The DX2E is not an all-laminated guitar although the cheaper DX1E is. The DX2E has HPL (high-pressure laminate) back and sides in three finishes but it has a solid spruce top. You are not comparing an all-laminate guitar against an all solid-wood guitar; you are comparing two guitars with solid spruce tops with one guitar having solid rosewood back and sides and the other having HPL back and sides made to appear like rosewood.
@@thecanadianflatpicker Not that model but an older one with solid spruce top and HPL (mahogany) back and sides. Just go to the Martin site and look up the two models and the specs are listed. Also Martin does not use layered materials ... Seagull and Taylor (I think) use that technique but not Martin. So I'm thinking the price tag may be wrong. I would contact Martin support if you have a question.
Ren Ferguson designed that Gibson songwriter guitar. I have a Guild custom shop designed and built by Ren. Killer guitars Everything he did for Gibson and Guild was a huge bonus for the companies.
@@thecanadianflatpicker Thanks for commenting. I wasn't sure myself. I was astounded how Martin could ask so much for a laminate top. This makes a lot of sense. Sounded way too good to be a laminate. Great video.
@@thecanadianflatpicker Would love to see it go up against a high end Yamaha. I love my LL16, which is midrange, so my guess is the high end Yamaha acoustics would give the Gibson a run for its money.
I've heard the satin finish is a lot less labour than the high-gloss, which requires way more coats and time. That's why the satin-finish D-18s are hundreds less than the HG ones.
Don't think so because they are just pictures of wood printed on to the same HPL. On the other hand, identical guitars made of the exact same materials will sound a bit different.

The store tag says layered spruce top. Maybe it's a mistake? Have you played one?

Wow, I didn't know that. That's awesome. I'd love to see or hear your custom.
solid top on both
Yes, the shop had this one incorrectly labeled I think. An awesome guitar. Thanks for watching.

I have an old Washburn that appears to be laminated but sounds great
So do I!
The Gibson sounds better hands down to me. But the Martin is worth a paycheque if you don’t have either. Great playing and like the haircut
The Gibson is undefeated

@Simonchez brother, we had a gorgeous ll16 in the shop butnit sold. That's a great idea maybe ill do that if we get another one.
For Yamaha's I'm curious about the CGX122MC. This is the nylon with preamp in it. Would love to try that

Really wow.
It's not Brazilian Rosewood laminated wood. It has HPL back and sides with a print of Rosewood. And it has a solid spruce top! see top specs below.

Cool. This is interesting. I'd love to compare this one with one that has HPL mahogany to see if there is a significant sound difference. 🤔

Very nice, lookin good!
Hehe
The martin hands down
martin has a blue grass tone .Midrange
It really does. It's just spectacular for a guitar with an HPL back and sides.
