boy like you do to get clothes and a car like that?" a few years ago. I ended up closing my accounts, and later, left the state. For anyone wondering, I told the $15/hour teller, "medical school, and I'm 53, I'm not a 'boy.' We get to vote, own property and everything!"
....riiiight.
YESSSS!!!

There's always one mediocre pink face in the comments that says "nuh-uh" when discrimination is brought up lol
For foreigners to understand, going to the bank as a black or brown person in America is like a foreigner going through immigration at a US airport: there is tension, unease and an irrational feeling that you have done something wrong.
Thanks for the context.
Remove brown from the comment, they ain't your damn friends so stop including them.

Levon, I was a bank teller as well. The bank could've call the clinic and the bank in which the check was drawn on and verify that the check wasn't a fraud. I hope she gets a lump sum from her lawsuit. Sadly Chase Bank is probably still treating black customers this way.
Thank you
So exhausting.
This happened to me (a black woman) this week in Texas. My check was rejected for days for mobile deposit. Then blocked for further attempts for mobile deposit with the message that the "security certificate" was not valid. When I called 3 days into rejection, I was told that I didnt hsve enough money in my account to cover the check if it was not valid. I was told to go into bank where the branch had the right "to refuse" to deposit it. So I dont know why they wanted me in branch. I told the CSR it was discrimination to refuse to accept my mobile deposit and tell me to go into bank. This meant that I dont have the mobile deposit service available to other customers. After the call, the bank took one of my attempted mobile deposits and approved it and just held money. So my bills are late and I have been assessed fees I couldnt afford to pay.
As a white person the closest Ive come to this is being treated very poorly by a bank employee who apparently thought my County check was Welfare. It was actually Child and Spousal Support I refused to ever be helped by him again I cannot fathom what others have endured

JP Morgan Chase is not the only bank. Instead of trying to prove to them that the check was authentic, she should’ve gone to another bank. She wasn’t trying to cash the check; she was trying to open an account using that check as her first deposit. Filing the lawsuit is the right thing to do. If she wins the lawsuit, she should deposit the proceeds in a bank that treats her like she’s the customer.
In California, that bank manager would have been arrested because this kind of discrimination is against the law.
I'm a retired IT manager from a large bank. The first questions were valid. Because of money laundering laws questions like what do you do, where is the check from, and other personal informamation is required. However, that information is to help the teller investigate if money is possibly illegal, not whether or not a check is fake. As mentioned in the video, the teller could have called the issuing bank or business.
Additionally, I can tell you as a white dude, any checks over a couple hundred dollars are deposited on a hold until they are validated and cleared by the bank they come from. So, their argument that they won't even try to deposit it because they think it is fake is total BS. I worked in a few industries in my IT career, and believe me, the banking industry is among the worst. Insurance companies are probably the only places that treat people worse than banks. Also, the bigger the banks, the worse the experience. Local credit unions are normally a better place to bank, if you can get hooked into one.
And then not all credit unions are good. We left one after banking there for years after they screwed up our account and said it was our fault. I told them that if they do not fix it; my wife and I are leaving their credit union and so will many members of my family. I did not tell them this, but I worked for a very large business and had face to face contact with many people each day and I can tell people I know not to bank there. They finally fixed the issue but with no real apology so we left anyway and love the credit union we are at now for over 20 years.
Dear Lucius McCray: It must be nice to become a doctor, understanding the throughgoing aspects of wanting near perfection -- then have a cloudy understanding of others who want to be just as meticulous.
Yep agree on credit unions, smaller...usually people focused.
There is always two side of the story. Love to hear from the bank. Maybe she was rude to the banker for questioning the check and took offense to it and starting mouthing off to the teller. U know when people have high achievement they think the own the place and start being condescending to other people.
@@unclevizzynot everyone that is educated is rude. I have met more uneducated people being rude then educated. Not sure where u from or your education level. But this is not right even if she got upset she had a right too. How about u get treated less then human and see how u feel. Everyone knows banks put holds on checks so this could of been a easy task. For you to not see wrong in this shows your level of common sense.
I have gone through the same when I first graduated. My husband had the same racist problems, and we complained, and they just called us and apologized only. This particular bank chase always seems to give us a problem, so I go to another branch and avoid that one. I hope you win and beat them.
This happened to me in OKC a couple years ago. I was actually trying to withdraw a couple thousand dollars, nothing major, was treated so nasty, and denied accessing my money all together. Roughly 15-20 minutes after leaving the bank, I received a phone call from the manager apologizing. The crazy thing is, I’ve been banking with NF since 2013 and had never experienced such poor customer service and foul treatment.
I was a bank teller in college. This is beyond racist. When someone comes in with a large check to cash or deposit it is typically put on an automatic hold. The funds are verified during that holding time. The bank employees were being the evil racists they are. I hope she gets what she is suing for plus additional punitive damages. Because these bank employees were jealous of this beautiful black woman’s accomplishments, they cost the bank a lawsuit and probably lost their crappy jobs.

...and what gets me is no one ever wanting a check cashed--just wanting to deposit!!! That's how you know it's racism!
You should have sued them.
I wouldn’t use any facility that had a problem with me trying to deposit my money!
Do you still bank with chase ?
Are you black?
I had a similar problem with Herbert and Burke Bank when I worked as a PA for nexthealth in Ashburn, Va in 2010 when I went in to open an account with my paycheck for 18,000.00.
I had to have the manager call my employer/partner, Dr. Habib to verify that he wrote the check. Yes. I said eighteen thousand dollars. I wanted to open an account with the same Bank as my employer since my bank, Bank of America was putting a 10 day hold on my deposit. The assistant manager called security to stand next to the door even after she verified the account and called Dr. Habib.
Chase is the worst bank in the business for personnel account holders. Why would anyone want to bank there is beyond me. So many fees its ridiculous, In the past.
Those tellers, managers (or whatever they were) must've wanted to get fired.
@Anette C, God has hardened their hearts, now we soften their behind back pockets.
The Road To Reparations. Then Convert to Gold, the world's true currency.
Fire them wont change a thing. Get your own damn bank!
Exactly 💯 ASAP
They are white supremacist as employees,,chase Bank is a corporation and not a racist person, people are racist and chase needs to deal with them..
@@DavidOwenWard EXACTLY! Stop begging for acceptance. There are plenty of places where white people do good business and there are plenty of black owned businesses. Give your business where it's appreciated. Hell, banks are horrible overall. Credit unions are much better.
They made an executive decision based on "their feelings" and not protocol. To flat out refuse to do what a bank is supposed to do is nuts.
white ameriKKKa.
Exactly, all they needed to do was follow protocol. Feelings and personal bias have no place in business period.
It was this young lady's fault. How dare she confuse these people by being black and a doctor with money!
@@MrZlathan3 Right! And that's just what it be like! They're like, "No. This just can't be right! We know she stole the check, the name, the whole identity!" 😔😒
@@ElleMarieF23 It's a glitch in their matrix. It disrupted their whole world view and sense of reality. And what confirms what you're saying about the mentality: that "this just can't be right" -- is that in case after case they consistently make the accusation and call law enforcement without even bothering to simply confirm the validity of the check! One would think that they would at least learn to *act* unbiased and cover their ass by checking.
This is getting out of hand already I feel so bad for my black brothers an sisters because this is normal behavior for these banks. We need to do somethin
Yes, I saw this one last year. Unreal
I’m proud of the doctor and her attorney.
Yes ,I’m proud that she pulled the race card .it’s sad that a black woman with a degree can still be a low life .
They knew she was who she said she was! Beautiful, articulate, intelligent, and professional! They knew! Great that she sued them!
Omg!! You probably were bouncing checks all over the place .Stop playing the race card .it’s sad that you were brought up with so much hate
Why not call her Employer or etc.?
So the update here is that the doctor and Chase reached a settlement. I'm happy to know that these guys 'won" their lawsuit, in effect. I will never give my banking business to Chase now.
Thank you for the update!
I pretty much feelme way about chase too they won't give me a credit Card their excuse is you don't have a long history with us because I open up in March.
Thanks for the update!!
What happened to those employees?
These people should be retrained or even put on leave.
This could all have simply be avoided if the employee had gone into another office and called to validate the check. The deserve what they get!
Sounds like terrible training or should I say, lack of training?

We need to once and for all pull money from these institutions. Money is the only thing they respect. You can't force someone to stop being a racist.
I agree! Navy Federal is good. WSFS is good.
I believe EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY WORD SHE SAID about Chase! I have closed my checking accounts and quit working there months ago because of the things we were trained to do dealing with other customers. I believe her!
What were you trained to do? 👀
@@veelastname lol I want to know too
These videos and comments are a trove of information. Like if you call satellite radio to cancel, they are trained and MUST transfer you a minimum of 3 times in attempt to stop you cancelling. I know it pales next to the discrimination in this video, but its along the lines of what employees are trained to do
We're listening!
Racist chasist smh
This is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS!!!
Wish we could get an update. Chase is a terrible bank. They charged me $7500 on a refinance on my mortgage. Just the worst expirience.
All they had to do was call the business who gave her the check. The legitimacy of the business and their verification would have been enough.
Some banks would have put a hold on the check so due diligence can be done to verify the check.
That's what the bank should have done. Put a hold on the account and verify that she works there and is the money in there account too.
Agreed, but unfortunately, the bias is so deep, that they think multiple players are in cahoots, meaning, even if they had called the issuer, they're thinking they're in on a scheme as well. In their heads no matter who they called, somewhere, somehow, someone is in on a fake check.
So brainwashed and backwards. Her success threatened their reality.
@@florastewart7920 exactly. Couldn’t deal with it so they tried to belittle her
This is awful, I’m a long time Chase customer. They should be ashamed of themselves. Definitely looking for a new bank.
Yeah, right.
Yeah Chase is shit.
This isn't a policy of Chase. That was those individualis. I used to work for Chase. I think it was more about her looking young who happened to be Black and that weave is torn. Oh yes, Black had something to do with it because my Aunt lives in Houston and they have quite a few Black Doctors in that area and successful Black People there. Whens l go to Houston, I stay with her sometimes and that area is filled with successful Black People. They were just messing with her and if the check was a good, what difference does it make she wasn't trying to cash it. She was trying to deposit it and even if she were ghetto, these young people have money. They all are on the internet making money and small businesses. My niece is a hair stylist and she is only 22 years old and she did a wedding and got paid $8,000 for doing the hair. So these tellers were probably just jealous because black people were not supposed to be making that type of money BUT there's no need to withdraw your money out of Chase because this is not a policy of theirs. I have worked there and they have black people in upper management everywhere in the state.
@Mia Yancey Definitely do that. Or better yet, I'd go with a credit union if I were you. I left Wells Fargo a few years ago and haven't regretted it since. My mother followed suit.
I will be canceling my chase account today
Makes me think of Director Ryan Coogler ending up in handcuffs trying to make a withdrawal from his own bank account
“How DARE you try to PUT money in our bank!!!”
If ever faced with this situation...I can only hope I would be as calm, poised and professional and this Doctor. You just never know how you will react in the moment. I commend her!
This is really really sad how we are constantly being discriminated because they do NOT want us to be great!
And that's why they keep writing CHECKS
The word for today is love…. Keep on loving girl
Or maybe it's the massive amount? That lots of people try to pass off bad checks with large amounts? Just stop with trying to make everything about race. It's getting real old. No one is trying to stop you from being "great." Stop making excuses. You know who I see who do actually become great? The ones who don't make excuses.
I do everything online, I avoid customer service scum as much as I can.
@@aewtx You sound "privileged" ! All they had to do is VERIFY but they CHOSE NOT TO SO IT SOUNDS LIKE RACISM TO ME!
Discrimination of the highest order 😡😡😡
Unfortunately my mother, a physician too, also faced this type of discrimination from banks numerous times but she never needed a lawyer because she had me! Homey don’t play that!
Imagine a bank teller/s looking down at a Dr. 🤷♂️
I used to be a teller and banker for two large banks. It is NOTHING to call the bank that is on the check and verify everything they need to prove legitimacy. This was definitely racially motivated.
Exactly, or hold the funds until the check clears.
I agree ! cheque verification is a very easy process.
I guess the banker is too stupid to figure out that a doctor can easily afford a high paid lawyer, and high paid lawyers can squeeze every penny out of the guilty suspect.
Chase needs to look at retraining all there staff and kick out the embarrassing staff who think its the 1890s !!
No there's no apology she was a victim of racial discrimination they profiled her as a black woman as a criminal their profiled it ain't no excuse you suing them you got the constitutional right to sue these racist people
So true!
I canceled all my credits cards with chase and any affiliations. Chase doesn’t even give you your money back if you have been scammed. This is the worst company ever and I’m glad she’s suing them.
Thank you Sydney!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Scammed or ID Theft???
Lol! you got scammed sweetie, that ain't no one's fault but yours.

In Australia we have very strong consumer Law that protect the card holder and they are not liable to absorb the loss due fraud. My friend in Malaysia had fraud perpetrated on his card and the laws are so weak he had to wear the loss, but that happens in third world countries.
Funny how those dolts didn't call the police if they thought the check was fake.
I never understand why these banks don't call the bank attached to the checking account... who will, in turn, contact the check's original owner? Why go straight to accusations?
So the bank never called the employer? That’s infuriating! I hope this woman wins everything in court! I work in healthcare. My boss goes so hard about her employees since we work with the public. She won’t let anyone bother us. If this happened to me she’d be like, where’s the bank? Give me 15 minutes. 😂 My boss don’t play about her people!
That's because she's a scammer, the bank made the right choice, if she didn't like it take your ass somewhere else.

I pulled all my money out of that place
Oh wow, what a mess.
I was just discriminated against and called a fraud yesterday by a Hendricks Mercedes Benz sales manager in charlotte, nc. The sales manager also called the police and banned me from the property. And all i was doing was completing the payment transaction paperwork for an contract that was signed by another manager prior agreeing to sell me a car.
This has really gotten out of control. But at the same time, it has been going on forever. Nothing has changed.
Don't despair. 30 years ago, I went to the local Merc dealership in Hove (U.K.) and was treated with utter contempt. I brushed the dust off my feet and left the place. 8 years later, I went back to the dealership and there seemed to have been a change of ownership. I was treated with respect and bought my first gorgeous convertible Merc.Since then, I have always been treated like royalty. Great management and staff. Naturally, I've bought all my cars from them ever since.
I am so sorry for the things you are experiencing.
They " agreed " to sell you a car. ?

Oh yes! I, too wanted to purchase a suv and was called by the salesman to come and test drive , I was quoted a price. They didn’t think she would go public
Thats why they didn't do anything, not even an apology until it went viral. Literal scum.
Not only does the check have a routing and account number; it also has different things like heat sensors to prove they aren’t fraudulent. This makes no sense.
Disgraceful....
Here we are - 2022, and the same old crap is occurring. I hope that Dr. Mitchell-Stewart is successful in her lawsuit (and also her career).
They've never had a $16000 check of their own in their lifetime, so there's no way possible she has one.
Right lol
you got it ...they were wrong and that bank will probably end up being sued
Yup. People get jealous.
Of all the banks that I have done business Chase has been the most inflexible in all sense of the word.
We are cancelling our account with Chase bank today !!!!
This happens way too often. This has happened to me at Wells Fargo and Bank of America. I look back on it and wish that I had filed a lawsuit. I honestly don't believe that these things are corporate policy. It's the racism of the employees, and the actions of the employees are the responsibility of the corporation. Racism is real and should always be addressed immediately.
The employers should be sensitizing their employees about these things, I'm reading about too many of these incidents.
WF and BoA too?? Damn!
That's why we shouldn't use Banks anymore and use credit unions especially local ones and I guess the only way to use a bank that's something that's Internationals use something like chime or something cuz these banks are just terrible in every f****** way
I wish it wouldn’t happen in future but you will probably get the opportunity to in future
Me too
Most banks have a "merchant check verification" option a person can select when they call the payor/employer's bank. The bank's employee or the lead teller should have done that.
The problem is they don't call anyone they just deny.
I was thinking the same thing. Why didn't they use the clearing house to verify the check.
Banks can place the check on hold to do there due diligence.
Employees in the branch can very seldom contact other banks to verify or request the release of checks and funds. That has to be done by another department (I’ve been working for chase for 2.5 years as a banker)
@Adrian Maybe someone else was referring to calling another bank. One of the banks that I bank at told me that they utilize a banking clearing house system to verify the validity of the checks that they receive. However, I think the check in this scenario was a Chase Bank check, (I can't remember). I still don't understand why they couldn't place a hold on the check or even open her a banking account. Why couldn't they open her a bank account?
