  • Do you want to make your paintings more painterly? : Then break the rules with 'Wrong' Colors and learn to paint loosely. Learn a new painting technique.
Getting hung up on recreating a photo reference EXACTLY will hold you back. Instead, use the photo just as material. Try your level best to uncouple yourself from it and impose your story upon your painting. Paint loosely. Ask yourself what your trying to convey here. Is it a story about glorious Mediterranean heat and clear skies? Or a rain-swept Irish glen...or a showy bouquet of flowers...? Loosen up; tell a story and use your colour palette like descriptive words.
If it were a poem, what would you write? So instead of: "I walked about a bit on my own", it would become, "I wandered lonely as a cloud", as the Heineken beer ad used to have it!

Thanks, Kevin. I really loved your work in this lesson. Its got me thinking about using this approach to go over older paintings I have on hand and try to give them a new life. Perhaps you could do something along these lines. Regards, Peter

Hello sir, I can't believe that this video only has 5 likes. You seem like a great teacher and I really appreciate that you share your knowledge and it seems to me that without knowing you, you are a good person, I would like a video where you explain or talk about your color palette , I find it very natural and beautiful colors, greetings from a Mexican who lives in Oklahoma

Good to meet you Oscar - thank you for your kind comments. I just completed a wall mural in Dublin in collaboration with Kathrina Rupit from Mexico ( she calls herself Kinmx). It was such fun and she's a brilliant painter.
I will indeed be adding a video about my palette, the colors I use and why, very soon. Thanks for the suggestion. Kevin

Oh this is amazing. I guess it goes back to the idea that as long as you have the values right the color doesn’t matter. I look forward to your color wheel video. All your videos have been very helpful. I am in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania USA.

You got it Vivian. I should've put that point out in the video - but i never use a script, so I'm apt to miss points sometimes. I can't bear reading from a script, it never sounds natural! I hope the weather's good in Pittsburgh... Kevin

I'm glad to hear it Diane. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. Isn't it wonderful that I could be sitting here in a damp Dublin and be communicating with someone in sunny Florida? Meanwhile, any sharing of my videos you do would be very welcome. Kevin
