  • Exploring Abandoned Castle; Norris Castle located in East Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Exploration inside, this Neo-Gothic Castle sits within 225 acres of grounds.
It was designed in 1799 by the famous architect James Wyatt for Lord Henry Seymour.
The estate adjoins the neighbouring Osborne House which was the country home to Queen Victoria.
The castle had been left neglected for many years and in late 2016 the castle was purchased for 4.7million pounds by the owner of Island Harbour with the plan to turn the site into a luxury hotel and spa.
In October 2016, the parks and gardens were upgraded by Historic England to Grade I, making them the Isle of Wight's only Grade I listed landscape.
No damage was caused to the property during this visit and the site was left as it was found.
I would strongly advise against anyone attempting entry to the property as the way in has since been sealed and the site has 24hour security.

People need to have respect for property even when it's abandoned. Has it stops others from filming at these places. Asbestos is very serious to health yet people still don't wear the right equipment and clothing.

This is not a medieval castle. It was built in 1799 for one thing. For another it lacks anything that looks like feasible battlements, while there are big windows on the ground floor. This is a manor house made to look (a little) like a medieval castle.

What a beautiful film. I have heard of the place, although I never realised that it was empty. The condition of the interior is extraordinary. I hope that it is planned to remove the asbestos and restore life to this wonderful Victorian 'Gothic' building. It would be heartbresking if it were to be vandalized.

It's been empty for some time the old guy living there died a few years back now.

Abandoned Isle of Wight thank you, yes it is mainly in excellent condition. 'The Old Dude' Major Coventry spent a great deal of money and effort keeping it up - a small fortune was spent on the tower and north facade - and it really makes me angry when people talk as though it was neglected and allowed to fall down. Personally doubt the new people will do much in the short term

It also mentions that the old Kaiser Wilhelm stayed there and had a bath built for him which is still there. Queen Victoria didn’t like it.

Messrs Eamon O'Connor and Edward Wellington (2016 - ) Edit
In February 2016, Norris Castle was bought for £4.7 million, with the intention that it be renovated and opened as a luxury hotel. The owning company is Uavend (Norris Castle) LTD, operated by Eamon O'Connor and his business partner, Edward Wellington. The selling agent set a guide price of £1 million, with the proviso that the estate would need millions spent to restore it.[90]
At the current time, the project is in its planning and consultation stages.

    • @yeomanpip

Grumpy OldMan is right, it IS expensive.
Story is that the current owners bought it for, let’s say a LOT of money with the intention of making it into a hotel, they worked with Historic England and HE had it regraded as a Grade 1 property, the highest and most stringent grade there is.
The owners still have that dream but it will cost another LOT of money to do.

Seeing ancient abandon properties is depressingly beautiful, it always reminds me of how short life really is, these castles have been through it all, I'd love to buy and restore one someday (thats not gonna happen)

Nice castle and good explore. the fire place and the feel of this place is amazing. Be a shame if it gets knocked down for cheep rubbish housing development. So much history in this building.

What a beautiful old place. The piano, sheet music, book cases still containing a few volumes, all made me think of a video game: use the sheet music to pick out the proper tune on the piano, which in turn reveals the next clue.

I just watched this video today (1st October 2019).
Do you know the backstory of this abandoned castle?
When was the castle abandoned and why ?
And what has happened to the family or heirs to this property ?
It's such a shame that such a lovely property was left unoccupied for so long.

Why is there asbestos in a 19th century neo-gothic castle?

    • @anvilbrunner.2013
      @anvilbrunner.2013 5 років тому +1

Amosite production began in 1858. Asbestos is that old. Henry Seymour never stopped renovating the place.

Amazing video! Me and the people I work for actually cleared out a load of furniture before it was sold that all went to Henry Adams auctions in Chichester. It was an amazing place and the furniture that came out was amazing and had so much history to it. I never saw the swimming pool though as we wasn't aloud down to the basement due to the asbestos.

It was already pretty cool in there with most of the furniture gone, bet it must have looked amazing with all the old furniture still in there... Couldn't believe the size of it inside, would love to go back and film some more... Thanks for watching! 😁

Abandoned Isle of Wight yeah some of the furniture we took our dated back to the 1800s.. also there was a rolls Royce sitting in the barn but that went after our 4th visit. One of the security guards that was staying there at the time we went told us that late and night he could hear foot steps and doors closing... 😳

This, not really a castle, would be easy for you to visit. There are many mansions like this all over the world. Most are open to the public and are like museums. My favorite is Casa Loma in Toronto. Just do a quick Google search for castles/mansions open to the public near you.
