- Elton’s classic band (Davey Johnstone - guitars, Nigel Olsson - drums, Dee Murray - bass) never got a chance to perform songs from their 1975 #1 album, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, until they reunited for his 1982 tour. This performance of the album’s only single is taken from the final show of Elton’s record-breaking run at London’s Hammersmith Odeon of 16 sold-out concerts in 16 nights, ending on Christmas Eve.

His guitarist - Davey Johnstone, bassist - Dee Murray and drummer-Nigel Olson were the full-time members of the band and together they formed the "Classic Lineup".
I can't find it, but I read somewhere that after they got the main track down and Elton had recorded his vocals, Elton would leave the studio. He trusted them to write and record the backing vocal parts. They took great joy in it and even had a pretend name for the three of them as a backing vocal group. Elton would come in the next day and listen and say: Wonderful!!!
Best backing band he ever had. These guys complemented each other so well.

Fifty years later Linda Woodrow was a manager of a doctor's office in
Dallas going by the name of Linda Hannon. Her hours had been cut due to
the COVID-19 epidemic and she needed a knee replacement, but couldn't
afford to take five weeks off work to recuperate. When Elton heard about
Linda's plight, he immediately offered to help his former fiancée in
her hour of need.
The best version Elton played was in 1980 in Central Park! Just beautiful and a bit slower. ❤

What a band!! These 4 were the band of the early to mid 70’s. A BAND, not a singer and his session musicians. They were a band in every sense of the word. This footage is wonderful. Thanks for posting it. RIP✝️✝️✝️Dee Murray.

Seems like yesterday. Captain Fantastic tops number one on it's first week on the charts. It's a great album, one of the best (along with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road) i've ever heard!

This was a favorite of my late sister who died from cancer. I like the slower album version, but he did not play it when he came to Columbus. I like the drum line and the backing vocals, just like the recording.

This song deals with a time in Elton's life when he was going to get
married to a woman named Linda Woodrow, which would have been a big
mistake. In the 1991 tribute project, Elton explained:
"I was going to get married once when I was younger, and I went out and
got drunk with Long John Baldry and Bernie and John said I shouldn't get
married. I knew he was right but I didn't know how to get out of it so,
I just got drunk and went home and said I'm not getting married."

Elton wrote the music in 1975 while he was on a cruise. He was aboard a
ship called the SS France for it's last voyage, and used the onboard
piano to write the songs he used for the album. He had to write in short
spurts because there was an opera singer who had booked most of the
time on the piano.
