Dublin In Sketches And Stories - An Exhibition Of The Original Artwork

- Over the course of two years I sat on the streets of Dublin and drew what I saw. Then I painted. Everything on site, from start to finish. By the end of the project I had about 138 urban sketches ready to sort into a story...I knew I wanted to tell the stories of Dubliners, dead and alive, but we weren't sure how best to present it. In the end it was clear - over the two years of drawing and painting, I had sat out on the streets across all four seasons. Ireland is at the mercy of the weather, and each season has such a strong character and flavour, so it was the natural way to show off our capital.
There are only a few books left in the first edition, and while you've seen the sketches (as close to seeing them in the flesh as it's possibe to do without actually taking them on tour!), you are in for a treat with the book, as it is also a memoir of life in Dublin over the two years. I hope I have whetted your appetite for the wonderful written content of the book.

I really enjoyed this video Roisin. Very inspiring! It was nice to hear all your commentary with it as well which added so much insight. The detail you included is amazing. I had to stop on the sketch of the Gallery Cafe and ponder "where would I even start in this sketch?!" But you capture things so very well. Thank you for sharing! And Reuben is just the cutest little fuzz ball! His little face is adorable. You must really enjoy sketching him.

I received this book last week, and it is absolutely gorgeous ! It is generously illustrated and I appreciate the size of the illustrations. I never visited Dublin but it is a joy to discover this city through your sketches. Through your story. I am enjoying reading it as much as to discover what will be the sketch on the next page. ;¬)

Thank you Melanie. I submitted the sketchbooks to this year’s Rendezvous du Carnet de Voyage in France this coming November, but they turned me down. No accounting for taste! Pity because I thought folk would love to see them.

...we as a family moved there when I was bout 13yrs and loved growing up there aftr living in the suburb of the city...in Ranelagh ( South Side of city)
Wicklow has so many beautiful sights including Enniskerry and up the hill to Powerscourt 🙂

It’s a grand book and I do hope they do a 2nd edition so many more people can enjoying it. The Dublin Tourist Board should sponsor it. Because doesn’t it just make you want to visit the place? Certainly does me.

Thanks for showing us your sketchbooks, Roisin. I greatly enjoyed them. I find it interesting the number of buildings where it is just the tops of the buildings. I must admit that when out and about I do tend to look at the tops of buildings as so many have such interesting embellishment. A sort of architectural icing on the cake.
'I have too many books at home.' is never anything I've have ever said. In the past my partner has mentioned that I may have too many books but having pointed out to her that there is no such things as too many books she decided to make a tactical retreat. Besides she is now the owner of a fair number of books herself, many of which I bought for her.
I wrote it because I thought it was so funny that they were browsing in a bookshop whilst also saying they had too many books!
I sometimes only draw the tops of buildings because I get the scale wrong…stupid reason I know!

Mark, that's exactly what I hoped: that even those who had the book would see the originals and find something else therein...even though I was very familiar with Norman Rockwell in print, nothing prepared me for the power of his originals. I am hoping to be selected for a travel sketchbook exhibition this year in France, so if all goes well I will show the work to many more people, in the flesh.
