Blizz Employee: Hey Ben, check out Reynad's new video I think he make a few interesting points on our design choices... Ben Brode: 4Head 4Head 4Head 4Head
+MadMadMonkey Yeah, it's called his self-control. If you haven't noticed, it's an unreliable piece of crap that jams all the time, especially on Sundays.
oohlala444 yeah I know right. He is complaining about the true purpose of RNG. It’s 100% meant to make noobs have a chance of winning against a pro. If it was just based on skill there would be zero new players. Look at Star craft. How many players have years of experience on you.
I gave my opponent a card from spellslinger this week and it turned out it was a curse of rafaam that he played to bypass my cabalist's tome generated iceblock in a game that I would otherwise have won hands down. I wasn't even mad, it was amazing.
+HammerspaceCreature That is a weird reaction. I would have removed spell slinger from my decks. It is a terrible card design. There is no reason to play a card that has a chance to help you lose. A 3/3 that only gives you a spell would be so much better.
+Remy Lebeau You might be playing it wrong or looking at it from a bad perspective, card design isn't terrible but it's not something you'd put in every mage deck. Also don't be a pessimist! Sure theres a chance it can help you lose, but it can also help you win :) Even if you get a card like shield slam, you get spell synergy.
+Dylan Bohuchot Nonsense. The new expansion has a 3/4 for 3 mana that has an ability that only helps you (cthun), there is no reason to use the spell slinger.
+Remy Lebeau lets just assume every average joe is running a c'thun deck & doesn't like to have any fun at all. Your advice is limited by your lack of indifference. Next time make sure to end your comment with, "and that is my opinion."
+Mom's Spaghetti 420YOLO "That word, I don't think it means what you think it means." It is redundant to put IMO after everything I say. Obviously what I say is my opinion. I'm not going to run a card that has a stupid outcome too many times. If you enjoy RNG that much, then help yourself to it and play the game that gives you the most fun. I just thought up a way to make the card playable. You make it a discover mechanic so you get to choose what card they get! Totally worth it. >:)
I really liked this video Reynad, your point was very accurate and cohesive. I agree that early on RNG minions like knife juggler can outright win or lose a game. RNG should be more late game oriented so players can actually prepare for them, hence, more skill is involved. opposed to early on RNG where if you don't have a perfect answer, there's absolutely nothing you can do. My question is, is the new bat hunter card really "bad RNG"? It doesn't kill most 2 drop minions so the outcome of the game won't really change. You can also trade in your own 1 drop if you go first so it'll only do 1 damage to the face.
It's nice to see Reynad settling into life after being a pro Hearthstone player. After being so ruthlessly beaten last weekend i thought we would never see him again.
People like to have opinions on everything reynad does. I think he makes most stuff amazing, like this video. Good points. Great logic. Nice presentation and timing.
+Jeremy "Gaming Curios" Jereeeemyyyyy, the most liked comment at the gnar video was to buyy eeeeveeeryooneee skiiiiins xD . Just kidding, I love your videos man
Finally someone who spoke out. I've been playing HS since the beta and its one of my favorite games but this expansion makes me sick. Its pure fucking RNG in every fucking game
Great video Reynad. Your videos lately have been fantastic, Spy Fox is hilarious and your self-deprecating highlights are great too, but this is the rare "Inspector" Reynad giving detailed, informed analysis of Hearthstone. Thanks man!
Yeah I agree. RNG should not define the outcome of a game. I remember seeing a finales match of Hearthstone and the Warlock Bane of Doomed on turn 5 into a Mal'Ganis. Automatically won the game.
Great job Reyand! I wish you make more videos like this and the previous one! Just salty highlights get boring really soon, the last two videos are great refreshment to the channel, keep up!
"Luck is the residue of design" - some greater Magic player than myself. While resources in Magic may have the "randomness" factor whereas Hearthstone is more consistent in this aspect, they are still primarily reliant on the construction of one's deck, thus, being residue of design. In Hearthstone, the main resource is far more consistent, however as a general rule things as basic as the draw step are more random as a result of lack of draw manipulation in Hearthstone. Even the closest examples of draw manipulation (Discover among others) are still variance reliant. And the effects of numerous powerful, metagame impacting cards are heavily variance reliant. Is that good? Is that bad? Which is more punishing? I suppose those questions can be answered many different ways based on opinion/interpretation.
My biggest gripe with the firebat card is that if it was just a 1/1 or 1/2 it would have been notably better (well, worse but better for the game imo) - play a 2/3 and the firebat can't 1 for 1 it. Sure, you're being bullied out of playing 3/2s by a 1 drop but at least the meta can shift and a player can do something if they get frustrated by it or it starts dominating the meta. Making it 2/1 so it can trade into 2/3's or kill a 3/2 AND a 1/1 if you're lucky is just unnecessary.
+DarkSonicTrail infest is awful, unplayable past rank 15. 4/2 needs a super specific hand and deck to get the mediocre effect off.And rofl a legendary effect=1 random damage, awful.have you ever been legend?
+Mario Morales i thought The 4/2 was deathrattle on board, MB and as for infest, hadnt really tried it myself, i just think that unleash/infest is a gr8 combo and no, closest i have ever been to legend is rank 2 also, you must realize that some people on legend are just netdeckers that just know how to play their deck and know jack-shit about balance
He's got a point about those early trades mattering, I was really tired the other night in Arena, and didn't kill a 1/1 and instead hit face for 1, and that 1 tiny minion difference snowballed the situation so out of control that I was left just trying to control the board, instead of having had a board had I killed it..
The first thing randomness does is make the game faster - it would take longer if you had to think and choose the targets of those spells. Given other things, for example secrets, I suspect it was a big design goal for them. Second it widens the skill gap across which you can win/lose, not a big deal over the course on many, many games like a ladder, but crucial in tournaments.
I never thought about the randomness in certain effects being a way to compensate for the steady flow of mana you get in Hearthstone as opposed to other Card Games like Magic where you get fucked if you only draw lands or dont draw any at all. Good point.
+Yagi and proceed to not draw enough resources and lose in a few turns? lol You make it seem like that game is less cancerous to play, but in reality it is more. The combos etc in Magic are way more ridiculous than HS, I've played both and don't play either games anymore. Not being bias... Not to mention it always felt more P2W than HS since you can just buy card by card and build the perfect decks that top players are using, which are WAY more expensive than what most spend on HS to play with same decks that top players are using..
+Patrick De Freitas Magic is and isn't pay2win. What I mean by this is that while there is a (high) spending floor, beyond a certain point, the cost of a deck doesn't correlate with its winrate. You can spend 400 bucks to create a Modern deck that beats other 1000-2000 bucks decks, but you can't spend 100 bucks and expect to beat ANYONE, in other words. Btw, Magic also has bad RNG in it (cancer like Hymn to Tourach, Bloodbraid Elf, Bonfire of The Damned). They just toned it down in recent sets.
***** yes there is, just like everyother card game lol. if you think magic doesnt have this bad rng then you are clearly mistaken. the dude above me even admitted it...
***** yes... and you somehow expect a cardgame to not have any bad rng when every single "competitive" card game DOES have bad rng... Wake up and look at reality mate.
+Hillebrand1 There's even a famous quote from an MTG pro that goes something like "A person who plays absolutely perfectly should expect an around 75% winrate."
Damn, it's [CURRENT YEAR], how is this still possible!? We should have learned from [LAST YEAR]! Hopefully this kind of stuff won't be happening in [NEXT YEAR]! I agree though.
Definitely agree. Undercity huckler is my favorite card. and i know my opponent a game ago hated it as it gave me a healing wave and theyre aggro shaman. I really doubt the aggro shaman liked me being healed for 14 (especially as rogue that lacks healing now) but i mean that could have been anything. since my next one that game got me totemic might.
Fiery Bat isn't bad design, since the effect is a deathrattle effect. Meaning that it doesn't happen immidiately, giving the opponent time to deal with it and use skill to lessen the odds of a bad "juggle"
Pretty well said buddy ! Completely agreed with you ! Keep up the good work/stream/quality videos!!! Thanks for all the tips you're giving us :D Have a nice day !
I think these early-game 'do 1 point of damage' cards would benefit from being swapped with something like poison counters (as in MTG) instead of damage. For example, 3 poison counters on a card kills it.
Good to see Reynad forming some intelligent, constructive analysis for once, instead of just childish ranting on Twitch (which is entertaining, don't get me wrong.
My only disagreement with Reynad here is on Fiery Bat. The fact that it's a 1-health 1-drop means the RNG is not really a factor when played on curve. Since it's played turn one, either there is no board before its played, or the board is just another 1-drop that trades evenly (as there are very few 3-health 1-drops where the ping determines board state). Usually it just trades one-for-one with another 1-drop, followed by the opponent dropping their 2-drop, or gets pinged.
Well said. I'm 50/50 with you on this one. From one part i fully agree that this kind of RNG is not healthy. My other parts just loves a dice roll so i can't help to like cards like this (from a gamblers perspective). But yeah, not healtyh.
I remember a rant from your stream around GVG release where you praised the Shredder RNG compared to things like Juggler and Animal Companion. What changed your mind about it?
Great arguments, but I got couple questions. What about a Webspinner? Its randomness doesn't affect board right away, but I presume you have a negative opinion on it. And what do you think about Lightning Storm?

+Alex Semenov It does not matter if you draw a random card earlie on. That card still has to be payed with mana. A minion that can trade another minion away in the very earlie stages of a game, effects the board immidiatly and wheter or not it hits the game will pan out in a tempo loss for one or the other side. Thats the point: Most games get decided by a coinflip when minions such as these are involved, because you cannot recover from a loss like this so earlie on.
what about webspinnet reynad? I remember the world series video where someone got king krush from their webspinner, this is a similar RNG to spellslinger. How do you feel about this?
I think randomness is what defines Hearthstone, because that's not something you can do in physical TCGs; so Cards like Evolve are what TRULY makes Hearthstone stand out when compared to other Card Games, because it's something that only Hearthstone can do.

Latest two videos have been great, Reynads.
Congrats on 100k subs Reynoodle!

holy crap this is some great insight, I agree whole-wholeheartedly with your opinions. Great vid, reynoodle
outstanding point of view, makes complete sense. blizzard should hire you for card design and you should stream from their home office
reynad is the living embodiment of 'civil rage'

Preach it Reynad

Excellent video on RNG- not only agrees as a Hearthstone player but also as a game designer :)
Felt good watching this =P
Great video, just subbed, hope more like this coming.
Totally agree ...

I hope you know there's a creepy lady behind you.
In short: RNG is Hearthstone is good because of highlight reels.
Don't play the game yourself, let streamers get salty in videos, play Magic instead.

Fiery Bat isn't bad design, since the effect is a deathrattle effect. Meaning that it doesn't happen immidiately, giving the opponent time to deal with it and use skill to lessen the odds of a bad "juggle"
Great video explaining WHY some cards have bad design.
nice video man!
Good explanation. Thx
Great Video!
This video is 100% legit when made by Reynad.
Pretty well said buddy ! Completely agreed with you ! Keep up the good work/stream/quality videos!!! Thanks for all the tips you're giving us :D Have a nice day !
Bad early RNG: Chance to restrict what your opponent does, early game. The restriction carries all the way to the mid-late game.
I'm a simple man. I see haHAA intro - I click up!
great video!
Did not expect to see flame juggler on this list, got to admit
I think these early-game 'do 1 point of damage' cards would benefit from being swapped with something like poison counters (as in MTG) instead of damage. For example, 3 poison counters on a card kills it.
Surprised that Dr.Boom didn't get a mention.

If you do not have a meta deck, it is hard to progress because RNG is so unbelievably hard to overcome most times
100k subs! :DD

Reynad annoys the hell out of me but he is spot on with this video.
thank you for this video. all of my thoughts summed up eloquently.

gates i got what he said. Dont think you understand my reply :')
It took me a very long time before I realised Reynad was actually being serious.
+Bryce Kusnierz I tend to agree with that he says.A game should not be decided turn 2 with a juggle,it's just straight up bad design.
I love Reynad so much :') Says what he thinks and shamelessly plugs :D
Rly well put, I hope somebody at blizzard watches this
so hard to focus on Reynad when there is this old woman staring at me in his back.... LOL
She's hot though?
We cant be making cards like Flame Juggler IN THE CURRENT YEAR!
Reynoodle has spoken!

WIZARDS of the Old Gods: Next Hearthstone Expansion
I remember a rant from your stream around GVG release where you praised the Shredder RNG compared to things like Juggler and Animal Companion. What changed your mind about it?
i watch this for you reybae
Great arguments, but I got couple questions.
What about a Webspinner? Its randomness doesn't affect board right away, but I presume you have a negative opinion on it.
And what do you think about Lightning Storm?
Webspinner doesn't affect the board state in a game deciding way. getting King Krush still requires you to commit 9 mana to playing King Krush, and hence doesn't ensure your victory because you got it.
Lightning storm costs 5 mana, and is slightly better than consecration by a random amount. it's pretty fair, but a great talking point.
+Alex Semenov It does not matter if you draw a random card earlie on. That card still has to be payed with mana. A minion that can trade another minion away in the very earlie stages of a game, effects the board immidiatly and wheter or not it hits the game will pan out in a tempo loss for one or the other side. Thats the point: Most games get decided by a coinflip when minions such as these are involved, because you cannot recover from a loss like this so earlie on.
great video
Hey reynad what do you feel about 50% chanse to hit the wrong enemy?
Hey reynoodle had some good points there.
behind u WutFace
Does anyone know where did Reynar grow up? Really like his accent
hey reynad, what do you think about the bombers. do they fall into the harmful section of bad rng or are they fine?
what about webspinnet reynad? I remember the world series video where someone got king krush from their webspinner, this is a similar RNG to spellslinger. How do you feel about this?
This comming from one of the saltiest streamers is freakin awesome and also makes a lot of sense, you go Reynad ;)
I think randomness is what defines Hearthstone, because that's not something you can do in physical TCGs; so Cards like Evolve are what TRULY makes Hearthstone stand out when compared to other Card Games, because it's something that only Hearthstone can do.
